Amnesty International say there are human rights concerns for fans at the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Transcript
00:00There are huge risks around this tournament this summer.
00:04This does not feel like the World Cup that was originally promised,
00:08the safe, free and equal World Cup and the inclusive World Cup
00:10that was promised eight years ago when it was awarded,
00:13but also maybe quite different how it felt even just 18 months ago.
00:16We know there are risks to fans and to local communities.
00:20In the USA, where three-quarters of the matches will take place,
00:24we've described it as there being a human rights emergency.
00:27There are people being arrested, detained and deported en masse
00:33by immigration agents.
00:35The scale of that is huge.
00:37About half a million people were deported from the US last year.
00:41That's six times as many people as we'll watch the World Cup final
00:45at the MetLife Stadium.
00:47So what's happening just really isn't normal.
00:50There is a climate of fear in the country.
00:53There are crackdowns on protests.
00:55There is increasing discriminatory context
00:57and also reduction of protections.
00:59And so there are risks to fans and to local communities.
01:03And it's something with just 10 weeks away
01:05that we really need FIFA to step up on,
01:08to put the measures in place necessary to protect people
01:10and to make sure that the World Cup can be a safe,
01:13free and equal place for everyone.
