00:02:16Oh, thank you very much.
00:02:26Hi. This is Leo. Can we sit for a minute?
00:02:30Sure, I guess.
00:02:36I'm Amber. I run Davenport Animal Haven.
00:02:40What's your name?
00:02:42Caleb.
00:02:43Nice to meet you, Caleb.
00:02:45Don't worry. He's friendly.
00:02:49Okay, Leo. Sit.
00:02:52Good boy.
00:02:53So, can I tell you about him?
00:02:55Yeah.
00:02:57Leo here was at the shelter,
00:02:59and when I would tidy his kennel,
00:03:01he'd sit by my side, just smiling and waiting.
00:03:05And then he would lick my hand afterwards,
00:03:07kind of like he was saying thanks.
00:03:09And I would take him on walks,
00:03:11and he would then look up every few steps,
00:03:14like checking to see if I was as happy as he was.
00:03:17And, you know, I wanted him to be happy all the time.
00:03:21So, I adopted him,
00:03:22and ended up finding my best friend.
00:03:25That sounds like you're both pretty lucky.
00:03:27Yeah.
00:03:28Now, he loves coming on visits,
00:03:29and he loves Christmas.
00:03:31How can you tell?
00:03:32His tail wags more,
00:03:34and he loves to take naps by the Christmas tree.
00:03:37How do you know he's not just finding a warmer spot in the wintertime?
00:03:40Because he'll nap by the Christmas tree at my apartment and at the shelter.
00:03:45And I even move the trees around each year,
00:03:47and he always goes back to them.
00:03:49Quirky dog.
00:03:51Yeah, he is.
00:03:53Fun personalities.
00:03:54Just like us.
00:03:57So, do you have any fun Christmas plans?
00:04:00Not really.
00:04:02It's probably hard to focus on anything when you're working so hard to get better.
00:04:06Yeah, it's hard to ignore.
00:04:10Here.
00:04:11Close your eyes.
00:04:12Why?
00:04:13Just try it with me.
00:04:15Are you one of those psychologists?
00:04:18No.
00:04:18Just a girl with a dog.
00:04:20Okay.
00:04:24Now what?
00:04:26Okay.
00:04:27I imagine you aren't here.
00:04:29Nothing hurts.
00:04:31It's Christmas.
00:04:33Where are you, and what are you doing?
00:04:37I'm...
00:04:40I don't know.
00:04:42Come on.
00:04:43There's no way to wrong answer.
00:04:45Fine.
00:04:50I'm...
00:04:50Outside.
00:04:54Is that it?
00:04:55I'm still thinking.
00:04:57Okay.
00:04:58Sorry.
00:04:58Keep going.
00:04:59I'm on a mountain.
00:05:01With fresh snow.
00:05:03And the air is cold, but...
00:05:06I like it.
00:05:08And I'm at the top of the slope looking down.
00:05:11And I'm ready to ski.
00:05:14I like that.
00:05:18So you're a skier.
00:05:20I've been a few times, but...
00:05:22It's more so that I'd be able to do it.
00:05:24And I wouldn't be worried about my leg being weak.
00:05:26Or scarred.
00:05:28Maybe one day.
00:05:29You won't even think about it.
00:05:33There's more to you than your hardest days.
00:05:37Like what?
00:05:40Like...
00:05:41You smile.
00:05:43It's a great one.
00:05:45See?
00:05:46Don't make me get out of my mirror.
00:05:47Please don't.
00:05:48I will take your word for it.
00:05:51Good.
00:05:52And where would you be at Christmas?
00:05:55I would be inside a cozy cabin.
00:05:59Sitting by a warm fire.
00:06:01And I'd be painting.
00:06:03And what's the painting of?
00:06:07Leo.
00:06:08Napping by a Christmas tree.
00:06:12Are you an artist?
00:06:13No.
00:06:14Maybe if things were different, but...
00:06:16I'm doing what I need to do right now.
00:06:18I do paint for fun.
00:06:20Every now and then.
00:06:21When I have time.
00:06:23Well, I'd like to see that painting.
00:06:26Really?
00:06:28Well, if I do it, you'll have to stop by the shelter to see it.
00:06:31You'd hang it up there?
00:06:32Sure.
00:06:33At least at Christmas time.
00:06:36Hi there.
00:06:37Hello.
00:06:39Well, I guess I should stop disturbing you.
00:06:43I mean, for stopping by, not for disturbing me.
00:06:48I'm glad we got to chat.
00:06:49Anytime you want to say hi to Leo or any of the other animals,
00:06:53stop by the shelter.
00:06:55Okay.
00:06:59Merry Christmas, Caleb.
00:07:01Merry Christmas.
00:07:03Come on, Leo.
00:07:04Come on, Leo.
00:07:07All right.
00:07:08The red one or the purple one.
00:07:22Thank you so much, Pastor.
00:07:23Take care.
00:07:24See you Sunday.
00:07:25Okay, bye.
00:07:28Maybe some wood glue would help secure it.
00:07:30I have a thicker bolt in place.
00:07:32Should do the trick.
00:07:34Thank you for doing this.
00:07:36No thanks needed.
00:07:37You want to grab some lunch?
00:07:39Yeah, sure.
00:07:41By the way, how's the job search going?
00:07:44On hold.
00:07:45Oh?
00:07:46What I've been doing so far has been, uh...
00:07:48Not your cup of tea?
00:07:50Yeah.
00:07:51I think I'm rushing into the career, and it's not working out.
00:07:55That office-bound marketing job had you climbing up the walls.
00:07:59Mm-hmm.
00:07:59Yep.
00:08:00Well, this is good.
00:08:02Take your time.
00:08:03And I remember, when I left the Army, I had this idea that I had to have everything figured out.
00:08:09But it's okay to take some time.
00:08:11It's only been a year for you, you know?
00:08:13More than that.
00:08:14Well, since the accident, sure.
00:08:16But then you had your surgery, and your recovery took a long time to get through.
00:08:22Maybe keep an eye out for something that's more fulfilling.
00:08:26You trying to get me to become a pastor?
00:08:27If that's what you want.
00:08:29But I think there are better options for you that would be more meaningful.
00:08:34There's always the veterans groups.
00:08:36There's somebody that would need your experience, you know?
00:08:39You could always volunteer temporarily.
00:08:42Maybe.
00:08:44All right.
00:08:45Burgers or tacos?
00:08:47Mm.
00:08:48Burgers.
00:08:49There's that new place on Everett Parkway.
00:08:52Pick me up a combo?
00:08:53Pick up?
00:08:54I asked you if you wanted to grab lunch.
00:08:56Oh, I walked right into that one.
00:08:59It's on me.
00:09:01Thanks.
00:09:04Hello.
00:09:05Hi, how are you?
00:09:05Nice to see you.
00:09:06Yeah.
00:09:12There.
00:09:15Is it straight?
00:09:17You are no help.
00:09:20Hey, James, is this straight?
00:09:22Close enough.
00:09:25Okay, good.
00:09:27Okay, guys.
00:09:28Let's get everyone something to eat and drink.
00:09:32Hello.
00:09:34Hi, Ryan.
00:09:35I didn't know you were coming.
00:09:36The best kind of surprise, right?
00:09:38Especially when you have this.
00:09:40What's that?
00:09:41See for yourself.
00:09:44Oh, wow.
00:09:45Ryan, you already donated to the shelter this year.
00:09:47Yeah, well, my accountant says I could use the deduction, so there you go.
00:09:53This is so helpful.
00:09:54The cost of running this place keeps going up, especially because we're at capacity.
00:09:58Glad I could help.
00:09:59You put so much time into this place.
00:10:02You could use a break, I'm sure.
00:10:03Yeah, well, the animals can always use another break.
00:10:06Anytime I have, I like to give them extra attention.
00:10:09But you can't overdo it and burn yourself out.
00:10:12I won't.
00:10:13Well, put that to good use then, and take it easy, okay?
00:10:17I'll try.
00:10:18And thank you again, really.
00:10:20Happy to.
00:10:22Well, I'll see you later.
00:10:24Okay, have a great day.
00:10:28Wasn't that so nice?
00:10:29Yeah.
00:10:31I think he likes you.
00:10:33What?
00:10:34No, he doesn't.
00:10:35He's a patient at my dad's dental practice.
00:10:36He's just being supportive of a good cause.
00:10:41Sure.
00:11:10Wait a second.
00:11:11Wait a second.
00:11:35Hi.
00:11:36How can I help you?
00:11:36Uh, sorry, you probably don't remember me.
00:11:39I was at the veterans clinic this time last year.
00:11:42And I, um, Leo, right?
00:11:46That's right.
00:11:51Wait.
00:11:52Caleb?
00:11:54Yeah.
00:11:54Good memory.
00:11:56Your leg.
00:11:57You're walking well.
00:11:58Oh, yeah, thanks.
00:11:59It, uh, took some time, but it's fine now as long as I'm not hiking.
00:12:03That's good.
00:12:04Unless you love hiking.
00:12:06Uh, so I came by because, well, I saw the sign and thought maybe you could use a hand.
00:12:12Like a volunteer.
00:12:14Oh.
00:12:15Yeah, that'd be great.
00:12:16Volunteers are awesome.
00:12:18Um, we can sure use the help, especially with the Christmas adoption drive coming up.
00:12:21But it is not glamorous.
00:12:24Is it supposed to be?
00:12:25I'm just warning you, I have one person who works here when he's not in class.
00:12:29I'm pretty much here all the time, but an extra set of hands would be very welcome.
00:12:32Great.
00:12:33Well, thanks.
00:12:34Uh, can I have your number?
00:12:36Uh, you know, so that we can coordinate schedules and such.
00:12:40Of course.
00:12:45Okay.
00:12:46The shelter info is on the front and then my cell's on the back.
00:12:49Great.
00:12:51Thanks for stopping by.
00:12:52I'll see you soon.
00:12:54Bye, Leo.
00:13:01What do you think, Leo?
00:13:05Hmm.
00:13:08I stopped by an animal shelter while I was out.
00:13:10Why?
00:13:11It was the one that brought the dogs by the veterans clinic when I was doing my PT.
00:13:14That was a while ago.
00:13:15Yeah, it stuck with me.
00:13:17I was thinking maybe it's a good way for me to keep busy right now.
00:13:20As a job or...
00:13:21Hmm, I'm volunteering.
00:13:23Like you said, I don't need to rush into work, but...
00:13:26This felt safe enough for right now.
00:13:28I think that's good.
00:13:29Especially with Christmas.
00:13:31A good time for friends.
00:13:32And family.
00:13:34I'm just saying.
00:13:36I'm fine on my own.
00:13:38Don't worry about me.
00:13:39Have it for my Army chaplain days.
00:13:41I'm not going to change either.
00:13:43Hmm.
00:14:01Hi, Caleb.
00:14:02It's Dad.
00:14:03Um, we decided not to go on our trip we planned over Christmas.
00:14:07Nothing's wrong.
00:14:08Just didn't work out.
00:14:11Anyway, we wanted to see if you want to come out.
00:14:13If you're not too busy.
00:14:15Just, you know, no pressure.
00:14:17But if you can, we'd love to have you.
00:14:20We missed you last year.
00:14:23We miss you.
00:14:26Okay, let us know.
00:14:47Are you sure it's this box, too?
00:14:48This thing has Easter stuff in here.
00:14:50Yep.
00:14:51Just dig a little.
00:14:52You could separate the decorations.
00:14:54I get lazy when I'm putting them away.
00:14:57Easter stuff goes with Valentine's and Halloween.
00:14:59But that box was hard to reach.
00:15:02Great effort.
00:15:03Got it.
00:15:06Ah!
00:15:07These ones!
00:15:10Hey, is your brother coming in to help still?
00:15:13Yeah, he said he was coaching tonight.
00:15:15But he promised he'd be by after the basketball game.
00:15:17Okay, good.
00:15:18Hey, when is your shelter adoption thing this year?
00:15:21December 23rd.
00:15:23Can I leave flyers here?
00:15:24Of course.
00:15:25Great.
00:15:26I'm just trying to come up with a catchy slogan, and then I'll print them out.
00:15:29Oh, how about save a dog, put a smile on your kid's face?
00:15:35It's a nice thought, but I'm not sure about that one.
00:15:39What about all those statistics about how many animals need homes?
00:15:43Guilting people into adopting, not the best strategy.
00:15:47I'm out of ideas, then.
00:15:49Hello.
00:15:51Hi.
00:15:52Okay.
00:15:53What do you need me to do?
00:15:55Too late for the heavy lifting.
00:15:57That tree was a beast to set up.
00:15:59You're incredibly strong for your size.
00:16:00I thought you could handle it.
00:16:02There should be a couple more boxes in the back if you could bring those out.
00:16:06Okay.
00:16:06Got it.
00:16:23There you go, Charles.
00:16:24Looking good.
00:16:28Someone's here?
00:16:30Oh, hi.
00:16:32Hi.
00:16:33You're early.
00:16:34I am?
00:16:35Well, actually, you said you were coming today, but I don't think we pinpointed a time, so...
00:16:41Oh, sorry.
00:16:43It's fine.
00:16:43I'm glad you're here.
00:16:45That's James over there.
00:16:47Nice to meet you.
00:16:48I'm Caleb.
00:16:49Hi.
00:16:49Welcome.
00:16:51So what can I do?
00:16:53Come on back.
00:16:54I'll show you around.
00:16:58Here's the holding area.
00:16:59We have another one down the hall.
00:17:01We aim to get the animals out of their pens as much as we can.
00:17:04Are you comfortable handling dogs, cats, rabbits?
00:17:07All the above.
00:17:09Nice and willing to try.
00:17:10Great.
00:17:11It is not all playing with animals, though, so prepare yourself.
00:17:14Sure.
00:17:15The less glamorous stuff you warned me about.
00:17:17I'm ready.
00:17:18Okay.
00:17:19The dog and cat food is over here.
00:17:22Oh, but if you ever notice we're running low on something, please speak up.
00:17:26That happens quicker than I realize.
00:17:30This is a kind of enrichment area so the animals can play, get wiggles out, and so forth.
00:17:34Nice.
00:17:36We have supplies in the cabinet to clean and whatnot, as well as some dog treats and toys.
00:17:40I can give you the normal chores we ask for help with, but is there anything you were thinking of
00:17:44doing specifically?
00:17:45Whatever you need.
00:17:47Any particular skills you have?
00:17:49Should I have brought a resume?
00:17:51No, I just don't know a lot about you.
00:17:53What do you like to do?
00:17:55Or why do you want to volunteer?
00:17:57Well, uh, after I was discharged from the Army, I worked in marketing at one company.
00:18:03Wee-wee, I've been doing handyman type stuff.
00:18:04Mostly just helping a friend, more so than work, but stuff like that.
00:18:07Cool.
00:18:08And, well, I wanted to volunteer because, well, this stuck with me.
00:18:13Last year when you and Leo came to visit.
00:18:15I'm glad it did.
00:18:17Where is Leo, by the way?
00:18:19At home.
00:18:20I don't bring him every day.
00:18:21He likes some quiet time.
00:18:24So, you mind mopping?
00:18:29Hi.
00:18:31How you doing?
00:18:34Good.
00:18:35Glad to hear it.
00:18:38Hello?
00:18:41Hey, bud.
00:18:43Rex.
00:18:45Suits you.
00:18:47Later, Rex.
00:18:50Sure, you can come meet the animals between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
00:18:54We prefer if you call ahead so we can be ready, but we also understand if that doesn't work for
00:18:57everyone.
00:19:00Yes, we have our Christmas adoption drive on December 23rd.
00:19:03You can adopt any time, though.
00:19:05Yeah, sure.
00:19:06Please do.
00:19:09Bye.
00:19:16Sorry.
00:19:17I know that's not exciting, but...
00:19:19If it helps, that's all that matters.
00:19:26Hey, you said you work with sales or something before?
00:19:29Yeah, marketing.
00:19:30Well, I've been working on this flyer to put out for the Christmas adoption drive.
00:19:33I'm trying to come up with a slogan or tagline.
00:19:36Something catchy.
00:19:38So far, I have bring home a new member of the family on the big posters.
00:19:43And I like that, but I kind of want something shorter.
00:19:48Like...
00:19:51Nothing.
00:19:52Hmm.
00:19:53How about a play on forever, but with the word fur?
00:19:57Like, well, try not to laugh, but a cute photo of a dog with forever years at Christmas written under
00:20:04it.
00:20:06I told you it was bad.
00:20:07No, no, no.
00:20:08I love it.
00:20:09What else?
00:20:10All right.
00:20:13Maybe...
00:20:15Give the gift that loves you back.
00:20:17No, that's...
00:20:18That's too long.
00:20:20Oh.
00:20:21This Christmas.
00:20:22Love and be loved.
00:20:25That's shorter.
00:20:26Not bad.
00:20:32Hey, maybe you could share stories about how people's lives have changed after they adopt.
00:20:37On the flyer?
00:20:38Probably not.
00:20:39It's too long.
00:20:40But, I don't know, success stories might make people smile and want that for themselves.
00:20:45Like you and Leo.
00:20:47And what you told me about when you adopted him.
00:20:50You remember that?
00:20:51Yeah, mostly.
00:20:53When people come here, I like to share the animal story.
00:20:55It helps people think about how a pet could fit into their lives.
00:20:59Now we just need to get people here.
00:21:01We're pretty much at capacity with the number of animals we're sheltering, and...
00:21:05That is never good.
00:21:06A lot of furry ones to take care of, huh?
00:21:08Yeah, it can be challenging.
00:21:10Especially trying to find the right home for each animal.
00:21:13And the costs are...
00:21:14Don't people have to pay something for whatever they adopt?
00:21:17Yeah, but it rarely covers the expense to shelter them.
00:21:21Really?
00:21:22So thank you.
00:21:24For being here.
00:21:33Hello.
00:21:34Hi, honey.
00:21:35How was your day?
00:21:37Fine, Dad.
00:21:38Thanks.
00:21:38Hey, Becca.
00:21:40Where's the straw for the manger?
00:21:42Got it.
00:21:43Here.
00:21:44Be careful not to make a mess.
00:21:46I'll try.
00:21:47So, Heidi, how's the diner doing?
00:21:49It's good.
00:21:50We had a huge group coming for lunch.
00:21:52Can't be busy past the usual rush.
00:21:54That's good.
00:21:55So how are things at the shelter?
00:21:56Good.
00:21:57Easier today.
00:21:58I have a new volunteer, and he did a lot of cleaning.
00:22:00So I could focus on other stuff.
00:22:02What's his name?
00:22:03Caleb.
00:22:04You know, it is so nice when the youth get involved in the community.
00:22:07Oh, he's not that young.
00:22:08He's not a student.
00:22:10That's James.
00:22:11Caleb is a veteran, but he's not that old, though.
00:22:14Wait, what?
00:22:15He was injured somehow and was discharged.
00:22:18So he's like your age?
00:22:19Yeah.
00:22:20Is he handsome?
00:22:21Mom.
00:22:21If she didn't ask, I was going to say the same thing.
00:22:24Me, too.
00:22:25You went out of your way to not describe him like you were avoiding keywords.
00:22:29Yeah.
00:22:30Keywords like my age and suitable date.
00:22:32Exactly.
00:22:33Shush, all of you.
00:22:35He's nice, but I don't know a lot about him yet.
00:22:44Okay.
00:22:45Come on, Caleb.
00:22:46Come on.
00:22:46Come on.
00:22:52Hey.
00:22:53Hey.
00:22:54Okay, Caleb.
00:22:55Let's show Caleb what we can do.
00:22:57Ready?
00:22:58Good girl.
00:23:00Nice.
00:23:01Yeah, she's pretty good with other dogs, so...
00:23:03I'm going to grab Thor and let them play a bit.
00:23:05Can you watch her?
00:23:06Sure.
00:23:08All right, Bella.
00:23:10Hey.
00:23:11Hey, you did so good on the course.
00:23:13Want to run it again?
00:23:14No?
00:23:17You're a heartbreaker, aren't you?
00:23:19You good with dogs?
00:23:21Oh.
00:23:22Thanks.
00:23:23Yeah, it wasn't my job to train them in the army or anything, but I like spending time with them.
00:23:28I'd help run them through the training course whenever I could.
00:23:30Kind of a bright spot in my day.
00:23:32They have that effect.
00:23:34Yeah.
00:23:35Oh.
00:23:36Sorry, I'll get back to cleaning the bowls.
00:23:38James just asked me to watch her for a moment.
00:23:39Oh, you're fine.
00:23:40I don't think you're slacking, if that's what you're worried about.
00:23:43Oh.
00:23:44Good.
00:23:46Would you want to help with exercising the dogs on the course here?
00:23:49Yeah?
00:23:51Sure, I'd like that.
00:23:55Oh.
00:23:56Something wrong?
00:23:59I didn't realize what time it was.
00:24:01I have a doctor's appointment, just a follow-up for my leg.
00:24:04Sorry, now I feel like I'm slacking.
00:24:08Not at all.
00:24:09I did manage to clean all the windows, I disinfected the pens for the cats, and I cleaned the rabbit
00:24:15cages.
00:24:16You got a lot done.
00:24:18No problem.
00:24:19I'll see you tomorrow.
00:24:20Thanks for coming.
00:24:21Bye, Bella.
00:24:22Come on.
00:24:27Okay, good night, everyone.
00:24:30Good night.
00:24:31Good night.
00:24:34Good night.
00:24:40Did we already go through it all?
00:24:52Already?
00:24:53I thought it would last longer.
00:25:02Good night.
00:25:14Good night.
00:25:18Good night.
00:25:19Good night.
00:25:20Good night.
00:25:21Good night.
00:25:22Good night.
00:25:23Good night.
00:25:24Good night.
00:25:24Good night.
00:25:25Good night.
00:25:26Good night.
00:25:27Good night.
00:25:27Good night.
00:25:28Good night.
00:25:58You holding on the floor here, Leo?
00:26:02Wow. Good job.
00:26:07Come on, Tank. Let's stretch our legs, okay?
00:26:10Hi.
00:26:11Hi, Caleb.
00:26:11Did you want me to watch things up front, or is Leo in charge?
00:26:14It's usually slow right now. Leo will let me know if someone comes.
00:26:17Wow. He's well-trained.
00:26:21This is Tank.
00:26:23Really? Did you make that up?
00:26:26Maybe.
00:26:27I like the irony.
00:26:28Hi, Tank. Yeah, you're so tough.
00:26:33Hi, Rex.
00:26:34I was actually going to get him out, too. Give me a hand?
00:26:37Sure.
00:26:40Okay, Rex. You ready to come out?
00:26:44Stay.
00:26:47Okay.
00:26:48Oh, hey, bud.
00:26:49He likes you.
00:26:50He does?
00:26:51Come on.
00:26:53All right. Come on, Rex. Follow me.
00:26:59That wasn't it.
00:27:01Come on.
00:27:04Do you need a treat to bribe him?
00:27:06Maybe.
00:27:10All right. Come back here, Rex.
00:27:12All right. Good. Stay. Sit.
00:27:14All right. Ready?
00:27:15And do what I do.
00:27:20Here you go.
00:27:22Is Rex's real name?
00:27:23He arrived with it, so I assume so.
00:27:26Hmm. Well, dog trainer, I am not.
00:27:28He responds to you.
00:27:29Did you see what just happened?
00:27:31Okay, maybe he doesn't obey you, but he's intrigued by you.
00:27:35I'm not sure it's mutual.
00:27:36He just loves to be active.
00:27:38He's been here longer than any of the others, so this is a really nice outlet for him.
00:27:43I try to take him home as much as I can, but Leo doesn't like it.
00:27:47Territorial?
00:27:48Well, Rex hoards all the dog toys, so it annoys Leo.
00:27:51That sounds like Rex.
00:27:54Would you want to take him home for a night?
00:27:58Me.
00:27:59You're good with him.
00:28:01Have you had your own dog before?
00:28:03Uh, when I was a kid, yeah.
00:28:05So you know what to do.
00:28:06Hi.
00:28:07Well, I...
00:28:09You don't have to if you don't want to, but think about it.
00:28:13Uh, James should be here soon.
00:28:15Are you hungry?
00:28:16Yeah.
00:28:17Let's get some lunch.
00:28:21This is my friend's place.
00:28:23I'll apologize in advance for anything she says.
00:28:25Okay.
00:28:26Amber!
00:28:27Hey!
00:28:28Uh, welcome.
00:28:29I'm Heidi.
00:28:30Caleb.
00:28:31Oh, volunteer.
00:28:34We have to eat quick, so...
00:28:36Sure, just look over the menu and let me know what you want.
00:28:41I'll give you guys a minute.
00:28:43I should have thought this through.
00:28:46Is everything okay?
00:28:47Yeah.
00:28:48The sandwiches are great here.
00:28:50Get whatever you like, my treat.
00:28:51Oh, no, you don't have to do that.
00:28:52I can...
00:28:52You're working for free.
00:28:53The least I can do is buy lunch.
00:28:56Well, thank you then.
00:28:58So, how'd you come to own the shelter?
00:29:01I started out like you.
00:29:02Volunteering.
00:29:04Wanted to have something to do as a teen after school.
00:29:06The founder of the shelter was a neighbor of mine, Kathy.
00:29:10She was always kind.
00:29:12And she had the biggest heart, you know.
00:29:14She never minded that I came by.
00:29:16And pretty soon, she asked me to work there for real.
00:29:20So, you've been working there since high school?
00:29:22No, I was away for a few years for college, but I came back one summer, and by then Kathy's
00:29:27health wasn't so good, and the shelter needed a lot of attention.
00:29:31She didn't want to see it close, and she always said that she felt like it was what God wanted
00:29:35her to do.
00:29:37But since she couldn't do it all, maybe I was meant to take over.
00:29:40She asked me to run it.
00:29:42It's a lot of pressure.
00:29:43Yeah, I felt like that sometimes.
00:29:46She passed away a couple years ago, and left it to me to keep it going.
00:29:51And I haven't looked back.
00:29:55So, you've never wanted to do something else?
00:29:59I studied art for a bit.
00:30:00Oh, that's right.
00:30:02You like to paint.
00:30:03I told you that?
00:30:05Last year.
00:30:06You and your memory.
00:30:08But yes, I do like painting and pottery and things like that.
00:30:12But I felt like this was more important.
00:30:14You know, it's not like I planned it or thought it would become such a big part of my life,
00:30:18but then I started to see what Kathy meant.
00:30:22Sometimes God leads you to where you need to be, even if it's not where you expect it
00:30:25to end up.
00:30:27Well, I suppose you're lucky.
00:30:29It's not easy to know what to do with your life.
00:30:31Is that why you joined the Army?
00:30:34At first, maybe.
00:30:36I wasn't so sure it seemed like a good solution, but then I really took to it.
00:30:40Can I ask what happened?
00:30:42Training accident.
00:30:45I got rolled in a vehicle that turned too hard during a training exercise.
00:30:48Wow.
00:30:49Yeah.
00:30:50Of all things, right?
00:30:52Nine years, and that's what takes me out of it.
00:30:54I'm sorry.
00:30:56Like I said, it was an accident.
00:30:58Back to square one.
00:31:00Starting over.
00:31:01It's a process.
00:31:03Well, I'm glad it brought you to the shelter.
00:31:05Me too.
00:31:06It's been nice.
00:31:08Sometimes loud, but nice.
00:31:11Yes, that is just one of the stresses.
00:31:14What are the others?
00:31:16Worrying about the animals.
00:31:17If I can find enough homes for them.
00:31:20Having enough resources to take in every animal and keep them sheltered and happy.
00:31:26Some days I worry about not having enough food for them.
00:31:30It's a lot on your shoulders.
00:31:32Some days are easier than others.
00:31:36I don't think my parents saw the shelter as a career at first.
00:31:39At least not the one that they imagined for me.
00:31:42But they see how much I love the animals, and they understand why I need to do it.
00:31:47They always support me now.
00:31:49That's nice.
00:31:50Having their support.
00:31:52How about you?
00:31:53Tell me about your family.
00:31:56My parents, they live in Kansas.
00:32:00Any siblings?
00:32:02Nope.
00:32:04Are you going there for Christmas then?
00:32:06No, I'll stay here.
00:32:09Are your parents coming to visit you?
00:32:12No.
00:32:14Well, that must be hard.
00:32:16I can't imagine Christmas without my family around.
00:32:18You get used to it.
00:32:21Because of being in the army?
00:32:23I don't know.
00:32:25It'd make me want to see them even more when I could.
00:32:28We're, uh, not that close, are you, we?
00:32:32Oh.
00:32:33Sorry.
00:32:35So, yeah, if you need any help over the holidays, it won't interrupt anything.
00:32:39I couldn't ask that of you.
00:32:41I'm offering.
00:32:42Well, thanks.
00:32:44I'll remember that.
00:32:49How was the shelter today?
00:32:51Good.
00:32:52There are a lot of dogs there, you know.
00:32:55Something for you?
00:32:56Oh, no.
00:32:57No, no.
00:32:58Fine, fine.
00:32:59You're really liking it there, aren't you?
00:33:01So far, yeah.
00:33:03It's different.
00:33:05More fur?
00:33:06Yeah, there's that too.
00:33:09But no, there's good people.
00:33:11It's a nice change.
00:33:13I'm glad.
00:33:14Since you've been volunteering, you've been different.
00:33:18More energetic.
00:33:19You think so?
00:33:20Yeah.
00:33:22I'm glad you've found something that you're passionate about.
00:33:25I don't know if the shelter is necessarily a passion, but honestly, it is nice to keep
00:33:30me busy.
00:33:31Yeah, it's more than keeping you busy.
00:33:33You have to be satisfied, too.
00:33:36You remember Jessica Andre?
00:33:39Yeah, of course.
00:33:40From Lieutenant Squires platoon.
00:33:42Yeah, she's back.
00:33:43Rotated out.
00:33:44I hear she's not doing very well.
00:33:46Oh.
00:33:47Yeah.
00:33:48She hasn't found her footing.
00:33:50Purpose.
00:33:51You know, it's important.
00:33:53Maybe you, with this shelter thing, maybe you found your purpose.
00:33:57And if so, I'm thrilled.
00:33:59We'll see.
00:34:01It's easy for me.
00:34:02I don't have all the responsibility like Amber does.
00:34:07Hey, you remember Mac, who trained dogs in the military?
00:34:11Yeah.
00:34:12Do you know how to get a hold of him?
00:34:13I think I have his number in here.
00:34:15Why?
00:34:16You gonna get him to adopt some dogs, too?
00:34:19No.
00:34:19I'm wondering if he has any idea on how to get dog food at a better price.
00:34:23Or donated.
00:34:25Dog food?
00:34:26Sounds like things are tight at the shelter.
00:34:28Ah, here it is.
00:34:29Sending it to you now.
00:34:32Thanks.
00:34:33You're really getting into this, aren't you?
00:34:35I'm just trying to help.
00:34:37Here.
00:34:43Hey, Mac.
00:34:44It's Caleb Hale.
00:34:48Come on, Leo.
00:34:50Let's get ready to go.
00:34:57Hi.
00:34:58Hi.
00:35:00Is Rex still needing a break?
00:35:03Yeah.
00:35:06Whoa.
00:35:08Okay.
00:35:13Wait, no.
00:35:13Don't go up there.
00:35:19What was I thinking?
00:35:21Come on, Rex.
00:35:22Back to the kitchen.
00:35:25There you go.
00:35:28Stay there, all right?
00:35:31Good night.
00:35:42I was surprised you took him to lunch.
00:35:44I was being nice.
00:35:46Do you have a picture?
00:35:48No.
00:35:48Why would I?
00:35:49I do.
00:35:50I took one when they weren't looking.
00:35:52Heidi!
00:35:54Nice, right?
00:35:56Back to work.
00:35:57I need to start getting these flyers out to businesses and stores.
00:36:01Becca, you're not even helping.
00:36:02Right.
00:36:04I thought he was nice.
00:36:06You said three sentences to him, if that.
00:36:09Only because you chased me away.
00:36:11I want to meet him.
00:36:13No.
00:36:14Why not?
00:36:14Just go to the shelter and meet him.
00:36:16Good idea.
00:36:16No, no, no.
00:36:17You go there to pick out a pet, not a guy.
00:36:20It was nice of him to take Rex home.
00:36:22Yeah.
00:36:23I wonder how he's doing with that.
00:36:25He sounds lonely.
00:36:27Well, Rex has been at the shelter for...
00:36:28I mean Caleb.
00:36:30Oh.
00:36:31You should invite him over for Christmas.
00:36:33No.
00:36:34At least for dinner.
00:36:35No.
00:36:36I'll tell Mom.
00:36:37She'd say it's the Christian thing to do.
00:36:39Yeah.
00:36:39No one should be alone on Christmas.
00:36:42You don't think that sends the wrong message or seems inappropriate?
00:36:44Funny you should say that.
00:36:46Unless you're worried because you do find him interesting and attractive.
00:36:49Hmm.
00:36:50Excellent point.
00:36:52That's it.
00:36:53No hot chocolate for you.
00:36:54Oh, no.
00:37:11Rex.
00:37:12What are you doing up here?
00:37:19I have a reporter friend.
00:37:21She said she'll write up something for their website about the adoption drive.
00:37:24That'd be great.
00:37:25I also have these flyers and I've been taking them to businesses and stores.
00:37:29Do you know anyone I could take some to?
00:37:30Um, yeah.
00:37:32Let me take some.
00:37:33Thanks.
00:37:34And just let me know if your reporter friend needs any information.
00:37:37I am happy to talk with her.
00:37:38Great.
00:37:39Um, one of my clients is a therapist.
00:37:42She was asking about maybe partnering somehow so her clients can interact with the animals.
00:37:47Could I take you to meet her?
00:37:49Maybe a lunch date?
00:37:51Yeah.
00:37:52I'd love to meet her.
00:37:53I'll set it up.
00:37:54Uh, maybe after Christmas.
00:37:55Sure.
00:37:57See you later.
00:37:59Thanks again.
00:38:02How was Rex?
00:38:03Did he behave?
00:38:04Uh, I took him for a walk last night.
00:38:06We went a few miles, but he could have gone a few more.
00:38:08Then my legs started acting up.
00:38:10Thank you for giving him a break.
00:38:12Yeah.
00:38:14You want to take him tonight, too?
00:38:16Uh, no, it's okay.
00:38:19Uh, do you have any more flyers, though?
00:38:21I can see about handing some out later when I head out for errands.
00:38:24That'd be great.
00:38:26Oh, um, we are out of dog food, cat food, and pellets for the rabbits and guinea pigs.
00:38:31Would you mind going with James to stock up?
00:38:33It gets to be a lot of heavy lifting.
00:38:35Yeah, sure.
00:38:36Will that hurt your leg?
00:38:38No, no, it'll be fine.
00:38:40Okay.
00:38:41Hey, James.
00:38:43The stuff we get should be just over here.
00:38:46How many bags do we need?
00:38:47Eight for the adult kibble, two of the puppy, and one bag of senior kibble.
00:38:52We'll get this, and then we'll get the cat food.
00:38:54Got it.
00:38:55So, do you know who came by earlier?
00:38:58Uh, the guy talking with Amber?
00:39:00That was Ryan.
00:39:00He's a donor.
00:39:02Helps keep us afloat.
00:39:03I know Amber really appreciates him.
00:39:06Oh.
00:39:07I'm pretty sure he likes her, too, but she's kind of oblivious about that.
00:39:13Yeah, I got that vibe from him.
00:39:15Uh, she doesn't know?
00:39:17I don't think he's saying anything directly.
00:39:20Do you think she'd be interested?
00:39:23I don't know.
00:39:25Why?
00:39:26Just wondering.
00:39:28Right.
00:39:42Hey, Rex.
00:39:44How's it going, bud?
00:39:46Hey.
00:39:47You doing all right?
00:39:49Yeah, I gotta get back to work, but I'll take you through the obstacle course later, okay?
00:39:54All right?
00:39:55It's a date.
00:39:56Yeah.
00:40:05Hey, James.
00:40:06I forgot to ask you to get more chew toys for the dogs.
00:40:09Oh.
00:40:11I...
00:40:11I could go back.
00:40:13No, it's okay.
00:40:14Thanks.
00:40:15Hey, for visiting the Veterans Clinic tomorrow, I was thinking I might take Caleb.
00:40:20Makes sense.
00:40:21So you okay with that?
00:40:22Yeah.
00:40:23I mean, I can look after things here.
00:40:26I think it'd be good for him.
00:40:29That's...
00:40:29very thoughtful.
00:40:31Think so?
00:40:31Sure.
00:40:32I think he'll appreciate it, too.
00:40:35Okay.
00:40:35Good.
00:40:37Not that it matters.
00:40:38He's fine with whatever tasks, right?
00:40:40Yeah.
00:40:41Good.
00:40:49You know what to do?
00:40:50My pixie did the talking.
00:40:52You'll see she has more effect than anything you say.
00:40:54I don't know about that.
00:40:56You made a difference to me.
00:40:58I did?
00:40:59Yeah.
00:41:01All right, all right, I'm coming.
00:41:03This is Leo.
00:41:05Z a poodle.
00:41:06He is a poodle.
00:41:07Full red poodle.
00:41:08Wow.
00:41:08Every weather season's shining through.
00:41:14But all this red and green just leaves me feeling blue.
00:41:20The only wish list that I've made begins and ends with your name.
00:41:32Come on and marry me up.
00:41:34Don't let me down.
00:41:36Spin me around.
00:41:37Won't be so fake in the ground.
00:41:39I need you to break up the cheer.
00:41:42Bring your holly-jolly self right over here.
00:41:45My Christmas spirit sure could use your touch.
00:41:51So wrap me in your warm December love.
00:41:57Hey.
00:42:00For what?
00:42:01For letting me come along.
00:42:03How many times am I going to need to remind you that I am the grateful one, Mr. Volunteer?
00:42:08Well, still, that was special.
00:42:11It's a different perspective, not being the injured one.
00:42:14It looked like you were able to connect with him in a way that I can't, given your military service.
00:42:19Maybe, but that doesn't mean you coming is any less powerful.
00:42:25You do that every Christmas?
00:42:26I try to go every month or two, but Christmas is especially important.
00:42:31Wow, that's really impressive.
00:42:33It's good.
00:42:34Having more human interaction.
00:42:36For the dogs?
00:42:37I meant for me, but it's good for them too.
00:42:44Can I ask you something?
00:42:45Of course.
00:42:47Is your military service an issue with your family?
00:42:51I'm sorry, that is none of my business.
00:42:53No, it's okay, I just, I'm not that great at talking about it.
00:42:57But no, they didn't mind.
00:42:59They just worried.
00:43:01Who wouldn't worry in their shoes?
00:43:03Yeah, but they were supportive, so.
00:43:07Oh.
00:43:08You're wondering what happened.
00:43:11I'm sorry, I'm being nosy.
00:43:13It's okay.
00:43:17After the accident, I was, uh, well, let's just say I wasn't that easy to be around.
00:43:23I was afraid I wasn't going to recover, and, well, I didn't know what I was going to do next.
00:43:28My parents, they, they kept trying to make everything better.
00:43:32Like, this relentless optimism.
00:43:35Always saying things like, you know, it's all part of God's plan.
00:43:39There's better things ahead.
00:43:41You just have to have faith.
00:43:45You know, I was raised to believe in God, but it got harder and harder to keep hearing them say
00:43:50it over and over.
00:43:52How could something so terrible be part of His plan, you know?
00:43:59Anyway, we had an argument.
00:44:01A big one.
00:44:03And, and I'll admit it was more my fault than them, but, but I pushed them away.
00:44:13There you have it.
00:44:16I'm sorry.
00:44:18You know, I haven't told anyone that except for Eli.
00:44:22Pastor Eli?
00:44:23Yeah, we served together.
00:44:26Not in the same capacity, of course, but he was the army chaplain, and we stayed friends.
00:44:33I didn't realize that.
00:44:39Thank you for telling me.
00:44:44Yeah.
00:44:50Come in.
00:44:52Hey.
00:44:53Hi.
00:44:53What's up?
00:44:54Came as soon as I could.
00:44:57Ooh, those look yummy.
00:44:58Help yourself.
00:45:00I'm trying to figure out how to cut costs at the shelter.
00:45:03I thought you already cut what you could.
00:45:06Well, not enough.
00:45:07It sounds like you need to bring more money in.
00:45:09Can you raise prices to adopt?
00:45:12No, because it has the opposite effect.
00:45:14Less people adopt, and then I have more animals to care for.
00:45:17That makes sense.
00:45:17I even got an unexpected donation, but utilities, dog food, rent, it's already gone.
00:45:23I'm using my own money to float the shelter.
00:45:26Can't keep this up.
00:45:28So, any ideas?
00:45:31At your basketball games, there are always banners from sponsors.
00:45:34How does that work?
00:45:36They pay to have their logo and information shown as sponsors for the event or school team,
00:45:42but we usually have banks and orthodontists sponsoring.
00:45:45I'm not sure they'll fit for the shelter.
00:45:48I was thinking vets.
00:45:50That's a good idea.
00:45:52Every pet you find a home for is a potential new patient for a veterinarian.
00:45:57Exactly what I was thinking.
00:45:59What do I do?
00:46:00Call up and say, hey, can I print your name in exchange for money?
00:46:02I think you'll need to sell it a little more than that.
00:46:05Think about how you got other donations for the shelter.
00:46:08Most came from when Kathy ran it, and a lot of those have already tapered off over time.
00:46:13What about that Ryan guy?
00:46:14He's the one who gave a little extra recently.
00:46:17I can't ask for more.
00:46:19Well, I'll write some talking points for a sponsor then.
00:46:22And I'll start compiling a list of VA offices to call.
00:46:25Okay.
00:46:27Hey.
00:46:31Mac.
00:46:32Hey, any luck?
00:46:35Really?
00:46:36Oh, thank you so much, man.
00:46:40Yeah, yeah, hold on.
00:46:46Okay, go ahead.
00:46:49Yeah, perfect.
00:46:51Yeah, I'll reach out to them about how to pick it up.
00:46:54Hey, thank you again.
00:46:55This means so much.
00:46:57I mean it.
00:46:59Okay.
00:47:01Yeah, take care.
00:47:02Hey, Merry Christmas.
00:47:05All right.
00:47:07Cheers.
00:47:11Okay, thank you.
00:47:12Bye.
00:47:15Hey.
00:47:16Caleb, I thought you weren't coming in today.
00:47:18Yeah, I wasn't, but I have some news.
00:47:21So, I reached out to an old army buddy of mine who used to train dogs in the military,
00:47:24and long story short, I told him about the shelter and asked if he had suggestions about
00:47:28getting dog food at a better price.
00:47:30You did all that?
00:47:31Yeah.
00:47:32And, well, he called and passed along what we need, and, well, guess what?
00:47:35This one company is willing to pledge a year's donation of food for all of our cats and dogs.
00:47:40Are you serious?
00:47:42Caleb, that's...
00:47:44Yeah, it wasn't me.
00:47:45It was Mac and his company.
00:47:47I can't believe you did all this.
00:47:49Seriously, you went after it, though.
00:47:50Well, you have enough to worry about.
00:47:52Not nearly as much now.
00:47:58Really, thank you.
00:48:00Yeah, of course.
00:48:04So, what are you working on?
00:48:07I'm trying to find a veterinarian to sponsor the adoption drive.
00:48:10Nothing yet, but I'm not even halfway through the list.
00:48:13Do you need any help?
00:48:15Uh, I might be done with these calls before tomorrow, but if not, that'd be great.
00:48:20Sounds good.
00:48:21I'll see you tomorrow.
00:48:23Thank you again.
00:48:43Sounds great.
00:48:45We'll see you tomorrow.
00:48:46Bye-bye.
00:48:48Hi.
00:48:48Can I help you?
00:48:49Yeah, I have kind of an unusual question.
00:48:58There you go.
00:48:59It takes some time to get to know him.
00:49:01Let's get him.
00:49:10Hello, Davenport Animal Haven.
00:49:12Hi, I'm calling for Amber.
00:49:14This is she.
00:49:15I'm with First Line Animal Hospital, and we have six hospitals throughout the county.
00:49:19I just wanted to find out more about sponsoring your Christmas adoption drive.
00:49:22Oh, great.
00:49:24Wait, how did you hear about being a sponsor?
00:49:27A man came by.
00:49:29Let's see, what was his name?
00:49:30I wrote it down somewhere.
00:49:32Oh, here it is.
00:49:33Caleb Hale.
00:49:35Uh, great.
00:49:37Any questions I can answer about the sponsorship?
00:49:43Hi.
00:49:44Hi.
00:49:44Looking for something?
00:49:46Uh, Pim.
00:49:49Hey, what's going on?
00:49:51The Animal Hospital?
00:49:52Did they call?
00:49:53Yes.
00:49:54Oh, good.
00:49:55I wasn't sure if I was doubling up.
00:49:57You might have called already, but I was driving by and thought, why not?
00:50:00They signed on to sponsor the Christmas adoption drive.
00:50:03That's great.
00:50:04You have no idea.
00:50:06Look, are you doing anything tonight?
00:50:10No.
00:50:11Why?
00:50:11My mom always has a Christmas pie night in December.
00:50:14I want you to come.
00:50:16We'll make it a celebration.
00:50:17Okay.
00:50:18Yeah, sure.
00:50:19Sounds fun.
00:50:21I hope this crust turned out all right.
00:50:23I can tell you right now if it did.
00:50:25Oh, no, you don't.
00:50:26Ooh.
00:50:28Hello.
00:50:29Hi, everyone.
00:50:30Oh, hi.
00:50:32I'm Becca.
00:50:33Evan.
00:50:34Nice to meet you.
00:50:35Hi, Heidi.
00:50:36Good to see you again.
00:50:37And this is Caleb.
00:50:38Caleb, this is my mom and my dad.
00:50:41Pleasure.
00:50:41Oh, I'm so glad that you could join us.
00:50:44Amber told us all about those miracles that you worked for the shelter, so you get the first slice.
00:50:49Now, on Christmas pie night, we do have a little bit of everything, but we like to start with the
00:50:53proper dinner, so we have shepherd's pie first.
00:50:56Sounds delicious.
00:50:58Okay.
00:50:59Well, Margaret, why don't you say the blessing of the food?
00:51:01Happy to.
00:51:03Our gracious Father in Heaven, we are grateful for this fine meal and the traditions that bring us together to
00:51:11celebrate your son's birth at this special time of year.
00:51:13We are so pleased that Caleb could join us, help him to feel at home here with us.
00:51:20Please bless this food, as we know that it is from your hand, and we are thankful for all of
00:51:25the blessings that you give us.
00:51:26In Jesus' name, amen.
00:51:28Amen.
00:51:29We'll dig in, everybody.
00:51:30There's plenty more, but save some room for the dessert pies.
00:51:34Thanks, Mom.
00:51:35So, Caleb, when you're not single-handedly saving the day at the shelter, what do you do?
00:51:41I think Amber gives me too much credit. I help out an old army buddy at the church.
00:51:46Oh, how long did you serve for?
00:51:48Nine years, sir.
00:51:49Call me David.
00:51:50Amber mentioned that you had been injured. How are you feeling now, Mom?
00:51:54Pretty much good as new.
00:51:55Good. Your poor parents must have been beside themselves.
00:51:58This is good pie, Mom.
00:52:00Thanks, Eddie.
00:52:01So, tell us about yourself. Amber only tells me so much.
00:52:04Oh, we should do that 20 questions thing. You know, like what you guys do when I bring home a
00:52:09date to meet the family?
00:52:10Great idea. What do you think?
00:52:12Uh, sure. Why not?
00:52:14Brace yourself, Caleb. He's our guest. Maybe let's...
00:52:17What's your favorite meal?
00:52:18Uh, steak, I guess.
00:52:20First car? An old Bronco.
00:52:22Do you have a girlfriend?
00:52:23No.
00:52:24What's your favorite pie?
00:52:26Pecan.
00:52:27Perfect, because I made some for later.
00:52:29What kind of books do you read?
00:52:32Thanks for helping me with these.
00:52:34I want to start selling them at the diner.
00:52:36I'd buy one.
00:52:37These are so cute. They make great neighbor gifts, too.
00:52:40Can I have one?
00:52:42Of course.
00:52:44Caleb, you want a hot chocolate pop?
00:52:46Sounds great. Thanks.
00:52:47Well, come on over here.
00:52:51All right, how's this work?
00:52:52Never had a hot chocolate pop before?
00:52:54Uh, no.
00:52:56Come on, you'll love it. Pick one.
00:53:00Like that?
00:53:01Yep.
00:53:02And then we just add some milk.
00:53:09Hey, that's pretty neat.
00:53:11It tastes good, too.
00:53:13Oh, thank you.
00:53:13Mm-hmm.
00:53:21Oh, wow.
00:53:22That's good.
00:53:23I know, right?
00:53:25Hey, what if you sold these at the adoption drive?
00:53:28What do these have to do with pet adoptions?
00:53:29Oh, it fits more under Christmas, but...
00:53:32I don't know, it could be an impulse buy.
00:53:33Something festive.
00:53:34I'm just thinking out loud.
00:53:36You don't have to do it.
00:53:37No, I like that idea.
00:53:39Yeah, I'd buy them.
00:53:41Can I pay you to make some for me to sell?
00:53:43Yeah, of course.
00:53:46Something wrong?
00:53:47No, I'm just thinking.
00:53:49Hot chocolate pops work for Christmas,
00:53:51but you could also sell collars and leashes.
00:53:54Aw, cute.
00:53:55Or you could invite in existing pet owners
00:53:57to decorate a collar for their dog.
00:54:00Or...
00:54:01Decorate a leash.
00:54:02Or even photos with Santa Claus.
00:54:04Santa Paws.
00:54:06Starting to sound less like an adoption drive, though.
00:54:09But that's good.
00:54:11Instead of just another adoption drive,
00:54:13it could be like...
00:54:15like a Christmas pet fair.
00:54:17So I can tell my neighbors about it
00:54:19without them feeling like I'm pressuring them to adopt?
00:54:21Exactly.
00:54:22But just people being there
00:54:24will help spread the word and get people thinking.
00:54:26Sounds like we've got a lot of work to do.
00:54:30I need to update all the flyers
00:54:32and tell the reporter that Ryan arranged what we're doing.
00:54:35How did you get to be so creative?
00:54:37I don't think I've ever been called creative.
00:54:39Well, you are.
00:54:42Seriously.
00:54:43You don't know how huge all this is.
00:54:45A few days ago, the shelter was broke.
00:54:48I was trying to figure out how to keep it all going
00:54:50and not give more than I could afford myself.
00:54:53I didn't know what to do.
00:54:55Especially if I had to turn away an animal in need.
00:54:57I'm glad it didn't come to that.
00:54:58But then you went above and beyond.
00:55:01Like, way beyond.
00:55:03And for the first time,
00:55:04I am eager to get to work
00:55:06without the fear that I'll fail.
00:55:08Knowing that I can focus on the animals
00:55:10with less pressure about the money side is...
00:55:14I could tell that you were worried and sad
00:55:16and I didn't want that.
00:55:18Thanks for bringing me along tonight.
00:55:21It's been a while since I've been around a family.
00:55:25They like meeting you, too.
00:55:27I'm sorry for their non-stop questions.
00:55:53Okay, we are going to make this
00:55:54the best Christmas adoption drive yet.
00:55:56We're holding it here, right?
00:55:57Yes, and pray for good weather
00:55:59because we're going to have to do crafts
00:56:00and things outside.
00:56:02But I think it'll work.
00:56:04Now, Heidi is making the hot chocolate pops.
00:56:07I think we put her in charge of selling that...
00:56:10over here.
00:56:12And then we'll have somebody run
00:56:14decorating the collars and leashes.
00:56:16Do you want me on that?
00:56:18I'll get my family to help out.
00:56:20I'd rather the three of us handle the adoptions, though.
00:56:22We can do that.
00:56:23However, I do like the Santa photo idea,
00:56:26especially for people who just adopted a pet.
00:56:28I'm thinking we put up a backdrop for that...
00:56:31about here.
00:56:34Sound good?
00:56:35Yeah.
00:56:36Yep.
00:56:36Okay.
00:56:37Now, this is a lot to handle
00:56:38on top of everything we do each day.
00:56:40I can focus on it if you want.
00:56:43It's too much, man.
00:56:44I think I can figure most of it out.
00:56:46You two were handling all the normal things
00:56:48before I came anyways.
00:56:49Okay.
00:56:50I'll go ahead and adjust the new flyers,
00:56:52but do pass along anything that's too big.
00:56:55All right.
00:56:56And is there a volume discount at all?
00:56:59Uh-huh.
00:57:02Okay.
00:57:04And all that's in stock right now?
00:57:06Cool.
00:57:09Yeah, okay.
00:57:11All right.
00:57:11Well, thank you very much.
00:57:13Yeah.
00:57:14Goodbye.
00:57:14Bye.
00:57:15Sorry.
00:57:16It's fine.
00:57:17How you doing there, Rexy?
00:57:18Still eating all your kibble?
00:57:20Yeah, he's doing all right.
00:57:22Hey, what's his story?
00:57:24You said every animal has one.
00:57:26Yeah.
00:57:28He's someone I don't know much about.
00:57:31When I first brought him here,
00:57:32I was expecting someone might show up to claim him
00:57:34because he's so sweet
00:57:35and he gets along with other dogs well.
00:57:38Now I just keep waiting for someone to adopt him.
00:57:41I'm not sure why no one has.
00:57:44One day, someone will see him for who he is.
00:57:47I wish everyone could see animals the way you do.
00:57:51What if they could?
00:57:53I could type up all the animal stories for the adoption drive.
00:57:57And maybe display it next to their kennels.
00:57:59Yeah.
00:58:00That way, if I can't tell them myself,
00:58:02they can still learn about the animal they're looking at.
00:58:04Yeah.
00:58:05I like it.
00:58:07It's nice brainstorming with you.
00:58:10I just hope it helps enough.
00:58:12I want this to go really well.
00:58:15For you.
00:58:17Thanks.
00:58:20Hey, would you, uh,
00:58:22would you want to do something tonight?
00:58:24After the shelter closes?
00:58:26Yeah.
00:58:27I'd like that.
00:58:32What's this?
00:58:33You like painting and pottery.
00:58:35I thought this kind of combined both of those.
00:58:38Are you serious?
00:58:40I know the shelter is so important to you,
00:58:42but I thought you kind of might need a break.
00:58:44I want to reminisce.
00:58:46This is so great.
00:58:49It's been a long time since I've done anything artistic.
00:58:52Well then,
00:58:53shall we get started?
00:58:54Mm-hmm.
00:58:57If I paint mine camouflage,
00:58:58will you judge me?
00:59:00Not at all.
00:59:01So what are you painting?
00:59:03I'm thinking a dog in a Santa hat.
00:59:05Napping by a Christmas tree.
00:59:07I will save that for canvas.
00:59:09Well, either way,
00:59:10I think you'll put me to shame.
00:59:11Okay, do not put me on a pedestal yet.
00:59:13Who knows how the dog will turn out?
00:59:16So if you hadn't gotten involved with the shelter,
00:59:19would you have pursued art?
00:59:22I don't know.
00:59:23It's kind of hard to imagine now.
00:59:25But do you regret not giving art more of a chance?
00:59:28I don't think so.
00:59:29I like the variety of things I do at the shelter.
00:59:32I'm fine with art being my hobby.
00:59:35What about you?
00:59:36If I hadn't joined the army?
00:59:38Yeah.
00:59:39I don't know of anything specifically,
00:59:40but it's more so a feel of what I like to do.
00:59:44Which is?
00:59:46Being useful?
00:59:48I don't know.
00:59:49I say that,
00:59:49but there's a lot of ways you can be useful.
00:59:52Maybe it's the variety that helps.
00:59:54Did you have that in the army?
00:59:56Yeah.
00:59:56Yeah.
00:59:57A lot more than you'd think.
00:59:58Well,
00:59:59I guess you are trained for whatever could go wrong.
01:00:01To a degree, yes,
01:00:03but there's a lot of times that you just had to improvise.
01:00:06You know, find a solution.
01:00:08I think I like that, too.
01:00:11That's why you're so amazing.
01:00:13What?
01:00:14All of your good ideas and problem solving.
01:00:16I'm willing to bet, though,
01:00:18you've always had that talent.
01:00:20Who knows?
01:00:22Well,
01:00:23I am just lucky that you stopped by the shelter
01:00:25and have put up with the noise and craziness.
01:00:28It's been exactly what I was missing.
01:00:31Seriously.
01:00:32And not just the work.
01:00:33It's the little smiles on all the dogs' faces,
01:00:36like Rex.
01:00:37The fun little personalities of all the cats.
01:00:39And James and...
01:00:41Well, especially...
01:00:43You.
01:00:47Is that okay?
01:00:49Of course.
01:00:52Good.
01:00:56There's this focus he has.
01:00:58Like an intensity that is so impressive.
01:01:01Everything he does,
01:01:03he does 110%.
01:01:04That's rare.
01:01:06And it's sweet, too.
01:01:08It makes me want him to have some joy from all this.
01:01:10What makes you think he doesn't?
01:01:12He seems happy,
01:01:13except for...
01:01:15Well, he's alone.
01:01:16Alone or lonely?
01:01:18Both.
01:01:20He's going to be alone this Christmas.
01:01:21Well, you should invite him to spend it with us.
01:01:24That's what I was thinking.
01:01:25But?
01:01:26It helped,
01:01:27but it wouldn't fix what needs fixing.
01:01:30He shared some things with me the other day, and...
01:01:33And?
01:01:33You want to make it all better.
01:01:35Just like those dogs and cats at the shelter.
01:01:37Yeah, but...
01:01:38It's more than that.
01:01:40He deserves to be happy.
01:01:41Truly happy with nothing held back.
01:01:44But I know he can't get there
01:01:45without making some changes with his family.
01:01:48Well, why does it matter to you so much?
01:01:51Because
01:01:52it hurts when I catch glimpses of him when he's sad.
01:01:56And you care for him.
01:01:59He'll find his way.
01:02:00One day at a time.
01:02:02Not if he does it alone.
01:02:04Well, who said that we were going to leave him alone?
01:02:11What is in these, anyway?
01:02:13Nothing.
01:02:14They're just to decorate for the adoption drive tomorrow.
01:02:16What?
01:02:16Well, here.
01:02:17I was so curious.
01:02:29Okay, ready?
01:02:30One, two, three.
01:02:56Let me know if you need any help.
01:02:57Hey, boy.
01:02:58You want to come home with me today?
01:03:00I have to admit, I'm pretty grumpy in the morning, so, okay.
01:03:07That's the nice thing about them, huh?
01:03:10What's that?
01:03:11Dogs.
01:03:12They'll accept you as you are.
01:03:14They're holding your flaws against you.
01:03:16Yeah.
01:03:17If only we could all be that way, huh?
01:03:22What about that guy over there?
01:03:25Yeah, so, that's actually Rex.
01:03:27He has been at the shelter the longest, and, uh, we don't have a ton of information on him,
01:03:31but he is the sweetest dog.
01:03:33He loves to play fetch.
01:03:34He gets along with other dogs.
01:03:36Great.
01:03:36Yeah, I can see how people would really like that food.
01:03:38Yes.
01:03:40Here.
01:03:41I'm here with that.
01:03:43Thanks.
01:03:47Ah, this is the biggest turnout I have seen at Christmastime.
01:03:52Amber has you to thank for this.
01:03:53No, we've all pitched in, but Amber, she does so much, and I just hope we find homes for a
01:04:00lot of animals.
01:04:01Yeah.
01:04:02So, what are you doing for Christmas?
01:04:04I'm just keeping it quiet this year, relaxing on my own.
01:04:07Oh, well, we would love for you to spend it with us.
01:04:10Oh, thank you.
01:04:11I don't want to intrude.
01:04:12It's a day for family.
01:04:13It's no intrusion at all.
01:04:14Heidi's joining us for the day.
01:04:16James is coming for Christmas dinner.
01:04:18You could at least join us for that, couldn't you?
01:04:20Maybe.
01:04:23Speaking of family, where is yours?
01:04:25Won't they miss you?
01:04:26I don't think so.
01:04:27They're back in Kansas.
01:04:29Every parent wants to be with their child at Christmas, no matter how old or young.
01:04:34It's not that simple.
01:04:36Well, why ever not?
01:04:39Oh, okay.
01:04:41Come on.
01:04:41Out with it.
01:04:43We're, uh, not that close anymore, and it's, I just don't think that they want to forgive me.
01:04:52Caleb, trust me.
01:04:54If there's anything to forgive, they've already done it.
01:04:58You know, certainly Christmas is the perfect time for healing and forgiveness.
01:05:03It's what it's all about.
01:05:07Take whatever step you can.
01:05:08Even a small one.
01:05:10Give them something.
01:05:12You know, a way to bridge the gap between you.
01:05:15That'll be the best Christmas present.
01:05:19Thanks, Margaret.
01:05:20Yeah.
01:05:21Well, either way, the invitation still stands.
01:05:24I appreciate that.
01:05:33This is Rex, who you were asking about.
01:05:35Like I said, he is great with children and a wonderful family dog.
01:05:40It's beautiful.
01:05:41Aw.
01:05:41So, yeah, if you just want to head over to James over there, he'll help you start the paperwork.
01:05:45Of course.
01:05:47We'll come back and check on you in a few minutes and see how you're doing.
01:05:53Hey, guess what?
01:05:55What?
01:05:56The couple over there is thinking about adopting Rex.
01:06:01Oh, that's great.
01:06:03They have two kids at home.
01:06:05They'll win them over, I'm sure.
01:06:07It's not certain yet.
01:06:08They're also thinking about Ollie.
01:06:11Oh.
01:06:12Always great, too.
01:06:14Do you want Rex to stay?
01:06:17No, no.
01:06:18He needs a good home.
01:06:21And he looks so happy.
01:06:24He's a sweetheart, too.
01:06:26No.
01:06:28He's smaller than Rex.
01:06:30Yeah.
01:06:31I was thinking the same thing.
01:06:33But Rex is so friendly.
01:06:35And he's been here so long.
01:06:39How do we choose?
01:06:42Would you want to adopt both?
01:06:44They get along with each other and other dogs.
01:06:47I don't know.
01:06:49This would be our first dog.
01:06:51I think we need to stick with one for now.
01:06:54No pressure.
01:06:54Just a thought.
01:06:57Hi.
01:06:57Hi.
01:07:03I'll be right back.
01:07:11So, how's it going over there?
01:07:13They're still deciding.
01:07:15Although...
01:07:16What?
01:07:17I think Ollie's going to be their choice.
01:07:20Oh.
01:07:22I really wanted Rex to have a homeless Christmas.
01:07:25Yeah.
01:07:26Me, too.
01:07:28He still could.
01:07:30Yeah.
01:07:31The drive isn't over yet.
01:07:35What?
01:07:37There's a connection between you two.
01:07:39I mean it.
01:07:40I'm not trying to get you to do something you don't want to, but...
01:07:43I can see you love Rex.
01:07:45Amber, we all care about the animals here.
01:07:48Caring for their well-being isn't the same as worrying that he's not with you.
01:07:53Am I wrong?
01:07:58No.
01:08:02How are you going to feel if they choose Rex?
01:08:09I'm going to go check on them.
01:08:11Will you watch Rex for a second?
01:08:18How are we doing over here?
01:08:20Good.
01:08:21All right.
01:08:28What do you think, Rex?
01:08:30I'm afraid I'm not a perfect fit for you.
01:08:34It's just me.
01:08:35And I don't want to let you down, you know?
01:08:39She is right, though.
01:08:42If anyone else adopted you, I'd really miss you.
01:08:47You're my buddy.
01:08:50What do you think?
01:08:52You want to give us a shot?
01:08:54You and me?
01:08:55Yeah.
01:08:56Okay.
01:08:56Let's do this.
01:09:05We're doing this.
01:09:06Yeah.
01:09:08Here's some instructions on Ollie specifically, what and how much he's used to eating, and
01:09:12general things as well.
01:09:14Okay.
01:09:15So, we're all set?
01:09:16Yes.
01:09:17Thanks.
01:09:18Thank you so much.
01:09:20Bye, Ollie.
01:09:27So, ready to sign Rex's adoption papers?
01:09:31Yeah.
01:09:32I am.
01:09:34And got it.
01:09:38Bye-bye.
01:09:39Merry Christmas.
01:09:42Hey, looks like a successful day.
01:09:44These are all the adopted animals today.
01:09:46The thickest pile ever.
01:09:47That's so good.
01:09:49Who would have thought this would all come together?
01:09:51Not me, if I'm being honest.
01:09:52Congratulations.
01:09:54And really, we couldn't have done it without your help either.
01:09:57Oh, glad I could help.
01:09:59Do you know why I do it?
01:10:01For the animals?
01:10:03That's nice and all, but no.
01:10:06I do it to see that smile on your face.
01:10:08For you.
01:10:10Oh.
01:10:11Amber, I think you know how special I think you are.
01:10:15And when I see something special, I can't let it go.
01:10:20Ryan, I...
01:10:21Thank you for thinking so much of me.
01:10:25I know you care, and...
01:10:27And...
01:10:27I appreciate all of the support that you've given to this shelter.
01:10:33And your friendship.
01:10:35But...
01:10:36But, uh...
01:10:38Nothing beyond that?
01:10:40No.
01:10:41I'm sorry.
01:10:42I had no idea.
01:10:44I, um...
01:10:46I had to try.
01:10:48Can't blame me, can you?
01:10:49No.
01:10:50And I'm flattered.
01:10:52Well, at least I got that right.
01:10:55I had hoped maybe I could at least take you out.
01:10:59Let you get to know me more.
01:11:01I appreciate that, but...
01:11:03I wouldn't want to lead you on.
01:11:05You haven't.
01:11:06Are you sure?
01:11:07I feel so silly.
01:11:10If you want to change your mind about donating to the shelter, I completely respect that.
01:11:14Amber.
01:11:16Don't worry.
01:11:17I'm okay.
01:11:18And, uh...
01:11:19Thank you for being honest with me.
01:11:23You're a wonderful person, Ryan.
01:11:29Sorry, man.
01:11:31I guess you spoke up.
01:11:34It's...
01:11:34Fine.
01:11:43A record number of adoptions in one day.
01:11:46Seriously.
01:11:46You guys were great.
01:11:48We did it.
01:11:49And I don't know about you, but I am exhausted.
01:11:52We're close tomorrow and Christmas Day, but to take care of the animals, how about we take turns?
01:11:57Sure.
01:11:58Works for me.
01:11:59Great.
01:12:00Who wants to go out for dinner?
01:12:02I'm in.
01:12:03I'm, uh, actually kind of beat.
01:12:06And I want to get Rex settled at home.
01:12:08Uh, I'll finish up here before I go.
01:12:10Merry Christmas to you both.
01:12:12Come on, Rex.
01:12:13No!
01:12:24Hey, I found one of your toys, Rex.
01:12:26There you go.
01:12:27There's a good one.
01:12:29Stay.
01:12:30Don't move.
01:12:31You look adorable.
01:12:36Guess who joined the family?
01:12:40Oh, yeah.
01:12:42It feels right.
01:12:44Already the house is warmer with Rex in it.
01:12:46I could see that coming.
01:12:48You adopting him and all.
01:12:50He's a good dog.
01:12:51Yeah.
01:12:52He is.
01:12:53And you let him in.
01:12:55I'm proud of you.
01:12:56Thanks.
01:12:57So now, it's time to keep going.
01:13:00What do you mean?
01:13:01It's time to let others in your life.
01:13:04You, I?
01:13:04You isolated yourself from people who love you.
01:13:08Am I wrong?
01:13:10No.
01:13:11Not really.
01:13:13Just listen.
01:13:14I've tried to keep my friend hat on and support you in whatever way you feel.
01:13:19But let me put on my pastor hat for a minute, okay?
01:13:23Okay.
01:13:24It's been hard to watch you struggle this past year.
01:13:27Not only because you pushed away your parents, but also God.
01:13:32I'm not trying to.
01:13:36I know my parents meant well, and they just want what's best for me, but, but they don't
01:13:42know what it's like.
01:13:43They were trying in the best way they knew how, with faith.
01:13:46And they're not the only ones that want what's best for you.
01:13:50God does too.
01:13:51It doesn't seem like it.
01:13:53Why?
01:13:55Because the accident is the hardest thing you've gone through so far?
01:13:58Do you think it's easy for him to watch you struggle?
01:14:01Well, it isn't.
01:14:03Then why?
01:14:05Why let any of this happen?
01:14:07Because he loves you so much, he will let you go through those hard times.
01:14:11Not because he wants to see you suffer, but because he knows you will come out stronger
01:14:17and happier if you surrender any suffering to him, and if you just don't give up.
01:14:22You really believe that, don't you?
01:14:24I do.
01:14:26In the first chapter of James, he taught that we can see a trial as joy.
01:14:30Knowing that the testing of our faith produces patience, and that in turn strengthens us
01:14:36and perfects us.
01:14:38So the question is, do you believe that?
01:14:49Rex, come here.
01:14:51Ready?
01:14:52Sit.
01:14:54Hey.
01:14:55Got something for you.
01:15:00I picked it up myself.
01:15:02Do you like it?
01:15:04Should we try it out?
01:15:05Okay.
01:15:06Here we go.
01:15:10It suits you.
01:15:11Merry Christmas, buddy.
01:15:38Hello, Caleb?
01:15:41Hi.
01:15:42How are you? Is everything okay?
01:15:44Is that him?
01:15:45Shh, yes.
01:15:46Yeah, yeah, everything's fine.
01:15:49Listen, I know it's been a while since we spoke,
01:15:52and I'm sorry about that, and a lot of other things, too.
01:15:57It's probably too late, and there might not be any flights left,
01:16:00but if you wanted to come visit for Christmas, that'd be okay.
01:16:05I'd be okay with that.
01:16:09I'm going to look up flights right now.
01:16:12We'll be there Christmas Day at the latest.
01:16:15Okay.
01:16:20Did we make cinnamon rolls this year?
01:16:22I did.
01:16:23Yes.
01:16:24All right, now, all the food is out,
01:16:27so eat and graze as you wish for breakfast,
01:16:29but remember that Christmas dinner is at 5 o'clock,
01:16:32so don't stuff yourselves or you'll be sorry.
01:16:35We never do that.
01:16:37Mm-hmm.
01:16:38Did you tell James it time for dinner?
01:16:39I did.
01:16:40And you said you invited Caleb?
01:16:42I did.
01:16:43So, is he coming?
01:16:45I don't know.
01:16:46He didn't say yes, but he didn't exactly say no either.
01:16:49Maybe I should have said something,
01:16:51like seconded the invitation.
01:16:55He seemed, I don't know,
01:16:58maybe he was just tired after the adoption drive.
01:17:01Come to think of it,
01:17:02maybe I shouldn't have asked him to check on the animals at all over Christmas.
01:17:05He's Rex now.
01:17:06Honey, you are overthinking everything.
01:17:08And he'll probably come.
01:17:10I guess we'll see in a few hours.
01:17:14Hold still.
01:17:15Just need to get you dry.
01:17:18Almost there.
01:17:20And good enough.
01:17:22It's better, right?
01:17:23You know, we still need to talk about where you're going to sleep.
01:17:26No more sleeping in my bed, okay?
01:17:29Who knows?
01:17:29Maybe I'll get you one of those ridiculously large dog pillows.
01:17:32Would you like that?
01:17:33Is that a yes?
01:17:34Okay.
01:17:43What could it be?
01:17:45Hmm?
01:17:45Stay here.
01:17:53Mom.
01:17:55Caleb.
01:17:57Oh.
01:18:01Dad.
01:18:03Merry Christmas, son.
01:18:06I'm glad you guys came.
01:18:08Us two.
01:18:09Who's that?
01:18:10That's my dog, Rex.
01:18:12Come on in.
01:18:16Hi, Rex.
01:18:17Oh, hi.
01:18:21How are you?
01:18:22He's wonderful.
01:18:24Come here, Grandpa B.
01:18:31Where are the little tongs for the veggie tray?
01:18:33Uh, that drawer.
01:18:35David, did you find the cloth napkins?
01:18:39I'll get it.
01:18:41Oh, Heidi, would you be a dear and grab me a picture?
01:18:44Yeah, of course.
01:18:48Something smells good.
01:18:49Yep.
01:18:50Dinner's almost ready.
01:18:51I think Caleb's coming, too.
01:18:53Oh, he is?
01:18:54Yeah.
01:18:55Why?
01:18:57I just figured he wasn't.
01:18:59Did he say something?
01:19:01No.
01:19:02No reason.
01:19:04James?
01:19:05Maybe he just wanted to have some space.
01:19:09You know, he's independent.
01:19:14Or, maybe because he likes you.
01:19:20He said that?
01:19:21No, but it was clear.
01:19:24Unspoken, but I could tell.
01:19:27Well, then why wouldn't he come?
01:19:30Well, maybe because he saw you and Ryan.
01:19:34You know, with the two of you getting together.
01:19:38I'm not with Ryan.
01:19:39Oh.
01:19:41Uh, it looked like it.
01:19:43At the adoption fair.
01:19:45No.
01:19:46We're not together.
01:19:49But Caleb thinks I am?
01:20:04Amber.
01:20:06Hi.
01:20:08Merry Christmas.
01:20:10Merry Christmas to you, too.
01:20:13Do you want to come in?
01:20:15I didn't mean to interrupt.
01:20:17I can come back later.
01:20:19No, Amber, wait.
01:20:24Rex just in there getting spoiled by my parents.
01:20:29They came?
01:20:31I'm so glad.
01:20:33Yeah, me too.
01:20:35Hopefully I can give Rex a good wife here.
01:20:37I have no doubt you will.
01:20:39I think you both will be very happy.
01:20:46I'm not dating Ryan.
01:20:49What?
01:20:50James said that you thought I was, but we're not.
01:20:53And I have never felt that way about him.
01:20:56Especially not now.
01:20:58When I've come to...
01:21:02admire you.
01:21:04Admire?
01:21:06More than that, really.
01:21:10I think I'm falling in love with you.
01:21:14And not just because of what you did for the shelter, but...
01:21:19Because you're amazing.
01:21:21All on your own.
01:21:24Is that all right?
01:21:29Amber, I...
01:21:31I felt something for you the first day we met.
01:21:33You did?
01:21:35How could I not?
01:21:37And I think...
01:21:39I think I've been falling in love with you a little more each moment we've spent together since then.
01:21:45So yes.
01:21:47It's more than all right.
01:21:48Good.
01:21:51What?
01:21:54It's just...
01:21:56It's hard for me to imagine someone so full of life and purpose and kindness ever being interested in me.
01:22:09One day, I hope you recognize all of the good and strength that I see each time I look at
01:22:15you.
01:22:16But until then, I am happy to remind you.
01:22:30Merry Christmas, Caleb.
01:22:33Merry Christmas.
01:22:38Merry Christmas.
01:23:07Merry Christmas.
01:23:09Merry Christmas.
