00:00Why is a fake Euronews website targeting Hungary's election with pro-Kremlin propaganda?
00:09Using the same branding, logo, layout and style as us,
00:12this website, which looks just like Euronews,
00:15shared an article about Hungarian opposition leader, Peter Magyar.
00:18It claims that Magyar had insulted Donald Trump by calling him a senile grandpa.
00:23Allegedly, he also promised to undo key agreements with the US
00:27if he wins the Hungarian parliamentary elections.
00:30On March 22nd, speaking at a campaign event in Nagy Konezza,
00:34Hungarian opposition leader, Peter Magyar, sharply attacked US President Donald Trump.
00:39The issue is, both the website and the article are entirely fake.
00:43This article was shared widely on X alongside a video repeating the same claim,
00:48which gained thousands of views.
00:50We know says that the video spread across multiple social media accounts
00:53with similar comments and timings suggesting this was coordinated activity.
00:57Researchers at the NIDA project, which tracks disinformation,
01:01reported that the post was part of a disinformation campaign known as Storm 1516.
01:06Storm 1516 is a Russian propaganda group that creates and spreads disinformation
01:10to further the interests of the Russian government.
01:13It's typically active around major political events such as elections.
01:17Storm 1516 was already found to be behind false claims spread in other elections,
01:22like the 2024 US presidential vote and the 2025 German elections.
01:27This time around, Hungary's highly polarized parliamentary elections,
01:30scheduled for April 12th, will see Magyar challenge Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
01:35The campaign has already been marked by allegations of interference and manipulation,
01:39while Orban's government has recently been accused of handling sensitive information
01:43from Brussels to Moscow.
