Smallholder/Family-Scale Grasshopper Farming in Cambodia
Family-scale grasshopper rearing (also known as smallholder or backyard grasshopper farming) is an emerging and increasingly popular agricultural activity in Cambodia. It serves as a supplementary source of household income, provides a nutritious protein-rich food, and is relatively easy to manage at home or in rural villages, often alongside rice farming or other activities.
Why It Is Popular
Grasshopper rearing at the household level offers many advantages:
Short production cycle: Grasshoppers can be harvested in about 40–45 days. Farmers can complete up to 8 cycles per year.
Low investment and easy management: It requires limited space, simple netted enclosures (pens), and locally available feed such as grasses, cassava leaves, banana leaves, corn leaves, or various green plants and crop residues. Grasshoppers eat almost continuously, day and night, and are highly resilient to hot or cold weather.
Good nutritional value: Grasshoppers are rich in protein and other nutrients, making them suitable for family consumption or sale as a snack (often fried).
Low labor requirement: Suitable for women and family members; it can be done near the house with minimal daily effort.
Strong market demand: Middlemen often come directly to the farm to buy. Grasshoppers are sold fresh and have good local and export potential (especially to China).
Many farmers have switched from traditional crops to grasshopper rearing because it is faster to generate income and less risky compared to some field crops.
