00:00In this episode, I venture inside a massive World War II bunker with Elko and stumble upon an arsenal of
00:07guns and cannons.
00:08The guns are still in here.
00:10Hi, I'm Bob, an urban explorer and with friends I explore the most amazing abandoned places worldwide.
00:24Today, I'm on the road again with Elko!
00:30So we're in France, gonna visit a really cool Maginot bunker.
00:35I don't know when we were there for the first time for the episode. A few years ago at least,
00:42right?
00:42Five years, yeah. It was a nice one but this one is gonna be a lot better.
00:48Strategically positioned along the Franco-German border, the Maginot Line spanned approximately 720 kilometers,
00:55which is 450 miles, making it the world's second largest fortification.
01:00However, during the Second World War, the Germans bypassed it by invading Belgium.
01:06Subsequently, the bunkers proved obsolete for modern warfare.
01:09And speaking of battles, have you ever imagined leading your own nation through the era of World War II?

01:57The only entrance, I know, it's gonna be a tight one.
02:01But I fit in here, normally.
02:05Bob can squeeze into tight spaces.
02:08Yes, Mark.
02:10Oh yeah.
02:19That's it.
02:20Yeah, that's it. We're inside already.
02:22I'm pretty disappointed.
02:24I know you can pull yourself to the front.
02:27Yeah.
02:27Yeah.
02:28Oh, yes.
02:29My lips?
02:30Yeah, that's cute.
02:34We made it.
02:36What are you doing, man?
02:38You're performing a circus act here.
02:40It's the wrong side of the ladder.
02:43Cute.
02:44Yeah, very cute.
02:45Here we can go down, but maybe we want to see cannons.
02:53It's pretty cool.
02:55Oh, big one.
02:58That's big-ass cannons, man.
03:01Like three, four floors high.
03:03Crazy.
03:03It looks like you can still pull all these levers.
03:06Even this one here.
03:07It's not connected.
03:08Ah, it's not connected anymore.
03:10You can still smell the oil and the grease.
03:18It's crazy, man.
03:19It's made from wood here.
03:20I hear it's broken.
03:22Oh, we have to take care.
03:23It's not really stable.
03:25This bunker was constructed between 1930 and 1935 and was one of the most heavily armed units.
03:33The underground tunnels have an average depth of 30 meters, almost 100 feet and was manned by around 800 men
03:41and 26 officers.
03:43If I climb up here, maybe there is something.
03:45Yeah, check it out.
03:47Yeah.
03:47The good thing about this Maginot bunker is that a lot of cannons and guns are still in here.
03:53The last one we've been to was completely cleared out.
03:56Oh, it's still impressive.
03:57Yeah, it is.
03:58Let me check where I end up.
04:04Oh my god.
04:05Yeah, the guns are still in here.
04:08It's tight though.
04:10I think it's a howitzer.
04:15Here you can see two howitzers.
04:1775mm guns, model 1933, developed by the French army industry in the interwar period between WWI and WWII.
04:26The gun was designed to fire a variety of shells for different purposes.
04:30It had a maximum range of around 12 kilometer .
04:35At the beginning of WWII this gun was extensively used by the French army,
04:40but was already becoming outdated compared to artillery from other countries.
04:49No clue what the use of the pedal is, but there's a pedal.
04:54You can hear a floor below, something is going on.
05:00Really epic.
05:07Time to go back down.
05:11Careful with the floor.
05:19Here's another floor.
05:20This is the tank for the liquid cooling of the cannon.
05:29Look at all the tools here.
05:31Especially the ones on the left side.
05:33These numbers are super cool.
05:36Oh, it's this here.
05:37Yeah, this is the underside of the system.
05:41Cool.
05:43Well, you see the guns are just small guns, but when you see the whole system behind it, it's huge.
05:48It is huge.
05:49Three levels.
05:50Three levels.
05:50Three levels.
06:00Two.
06:02Three.
06:03Two.
06:05Two.
06:06Three.
06:10Four.
06:11One.
06:17One.
06:19Four.
06:20One.
06:20One.
06:4230 meters down.
06:46It can't be healthy.
06:50It's not the end, it's just a plate.
06:52Is there only one elevator?
06:54No, to every block there is one elevator.
06:56Okay.
06:57So there are like 14 elevators in here.
07:00Crazy.
07:01Nice system here as well, it's like a slide for goods, I think.
07:05It's for the used chants.
07:06Ah, the used ones, yeah.
07:08Just go down.
07:09Yeah.
07:11For little babies it will be optional, you have to go down here.
07:22Switch rules.
07:24Air ventilation.
07:27Here you go out of the block.
07:29This is perhaps where the ammunition was stored.
07:32It's pretty cool.
07:33It is.
07:34It's like a prison.
07:35It looks like heaven.
07:37For us it is.
07:38If there is a heaven, it looks like this.
07:43Eternal exploration.
07:44Yeah.
07:44Look at these tunnels.
07:45Whoa.
07:46Cool.
07:49It's for ammunition.
07:50Ammunition, right?
07:51Yeah, yeah.
07:51Ammunition here.
07:52Still looks pretty pristine.
07:54Yeah.
07:55No tags.
07:56Not so damp.
07:57Oh, cool.
07:57Here you see the whole railing system.
08:00Ah, to take it out.
08:01Yeah.
08:02Made in Mulhouse.
08:05Germany.
08:06It's in the region, right?
08:07Yeah.
08:08Is there a train track here?
08:10No.
08:11Not yet.
08:11Not yet.
08:21All ammunition.
08:22Gone.
08:39Yes.
08:41Random in the corridor.
08:43Yeah, indeed.
08:49Cool, these doors.
08:51Huge.
09:06For the elevator, I guess.
09:08Yeah.
09:08The engine as well.
09:10It's tight there, man.
09:17Nice.
09:1930 meters up again.
09:21Oh, there is a system again.
09:24Oh, another one.
09:31The same one, actually.
09:33Impressive, man.
09:34The size of those things.
09:46Let's go.
09:48Here are the barracks.
09:51Pretty uncomfortable rooms.
09:53Almost no space to walk.
09:58Yeah, so one floor below there was a manual crank for the air filter.
10:04Yeah, yeah.
10:04There's always a backup, isn't it?
10:10It's again a similar system.
10:17Wow.
10:19Very cool.
10:20But this is just for the right aiming.
10:23I mean...
10:26Is there a ladder going up?
10:27I can't see it.
10:29I think...
10:30Perhaps this was the one.
10:31Yeah, one has been torn off.
10:46At least 50 years of abandonment.
10:49But this was taken over by the Germans, isn't it?
10:52It was.
10:52Yeah.
10:52During the Second World War, yeah.
10:54And after that, it got repaired.
10:57But then again, it got abandoned again because the corridors were damaged.
11:02We will see it soon, I guess.
11:03Yeah, because of the soil, right?
11:04The soil, yeah.
11:05It goes up.
11:05It looks like there was a big bombing, but it was just water.
11:08Jesus Christ, eh?
11:10Oh, wow.
11:13Oh, oh shit.
11:14Did he flew out?
11:16Ended up in here.
11:17Pretty cool.
11:19Two seats.
11:23Even with some textile on it.
11:25To make it a little bit more comfortable.
11:28It's really tight in here.
11:34Wow.
11:36And here you can look outside.
11:43Look how wobbly this is.
11:46Lots of bad shit, which we just saw.
11:49Oh, this still works.
11:53Oh, this is for the chair.
11:55It's connected to the chair.
11:57We go back down to see other parts of the bunker.
12:01With these doors, you can see you're in a block.
12:03Block.
12:04Block.
12:04Block.
12:05Block 11.
12:08So, this is not even the main corridor.
12:10No.
12:12This is the side corridor, which leads to the block.
12:17I think here will be the main line.
12:27Jesus Christ, eh?
12:29I wonder how many stairs we want.
12:31Ridiculous.
12:32Turning off the camera.
12:33Let's take it too long.
12:35Whew.
12:36This should be the main line here.
12:38Oh, look what this looks like.
12:39The whole flooring is bulged.
12:41Yeah, it's coming up.
12:42Oh, my God.
12:43Looks really post-apocalyptic.
12:45Yeah.
12:45Looks like the one in Taiwan.
12:47True.
12:48With the earthquake damage.
12:49True.
12:54It's crazy.
12:55So, the cannons are still intact.
12:57And here it's totally ransacked.
13:00Oh, my God.
13:01I think everything is on collapsing danger here.
13:03Yeah, just don't say that too often.
13:07You can still smell the burned stuff.
13:09Yeah.
13:11It's a few yearly incomes.
13:13Yeah.
13:13We've got stone in here.
13:16I think we have to keep left.
13:19Imagine sitting here and don't see sunlight for three months.
13:27Block seven.
13:30An elevator.
13:31What's left of it?
13:34The whole corridor is wrecked.
13:41Yeah, I can see it too.
13:46Apparently it was already a big problem when they built it.
13:49I know, I've read it in the article.
13:52From 1938, part of the structural work had to be redone.
13:55Due to damage already caused by anhydride outbreaks.
13:59Which swells in the presence of water.
14:05I can see it.
14:05Entering block one.
14:07Two big rusty doors.
14:10Looking for the staircase.
14:14Really creepy looking elevator.
14:17It is.
14:17It is.
14:18No, this is that end.
14:19Okay.
14:20I'll come back.
14:2230 meters up again.
14:24Bye-bye.
14:25See you in 5 minutes.
14:29Made it up.
14:30Didn't feel like 30 meters.
14:32No, this one is not that long as the other one.
14:36Yeah.
14:38Maybe some cannons.
14:41Oh.
14:42Oh.
14:43Oh yeah.
14:46A bit different, right?
14:49Remember?
14:50And the other one.
14:52Yeah.
14:53We had a break here.
14:54I know.
14:54We walked here.
15:14Big ones.
15:15Yeah.
15:16Oh my god.
15:17How high is the ceiling here?
15:19I would say 3 meters.
15:20Yeah.
15:21Three of them.
15:28I thought they would be smaller, man.
15:31They are huge.
15:34It's even on ground level as well, right?
15:36Yeah, this goes to outside somewhere.
15:39I can see the lights coming in, I guess.
15:40And here, look at the storage where all the shelves were stored.
15:43Yeah, indeed.
15:44Crazy, eh?
15:49The chair for the guy in charge.
15:541955.
15:56After the war, the bunker was repaired and guns were occasionally checked and maintained.
16:15It's a nice area.
16:16We have a little break.
16:17We're gonna eat some sausages.
16:20Knackworste.
16:20They don't know it in English.
16:22Some kind of hot dog.
16:30Yeah.
16:31As far as I know, they took some guns out.
16:33Like the mortars.
16:34For museums.
16:35Ah, legally.
16:36Legally.
16:37Yeah, legally, yeah.
16:38When you drive south over the Route du Soleil, you see some signs next to the road.
16:44You always have these promotions.
16:46Oh yeah, the brown ones, right?
16:49There's also, I forgot the name.
16:51Hakenberg.
16:52That one is close here.
16:54That's it, yeah.
16:54Yeah, that's the most famous one and the biggest one too.
16:58I would like to visit it.
16:59Me too.
17:06Just a few beds.
17:08Let's see what's down here.
17:15Look at all the mosquitoes on the wall.
17:26It's an emergency exit.
17:28Escape hatch.
17:31And here you can see the entrance.
17:33It's filled with soil.
17:36It's not that old, I guess.
17:38This little window has a view on the emergency exit.
17:44Open.
17:48Cool.
17:49It's crazy.
17:50Each block had its own filter system.
17:55Back on the ground floor.
17:57The ground floor.
17:59Yeah.
17:59The ground Maginot floor.
18:02The ground is dirty.
18:14It's a stop sign for the cards.
18:16Yeah, indeed.
18:17So it couldn't crash to the wall.
18:19It's a roadblock.
18:20Yeah.
18:28Grungy.
18:29That's the right word.
18:30Yeah, it would be crusty.
18:33A few beds.
18:34Okay, going out of the block.
18:36One more than one.
18:37Yeah.
18:39Here is the main, I guess.
18:47Next block.
18:49Block 5.
18:52Headrooms.
19:02It's crazy.
19:03One bunker gets water inside it and the other not that much.
19:09Okay.
19:10Up.
19:11Yep.
19:12Up.
19:22Another one.
19:36Smaller one, huh?
19:37This one.
19:40Here you can see a little bit how big these cannons are.
19:44The whole system, I mean.
19:59There's where the ammunition got up.
20:01The plates are gone.
20:03I have to climb to the other side and then go up.
20:17I climb up the turret where another surprise awaits.
20:21Oh, shit.
20:23Another bad.
20:28It's impossible to climb here with my camera.
20:32Oh, this is nice.
20:34So this would open and then they would shoot the mortars.
20:47The tubes will remind me of those on a warship.
21:14Look at this.
21:15This is cool.
21:30We're back down, I'm gonna walk to the front side of the bunker.
21:37It's crazy that the whole park has been set on fire.
21:40Oh, yeah. Crazy. Because of the lazy copper thieves.
21:45They burn everything and then it's easy to get copper.
21:52But this thing was in use after the Second World War by the French army or something?
21:58Yes, but not for long.
21:59You can see because of the ground. So it got decommissioned pretty quickly.
22:03Till the early 50s?
22:04I don't know exactly. I think yours were until the 70s.
22:09Looks like we're heading into a block here.
22:11The Maginot line turned out to be obsolete for modern warfare.
22:14The structure was maintained by a small team until the 1970s before being abandoned.
22:20It's another one.
22:26It's like more than a meter.
22:28Yeah, I guess too. Crazy.
22:31Looks like it expanded.
22:33Yeah.
22:34What is hips? I don't know the word.
22:36This might be the stuff. This is under the flooring.
22:40This kind of stuff. There came water in it.
22:43Expanded.
22:43Expanded.
22:45Oh, here are also guys sitting here all day on the ride.
22:57Ridiculous.
22:58Look what happened with the floor.
23:03Oh, I can almost touch the ceiling.
23:09I think it's up for at least a meter.
23:13Yeah, at least.
23:151.5 at the top.
23:17Yeah.
23:19I haven't seen this before in any other bunker.
23:24Crazy.
23:25Pretty cool.
23:26I thought it would be bad, but not this bad.
23:28It's extreme.
23:32Now I understand why they closed it.
23:36My god.
23:38Yeah, crazy.
23:39The anhydride swells in the presence of water and causes the floor to rise.
23:44This is particularly visible at the part where we are right now.
23:48The gallery was rebuilt after the war due it's uprising.
23:51But that didn't fix the problem.
23:52Now it goes down again.
23:54I always thought when you see these pictures I thought it was bombed or something.
23:59Like some forts in Belgium.
24:03Oh, it's a big one.
24:05Oh, you can see exactly the shape of those crates.
24:08Yeah.
24:10Like this.
24:10This is a crate.
24:12K-Stop push it.
24:16You can give a tour on these.
24:18The little train depot.
24:23Is there something left?
24:26Definitely a good part here.
24:28Oh, yeah.
24:30Nice.
24:31I think it's a repair factory.
24:33Here they can go under it.
24:35Yeah.
24:38I just wanted to say, man.
24:40When I'm filming you it feels like I'm a Zaljava again.
24:44It's a wide area.
24:46Yeah.
24:46Yeah.
24:47But still, Zaljava was much larger than this one.
24:50Great for planes of course.
24:52Great.
25:00This was the biggest entrance for the ammunition.
25:03Oh, that's the soil.
25:06Can they still go through?
25:07Yeah, if you really want to do it for us.
25:09It's a tiny entrance.
25:11It's difficult.
25:13As you can see, they break it.
25:15Then they put stones on it.
25:17And then they put soil over it.
25:20This was the first line of defense.
25:23As you noticed, each block has protection.
25:27The last resort.
25:28Yeah.
25:31Okay.
25:36Key keys.
25:39Oh, here also.
25:43So we have left, we have the barracks and the generating station.
25:47The power station.
25:49And then we've seen most of it.
25:51Yeah.
25:54Here's another one.
25:55Yeah, yeah.
25:56I like it.
25:58Oh, shit.
26:00I like it.
26:05It's also a sick alley.
26:07It's just a cable.
26:08Yeah, yeah.
26:09Cable.
26:10Well, they had an external power source.
26:13And the generators were just in case of a blackout.
26:23Nice switch.
26:24For the carts.
26:26Flip the lever, man.
26:27Come on.
26:28Oh.
26:29Opa.
26:32Damn.
26:39Seems like another long big corridor here.
26:50This is also ammunition storage when you see all the boxes.
26:54Yeah.
26:54The M1 warehouse was the biggest storage for ammunition.
26:57After being abandoned, this part has been converted for its use as a mushroom farm.
27:06Yeah, it's funny, it looks like a medieval fort.
27:08Yeah, it is.
27:09Yeah, it is.
27:10Yeah.
27:10Maybe it's unfinished, I don't know.
27:12No.
27:13It's a totally different vibe.
27:15It is.
27:15The sound is better.
27:19Yeah.
27:19Not echoing.
27:20Yeah.
27:22So we need to...
27:23Left.
27:24Left.
27:33A big-ass steel door before you go into the barracks.
27:37This blast door protected the barracks in case of an explosion in the warehouse.
28:04Oh my god, is this what is left?
28:07This were the AC-DC converters.
28:09Because the motors and trains in these bunkers were DC type motors.
28:14Yes.
28:16Look at these pipes.
28:17Uh-huh.
28:18What do you think it's for?
28:19Oh, it's urinal rod.
28:21Ah, smartass.
28:23Here you have the answer.
28:24We see.
28:25Normally they say latrine.
28:26Yeah.
28:27Pretty modern.
28:30All broken, of course.
28:33Pretty nice.
28:35Oh, it's painted on the door.
28:39Yeah, indeed.
28:40Cool.
28:42Ah, wine distribution.
28:44Yeah, indeed.
28:45Yeah.
28:45Oh, I read something about it.
28:47They had their own wine cellar in here.
28:49Indeed.
28:49This could be the wine cellar.
28:51Yeah, correct.
28:52What's left of it.
28:53Yeah.
29:12I wonder where the power station is then.
29:15It has to be somewhere here.
29:16It has to be in this area.
29:17It's like an oven.
29:19The whole ground is good here.
29:21Yeah, good.
29:24Messed up.
29:28I can smell it.
29:30I can smell it.
29:37It's one of the smallest ones I've ever seen.
29:40It's so small, right?
29:41And it has a number too.
29:43So perhaps.
29:44There should be 4 at least.
29:45Of these.
29:46Maybe in the left and this one.
29:49Yeah.
29:50But they really, really damage those things.
29:53Yeah.
29:54Well luckily there's another video coming up.
29:57Of one with a pristine power station.
30:09Two on the left and two on the right.
30:20Super messy.
30:21Yeah.
30:22Yeah.
30:23But still.
30:23Nice.
30:24But still.
30:32There.
30:45It's a secret.
30:46It's a secret.
30:46It looks good.
30:47Yeah.
30:48I love you.
30:50I love you.
30:52It looks good.
30:53It looks good.
30:54It looks good.
31:00Oh yeah this is like oil. 50,000 liters.
31:08I've been in another one it was like 2 times 18,000 liters but hey there were at least 800
31:13people inside here.
31:14Oh yeah 47,000 liters. 63,000 liters.
31:19That's even more. Holy shit.
31:36The dismantle room.
31:39After the fall of France the bunker received the order for surrender which took place on July 4th 1940.
31:45During the German occupation a part of the bunker was transformed into an underground factory with offices.
31:51That's why we don't see the original barracks.
31:54Check this guys. Another coito where the floor came up.
31:57Oh my god.
32:05Just another example.
32:0999 again.
32:11Yeah, 1999.
32:13We saw the most interesting parts of the bunker and only missed a few blocks where the guns have been
32:18taken out.
32:19So it's time to head back outside after being underground for many hours.
32:26Yeah.
32:28I don't have to gain weight because I wouldn't fit anymore.
32:32And don't exercise.
32:33A stray doesn't fit you see I have to.
32:37Deadass.
32:39Alright we made it out.
32:44Great way to hunt the episode.
32:45He invited me for dinner.
32:49With some nice soup.
32:52Mmm.
