Trump says Iran 'objectives are nearing completion' in first prime-time speech in defence of war

Speaking in his first national address since the war began on 28 February, Trump sought to reassure war-weary Americans that the offensive was worth the effort.

00:00U.S. President Donald Trump offered few new details on the war in Iran in his first national
00:07address since the conflict he began in late February. He instead insisted the U.S. is
00:14close to achieving its objectives in the war and said Iran would continue to face a barrage
00:19of attacks. The President sought to reassure Americans the war was worth the effort with
00:47the speech coming as he faces plunging approval ratings and growing economic uncertainty at home
00:54and abroad. Trump also did not offer an update on negotiations with Iran or his April the 6th
01:01deadline for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Separately, on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister
01:08Abbas Arachi told media that just because the two sides are in contact, it does not mean they are
01:14negotiating. Oil rose more than 4 percent and Asian stocks fell after Trump's comments about the U.S.
01:22continuing to hit Iran hard. Soon after Trump's speech, Tehran announced another barrage of missile
01:29and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf, striking Israeli cities including
01:35Tel Aviv and Aliyat, as well as U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.
