00:00Scientists just found out that humans aren't the only animals capable of imagining things that
00:03aren't real. Kids do pretend play when they're around a year and a half and I was totally the
00:08same. I used to love tea parties just drinking out of like empty cups, pinkies up, but we aren't
00:12alone in this. Meet Kazi the Bonogo. He was trained to understand English and could communicate
00:16with a touch screen. This did make him a very unique bonovo, but it also made doing experiments
00:20with pretend played much easier for scientists. As an experiment, scientists pretended to pour
00:25juice into empty cups and then poured that made-up juice from one cup back into the jug. And when
00:30they asked Kazi which cup had juice in it, he chose the one that was full of pretend juice way
00:34more than
00:35the empty one. That was obviously really exciting, but researchers needed to double check that Kazi
00:39didn't actually think that cup was full of real juice. So they tested pouring real juice into one
00:44cup and leaving the other cup empty. When asked, Kazi always wanted a cup full of real juice. And then
00:48they experimented putting fake grapes into two jars and then emptied one of the jars. And just like
00:53before, Kazi correctly pointed to where the fake grapes were much more frequently than if he'd just
00:57been randomly guessing. Kazi obviously didn't initiate this pretend play, but the fact that he
01:01was able to follow along shows that he has the mental capacity to imagine things that aren't really
01:06there. And since bonobos along with chimps are our closest living relatives, this suggests that our
01:10ability to imagine is over 6 million years old.
