00:36Metal Gear Survive.
00:38However you do it, please heal yourself quickly.
00:45A Metal Gear game in name only, Metal Gear Survive feels like a hollow, soulless experience.
00:51Perhaps if the game had eschewed the Metal Gear name, then it might have fared a tad bit better,
00:57but only just. Through and through, this game just isn't very fun to play. Lacking any sort of stealth,
01:03espionage, goodness, Survive appropriately, we suppose, leans hard into the survival elements
01:08and base building amid a bunch of zombie shenanigans. It's honestly all just a tedious affair that even
01:13fails to capitalize on fun zombie-inspired gameplay mechanics. Oh, and yeah, let's not forget that
01:19players even had to dig back into their wallets to buy some extra save slots.
01:32Dead Rising 4.
01:43Dead Rising 4 really feels like a departure from the original titles, and not necessarily in a good
01:49way here. While trying out new things in a long-running series is often lauded for many games,
01:54in the case of Dead Rising 4, it made for a more bland, less thrilling zombie-slaying experience.
02:00Frank West once again stepped into the lead role. However, he lacked the same pizzazz as the OG game,
02:05not offering up enough charisma or sticking power to make the whole game worth playing through.
02:10Dead Rising 4 is a much more jovial affair, at least when compared to the original titles.
02:15Yes, you still slay hordes of zombies, but it's all just a bit too tongue-in-cheek as opposed to
02:20ominous.
02:21And while the timer system wasn't really everybody's cup of tea,
02:24the exclusion of it here hurt the game more than it helped it.
02:36Umbrella Corps
02:45Resident Evil fans, and indeed zombie game fans, really deserve so much more with Umbrella Corps.
02:50Acting as a spin-off from the venerable RE franchise, Umbrella Corps is a third-person
02:55shooter with heavy competitive elements, first and foremost. Inherently, that's not a bad thing for
03:00a spin-off game. However, it didn't capitalize on the Resident Evil name well, and instead just felt
03:06like a lackluster generic experience that really failed to please anyone. Much like the aforementioned
03:11Metal Gear Survive, it seems like this game hoped to lure in enough RE fans. This move wasn't a boon
03:17for the game since it never even feels like a horror experience, let alone a Resident Evil game.
03:22Yes, some fun can certainly be had with the frenetic third-person shooting, but it all just feels a bit
03:27too clunky, generic, and uninspired to play for any extended time.
03:31Secure the transmission point.
03:39Dead Alliance
03:40Dead Alliance really seems to be forgotten by time, even among zombie game fans. This is probably for
03:46good reason, since this 2017 zombie shooter really is quite bad all around. Lacking any meaningful content,
03:53polish, or zombie identity, it was probably destined to be left in the bargain bin. Part tactical shooter,
03:58part co-op game, part survival horror, Dead Alliance epitomizes the idea of Jack of all trades,
04:04master of none. For a game relying so heavily on zombies as a core premise of the shooting gameplay,
04:09they never manage to be intense, scary, or even immersion building.
04:16What you get is a clunky, boring, and highly uninspired zombie game with little to keep you playing.
04:23The enemy is taking our Suzu juice.
04:26Escape Dead Island
04:35Most zombie game fans from 2014 probably remember seeing the cel-shaded game crop up online at one
04:41point or another. To learn that it was a spin-off from the janky yet still enjoyable Dead Island games
04:46was quite the shock. Escape Dead Island took a much different approach to gameplay, focusing more on
04:52narrative and mystery solving instead of slaying zombies, crafting weapons, and generally just
04:57surviving in an otherwise gorgeous island setting, one, of course, overrun with lots of zombies.
05:02The clashing of ideas and systems in this game made it a confusing one to play through. It has its
05:06fans,
05:07yes, but it hardly feels or plays like a traditional Dead Island game, instead offering up bland and clunky
05:13combat, uninspired mission design, and an inconsistent tone overall.
05:25The Walking Dead Survival Instinct
05:27Poor Walking Dead fans, they never really seem to get a super solid game in their beloved,
05:32thrilling, and harrowing zombie-filled world. 2013's Survival Instinct is a laughing stock of
05:37a zombie game. The best two words to describe this game would be squandered potential.
05:47The Walking Dead is overflowing with fantastic characters, superb worldbuilding, and oodles of
05:52terror, but Survival Instinct lacks all of these things, despite the loose ties to the AMC TV show.
05:58Without even mentioning the horrible graphics, even for the time, battling the undead in this game just
06:03never feels fun or satisfying, thanks to poor controls and any lack of punch from weapons. There may be
06:09some mindless fun here for an hour or so, but your best bet is to seek out more robust zombie
06:14games.
06:23Land of the Dead Road to Fiddler's Green
06:33The 2000's era of gaming was a sort of wild west, where developers and publishers were kind of willing to
06:39greenlight anything to see what stuck with players. But, as you can guess from the title of this list,
06:44many of these didn't stick with players at all. Enter 2005, when Land of the Dead Road to Fiddler's Green
06:50released. And,
06:51well, let's just say it blew its landing with a loud, painful thud. Zombie fans were excited for
06:56this one, at least to some extent, considering it's based on George A. Romero's Land of the Dead film.
07:01But, nope, it squandered that potential right out of the starting gate. Outdated, buggy, clunky, stiff,
07:07and repetitive, these are all words to describe Road to Fiddler's Green. Best to detour around this one.
07:14A doctor was on the intercom. He had locked himself in a security room. I had to find him.
07:21Shellshock 2 Blood Trails
07:32Oh man, talk about a confusing premise of a game. One part Vietnam War shooter, one part horror game,
07:39and another part zombie slaying action. Shellshock 2 Blood Trails had tonal shift after tonal shift,
07:44and not for the good reasons. While yes, the zombie infection aspect that spread its way throughout
07:49the Vietnam War narrative was unique, at least in premise, it just made for a game that didn't know
07:54how to present itself to its players. As a shooter, the gunplay was lackluster and tedious. As a zombie
08:00horror game, it was mostly laughable and failed to offer immediacy, tension, or terror, even amidst the
08:05horrifying war parts. Blood Trails is just a mess of the game all around, and failed to impress
08:10players and critics alike in 2009.
08:15Orphan 1, this is Orphan 6. Do you copy over? We got Cal here. I'll wait for you at the
08:21house.
08:22Amy. Hello?
08:24Lana, I've been worried. Did you get out? Yes, both of us. We're in the train. We'll be there soon.
08:30Good golly, 2012's Amy is downright brutal, and not at all for the right reasons. Often the laughing
08:37stock of the zombie subgenre, this game is a real mess from start to finish. Right off the bat,
08:42let me ask you this. Do you like escort missions? How about an annoyingly frustrating escort mission
08:47that makes up the entirety of the game? Well, unless you are a masochistic enough person to answer yes to
08:52those questions, then it's pretty darn clear why Amy is an abysmal mess of a zombie game.
08:57You're such a brave girl. We're getting out of here.
09:01As if a full-time escort mission wasn't enough, players had to contend with terrible AI,
09:06broken stealth, tedious platforming, and a narrative that was just all over the place.
09:11Amy may have had an intriguing premise, but it failed to impress in any other way.
09:15Oh, but don't worry, we still have one more, an even more terrible zombie game if that's to
09:20imagine. Let's do this.
09:23Something is blocking the door from behind. I can't open it.
09:28Survivor Stories
09:35While certainly not as well known as Amy, for the wrong reasons obviously,
09:39Infestation Survivor Stories, also from 2012, is easily the worst zombie video game around.
09:44We aren't going to pretend the actual gameplay is good here, because it's not, not at all. But most of
09:49the
09:50ire for this game comes from stuff outside of the game itself. Things such as false and misleading
09:55advertising and marketing, egregious pay-to-win mechanics, myriad problems with the developers,
10:00and more led this game to receive intense and warranted backlash. Heck, even if all of these
10:05deeply frustrating things didn't happen with this game, there's just still no getting around the
10:09fact that it's just a broken mess of a game, full stop. It's so badly wanted to be like DayZ,
10:15itself a popular and beloved zombie-inspired MMO of sorts, but it failed around every corner,
10:21both inside and outside of the game. So, do you agree with our picks for this list?
10:25What are some of the worst zombie games you have played? Let us know in the comments.
10:54I will be back to that list!
10:55I will, uh, be careful about it.
