Malcolm Bright, un criminologue qui a fait ses preuves, aide la police de New York à traquer les tueurs multi-récidivistes. Ce psychologue très efficace a des raisons personnelles d'apporter son aide aux autorités. En effet, le père de Malcolm est connu pour être le tueur en série surnommé Le Chirurgien. Malcolm tente peut-être de réparer le mal qu'il a fait en évitant que d'autres personnes ne soient assassinées par le même type de psychotiques.
