00:12Hey everyone, James Patrick Stewart. It's Friday. It's time for another story. Got one.
00:18This catapulted me back to my first day of kindergarten at Cardin Malibu School. I remember
00:24the cover vividly. Written in 1956 by Eugene Zion, illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham.
00:29And the story just, I got it, you know. I was like, kindergarten, who doesn't love getting
00:34dirty? This is Harry the Dirty Dog. He's a dog with a plant. Harry the Dirty Dog. Harry
00:45was a white dog with black spots and he liked everything except getting a bath. So one day
00:53when he heard the water running in the tub, he took the scrubbing brush and he buried it
01:03in the backyard. Then he ran away from home. He played where they were fixing the street
01:17and he got very dirty. He played at the railroad. He got even dirtier. See him on the bridge?
01:33He played tag with other dogs and he became dirtier still. He slid down a coal chute and he got
01:47the
01:47dirtiest of all. In fact, he changed from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white
01:56spots.
02:01Well, there were many other things to do, but Harry began to wonder if his family thought he really
02:08had run away. Plus he was tired and he was hungry too. So without stopping, he ran all the way
02:22back
02:22home. When Harry got to his house, he crawled through the fence and he sat looking at the back door.
02:37One of the family looked out and said, there's a strange dog in the backyard. By the way,
02:43has anyone seen Harry? Has anyone seen Harry? Well, when Harry heard this, he tried very hard to show them
02:55that he was Harry. He started to do his old clever tricks. He flip-flopped. He flop-flipped. He rolled
03:04over.
03:04He played dead. He danced. And he sang. He did these tricks over and over again. But everyone shook their
03:22heads.
03:22Harry gave up. He walked slowly towards the gate. But then suddenly, he stopped. He ran to a corner of
03:42the garden
03:43and started to dig furiously. And soon he jumped away from the hole, barking short, happy barks.
03:53He found the scrubbing brush. And carrying it in his mouth, he ran into the house.
04:03Up the stairs, he dashed with the family, following closely behind.
04:14He jumped into the bathtub. He sat up, begging with a scrubbing brush in his mouth. That was a tricky
04:19he'd certainly never done before. This little dummy wants a bath, said the little girl.
04:23So the father said, why don't you and your brother give him one?
04:32Harry's bath was the soapiest he had ever had. It worked like magic. As soon as the children started
04:38to scrubbing the scrubbing, they began shouting, Mommy, Daddy, look, look, look, come quick.
04:45It's Harry! It's Harry! It's Harry! It's Harry! They cried.
04:49Harry wagged his tail and was very, very happy.
04:52His family combed and brushed him lovingly, and he became once again a white dog with black spots.
05:06It was wonderful to be home. After dinner, Harry fell asleep in his favorite spot, happily dreaming
05:13of how much fun it had been getting dirty. He slept so soundly. He didn't even feel the scrubbing
05:22brush. He'd hidden under his pillow.
05:29That dirty dog. Harry the dirty dog.
05:37All right, everybody.
