00:05On March 13, 2013, at around 7 p.m., the eyes of the world are on a balcony overlooking
00:11St. Peter's Square.
00:12Avemus Papa.
00:13Avemus Papa.
00:15We have a pope, a Jesuit, from Argentina.
00:19But as soon as the eyes of the world were looking upon this balcony in Rome, our attention was
00:25diverted here, to Assisi.
00:28The pope would take the name Francis, but why Francis?
00:33Why did the Holy Father invite the entire world to come and to look at this small village
00:39which overlooks the Umbrian Valley?
00:42Pope Francis would answer that question himself.
00:44He would say that St. Francis changed the way we lived.
00:47St. Francis challenged the civil authorities.
00:50He challenged the church authorities.
00:52The Holy Father went on to say, St. Francis changed history.
00:57But how did St. Francis change history?
01:00I mean, what did he do that would cause the Holy Father to say, he changed history?
01:06You know, I've had the opportunity dozens of times over the last 20 years to bring pilgrims
01:10here to Assisi.
01:11And I often hear the same or similar things.
01:14I hear pilgrims say things like, I had no idea who Francis was.
01:19They'll say to me things like, I knew that Francis loved animals, but he's so much more
01:24than that.
01:25Somebody said to me, Francis is more than a birdbath.
01:28Yes, yes, Francis of Assisi is more than just a birdbath.
01:33But who is he?
01:35If all you know about Francis of Assisi was that he loved animals or that he was poor,
01:41then you're missing the power.
01:43You're missing the beauty.
01:44You're missing even the simplicity of St. Francis of Assisi.
01:48But who was St. Francis?
01:51Francis of Assisi was a poet.
01:54He was a dreamer.
01:56He was a lover.
01:58He was on a journey searching and finding and losing.
02:02He was a real person.
02:04He wasn't this mythical figure of the past, but he was a man not unlike you and I.
02:09He was tormented.
02:10He was tormented with temptations, with doubts, with fears.
02:15He was broken and he was healed.
02:18He was poor and he was forever rich.
02:22He stood before the powers of the world.
02:24And he said things like, become small, become little, quiet, broken.
02:32And if you can do that, you'll find Jesus.
02:36And he encountered Jesus in everyone and in everything.
02:40He was, in a word, a disciple.
02:44Perhaps the greatest of disciples.
02:47turn as a king.
02:49He was just born here.
02:50Yeah, I love you.
03:01That's what he was born after.
03:03But I'm sure you would have no way or not.
03:03He was born and I'm sorry.
03:04He was born and he won't be so extinct.
03:04But I feel like I'm sorry.
03:04I know why.
03:05I love you, and I love you.
03:05I love you, and I love you.
03:05I love you, and I love you.
03:07I love you and my life.
