00:00In this episode I go on my craziest solo mission ever.
00:04I will swim to an abandoned soviet aircraft carrier.
00:10Where I will spend 24 hours.
00:12Inside I find a jet fighter, many projectiles and countless interesting rooms.
00:18You don't want to miss this one.
00:20Hi I'm Bob, an urban explorer.
00:23And with friends I explore the most amazing abandoned places worldwide.
00:27In early 2020 my plan was to travel to China.
00:32With the main mission of exploring the aircraft carrier Minsk.
00:35Located near Shanghai.
00:38However, the start of the pandemic led to the closure of the country.
00:41And my trip got cancelled last minute.
00:44The Minsk, the second ship of the Kiev class aircraft carrier.
00:47Was laid down in Soviet Russia, which is now Ukraine, in 1972.
00:52It entered service with the Soviet Navy in 1978.
00:56The Minsk does not look like a regular aircraft carrier.
00:59And is categorized as a heavy aviation cruiser.
01:03Despite its limited aircraft capacity.
01:05A ski jump ramp instead of a catapult system.
01:08And the lack of a full-length flight deck.
01:10The Kiev class carriers marked a significant advancement.
01:13In Soviet naval aviation capabilities during the cold war.
01:18Around 1990, just before the fall of the Soviet Union.
01:21The Minsk faced severe engineering problems.
01:25Leading to its mudballing.
01:27Upgrading and maintaining these carriers became increasingly challenging.
01:31After the fall of the Soviet Union.
01:33Eventually resulting in the Minsk being sent for scrapping in South Korea in 1993.
01:38However, due to protests from local environmentalists.
01:42The ship was sold once again.
01:44This time for scrapping China.
01:46In 1998, the ship was purchased for around 4.3 million dollars.
01:51To create a military themed tourist attraction.
01:54Saving it from being dismantled.
01:56It became the world's first theme park on a real aircraft carrier.
02:01Opening in 2000 as Minsk World in Shenzhen.
02:04And evolving into the Minsk World Military Theme Park by 2006.
02:08Over time, it transformed from a theme park into a popular science education and national defense center.
02:15After experiencing a decline in visitors.
02:18The ship underwent repairs in 2016.
02:21And was relocated to its current position in 2017.
02:24With plans to reopen as a theme park.
02:27Unfortunately, those plans were never realized.
02:30With the opening of borders in 2023.
02:32I immediately arranged a trip to China.
02:36Because the ship is guarded now.
02:38I plan this mission with my friends Robin and Charles.
02:43I think three or four dogs.
02:46Dogs?
02:47Dogs here.
02:47Okay.
02:48All right.
02:48Are they trained for sound?
02:50Yes, exactly.
02:51And the height of the back side?
02:53The back side is approximately like two or three meters.
02:58Okay.
02:58Which means if you don't have a leather or something else.
03:02You need to have a strong power.
03:08Otherwise, otherwise, trust me.
03:10That would be really tough.
03:12Where is the guard?
03:13Also there.
03:14It's supposed to be here.
03:17It's facing the entrance too.
03:19It's facing the entrance.
03:20They can store new civilian cameras in that area.
03:25So they gotta track your movements.
03:27Yep.
03:27All facing the aircraft carrier.
03:30Exactly.
03:31This mission won't be easy.
03:33New security measures are in place.
03:36And those who tried to go have been spotted and turned over to the police.
03:40But I just have to try.
03:42Reconversion of the ship starts in a few days.
03:45So this might be my only chance.
03:47I make a plan and get ready for my craziest solo mission ever.
03:52I will try to swim to the ship at night and spend 24 hours inside.
03:57All kinds of stuff, right?
03:59Yeah.
04:00Biggest challenge is getting the stuff in this bag.
04:02Yeah.
04:05But you keep this one whenever you return in.
04:07Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:07Just some extra safety bags.
04:09Wow, so many stuff.
04:11Yeah, it's too much.
04:13Too much.
04:15Way too much.
04:16Getting ready for the big mission.
04:18Packing the stuff.
04:19It's not really waterproof, but I have to keep it above water.
04:23So this will be open.
04:24I'll use some tape.
04:27Three plastic bins with my stuff in it.
04:31Wow.
04:33Really heavy.
04:35I hope I'm not gonna drown.
04:37So thanks to Robin, I got this thing.
04:40Seems a little, right?
04:41My pleasure.
04:44All right.
04:46Time to go to the Minsk.
04:49Robin and Charles take me on a ferry.
04:51And we witness a beautiful sunset.
05:08Really nice.
05:11These are meat dumplings.
05:14After having some delicious food, I take a cab to my final destination.
05:18The mission started.
05:20No more turning back.
05:21And the adrenaline rushes in.
05:23I have to walk three kilometer, about two miles.
05:30There she is in the distance.
05:36What the hell am I doing?
05:39Oh well.
05:40I came to China with a mission, right?
05:43I have to find my way through high bushes.
05:48From this point I need to be really careful.
05:51I need to walk close by one of the security stations without being hurt by the dogs.
05:55I put away my camera to fully focus.
06:00The first obstacle succeeded.
06:03Now the most scary part has to be done.
06:05Swim with a heavy backpack.
06:07For now this is my only concern.
06:09As I never swam with a really heavy backpack on.
06:12I also need to be fast.
06:14Since cameras and lights are pointing at the ship.
06:16Putting tape on the back.
06:18It's not 100% waterproof.
06:21Let's say 95.
06:24Oh my god.
06:25I hope it will float.
06:26Otherwise all the gear will be broken.
06:38So far so good.
06:40Just gonna relax for a second.
06:42Water is pretty hot.
06:45That's good.
06:46Everything outside it's maybe 13, 14, 15 degrees max.
06:53Most important is to get the bag on first.
06:59All right let's go.
07:07Oh shit.
07:08And that was the rope which broke.
07:13I hope nobody hurt me.
07:16I keep calm for a few minutes and try again.
07:19Luckily there's another rope.
07:31Can't believe it.
07:33I made it to the Minsk.
07:36Oh my god.
07:38I just lost my tripod.
07:41But oh well.
07:42I'll buy a new one.
07:44So I made it inside.
07:47The bag got full of water I believe.
07:49But the camera is still dry.
07:52Oh my god.
07:54What a mission.
07:57I enter the ship at the hangar.
08:00And am welcomed by a MiG-23.
08:03This aircraft was not intended for this ship.
08:06Because it did not have the right takeoff and landing requirements.
08:10The designated aircraft for the ship were the Yak-38 forager jump jets.
08:14Capable of executing takeoffs with a combination of vertical and short takeoff.
08:19Using a ski jump launch.
08:21Additionally the ship accommodated a fleet of Kamov Ka-25, 27 and 29 helicopters.
08:28The MiG-23 was a fast and agile soviet fighter plane.
08:32With wings that could change shape.
08:34It was used by different countries during the cold war.
08:38For tasks in both air-to-air and drone attack missions.
08:41In both air-to-air and drone attack missions.
08:42Oh my god.
08:53Oh my god.
08:56Oh my god.

10:01Time to find a sleeping spot.
10:13I quickly take a look on the deck too, since it will be too risky during the day.
10:18In contrast to regular aircraft carriers the Minsk was equipped with numerous weapon systems.
10:35So I walked on a ship for a bit and it's a real maze and I'm pretty tired and this
10:41room is the best I could find.
10:43The problem is upstairs there has been a fire so that means it smells and everything is really dirty.
10:49Let me find if I can find some sheets.
10:54Dirty, oh my god it's all dirty.
11:02Let's grab those so I can sleep on this.
11:06Try to clean it a little bit from dust.
11:10It's really really dirty but yeah I couldn't find any better.
11:13Plastic bags are drying.
11:16Some got holes in it, don't ask me how.
11:18So on my way to the Minsk it was raining so everything got wet.
11:22Hopefully it's dry tomorrow.
11:25This turned on while I was hiking to the Minsk so the battery is empty.
11:31Sucks, the power bank had some issues but cheers guys.
11:37Chilling a bit here.
11:39Drink one beer then go to bed.
11:42It's convenient, you can lock the door, great.
11:46Yeah they still can force the door but it feels a little bit more safe.
12:18Good morning, it's eight o'clock. I think I slept two hours. It's pretty cold.
12:25And I couldn't bring any sleeping gear because I had limited baggage.
12:29And I can tell you it's a really crazy experience to stay on a ship alone.
12:34I even got spooked a few times by my own reflection and lights.
12:38So yeah that's different when you're exploring with two.
12:41A week later when I returned for pictures I was less fortunate.
12:46Edwin who was with me that time woke me up when people walked right past the room where we were
12:50sleeping.
12:51And started a conversation close by.
12:53We managed to sneak to a lower deck.
13:00Reconstruction started and even lights got turned on.
13:13We had to stay hidden for a long time.
13:17Luckily this is not the case today.
13:19So let's explore.
13:21The Minsk houses many real but disarmed projectiles.
13:24This is the P-15 Termit or NATO codename SSN-2 anti-ship missile.
13:31Developed by Soviet Russia in the 1950s.
13:34It has a high explosive load of 454 kilo, 1200 pounds.
14:16So let's explore.
14:19Located here is a Russian made 5365 torpedo designed to destroy surface ships.
14:25The type 53 torpedo is carried by almost all Russian submarines.
14:33Torpedoes were launched from 10 torpedo tubes on this ship.
15:13Here is the SSN-12 long-range ship-to-ship missile depot.
15:18The largest depot on the ship with 24 missiles were stored.
15:21These missiles were especially for enemy aircraft carriers.
15:45I enter the Combat Information Center, the tactical center of the ship.
15:50In the Minsk this part was huge and covered several rooms.
16:38Over the protection was installed at the Battle.
16:38The aspects of the ship become a formerцаper.
16:40Be content from the island as well as we burn in order to float sort of Noor望遠ies.
20:07A big part of the ship has been remodeled when it became a tourist attraction.
20:11But later on I will explore some areas which are still in its original state.
20:56This is an example of a room which is still in its original state.
21:15Here's the bridge or wheelhouse where you could find the captain, navigation department chief,
21:20stearman, marine engineer, signal observer, radar man and anchor operator.
21:26Here's the bridge.
22:06Here's the bridge.
22:30From here I have a good look on the surrounding.
22:33From here I have a good look on the surrounding.
22:40Next to the bridge is the observation communication room equipped with instruments for collecting information provided by pilots, radar systems
22:48and other naval vessels.
22:50It's the most confidential part of the ship.
23:19Here's the bridge.
23:21Here's the bridge.
23:23Here's the bridge.
23:26Here's the bridge.
23:30Here's the bridge.
23:31Here's the bridge.
23:33Here's the bridge.
23:58Here's the bridge.
23:59Here's the bridge.
24:02Here's the bridge.
24:08Here's the bridge.
24:09Here's the bridge.
24:10Here's the bridge.
24:13Here's the bridge.
24:14Here's the bridge.
24:16Here's the bridge.
24:18Here's the bridge.
24:19Here's the bridge.
24:20Here's the bridge.
24:20Here's the bridge.
24:21Here's the bridge.
24:21Here's the bridge.
24:46Many valuable items have been stolen during the time the ship was not guarded,
24:50including guns and other soviets relics.
25:06The spaces inside the Minsk seem endless.
25:47Theם on the other side, the crew on the ship is also located in the space where the ship is
25:50also located at the dock.
26:01Nothing, I still hope to find some guns.
27:06This part of the ship hosts the aircraft scale model exhibition with scale models of aircraft carriers from various countries.
28:44I explored living quarters, medical center and some other rooms, which I believe are not original but reconstructed.
28:51Since there was a fire in this part, it's in a bad shape.
30:57Well, that's disappointing.
31:00In contrast to many other projectiles on the ship, these are fake.
31:04But hey, let's be honest, it's a really cool sight how this missile depot looks like filled
31:10with these missiles.
31:55Here's one of the two loaders which transported the missiles to the upper deck.
32:19We arrive at the next depot.
32:21In this armor depot they stored the 76mm shells for the naval gun AK-726.
32:28You can find one gun near the bow and one near the stern.
32:43Here you have both real and wooden fake shells to fill up the empty spaces.
33:10Here we go.
33:27This is the shell hoist which transported the shells to the upper floor.
33:31I climb the stairs to see how it looks like.
33:34Here we go.
33:53Here we go.
34:14Here's another supersonic cruise missile.
34:17The P-500 Basalt, NATO codename SSN-12 Sandbox.
34:22Which could carry a high explosive or nuclear warhead.
34:26Quick break.
34:28I've seen quite a part of the ship.
34:30Before it gets dark again I have to find all the places which have windows.
34:35Because it's nice to have natural light.
34:36And it's less obvious of course to get caught.
34:38And then in the evening I'm gonna find my way down in the engine room.
34:43So it's gonna be cool.
34:45The ship is a real maze.
34:47And some areas seem to be only accessible from the fly deck.
34:51But the guards don't go inside their shed.
34:54Luckily they are busy with their own thing.
34:56So I take my chances and try some doors.
35:21I end up in a bar.
35:48So I gotta keep it here because I'm gonna take my attention.
35:49I don't want to leave the bus at this end.
35:52I'm gonna make the bus at this end.
35:55So it's gonna get into the inside of my vehicle.
35:56So I have to find the bus at this side.
35:58And if you have to find the bus at that side,
36:03then the bus is a new angle.
36:05So it's gonna walk into the bus.
36:57It's time to venture inside some other non-touristic parts.
37:00Some of them are still in original state while other parts have been heavily stripped.
37:47This seems to be another 76mm shell depot for the other naval turret.
37:52It looks less fancy than the other one, but it's still impressive to see.
40:39This is the Aviation Control Center.
40:41Here they oversee and coordinate the movements of aircraft on the flight deck.
41:26This is the Aviation Control Center.
41:26This is the Aviation Control Center.
41:35What's remarkable is that you can find quite some western equipment on this ship.
41:55Here is another security booth.
42:19This is the Aviation Control Center.
42:27This is the Aviation Control Center.
42:56This is the Aviation Control Center.
42:57This is the Aviation Control Center.
43:14I scale a ladder at the Aviation Control Center and end up in another cool part.
43:47This is the Aviation Control Center.
44:17This is the Aviation Control Center and Pollock with first passenger roaming around the direction.
46:21I am back at Angar, the part where I entered the ship yesterday.
47:40From a higher deck I look into the engine room.
47:43It's in a really bad shape and looks pretty dangerous too.
47:47Let's see if it's doable to get there.
48:04This is the engine control room.
48:06In this place I was hidden for workers, who suddenly appeared on the ship when I returned
48:12for pictures.
48:30I venture further on the lower decks to find some interesting rooms but because of a strange
48:36smell I didn't feel comfortable going in without proper equipment.
48:55I expected the rooms to be in original state on the lower decks but many rooms were turned
49:01into utility rooms when the ship got reconverted.
49:20From here the ship is in a terrible condition and also the floors have many holes and they don't
49:26feel safe.
49:27I proceed with caution.
49:41Here we go.
49:44Here we go.
49:58It goes even deeper.
49:59It's insane.
50:15Everything is wrecked and I decide not to risk my life to see what's left of the engine room.
50:20Since I'm totally alone here.
50:27Well that's the end of an amazing day, an unforgettable experience.
50:31As you can see it's getting dark.
50:34And then I have to wait for the right timing to go out again.
50:39So yeah I only have to get back for pictures.
50:43It's not really a punishment right.
50:47So I'm packing and I found this in a drawer, lots of plastic bags which is pretty convenient.
50:53So I can't pack every product individually.
50:56Thank you Ali.
50:57I had a really nice day.
50:59Thanks man.
51:00That will do.
51:02After packing my stuff I go to the perfect spot to keep an eye on the surrounding.
51:07But there is a lot of activity going on.
51:09It turned out I had to wait for a few more hours for the perfect timing to go out unnoticed.
51:29The guard is leaving, perfect moment.
51:33Everything went smooth.
51:34I changed my clothes and walked back to civilization.
51:39Well, maybe I should return to the Minsk.
51:47I have to wait for a few more hours for the rest of my life.
51:59Thanks for watching.
