00:00Dingo, a heavy attack on the level of the world!
00:31Welcome back to another episode of Other Voices, and this is a very special one. Where are we going, Hugh?
00:36Well, we're going home to my home, Wales, from the west coast of Ireland to the west coast of Cymru.
00:41Cymru, Amber.
00:42D'ar jawn, Mekie.
00:43D'ar jawn, Ani Mac. Very good. Yeah, it was there, and it was wonderful, a really special weekend.
00:50Yeah, we have such an amazing array of performances for you. All these brilliant artists who descended on Cardigan for
00:56the weekend.
00:57But let's start with Carlo's Finest. This is Ye Vagabonds.
01:12Bells ringing in the buttered yard
01:15Evicted this morn, thought you might have heard
01:19At five in the morning they caught their way
01:23We were singing in the kitchen when the bailiffs charged
01:27We were the only those wild things played
01:30Airfoot dancing in the concrete coast
01:34Swimming in a river of smoke and serotonin
01:37Our forgotten city of glitter and blowers
01:40I watched the water rise
01:50And I held my cover maybe for too long
02:05There was a time we kept each other floating
02:08All tied together, falling up and down
02:11Thought for a time we could all back to float
02:14But the old river rose and swallowed our town
02:17There was a time we didn't get an answer
02:21I said all the things I was bad at the start
02:24You cut me loose and drifted away
02:27Tried and failed, wandered apart
02:30I watched the water rise
02:40And I held my cover maybe for too long
02:56So maybe it'll come in just a year
02:57And I held my cover up I said all the things I can do
02:58But I said all the things I've kept
03:02And it was really good
03:02And I ended up with Katya
03:02I love you
03:10I am not getting the money
03:10You understand I am not getting the money
03:14So if you are a little bit
03:20I wash the water
03:24Rise and I have my cover
03:33I wash the water
03:38Rise and I have my cover
03:42Maybe four to one
03:58What a year it's been for Panic Shack
04:02But take us back to the beginning, Sarah
04:04How and when did you form?
04:06So we formed in 2018
04:09When we tried just to do something
04:12Because the girls had to learn the guitars and everything
04:15And then we had our first gig in 2019
04:17The end of 2019
04:19Tell us about the early gigs then, Emily
04:22Like the first Panic Shack ones
04:23What do you remember about them?
04:26Not knowing what I was doing at all
04:27I remember being like
04:29I can't hear anything
04:30I'm like my amp's not even on or something
04:32Or like I start playing
04:33And my picks and all the strings
04:34And I'm like everything's out of tune
04:36But it was like a baptism of fire
04:38Because none of us could really play
04:39It was crazy
04:40We were just figuring it out on the go
04:42But weirdly everyone seemed to like it
04:45It seemed
04:46People were like
04:47The chaos
04:47Filling out the room straight away
04:49And you're like
04:49Why are there all these people here?
04:52We had like four songs
04:54Of our own
04:55Three covers
04:56Yeah
04:56So it was just a bit slapdash
04:59Just trying it out
05:00I think one thing about us is like
05:02We done wait for perfection
05:03We just kind of like
05:04Let's get up
05:05And let's do it
05:06Make a fool of ourselves
05:07Yeah
05:07Do that a lot
05:08Yeah
05:08Tell me a little bit about the topics on the record
05:12Because there's some proper feminist topics on the album
05:17Body shaming, yes
05:18That's the topic of the song Gok Wan, isn't it?
05:21Gok Wan, yeah
05:22Of course
05:22Like we grew up in the noughties
05:24Where every show was about your weight, your looks
05:29Yeah, we just had so much pent up feelings about that
05:33And we thought let's get it out there
05:34And Gok Wan, I think, did it well
05:37Yeah
05:38I stopped for two hours a day
05:40Not enough to keep the red
05:41Bring your shame away
05:42If my stomach gets flat
05:43And my ass is perky
05:45Maybe I could get everybody to like me
05:47Fingers for dinner
05:48Starving yourself
05:49Training as you've done
05:50Saps on the shelf
05:51Fills of stripes and skipping meals
05:54Never takes as good as skinny feels
05:56I look good
05:57This is all I do
06:00If I use yours
06:02Enjoy the view
06:05I look good
06:06This is all I do
06:09If I use yours
06:10Enjoy the view
06:14I squat for five hours a day
06:18Fat or pregnant
06:19Thin or dying
06:21What would the tabloids say?
06:23And I throw up everything I need
06:27Cause nothing tastes as good as skinny feels
06:32I squat for 12 hours a day
06:34I'm a weapon to have people on a belly chain
06:36And all I tell
06:38I'm having a cat or breathe
06:39The way to focus
06:39Is your fluffy
06:40Bag of feet
06:41Put these brains
06:42When you look at the bones I'm mine
06:44And that's it from your mind
06:45I'm nothing to refine
06:46Nothing really matters
06:47Because nothing's all I feel
06:48Something never has to go through the skinny feels
06:50I look good
06:52This is all I do
06:55My body's yours
06:56Inside the view
06:59I look good
07:01This is all I do
07:03My body's yours
07:05Inside the view
07:08Wanna be the smallest girl that's ever lived
07:12Wanna go down in history for being thin
07:18Wanna be the smallest girl that's ever lived
07:22Wanna go down in history for being thin
07:26Yeah
07:27Yeah
07:45I look good
07:47This is all I do
07:49My body's yours
07:51It's like a girl
07:54I look good
07:56This is all I do
07:58My body's yours
08:00It's like a girl
08:09Now this next band are one of the most popular live bands in Wales
08:13Their album is Mill on the Hill
08:15Normally they're absurd
08:17This pop is quite theatrical
08:20And a lot of fun to watch on stage
08:22Now tonight it's fun
08:23But it's also very special
08:25Something a bit more subdued
08:27From the Cardiff-based band
08:29Who've toured all around Europe
08:31Here they are at Other Voices
08:33It's Mellin Mellin
08:34The adventure began at five
08:41On the 6th of May
08:44T'was a Sunday
08:51Can't remember the year
08:53I don't tend to think of things
08:56And there you were
08:58Before my eyes
09:00Tipped away the trickle of flowers
09:04Not sure of the kind
09:06But you never tickled my interest
09:20To see
09:22One day my dear mother
09:23She would cry
09:25She said I'm worried about the digital addiction
09:29Do you realise this isn't real life
09:32This is just another fantasy
09:34To see
09:35On my job
09:36With the throne
09:37Eyes on the coffin
09:39But it's falling to keep
09:42Eyes back on the ultimate times
09:44Let's complete the best love only in me
10:11It's racist around my brain
10:14Oh, please don't leave me
10:23It keeps racing around my brain
10:30You're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen
10:35Well, I suppose I could step outside
10:38I could climb up in my dirty door window
10:43But I'm not sure of the point
10:45I've never been to see
10:46Which benefits it gets him in need
10:48Yes, I'm in love with the virtual times
10:51From the mountain I've looked into the people
10:56This is the real life
10:58This is not some fantasy
11:00And that's the real life
11:27Thank you very much.
11:38This next artist is seen as one of the most exciting emerging out of Ireland of late.
11:44She's from the Shannos tradition of singing and blends the electronica with the ethereal to devastating effect.
11:52This is Roche.

23:20Bethany fel ca dir chamar
23:55I need the boy, I need the boy, I need the boy.
24:21Abdu Kakeke, welcome to Wales, how are you?
24:24Great, it feels good to be in beautiful Wales.
24:26Your music's brilliant, we're so excited to see you in the church.
24:30Tell me how long you've been making music, because it took you a while to realise that
24:36you could make music.
24:37Yeah, five years now actually pursuing it, but since 12 I wanted to be a rapper, artist,
24:44and I guess it just took finishing school to realise I want to pursue this full time.
24:49And one of my friends, Monjola, used to put on rap events when I was like 18, and he had
24:55like local Irish rappers playing.
24:57And I think that was actually like a big point for me, seeing like local lads performing and
25:02then me kind of being like, I'm kind of better than them.
25:05And it's actually tangible to do it, you know?
25:07Are they still rapping?
25:08No.
25:11Because for a long time, and it was the same in the UK as well, like, you know, rap music
25:15was from America.
25:16Yeah, yeah.
25:16So everybody was just rapping in an American accent.
25:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:19Thinking that's what you had to do.
25:20It just makes, it does make sense because you're like, this is a very look, geographic, specific
25:25genre, and you're like, my favourite artists sound like this, and I want to be like my favourite
25:29artist, and then you're like, I'll be Outkast, I'll be Andro 2000, and then for me, I realised
25:33recent years, like what I liked most about those people, it was the fact that they were being
25:37themselves, and I feel like that's what everyone should be trying to be, you know, the best version
25:42of themselves, and to be the most themselves.
25:45I'll do it again, and again, and again Don't know what I said, but I said, what I said
25:51So I'll be here forever, and again I'll be getting jealous, cause I can't I'll do it
25:58again, and again, and again Baby girl is shooting the drugs and my friends
26:03So I'll be here forever, and again I'll be Helen Keller, and again
26:12Zola Crenvin, who made me lose, cause I'll Caroline, he kicked my fuckin' runs
26:14I'm badin' cool But I'm good for mine
26:17I'm gettin' sober and sickin' around with me
26:20I will speak to my stomach But that boy, you agree
26:23mix it in Chill If you say you don't care
26:28And it feels so wrong
26:31Well, why are you still here?
26:34Never heard you do it
26:35I'm a freaking dumb gully
26:37I'll be running around like bombers
26:39You're doing dumb stuff
26:40They said that you've got a temper
26:42Like when it's done
26:43Why am I sitting here?
26:45Why are you sitting here?
26:47I don't make a feeling sin
26:48Darling it up
26:49You finished mine
26:51I said it is a gamma parole
26:52I know that your head is away from the door
26:56Don't feel it
26:57You're doing nothing at all
26:59Nothing at all
27:01Easy cause I already kicked this bucket once
27:03I played it cool
27:05But I'm just nhưng
27:07I'm getting sober
27:08It's a hammer out of the drums
27:10Stick to my hospital
27:11Easy cause I already kicked this bucket once
27:16I played it cool
27:17But I'm just mystical
27:19I'm getting sober
27:20It's a hammer out of the drums
27:22Stick to my sollicây
27:24I can't wait for you to come
27:31If you break all of my bones
27:35If you take all of your calls
27:38Since you came up on a smile
27:40I believe you came up
27:43I'm a ridiculous, I'm sorry
27:46You took death and you thought I'd get
27:50You would have get to yourself
27:53When I do a trail
27:56Easy to learn, you need to fucking run
27:59I'm getting cool, I'm not trying to run
28:02I'm getting started to learn the truth
28:05Since you come out on a mile, I'm on the way
28:09Easy to learn, you can't fucking run
28:11I'm getting cool, I'm not trying to run
28:14I'm getting summer, I'm not trying to run
28:18Since you come out on a mile, I know you will
28:37One of the exciting things when Other Voices comes to town
28:41is that there's music everywhere,
28:43not just on the main stage in St Mary's Church here in Cardigan,
28:47but in the venues and the nooks and crannies
28:50all over this very special place.
28:53It's called The Music Trail
28:55and it's full of some incredible talent.
29:04I'm Gethin from the band Workhouse.
29:06I play bass and keys.
29:08And yeah, we're here in Llesiai Arryll in Aberteifi
29:10and we're so excited for this weekend.
29:13It's going to be great.
29:18We just played at Muldan.
29:20I think we were the first act on, which was really cool.
29:23And then we're on to a cellar next,
29:25which will be a stark contrast, I think,
29:27like one from a bigger stage to a smaller venue,
29:30but we're really excited for that.
29:38Riding only hits, played softly from their fingertips,
29:46bring in punk back, some angels dress in black,
29:52singing in a sky.
29:53I just did a wee gig in The Angel.
29:55Is it called The Angel?
29:56The Angel Hotel.
29:58That was an acoustic show and I've done a couple of wee band shows
30:02throughout the town throughout the weekend.
30:07It's always been like a bucket list or a goal to come to other voices.
30:11It's brilliant to see local artists get recognition through this festival
30:17and it's so amazing to be able to be part of it now.
30:29Thank you very much.
30:31I've been George Christian.
30:32Bye.
30:41I just played a set with a band I'm part of called Afro Cluster
30:46and we had a wicket time.
30:51One of my favorite things about other voices and being here in Cardigan
30:55is a band plays here and plays another gig,
30:58you know, and quite possibly catch them if you miss the,
31:00you know, half a set.
31:06This is my third of the voices.
31:09Feels like it's getting better every year.
31:18You never know what type of venue you're going to get.
31:20The good thing about the voices, all the venues are pretty good.
31:22And it's cool that they're really kind of vamping,
31:25like what's this, like a pizza place or something?
31:28Not tonight it wasn't.
31:35And yet I just equation and I figure it out.
31:44You just show me the?
31:45Get to see like a really wide range of different types of acts.
31:49So a lot of festivals at the minute they kind of,
31:51They're very curated to be one kind of a thing.
31:55Whereas their voice is a little bit more grassrootsy.
31:59I'm yet to go explore it,
32:01so that's kind of what I want to go do now.
32:05I'm looking forward to seeing who's playing,
32:07learning something new, stealing some ideas.
32:18It's just great to see the Welsh and Irish artists
32:21having this sort of exchange,
32:23just the energy that you get from Kelps in general.
32:26It's such a nice feel here.
32:28I feel like everyone's here for the music, people care,
32:30they want to listen to you, they want to know about who you are,
32:33no matter the genre of music.
32:36It's really cool.
32:41CHOIR SINGS
32:49I last saw our next band supporting Fontaine's DC
32:53in the arena in Cardiff.
32:55Tonight's gig is a little bit more intimate,
32:57but they've just released their third album called Cosplay.
33:01Here's Sorry.
33:02CHOIR SINGS
33:03In the pink and the cloud
33:05You think they've just stopped
33:07And I won't let go
33:09You want
33:10Anyone else around
33:12I think they're seated in the dark
33:15For your little girls
33:16And I can say, no, no
33:18Ain't got no words
33:20I think you've shut me up
33:22And I'm in a spot
33:24Fall beneath it
33:25And I'm doing my
33:26Cross my heart and pray
33:28I'll let you find it one day
33:30And the other did you say
33:31I said I love you
33:33Echo, echo, echo, echo
33:37Echo, echo, echo
33:40Echo, echo, echo
33:40I love you
33:41Echo, echo, echo, echo
33:43I love you
33:44Echo, echo, echo, echo
33:47I love you
33:48We can end it here
33:51Or we can go back to the store
33:53To control your mind
33:54When I control my thought
33:56I think when it's easy now
33:58I think I'm
33:59F***ing it all
34:00When it felt so good
34:02When it was just in the store
34:04You can talk all day
34:06Or we can just
34:07We can lie it all day
34:10Just the two parts
34:11Just the only thing you think
34:14If you want it, this is great
34:15I can take it all the way
34:17I love you
34:19Echo, echo, echo, echo
34:21Echo, I love you
34:22Echo, echo, echo
34:26Echo, echo, echo, echo
34:29I love you
34:30Echo, echo, echo, echo
34:32Echo, echo, echo
34:33I love you
34:34Echo, echo, echo, echo
34:37Echo, echo, echo
34:37I love you
34:38Echo, echo, echo, echo
34:41I love you
34:42Echo, echo, echo, echo
34:44Echo, echo, echo
34:45I love you
34:45Echo, echo, echo, echo
34:48Echo, echo, echo, echo
34:59Oh, my God.
35:43Oh, my God.
35:55Oh, my God.
36:14Oh, my God.
36:17Oh, my God.

39:14Oh, my God.
39:44Oh, my God.
39:50Oh, my God.
39:53Oh, my God.
39:54Oh, my God.
40:51Oh, my God.
41:00Oh, my God.
41:51Oh, my God.
42:21Oh, my God.
42:31Oh, my God.
42:56Oh, my God.
43:39Oh, my God.
44:00Oh, my God.
44:20Oh, my God.
44:33Oh, my God.
44:35Oh, my God.
44:37Oh, my God.
45:19Oh, my God.
45:56Oh, my God.
46:02Oh, my God.
46:20Oh, my God.
