00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon. Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio. Here we are, July. Fantastic.
00:37And we can spend the evenings outside in the balmy, balmy dusk and then you hear that terrible
00:45as the mosquito approaches. Rachel, you know the sound? And you say, oh no.
00:51But the solution is dubstep music. Dubstep. You familiar with it? It's up and down.
00:58No, but apparently the mosquitoes, they shy away. They don't care for it. Right.
01:04And actually it staunches their bloodthirsty nature apparently and their bloodfeeding activity.
01:09So it's a toss up then. It's either be bitten or listen to the dubstep. I've got no idea
01:15what dubstep is. Are you familiar with it? I think the dubstep will keep me as well as
01:20the mosquitoes away actually. Is that right? It's not my favourite genre.
01:23Let's turn to our contestants and see whether they've heard of it. Tom Silverlock is back.
01:29Seven wins under your belt. Do you know about this dubstep business?
01:32I haven't got a clue, Nick. Sorry. You haven't heard it?
01:35No, I've never heard of it.
01:36All right. Let's ask your co-competitor here, Amy McClemmond from Glasgow. Are you familiar
01:44with dubstep? Similar to Rachel. I know of it, but not a dubstep fan.
01:48Who's listening to this dubstep then? Nobody here apparently. Amy, you're in Glasgow. You work
01:56as a disability communications manager for a big financial services outfit. How does it work?
02:02What's your job actually? That's right. So the team that I work in looks after the disability
02:08strategy for the company and I do the communications. So internal articles, awareness days, events,
02:14things like that. Good. And for employees as well as customers of that organisation.
02:19Yes. Yep. That's right. Good for you. Good for you. Have a lot of fun. Good luck to you
02:23both. Big round of applause for Tom and Amy. And over in Dictionary Corner, Susie Denton. Next
02:34to her, Springwatch presenter, Michaela Strachan. Welcome back, Michaela.
02:38Thank you. Okay. Tom, it's the big day today. Here we are. It's a Monday. It could be an
02:49octochamp at the end of it. I could be, yeah. Or not. Or not, yeah. There we are. Have
02:54a go. See what happens. Have a go. It's a letters game. Hi, Rachel. Hi, Tom. Can I have a
02:59consonant, please? Thank you. Start the week with T. And another one. C. And a vowel. A. And
03:10a consonant. D. And a vowel. E. And a consonant. G. And a vowel. O. And a consonant. L. And
03:26a
03:26foul. And the last one. You. And here's the countdown clock.
04:01Well, Tom? I've got a seven. A seven. Amy? Just a five. And your five is? Acted. Acted. Tom?
04:11Gloated. And gloated. Yes. Nice seven. And what of the corner? Michaela? I don't think we've
04:19got anything more than seven. Located. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Um, Kigal is there. And a gel coat.
04:26The smooth, uh, polyester resin surface that you'll find on fiberglass. Gel coat. Gel coat?
04:32Mm. Good for you. Sound like a DIYer there. Seven points for Tom. Amy, it's your letters
04:39game. Hi, Rachel. Hi, Amy. Start with a consonant, please. Thank you. Start with S. And another.
04:47M. And another. M. And a vowel, please. I. Another vowel. E. And a consonant, please. K. Consonant. N. And
05:07a
05:07vowel, please. A. And a consonant. And the last one. M. Standby.
05:16M. And a vowel, please.
05:20Okay.
05:25Okay.
05:45Let's do the same.
05:47Amy?
05:48Five.
05:49And Tom?
05:50Five.
05:52Amy?
05:52Sneak.
05:54Yes, Tom?
05:55Makes.
05:56Thank you very much.
05:56OK, and over in the corner, Susie, Michaela?
05:59Well, sticking to the wildlife theme, I got snake.
06:02Well done.
06:03But we did actually get one with seven, which was kinsman.
06:06Kinsman, yeah.
06:0712 plays, five.
06:09Tom in the lead at the moment.
06:11And now, Tom, it's your numbers game.
06:13Can I have one large and five small plays?
06:15You can indeed.
06:17Thank you, Tom.
06:17One from the top five.
06:18Little, start the week with nine, six, one, three, seven, and 50.
06:27And the target, 427.
06:30427.
07:01Yes, Tom?
07:02426, not written down.
07:04426.
07:06Amy?
07:07428.
07:07And 428.
07:10So, Tom?
07:11That's nine times 50.
07:13Nine, 50 is 450.
07:16And, which is 4 for 6 times 3 is 18.
07:20Yep.
07:23Minus 7.
07:25From the 18?
07:27Sorry, add them to, take the 18 off to 450.
07:30For 4, 3, 2, minus 7, 4, 4, 2, 5.
07:35And then add the 1.
07:37And that's 1 away, yep.
07:40Amy?
07:41So, 9 times 50.
07:44950 is 450.
07:467 times 3.
07:4721.
07:49Take that from the 450.
07:514, 2, 9.
07:52And minus the 1.
07:53And that's 1 the other way.
07:54Well done.
07:55What we've got here, Rachel, is a straddler.
07:58Yes.
07:58Can you get in the middle of it?
08:00I can hit the spot.
08:01If you say 7 plus 1 is 8, times 50 is 400.
08:08And then 3 times 9 gives you 27 to add on for 427.
08:12Ah, super.
08:13Thank you, Rachel.
08:18Perfect.
08:19Perfect.
08:20Now it's time for our first two-time teaser, which is macro ring.
08:24And the clue, this semi-precious stone sounds like it's come from the mountains.
08:28This semi-precious stone sounds like it's come from the mountains.
08:48Well, welcome back.
08:49I left you with a clue.
08:50This semi-precious stone sounds like it's come from the mountains.
08:54And they are true.
08:56It's Cairngorm.
08:58Susie, Cairngorm.
08:59Tell us a little bit about this.
09:01It's another term for, it sounds beautiful, smoky quartz, which is a semi-precious variety
09:07of quartz.
09:07And the colour is anything from light greyish brown to nearly black.
09:12Cairngorm.
09:12Named after the mountains.
09:14Exactly.

10:52Well done.
10:54APPLAUSE
10:57That was a bit of a win, wasn't it?
10:59Well done, Amy.
11:01What about the eight from the corner, then?
11:04We managed to get it up to nine.
11:06No.

12:29Well done, ma'am.

12:42needs a Y unfortunately and there's only one two for gutter yeah so I have to
12:48disallow both sorry but that was a bit of a flop then what's the corner good we
12:55did get grazier grazier yeah so we finally we did yes we started with grazer
13:02and then put an eye in it and a grazier is a person who rears cattle sheep for
13:06market thank you all right so 27 plays 20 no movement there and it's Amy's
13:12numbers game Amy two large and four small please thank you me two from the
13:17top row and four not and for this round we have two five six another two and

13:35so
14:02well Amy three four two and Tom three four one
14:07three four two both of you okay Amy off we go five minus two is three times a
14:14hundred three hundred add the fifty three fifty and then minus the six and the

14:25six yeah fifty plus five plus two fifty seven times six same result well done not
14:32quite there though Rachel what you reckon three four one I found a way if you say six divided
14:38by two is three 100 minus three is ninety seven five minus the other two is another three times
14:46those together for two hundred and ninety one and add on the fifty for three four one
14:50oh perfect
14:51thank you
14:54that's wonderful
14:56so thirty forty twenty seven
14:59Tom just in the lead as we turn to Michaela Michaela spring watch
15:04it's a lovely show
15:05what's the sort of
15:06what's most frequently asked of you
15:09what question pops up more than any other
15:12yeah I think the thing is um spring watch by the second week always turns into death watch
15:18you know we're watching all these great animals and by week two everything's eaten everything else
15:22and so um one of the things we get asked a lot is you know why don't we do anything
15:28to save the wildlife
15:29and it's a question that a lot of people in natural history filmmaking get asked and it's a really difficult
15:34one
15:34because we always say we you know we're not Disney fine nature we don't we can't change what is happening
15:41and you can feel very empathetic towards the the predator and the prey but you can't interfere with it
15:49and there have been times where we have been sitting in meetings
15:53and we have taken you know an hour to discuss should we help that creature
15:59and I think we've only done it once
16:01and it was when we had and I can't remember I think they were blue tits
16:05and they were in a cone one of those traffic cones
16:09and it was a sweet little nest and they were nesting in the bottom of this traffic cone
16:12and then we obviously realized we put a little camera inside that there was no way those chicks
16:17were going to be able to fly up and out of the cone
16:20and we thought this is a man-made thing
16:24and a predator is unlikely to be able to get into that cone
16:29and actually make use of those dead chicks
16:31because that's what you've got to think
16:32those dead chicks are going to feed something else that will help their young
16:35and so we actually did put a little hole a bit further down
16:39and something in there so those chicks could get out
16:42but as I say we discussed it for an hour this dilemma
16:45and it's always a big dilemma
16:48you know it's the circle of life
16:49and it's when you put cameras on it that you see it
16:52that sort of thing goes on every spring
16:54it's going on all the time
16:56and as I say you can feel very empathetic
16:58towards anything that's being eaten and doesn't make it
17:01but you think of the benefit that has to the animal that it's being fed to
17:05that's perfectly put
17:11I'm very wise
17:13and I'm glad you drilled a little hole in that traffic cone
17:16because you're right otherwise for what
17:19you know
17:19yeah
17:2034 to 27 Tom in the lead
17:22Tom your letters game

20:22No, that's brilliant.

23:51That wasn't there for eight.
23:52But there is a nine.
23:54There, in fact.
23:56Yes?
23:56Which is tensional.
23:59Tensional?
23:59Mm.
24:00Oh, the tensional strength of steel.
24:02Yes, exactly.
24:03Or you might talk about tensional cracks in steel.
24:07Or tensional stresses.
24:09OK.
24:10Yeah, that kind of thing.
24:12Oh, good.

24:51And a last one.
24:52A.
24:53And here's the countdown clock.
24:55Like,
24:56And a vowel.
24:58And a vowel.
25:24We'll be shopping.
25:25well Tom seven Amy seven yes Tom misused and the same word and misused
25:38excellent players and in the corner we got a couple of eights we got misreads
25:45yes and surmised yes surmised thank you for that 63 to 58 they're clinging on to
25:55each other these two as we break for Susie and her wonderful origins of words
26:00yes Susie well I will often say that one of my favorite etymologies favorite word
26:05origins is that of toadying up to somebody so being incredibly obsequious
26:11and servile and a little bit slimy so you might think that sliminess is where the
26:16connection comes in with the toad but actually it's not it goes back to quacks
26:21or charlatans who would hope to sell their medicinal their wonderful potions
26:26at fairgrounds in medieval market towns and they would gather a huge crowd and
26:31they would get their assistant to swallow a toad that at that point was supposed to
26:35be poisonous or believed to be poisonous and then he would cure cure his assistant
26:42by giving him one of his medicinal wares and he would be miraculously recovered
26:46and all would be fine so it was a way of sort of selling these supposedly fantastic
26:51medicines and because the assistant was seen as being completely fawning to the charlatan himself
26:56to toady up to somebody came from that routine that toad eating routine so I was remembering that the
27:02other day as it happens and I was thinking about other expressions that we get from carnivals and
27:07fairgrounds because there are many in English if you knock the spots off someone again you might think that
27:13comes from the animal world or the animal kingdom it doesn't actually began in the
27:17America in the mid-1800s and carnivals commonplace really popular all over the
27:22country and the most popular sideshow was the shooting gallery and all comers
27:27would test their skills of markmanship and the most used target for this was a
27:33playing card which of course has got sort of spots on so to speak to mark the suit of the
27:37card and so the

27:59managed to knock the spots off the cards or win a prize and indeed in any of the other side
28:03shows
28:04and if you didn't manage it you might have been close but you didn't get the cigar
