00:00Let's be clear about this. Ideas are cheap and they're simple.
00:04You know, I can sit down and think of an idea and it takes me that long.
00:09But it's only the implementation of that idea, only the skill of the people that you work with, that really
00:17brings that idea to fruition.
00:46For me, a God game is about freedom.
00:51It's about a freedom to approach the world in any way you want.
00:56There are no limits. You can't, you know, there's no, you never say, I can't do this and I can't
01:02do that.
01:02It feels like a big sort of clockwork machine in a way, if that makes sense.
01:06It's nice that you go in there and tinker with things and change settings.
01:09If you want to rip a tree out of the ground, you can do it. If you want to change
01:12the weather, you can do it.
01:14And see how that sort of affects the sort of ecosystem of everything.
01:18And that is the heart of what God game should be.
01:21It should allow you to do things, to experiment with things, to experiment with approaches.
01:28But that freedom gives you a sense of power.
01:31And that's what God game should be all about.
01:35A meeting I had with Peter about three years ago, and he said he was working on this new game
01:42idea, Master of Albion.
01:44And he wanted this to be like a mixture of all the previous games we'd ever worked on.
01:50All the big hits that we'd done.
01:52Dungeon Keeper, Fable, Black and White was a big inspiration.
01:57So he wanted a mixture of all those games in this one game.
02:01It was almost like a legacy type game.
02:05I mean, it's interesting to be working on a God game that's obviously mixing genres.
02:09So the God aspect, I guess, is like the rapper for it all.
02:13But the fact that you've kind of got what you'd consider traditional God-like mechanics,
02:17where you're sort of, you know, looking down on the landscape,
02:19but then you can go right in there and actually literally possess a hero or a character or a chicken.
02:26So there's two things to say about the God game genre.
02:29The first thing to say is it's a withering genre of game.
02:35You know, it's a small percentage of that pie chart of all games that people play.
02:42And for me, that would be incredibly sad to see it wither to nothing.
02:47And if we're going to reinvigorate it, then there has to be something special.
02:53There has to be something new.
02:54There has to be something fresh and innovational about what we present to the player.
02:59And that's what I believe Masters of Albion means.
03:21So I think one of the things that I kind of obsess about a little bit
03:25and that was what I kind of wanted to bring to the project when I joined, really,
03:29was sort of emphasising the kind of miniature feel of it,
03:34although you can go in sometimes and possess the characters, so you're in the world.
03:38When you're more in God mode, I like the idea of it almost feeling like a sort of Warhammer-style
03:43miniature
03:44or something that's on a table that's animating.
03:46When I'm talking with other artists, we sort of use, you know, nicely sculpted figures and things
03:51as the sort of reference point rather than realistic-looking humans.
03:57And sometimes it's a bit of a struggle because, you know, someone like Pete would be like,
04:01OK, let's use realistic-looking hair.
04:03And I'm like, no, you're kind of missing the point of what the idea is here.
04:06They're supposed to be like sculpted characters.
04:08You don't have a sculpted character with, like, real hair on it.
04:11If you turned up to your Warhammer knight with, like, you know,
04:15your human hair sculpted on your barbarians,
04:19you'd probably get kicked out from being some kind of weirdo, wouldn't you?
04:21I don't know.
04:22I mean, there's some examples of...
04:24I was doing some of the action blocks for the game,
04:28which are like the sort of machine part of the buildings, you know,
04:31like for the windmill, for example.
04:34So I had to go and research, like,
04:36how do you actually make flour from wheat and stuff?
04:39So I learned all about how millstones work
04:41and had to invent my own mini version of that.
04:44So that was kind of fascinating.
04:46Creativity in general tends to be born from restrictions, I would argue.
04:52You know, like, I've got...
04:53I like music, I've got my music studio,
04:55but I can boot up a sound package, like Logic or something,
05:00and there's so many buttons and so many things to twiddle.
05:03You can just get lost in that
05:05and end up doing nothing.
05:07Whereas you give me, like, a basic tape recorder
05:09and a microphone and say,
05:10right, you've got to make a song,
05:12probably going to have more chances of making something with that,
05:15to be honest with you,
05:16because there's a lot more limitation and restriction.
05:31Every game that I ever do,
05:33the first thing that I do is get the ambient sound bed sounding realistic.
05:38So that's all the birds tweeting,
05:41all the countryside sounding good,
05:44all the rivers and streams,
05:45everything that makes a world come to life.
05:48That's the first thing that I approach.
05:50The big challenge is going from music,
05:52which forms the bed of the game.
05:54So you've got all your ambient type music
05:56moving between different regions.
05:58So that's all your bed of ambient style music.
06:03This game also has a very script-led storytelling way
06:09of taking you through the game
06:11so that you're not just playing the game as a god.
06:15you're also watching this story unfold.
06:17Each of those story elements obviously needs script-based music.
06:22So how we blend between that ambient bed I was just talking about
06:26into the script-based music
06:28is one of the biggest challenges for me
06:30because I don't want it to feel like,
06:32stop that piece of music, start this piece of music.
06:35I want it to actually blend in
06:37so that it feels like it's all part of the same story.
06:40I always approach anything that I do
06:42based on what I'm imagining first
06:45and then I try to achieve that
06:48with the software and the tools that I've got.
06:52I never like to just sit down and play.
06:56When I feel like I'm coming up with my most creative ideas and things
06:58it's just because I'm playing with something
07:00and the ideas kind of pop out of that.
07:03I'm not sitting there pondering on a chair beforehand
07:06what my idea is.
07:07Always starts with imagination
07:08and imagining what something,
07:11what you're trying to achieve.
07:12and if I don't have that, I have nothings.
07:15The process of doing and playing where the things emerge
07:18so I think that's really important.
07:20You know, I like slapstick kind of humour
07:23and brash kind of things
07:26so the idea of contrasting a very cute kind of cosy, chilled thing
07:32with sudden, extreme violence and utter chaos.
07:38This one is a catapult
07:40This one's a trebuchet
07:43They're all different
07:44depending on which top you put on top of a turret
07:48depends on which sound you get in the game
07:50but obviously all these are given 3D values
07:54I can actually tell it at what distance it starts to fade out
07:58and at what distance you don't hear it at all.
08:04I like the places by the babbling brooks if you like
08:09I like those areas where it just feels peaceful and calm
08:13I also like the areas up in the mountains
08:16where it just feels quite cold
08:18but also just free
08:20you know, freedom to be up there
08:31Here we are at St Martha's Church
08:35just outside Guildford
08:36this beautiful place
08:38I find really inspirational
08:40especially when thinking about God Games
08:42because you can see over there
08:44there's a little village
08:45and that's full of life
08:47it's full of bustling life
08:48but I'm up here
08:49I've got this God's view
08:51and I can imagine reaching out with my hand
08:54my hand can almost cover that whole village
08:57and plucking a little house up
09:00and moving it over there
09:01and that is the essence of what a God game is
09:04and it's views like this
09:06that have really inspired me
09:08about that scale
09:10that scale of going from the intimate
09:13from, you know, going to where you can see
09:15a leaf on a tree
09:16up to this God view
09:18and nothing more inspirational
09:21than this view
09:29Daniel, do you want to start off
09:33so you can run through the mandate board?
09:35Daniel, you added a lot of P1s recently
09:38so this list looks a bit bigger now
09:41anything you're worried about?
09:45I mean, I'm always going to be worried about
09:46the quantity of things that are on there still
09:49obviously
09:50with the little time left
09:52I think it's just making sure
09:53we understand what's most important
09:56and order everything correctly
09:58but yeah, that's my main worry
09:59and the other thing that I've
10:02it's always been a little bit of a mystery to me
10:04but I'm making up the codes in the room
10:06I've got an idea of
10:06I don't know when it's supposed to be locked
10:08with the April date
10:10but when was going to be the lock
10:12the lock, isn't it?
10:13like no one's allowed to change the thing
10:15now it's just pure bug things
10:16that was last month, smart
10:18so that was last month
10:20if we are forced into
10:22obviously we are not doing that though
10:24well, that's because you keep
10:25you keep adding stuff to the game
10:27you keep adding stuff
10:29we can't stop
10:30we can't lock until you stop adding stuff
10:34what am I adding?
10:36well, the chicken building
10:39oh yeah
10:40New Broward Lake Mountain
10:41that's changed by this
10:42New Armour
10:43it's just more and more stuff
10:45and more and more stuff keeps going in
10:47and we can't possibly say we're locked
10:49until more and more stuff is not going in
10:52yeah, well okay
10:53we're almost there with that
11:05so the last time I was here
11:07was I think
11:08at the end of Black and White
11:12and it was
11:13six o'clock in the morning
11:15around about that time
11:17this is the only place that opened
11:18and all of us came down
11:20to celebrate
11:22the game-going goldmaster
11:24yeah, because we'd worked through the night
11:25yeah, we'd worked through the night
11:26I had
11:27probably
11:28bacon
11:29sausage
11:29eggs
11:31chips
11:32fried toast
11:34ham
11:34mushrooms
11:36probably the full works
11:37I probably did as well
11:38yeah
11:38or I had a croissant
11:40or something like that
11:42do they do croissons here?
11:44yeah, like croissons
11:45they used to laugh at you
11:47when you ordered it
11:48yeah, probably
11:51it's like we've never been apart
11:53no, it's true
11:54it just slotted in so easily
11:56coming back together
11:57yeah
11:57and I think it is just the trust
12:00I have
12:02absolute trust in you guys
12:04and in
12:05you know
12:06what you do
12:07and everything that you do
12:09is of amazing quality
12:11yeah, for me
12:12it's just nice to better work
12:13in that way that
12:16well
12:16I've always worked
12:18for most of my
12:18time in the games industry
12:20but it's becoming
12:21rarer and rarer
12:22I think
12:24certainly if you go to
12:25a big corporate company
12:26or something
12:26they can't embrace this
12:28they can't
12:28there's a level of paranoia
12:30there that is
12:31destructive as well
12:32everything has to be
12:33pre-agreed
12:35and pre-backed up
12:37by data
12:38and all that sort of stuff
12:39and by the time you get to that
12:40you've forgotten what you were
12:41even talking about
12:41anyway
12:42so it's just
12:43it's just horrible
12:44I have got the ultimate
12:46defence strategy
12:47for my town
12:48is it turrets
12:50if you feast yourself
12:52on turrets
12:53you're just being very lazy
12:55well that's what I'm doing
12:57losing the game
12:58I did embrace the idea
12:59of just moving my turrets
13:00around
13:01I'd sort of almost forgotten
13:02that you could do that
13:02and you can
13:04you know
13:05you see all these creatures
13:06coming towards you
13:07just put a wall in front of you
13:09yeah
13:09that's the problem
13:11well you know
13:12you're done
13:13especially with the walls
13:14part of it
13:14that is such a unique element
13:17in the game
13:17I think
13:18I actually thought
13:18I'd beaten the game
13:20actually
13:20when we were doing
13:21the playthrough before
13:22because I found
13:22the giant rubber duck
13:24and that's really powerful
13:25and I was using it
13:27just to crush it
13:27it blows out of health
13:29and dies
13:29so I was really glad
13:30that is very satisfying
13:32I mean by the time
13:33I get to some of those
13:34bigger fights
13:35I've already combined
13:37my buildings
13:38with I don't know
13:39stand-alone turrets
13:40at that point
13:41so with the combat music
13:43that's my big push for march
13:44that's going to be
13:45because I think
13:45that's going to be
13:46the big win for the game
13:47is make the combat
13:49feel more dramatic
13:51especially
13:53and you're brilliant
13:54at doing this Russell
13:55if we start to telegraph
13:57the end of the combat
14:00so if it can get
14:02a little bit more dramatic
14:04as you get towards the end
14:05and then as you're
14:07mopping up the last few creatures
14:09then maybe the music
14:12the code is all there
14:14Gary's done all the code
14:15it's ready
14:15and it builds up
14:17in five levels
14:18so I'm just going to
14:20do that
14:22I remember sitting
14:23around a meeting
14:25talking about syndicate
14:27and you felt your leg
14:31and you're like
14:31oh my god
14:32you said
14:32I've got this huge bump
14:34on my leg
14:34and you put your hand
14:36up your trouser leg
14:37and you pulled out a sock
14:38from the previous night
14:47being a designer
14:48being an entrepreneur
14:49being a person
14:51that talks in the press
14:52being a person
14:54that looks at
14:55the accounts
14:57is like being
14:58a multi
14:59multi personality
15:01schizophrenic
15:02as a designer
15:03you want to
15:04you know
15:05you want to put everything
15:06in the game
15:07you don't care about
15:08the money
15:09you don't care about
15:10about the time
15:11you just want the best
15:13you can possibly get
15:14but an entrepreneur
15:15you realize
15:16that you've got
15:17limited resources
15:19and there is one resource
15:21that trumps everything else
15:25and that resource
15:26is not money
15:29it's boredom
15:32if you develop a game
15:33for too long
15:34the team that you're working with
15:37just get bored of it
15:38and no one
15:40is creative
15:41when they're bored
15:45I use games
15:47to escape this world
15:49to escape
15:50the pressures
15:52and turmoils
15:54in this world
15:54and to do that
15:57you need
15:58to relax players
16:01yes it's important
16:02to have a game
16:03with exciting moments
16:05but if it's too
16:06button twitchy
16:07all the time
16:08it's not going to be
16:09a relaxing experience
16:10and there is this
16:12the psychology
16:13of getting the brain
16:15into an alpha state
16:17it's a highly relaxed state
16:19where you don't have
16:21the voices in your head
16:23saying yeah
16:23what about the bills
16:24what about the kids
16:25what about the school
16:27you just have
16:28the focus on the game
16:30and I've strived
16:31to do that
16:32in almost every game
16:34I've done
16:35one of the big
16:37my big motivations
16:38is to give
16:40everyone
16:41at 22cans
16:42the experience
16:43of releasing
16:44a game
16:45that brings joy
16:49that's really
16:50what we want
16:51it brings joy
16:53to people
16:53if we can bring joy
16:55to people
16:56then I'm sure
16:57the game
16:57will be successful
16:58and I want
17:00everybody here
17:01to get that feeling
17:02of when they're
17:03sitting on the bus
17:04and talking to
17:06a total stranger
17:07and they say
17:07I've worked on
17:08Masters of Albion
17:09I've mastered Albion
17:10that was brilliant
17:11I loved that
17:11I loved it
17:15there is this
17:18it feels like
17:19a brick wall
17:19that I'm approaching
17:22I have no idea
17:23what's on the other
17:24side of the brick wall
17:25was what will
17:27happen to my mind
17:28when it doesn't
17:29have this thing
17:30to obsess over
17:31this thing
17:32to send me
17:33to sleep
17:33every night
17:34thinking of an idea
17:36this creative vision
17:38to shepherd through
17:40from start to finish
17:41what happens
17:42if you don't
17:43have that
17:44I don't know
17:45maybe I'll go
17:46a bit crazy
17:47maybe I'll go
17:48on some
17:49tropical beach
17:51somewhere
17:51and have my
17:53last few days
17:55sitting in the sun
17:57I doubt her that
18:02is not
18:02I don't know
18:02I don't know
18:03if I'm going to
18:03I don't know
18:22to be
18:22what will
18:22you
18:26you
18:27I don't know
18:27I don't know
18:29Ah!
19:07Grazie a tutti.
