00:13I
00:14I love this neighborhood. Oh, it's so cute. Right. Whilst you're all enjoying your food. Shall I read the dossier?
00:22Okay, I hear a picture
00:25Luther
00:27night Deborah
00:28Oh
00:29Devoted father of two. Yeah, right to Marin 16 and Esme 13. Oh, I love their name
00:35Did you know that we are more closely related to a deer than the deer is to a kangaroo?
00:43What?
00:45YouTube
00:47He's an iPad kid. You're like if an iPad kid was like 50. Yeah
00:51His wife Nicole is studying law at the American University
00:55And her scholarship brought their family to Washington two years ago. What a smarty pan
01:02When I met Michael like 10 minutes after I met him I said have you ever thought about being a
01:08teacher?
01:10In his presence you just can tell Mike teaches 11th and 12th grade history at a charter school
01:15Hi, Miss Lancaster
01:17Good morning, Mr. Devereaux. How are you?
01:20How was your summer?
01:21However, his journey to the classroom is not quite conventional. Oh, I spent about 15 years as a pastor
01:28And I just started a midlife career change and then wound up here
01:34Mike became disillusioned with religion interesting
01:37Wow
01:37He stepped down as a pastor and it meant that he lost his community
01:41Hi, Miss Anderson. Did you have a good summer?
01:44I did
01:44Good good to see you
01:45And by all accounts being a high school teacher isn't easy. Yeah, duh, of course it's not
01:50Sometimes when you're a teacher and you're in a school
01:52You feel like the world is right here in this building because all the stuff they're dealing with outside of
01:56the class
01:57And they're bringing that back into the classroom in this environment like that that it's so hard. It's so hard
02:05This year's class marks a major milestone for DPA. They are the school's first graduating class. Whoa
02:12Sadly this class is well known in the DC area because they lost four students to gun violence in only
02:1710 months
02:19Four people in 10 months. Yeah
02:21America, this is what we're living in right now
02:24That's so much for like for anybody to go through before you like young people to wrap your it's like
02:28it's so wrong
02:30Despite the heavy tragedy each of the graduating students was accepted to college and many with scholarships
02:38Mike played a crucial role in helping them get there
02:41Mike Deverell has incredibly high expectations for our scholars in both academics and character
02:49He really listens to create a known love respected community
02:53That's with our scholars with our staff with our families. He is empathy
02:59His wife Nicole notices that he works hard to ensure that everyone around him is seen and he's the first
03:04to admit
03:05He doesn't have all the answers, but what he does have is a deep commitment to his students
03:09It's been a really hard couple years
03:12Partly because i'm in a new career and a new school and a new city with a new demographic
03:18There's a feeling of like something's got to give as much as I want to be the best husband and
03:23parent I can be
03:24I really want to be the best teacher I can be
03:27Michael's from southern california and he has this very chill exterior
03:32Like you know, he's got that so cal vibe, but I think when you're a helper
03:37It's really really easy to lose yourself in what you're giving to other people and
03:45Not take care of yourself
03:47Teachers feel the strain of the curriculum changes and the budgets and the chaotic classrooms
03:52Like students each fall it takes willpower for teachers to start yet another school year. I don't think I could
03:58do it
03:58He's at a breaking point. Yeah, he's been through so much queer eye classic. He helps everybody else, but doesn't
04:04take time to help himself
04:05Yeah, why do you think he could use some queer eye love?
04:10So you've seen them right
04:15When I look at him, he just looks like jack nicholson from wolf the kids call him jesus hair
04:23Mrs gabbrook he'll come to class with a shirt and some jeans and some shoes and call it a day
04:28It's like he went in his closet jumped into some clothes and was like boom just out for the day
04:33I've been doing a high black sock for good 10 15 years
04:38Sometimes white mix it up
04:41These are my work shirts like this one
04:45Work shirts at the end of the week to celebrate their first graduating class dpa is throwing a college send
04:51-off party
04:52That's big
04:53His friends at the dpa hope that the fab 5 will help spruce mike up and help him see the
05:00difference that he's made at their school
05:01So he'll be able to stay here for many years to come
05:03I really hope so too. So do we want to hear the mission. Yes
05:08Our mission is to help this ex-pastor practice what he preaches
05:12Yeah
05:14I like that
05:14You look nice
05:32Ready guys?
05:34Let's go back to school
05:36We have arrived
05:38Get to class you're gonna be late for class
05:40Hey can't hear you d
05:43Oh, I just have to run to my locker really quick
05:48Wait, where is everyone? Why is it so quiet?
05:54Oh because it's summer
05:56But aren't teachers usually here in the summer?
05:58Seeing a school during the summer with no students and it reminds me of like a zombie movie
06:02Where is everybody? I'm kind of scared. It feels a little eerie
06:07Do you think I would teach us?
06:09Of school
06:12Where do you think you're going?
06:14Are we already getting detention?
06:16Welcome to digital time
06:19How are you?
06:21Can you take us to see mike?
06:23Let's train these teachers honey
06:26Teaching is the best job in the world and it is the hardest job in the world
06:33Yeah
06:35Hi
06:35Yeah
06:41Are you mike?
06:43Yeah
06:43I don't know
06:44Okay
06:44I knew that you were mike
06:45I figured
06:47Seriously, how'd you know?
06:48I'm about to be here
06:49Hi mike
06:50Nice to meet you
06:51Oh, I'm sorry
06:51Yeah, yeah
06:52Nice to meet you
06:53Nice to meet you
06:54Bye, bye
06:54Nice to meet you
06:55Hello, but I used to meet you
06:57I just wrote boobies with the calculator
07:00I love school
07:02Principal Mache
07:03What do we need to know about this Jack Black look-a-like over here?
07:07Yup
07:07Yup
07:08Yup
07:10He might need some advice on the black socks and sneakers
07:14Come on now
07:14Come on
07:15Come on
07:16I like that shoe
07:17As the kids say, no shade
07:19That's right
07:19That's right
07:20That's right
07:20That's it
07:21I have a question for you
07:22Have you always been this Rapunzel-y?
07:26Like this hair is stunning
07:27So my thing is
07:28I get my hair cut about once a year
07:30Oh, I love an annual haircut
07:32It's a matter of practicality
07:33I just cut it
07:34And then I let it grow
07:35Yes
07:35And I don't actually have a beard
07:37I just don't shave
07:38Oh
07:40I love mike's hair
07:41And I am inspired by making mike into like a lovable villain
07:45Like I want french villain
07:46Like I want to like flat iron his hair
07:48Tuck his
07:49And then tuck it behind his ears
07:50And put some pomade on there
07:52I want mike to look like his name is Jacques
07:55What you need to know
07:56He's stunning
07:58Stunning
07:58Passionate
07:59Passionate
08:00Wow
08:01Mike is charming
08:03Yes
08:05He's one of the people I can say he's always positive
08:07That's beautiful
08:08That's so nice
08:09What else?
08:10Empathetic
08:12He doesn't need to change at all
08:15Why are we here?
08:18Okay
08:19Mike, you're already getting choked up
08:20What's going on?
08:22Ooh, don't ask me
08:24That makes it worse
08:27You all give so much
08:28And I think it's time that we pour back in
08:30Sure
08:30Like this
08:31But I want to pour back into them
08:34But by pouring into you
08:35It overflows to everyone else
08:37You'll pay it forward
08:38Yeah
08:39Stop crying, Josh
08:44I'm just thrilled that I'm not the only one crying for once
08:48And after you get the extensions that I'm going to give you
08:53Down to the butt
08:54Down to the butt
08:55Down to the butt
08:55Yeah, I want 22
08:56Oh my goodness
08:59We're going
09:02Yeah
09:03Mike, is your classroom down this way?
09:06Upstairs actually
09:07Yours upstairs
09:07Yeah
09:08Every year as our student body grows
09:11More and more of the space gets turned into classrooms
09:13This school's gorgeous
09:15This is the one space we can bring our whole school community together
09:19And that's where everyone's really tight
09:21Okay
09:22But it also has its struggles
09:25Where do the teachers hang out at?
09:28Can we see?
09:28Yeah
09:29Okay
09:29Great, let's go here
09:31This is what was left
09:33Work with what you have
09:34No judgment
09:35This is the space
09:37No, it's not
09:38This is the space
09:39This is not your space
09:41For all the teachers
09:42This is the same space
09:43We come in here to get coffee
09:45A couple people might eat at the table
09:47Yes
09:48And then you just go
09:49You go back to your room
09:50Is this said coffee station?
09:52That's the coffee station
09:54I'm worried that that coffee corner is going to make him cry
09:56Are you okay?
09:58Are you going to start crying?
10:00It's the solo cups, isn't it?
10:02It's the solo cups
10:02That's it
10:03That's what took Jer out
10:04Mike, if you and I can have just a couple of minutes
10:06Sure
10:06And chat
10:07Do you want us to leave?
10:08That was very nice
10:09I'll catch up with you
10:10Okay, you guys leave
10:10No, no, you too
10:11The best design assistant in the world
10:14Okay, okay
10:15So you're good
10:16I'm good
10:17I got a little excited
10:20What would be the best use of our time together?
10:24Uh
10:25I mean
10:27I'd love to give back to the teachers in the school
10:30To do something for them
10:34Wow
10:34Mike's desire
10:35Mike's desire to do something for these teachers
10:38I think is just a testament to who he is
10:41Ideally, what would you want to do for the school?
10:43I think the teacher lounge was like a big one
10:46Yeah
10:46Yeah
10:47Maybe two coffee makers instead of one
10:50I think that sounds fair
10:51And maybe throw that one away
10:53It's a minimal ask
10:54Yes
10:55One of the current classrooms was our teacher lounge last year
10:58No
10:58And we were in there all the time commiserating
11:01About whatever experiences we were having
11:03And you know when you're doing like physical labor
11:05Your muscles are tired but your brain is fine
11:07And in this job your muscles are fine but your brain is worn out
11:12These teachers are navigating such intense circumstances
11:17The space for them is so important
11:19Are you able to leave it here before you take it home?
11:22Yeah, so I love my kids
11:24And so leaving here and going home to them
11:27It feels warm and it feels kind and loving
11:31And it feels peaceful
11:32Listening to Mike talk about the space that he has with his family
11:37It's a soft place for him to land
11:40Everything that he expresses with the way he feels
11:42When he walks through the door at his home
11:44Is what I want to bring to this school
11:46This is not a place to like refill your cup
11:50Right
11:51Should we go find him?
11:52Let's do it
11:52Okay
11:52All right
11:53Up to you
11:55So much stuff
12:00So this is the game room for kids
12:03Okay
12:04Because DPA is a computer science focused school
12:07Oh my god, is that a PlayStation?
12:09Yeah, I know
12:11There's an entire room right now dedicated to gaming
12:15Because the kids like to game
12:17But not a space for the teachers
12:20We gotta fix it
12:24This is for you
12:26Okay
12:27It's Mike's day, it's Mike's day
12:29Beginning of the year, it's the first day
12:31It's Mike's day, it's Mike's day
12:34Beginning of the year, it's the first day
12:37JB and I need to stay back
12:39And these three yahoos are about to take you
12:41All right
12:42So that we can get this week started
12:43That's right
12:44Okay, we take care of them
12:44We are yahoos
12:45We're gonna take care of him
12:46We are
12:46Come on, Mike, let's go
12:48Don't be shy
12:48Don't be shy
12:48Take care of him
12:49Bye
12:50Bye
12:50Bye
12:50Bye
12:51We gotta get to work
12:53We gotta get to work
12:54We gotta get to work
12:57So we're going to your home which is
12:59Is it in DC proper?
13:01Yeah
13:01Okay
13:01A little squirrel told me
13:03You in a past life were a pastor
13:05I was, yeah
13:06I was pastoring in New York
13:10And I was working at a school while also pastoring
13:13And I loved it
13:14And so, you know, a number of factors came together
13:16Which helped me make a decision
13:18Like I am going to stop being a pastor now
13:20And then start pursuing teaching
13:22And once I did that
13:24It like freed me to be
13:26I think more who I really am
13:29Because when you're a pastor
13:31You always feel a pressure to be on
13:33Okay
13:34You know, be the exemplar
13:35I grew up in a very religious church
13:37I grew up and I went to this like
13:39Really super christian sports camp every summer
13:41Okay
13:41I get so many, you know, really
13:44Intense christians on social media
13:46That will, you know, look at me in a dress
13:48And say something to the effect of like
13:49I can't believe like this is what we've normalized
13:51But I think Jesus and his teachings would be like
13:55It's actually like the kids not having food
13:56It's the gun violence that we've normalized that
13:59And that's just like
13:59Oh, a sad thing that happened on the news
14:01And you guys are making a direct impact
14:03In the lives of kids
14:04And so you're really doing like
14:06That community work with what you're doing now
14:08And so I think that's beautiful for speaking your truth
14:10You're doing God's work without what to do
14:12That's what I mean
14:13Do you feel like you're closer to your sense of purpose
14:17With what you do now?
14:18Yeah, that's a good way to say it
14:20I feel it's a more tangible effect
14:23Yeah
14:23You know, it's like when you're building a house
14:25You know, like the change is evident before you
14:28And you can be proud of every step of the way
14:30It's sort of like that a little bit more with young people, I think
14:33Yeah
14:34If they're more impressionable
14:35Yeah, yeah
14:36I'm so excited to meet your fam, honey
14:39Yeah
14:40Hello
14:42Hi, Phoebe
14:43Hi, Phoebe
14:44Oh
14:44Hi
14:45Hi
14:46Hi
14:46Hi
14:47Hi
14:47Hi, Phoebe
14:48I'm so excited to meet you
14:48I'm so excited to meet you
14:51Nice to meet you
14:54This is such beautiful light and such gorgeous space
14:57I think, I think, yeah
14:58You guys are nice
14:59Lovely apartment
15:01Thank you
15:01Give us a real real
15:02Because your mom's gonna be nice
15:03But teenagers will always be honest
15:05What does your dad need help with?
15:07To make him less than a queen
15:08Oh, okay
15:10I didn't say roast him
15:11Yeah
15:13We have a, we have a roasting relationship
15:15They do have a roasting
15:16Don't worry, I give it back to us
15:18Now, hallelujah, hallelujah
15:19Okay, I've called in reinforcements
15:21Let's do this
15:23Everybody grab a
15:26I've never been so happy to see a beanbag leave in my life
15:30My sister is a teacher
15:31And I have watched her show up
15:34With this tremendous amount of dedication to children
15:37Don't tell any of the kids that I did this, all right?
15:40I don't need anybody coming after me
15:42It is a profession that is wildly undervalued
15:46Is dangerous at times
15:48Good job, good job
15:50Good job, good job
15:51And to be able to do something for Mike
15:54For other teachers is really important to me
15:57To give back and say thank you
16:00Thank you so much
16:01Thank you
16:01Thank you
16:02Thank you
16:03If you want something done
16:04Turns out you just need 20 teachers
16:06Unbelievable
16:07So at 6 in the morning
16:09I, right into the shower
16:11You get right in
16:11Straight in
16:12Yes
16:12Come out, dry off
16:14Yep
16:16Brush my hair
16:17Then brush my teeth
16:18And that's it
16:19It is really just kind of giving soap
16:21It's more about cleanliness
16:23Soap
16:24Than nurture
16:25Yes
16:26Well, you know the thing with like men's beauty
16:28It's like the smallest tweaks make the biggest difference
16:30And when you take that action of like kind of taking care of yourself
16:33It makes you feel different
16:34It makes you feel a little better
16:35Sure
16:36It can create little ripple effects in your life
16:38So I'm excited for us to explore that
16:39A little hyaluronic acid
16:41Yeah
16:41You know what hyaluronic acid is
16:43We're already winning
16:44Okay
16:44We got a lot of t-shirts
16:46The guy likes a white tee
16:48Wonderful
16:48Okay, lots of good things happening here
16:51Who are we?
16:52A matcha family
16:53If you're wondering where all your plaid went, America
16:57America, your plaid went here
16:59Sounds like there's a lot of teacher burnout
17:01Mm-hmm
17:02Teaching in general is a burnout
17:03But teaching even here is more because we're founding
17:07We're building and so we expect a lot of our team
17:11So what do you all do to like have some fun?
17:14We try to plan adult wellness days
17:16We check in with each other every single day
17:19So if you're having a good day, you can have a good day
17:21If you're having a bad day, it's okay to tell your teammates
17:24We've done some professional development where it's like
17:27You know a cookout in the back in the backyard
17:29Or we've actually done kickball with the staff
17:32But we've gotten away from it a little bit
17:34And the days are short
17:36And so how do you pack it all in?
17:38So finding some time to have that fun
17:40Yes
17:40Is important
17:41Yes
17:41Is this your work?
17:43Who keeps it so organized?
17:45I'm more the organized person
17:46Oh, it makes me so happy
17:48I've not seen a closet like this other than my own
17:51Oh wow
17:52In, if ever
17:54This is your underwear
17:55This man, straight man, has folded his underwear
17:59Oh yeah
18:00And none of it's ripped
18:01I don't even fold my underwear
18:03I have an underwear drawer
18:04But I just throw my underwear into it
18:06This man is so type A
18:09Just my type
18:10So it's just a khaki pan
18:12A chino
18:12Yeah
18:13Okay
18:13Is that it?
18:14Like that's what you live in?
18:15Yeah
18:15A lot of tees, a lot of branded tees
18:18Do you have a uniform as such that you wear
18:21I know you don't actually have a uniform uniform
18:22But your uniform is t-shirt
18:24Are you short?
18:25Yeah, yeah, yeah
18:25So it's shirts like these
18:27You know, DPA shirts
18:28Okay, okay
18:29Is that the case for the teaching staff in general?
18:32Some of my good friends there are amazing dressers
18:35Yeah
18:35Do you care about clothes?
18:37And if you don't, you can be honest
18:38Do you care?
18:38No, I do care
18:39But well, only some things fit
18:41You know, optimally
18:43Yeah
18:44And it just ends up being like more trouble than it's worth
18:46But I would love for your wardrobe to look a little more sophisticated
18:49Potentially
18:50Would be nice to dress up just a little
18:51It would
18:52I mean, honestly, I trust you completely
18:53Good
18:54You're
18:55I love all you guys
18:56Thank you
18:56But I have really most
18:58I've enjoyed you the most
18:59Oh, yes
19:00I didn't say that
19:02Look at that
19:03Oh
19:19So Nicole tells me that she's the one who cooks for the most part
19:23She is
19:24Accurate statement
19:25That's an accurate statement
19:26Yeah
19:26Yeah
19:26Why is that?
19:28It's time effort
19:29It's a smaller value for me
19:31What do you mean?
19:32In terms of like the time and energy to cook a meal
19:35Gotcha
19:36So you don't take joy in cooking necessarily?
19:38It's a weird thing
19:39Like when I'm doing it, I really enjoy it
19:41Yeah
19:42I grew up cooking fish probably three times a week with my dad
19:46And so I'm pretty comfortable I should say at like basic elements
19:49Uh-huh
19:50Is there anything that you like want to learn just taking advantage of this time that we have together?
19:55Hey Nicole
19:56Is it
19:57Is there something in the kitchen that I want to learn in terms of cooking?
20:00I can't
20:01I can't
20:01I love that he's asking you
20:03No, what would bless Nicole the most is if I just just decided on my own
20:07I'm gonna cook dinner wouldn't even tell her
20:10Can I
20:11Just had dinner ready
20:11Can I say something so wild?
20:14Yeah
20:14You have the freedom to do that whenever you want
20:16It's true
20:17As I say to my husband if I know it's in a time you should know it's in a time
20:21Yeah
20:21Tana's channeling everything I've ever said
20:25Now ladies we're going to take very good care of your dad
20:27Okay
20:28As I say
20:29Yeah I'm going to hold to a family hug
20:32The next time you see him he's going to look like Keanu Reeves
20:35Ah
20:35All right Phoebe
20:37You're right
20:37Oh my god
20:38All right
20:38See you later
20:39The best in me bring joy
20:43Every day of your life
20:45Spread love
20:47Every day of your life
20:49Give praise
20:52Every day of your life
20:54My goal this week is to create a space that provides just an ounce of the beauty
21:02that these teachers provide these kids every day
21:06Mike is one of those people we need him right now being a teacher is no joke and I feel
21:12like I have a
21:12personal responsibility to make sure that he keeps going and gets refueled and is really taking care of himself
21:18Listen I couldn't be somebody teacher because your little child come in my classroom doing some stuff
21:23I'm gonna cuss him out but these teachers do not they hold it all in and sometimes they need a
21:28space to release
21:31I want Mike to walk into the school at the start of the new year for the kids to be
21:35like oh
21:37Mike got his ish together
21:40Mike is a great guy but what if I could be Mike's teacher and teach him how beauty and self
21:46-care could
21:47just be a short routine just some time for him to connect with himself before he has to go into
21:52the
21:52battle of the high school teaching all the kids or he's going to what burn out
22:23I want to know first and foremost why my segment is the one you most excited about
22:28so I've seen a number of episodes over the years yeah I think I just always felt like
22:32your ability to like assess someone yeah and sort of serve them yeah yeah all right I love that okay
22:38that makes me happy yeah you when you speak you do this a lot do I yeah you stroke it
22:44nice it's my
22:45baby it's my baby everyone I help does something funny with their hands and it's usually around here
22:51and I know exactly what it is we all do it we're self-conscious I think that as I've gotten
22:55older
22:56my concerns have switched much more to health than self-conscious yes so I am much more concerned
23:02about longevity and gosh you guys get me to tear up every time I'm sorry longevity and like and being
23:10there for my kids I've got two kids also mine are much younger than yours yeah and so I do
23:15love that
23:15your focus is on your kids yeah but if it means that you feel better in your skin I want
23:21to try and
23:21get you there also yeah and so I want to talk about layering things that could work for you
23:27and then look at things like blazers or outerwear that you could layer on that would dress up your
23:32look so even if you're wearing something more casual let's say a t-shirt and a pant simple simple
23:38right you could wear it to school you feel perfectly comfortable yeah however then throw on a jacket and
23:43you're ready for dinner you could wear the same sneakers you're wearing you could wear the same pants you're
23:47wearing we're just taking your look from day to night because again time is of the essence let's
23:51find quick swap outs yeah so are you seeing anything that you like maybe it's a mannequin
23:56yeah or even if it's something you hate like never I think it's fair to say I probably like everything
24:01in
24:01this store everything I've seen my job is done I'll see you all later thank you so much for having
24:06I mean I would be less likely to wear that pattern over there yeah those colors all right well the
24:11fact that you pretty much are gravitating towards everything that means we can just go into trying
24:15your first look if you'll trust me please I would like to try on a few things that maybe you
24:19haven't
24:19really explored before and maybe come up with something that works for the new version of you sure
24:24sound good sounds good okay Mike is dressed in a way that isn't so surprising I'm not mad about
24:30what he's wearing but I want him to have options in his closet that he can rock at school that
24:35make
24:36the student body gasp you ready yes I like this shirt jacket I'm so glad you do yeah okay thoughts
24:44what do you think of the colors I wouldn't naturally have put these colors together but yeah like seeing
24:49it on it feels stylish it feels it looks stylish it looks real looks intentional this jacket
24:54it's a hybrid between a blazer and a more casual jacket and so you can dress this up dress this
25:01down but I love it worn casually I'm gonna add one more thing I just want to give you this
25:07I'm gonna
25:07give you my wedding ring just to tie it just a tiny bit of something else yeah to add a
25:15little color
25:15so it looks even more dimensional this feels like a tan outfit it does feel like a tan outfit you
25:22know what
25:24you're gonna give me a really big head yeah I'm also self-conscious of my stomach and so I want
25:30to distract as much as possible sure with as many things as possible so no one's ever just looking
25:34just at this area so you can add a couple of things to distract go for it yeah should we
25:39try
25:40one more for fun sounds good right okay I'm gonna take my wedding ring back because I can't forget
25:44that my husband will kill me you ready I'm ready would you pop out for me
25:53anything love a casual look than you could not be happier you can give me the dirty dirty the shirt's
25:58a little small for me small as in short or small as in tight maybe both if I was if
26:04I'm wearing this
26:05then the tightness isn't so bad if I'm not wearing this then the tightness would feel uncomfortable you
26:09know Mr. Devereaux Mr. Devereaux the fact that you know that makes me so happy okay good I would like
26:17you to have two versions of shirts t-shirts please I would like you to have some that are slightly
26:22more
26:23fitted and some that are slightly looser the looser ones wear on their own it's going to make you feel
26:27comfortable you can't see anything that you don't want to see however if you're throwing a layer over
26:32it the last thing you need is bunchy bunchy you don't want a bunch of fabric moving around that
26:36makes it's not going to look good how do you feel about the link of the pants okay if you've
26:40got a
26:40really loose like lineny pant which this kind of is a linen it's so floppy that you don't want it
26:47to just hang you want it to hit your shoe so it has a nice movement to it so other
26:52than the length
26:54how does the pant feel to you it feels luxurious it feels like the bahamas imagine if you are in
27:02the
27:02bahamas for a moment and you need a shade will you pop those on all right oh man now we're
27:08talking
27:09i want you to do something for me pretend that it's the first day of school i want you to
27:13walk in
27:13as if yeah bitch i'm here can you give me that i always know when a hero walks around that
27:20corner
27:20towards me in an outfit that i put them in whether they're feeling it or not
27:26ah do you see the way he's walking that is so good even though it's giving bahamas vibe he is
27:35clearly feeling himself my daughters are making fun of me right now no they're not they're like that's
27:40our dad now i know exactly what i want in his closet you look fantastic you should live in shades
27:49i haven't seen you do this once well i feel a swagger i feel like the dude
28:02we do dodgeball baby
28:07being a teacher nowadays is a lot of pressure so i'm taking mike and these teachers to play dodgeball
28:13because i want them to release some stress and have some fun teachers need field trips too
28:19students are stressing you out bam oh life is stressing you out bam anthony yeah he might
28:26look tough but one bop and it's done i hope this goes better than roller skating
28:40we get the release form signed for dodgeball because it's about to go down
28:49and i hope that this moment teaches mike and the rest of these teachers is that physical activity can
29:08and help the heart and the mind.
29:21I love a sport with a ball.
29:24I know it's shocking,
29:24but you're about to see me giving some dodge ball realness.
29:33Okay, girl.
29:33Voila!
29:37I got out Mike.
29:38I didn't mean to.
29:40I got our hero out, accidentally.
29:42Oh, good for you.
29:43Poor Mike.
29:47Daniel!
29:48Get your cocky, get your ass shit.
29:51I might not have hand-eye coordination,
29:53but you know what I have?
29:54Ambition.
29:57Oh!
30:01Oh!
30:10No way!
30:11It's up to you!
30:13People are shocked that I can throw a ball.
30:20But I did do sports my whole life.
30:23Get him, get him, get him!
30:31Oh!
30:32Oh!
30:33Oh!
30:33Oh!
30:40Who knew Jeremiah was so athletic?
30:42I took one look at those quads,
30:44and I knew he was going to be a force to be reckoned with
30:46on the dodge ball court.
30:48That's how you release some stress.
30:49Yeah.
30:50Woo!
30:50Keep it moving, gentlemen.
30:52And let's bring it in.
30:53D.P.A.
31:07Oh, I love a glass wall.
31:09Right now there's actually no place for these teachers to come together.
31:13They're literally shoved into a supply cabinet with three bar stools.
31:19So we're moving the game room elsewhere so that we can give the teachers a bigger space.
31:23I can't believe I didn't get to meet your family.
31:26I know.
31:26Will you at some point?
31:27I hope so.
31:28Yeah.
31:29Well, this is technically against my own rules.
31:31Oh, my gosh.
31:31Wow.
31:32But you're a special case, okay?
31:34Wow.
31:34You're a special guy.
31:35You get special privileges.
31:36Okay.
31:36But look how far along it's come so far.
31:38It's incredible.
31:39I mean, right now it's a white box, but I promise it's gonna be.
31:42No, but, yeah, but I know.
31:44I'm gonna create a teacher's lounge for them to just relax and recover and bring them a sanctuary
31:52that they can kind of clock in and out of.
31:54I actually thought it would be fun today for us to do just, like, this little exercise.
31:59It could not be an easier task.
32:01Okay.
32:01That being said, nobody's worse at DIY than I am.
32:05Okay.
32:06Any opportunity he can have to put a little sweat equity into this space, I know he's gonna appreciate.
32:11There's few things that intimidate me more than anything like wallpaper.
32:16Wow, really?
32:17Yeah.
32:17Oh, my gosh.
32:18It's not gonna be perfect.
32:19Hold on.
32:20Hold on.
32:20Don't put it on.
32:21Don't stick it on yet.
32:22Hold on.
32:22But then it's gonna get stuck down there.
32:24Stop yelling at me.
32:26Okay?
32:28Now can I put it on?
32:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:30Okay.
32:32How was it for you listening to a room full of people talk about how great you are?
32:36It was uncomfortable.
32:37I could tell.
32:39What made you so emotional about it?
32:41We're just not wired to hear resounding praise from multiple people at one time.
32:47Well, shouldn't we be changing that?
32:49We should.
32:49We should, like, get together in rooms and have people stand in the center, right, and, like,
32:53throw praise.
32:54Do you guys have these, like, macro moments where you do things as a group to pull yourselves
32:59out of, like, the everyday chaos of it?
33:02Because everybody felt very aware of a much larger purpose.
33:05That's what drew me to this school, actually.
33:07Yeah.
33:07Actually, it's similar to the church world where you have, like, mission and driven values
33:11and doing everything on purpose.
33:13So there's parts of what you did before that you brought here.
33:16Like, as a pastor, I mean, your job is to teach people how to believe in something.
33:21And now what you do, you're teaching these kids to believe in themselves.
33:25Sure.
33:25You're still in the business of belief.
33:27You've just shifted where that belief starts and where it sounds from.
33:30Yeah, maybe instead of believing this thing, believe in yourself.
33:33I've never thought about that, but that's right.
33:35It's your superpower.
33:36Yeah.
33:37The teachers are doing the hard part, right?
33:39Design only goes so far.
33:41But walking into a space really can change the way we feel.
33:45It can change your day.
33:46It can change your ability to show up for people.
33:49And I want to do that for these teachers.
33:51I want them to have a space that's theirs, that gives them the opportunity to really feel appreciated.
33:58Let me ask you a question about this over here.
34:00Yeah.
34:00We've got an uneven floor, I think.
34:01Why are you asking me?
34:03Here, let's do this.
34:04We're going to fix this, don't you worry.
34:05Where's your little edge guy?
34:06Right here.
34:07Don't look at this.
34:18Iron Gate is one of the oldest restaurants in DC.
34:22It's a really beautiful place.
34:24Your wife is the one who does the cooking?
34:26Mostly.
34:27What I've learned from cooking and how it's helped me is that no matter how stressful my day or how
34:33chill,
34:33it's an opportunity for me to kind of land and unwind.
34:37Yeah.
34:37And it's something that I actually look forward to.
34:39Yeah.
34:39I can see that.
34:40That's my goal for you.
34:41Yeah.
34:42I thought we'd make some beautiful swordfish steaks.
34:44Excellent.
34:44Seasonal roasted vegetables with a nice little herb salad.
34:48Okay.
34:48Simple.
34:49Sounds good.
34:50Mike is someone who knows how to cook, but he shows up after a long day and he's just exhausted.
34:55Sounds good.
34:55So we're going to start with the veggies.
34:57Okay.
34:57And we're going to deal with some summer veggies because sheet pan is as easy as it gets.
35:01Uh-huh.
35:02Because I want this to be as simple as possible.
35:05And even though you would think that the last thing this person should be doing is cooking when they come
35:08home,
35:09I think getting in a kitchen and figuring out how to make a proper meal to feed your family is
35:14going to connect you to yourself.
35:15To them, it's going to change everything.
35:17Have you ever had sumac?
35:19No.
35:19It has kind of like a sour citrusy note and it adds a lot of flavor.
35:24Perfect.
35:25So this is ready.
35:26Follow me with that one, please.
35:29So, 400, I would say about 15 to 20 minutes.
35:33The next thing that I want, I want to have tons of flavor.
35:36So we have some cilantro, fresh mint, and then on your side, some flat leaf parsley, and then some basil.
35:42Yep.
35:42Basically, you just want to pinch.
35:44Okay.
35:44Just the ends.
35:45We don't need the stems for this.
35:46Stems have tons of flavor, but not for this.
35:50I feel like you've led so many lives.
35:53Yeah.
35:53You were a pastor.
35:54Right.
35:55And now an educator.
35:56Right.
35:56Like, you deal with such a complexity of the human experience.
36:02How do you view the world?
36:04Oh, good question.
36:05I think we are very much a product of our genetics, and then also very much a product of our
36:11environment.
36:12Mm-hmm.
36:12Parenting, lack of parenting, demographics, money, no money, poverty, things like that.
36:17I think every behavior in the classroom can ultimately be tied back to all those things.
36:24I have a lot of kids that as soon as they leave our building, there's a stress in the back
36:28of their mind that maybe they'll get shot or maybe something bad will happen.
36:33And so they're bringing that into the classroom.
36:35Yeah.
36:36And so we have to be aware that, like, that kind of stuff that most people in America aren't dealing
36:41with, they're dealing with.
36:42And so then when they have all the behaviors in the classroom, it gives you a sense of, like, okay,
36:47well, no wonder.
36:48I think that kind of a perspective probably has really served you in terms of bedside manner.
36:53Yeah, for sure.
36:53With people and approaching with empathy, compassion, and curiosity as opposed to judgment.
36:59Yeah, yeah.
37:00But it's like, how do you not take that on?
37:03It's talking to other teachers that are going through the same thing.
37:05Yeah, that's why you guys need, like, your safe space.
37:08Exactly.
37:08It's full to kind of like...
37:10Yes, exactly.
37:10Yeah.
37:11Okay, small pivot.
37:12We have our swordfish fillets.
37:14Okay.
37:15So we're going to go ahead and throw these on the grill.
37:17Swordfish is tricky because if you overcook it, it's really dry.
37:20Okay.
37:20Kind of like flaked tuna.
37:22Although I do love a flaky white fish, though.
37:25Okay, well, that will definitely happen.
37:27Yeah.
37:27But you also want to make sure it's not undercooked.
37:29Yeah.
37:29Because like a tuna steak, you can have it rare.
37:30Swordfish you want it cooked through.
37:33Veggies are out.
37:34Look at that.
37:35Look at that.
37:36See the browning?
37:37Yeah, yeah.
37:37Beautiful.
37:39All right.
37:40We're plating.
37:42All right.
37:43Are you familiar with labneh?
37:45No.
37:46Labneh is often used in a lot of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine.
37:50It's basically a yogurt.
37:51Okay.
37:52It's got a little bit of a tang.
37:53Okay.
37:54Like so.
37:55Beautiful.
37:55Yup.
37:56Because we're going to be putting our veggies on there.
37:58Oh, we are?
37:59Yeah.
38:00We're going to go ahead and just lay those on top.
38:03The char on this makes me so happy.
38:06All right.
38:07I like that.
38:08So.
38:08Is this something you're going to be able to make for the fam?
38:10Yeah.
38:11It is kind of meditative.
38:12Yeah.
38:12And your mind does like go only to the food.
38:16And it's something you can ask your kids to kind of like help prep as well.
38:19Yeah, sure.
38:20So it's kind of simple.
38:20Little hit of lemon.
38:22And then my little herb salad.
38:24I'm going to go ahead and put a little bit of oil, a little bit of red wine vinegar,
38:28and just put it right on my fish right here.
38:30You can do the same for yours.
38:31Okay.
38:33Oh, I got a question for you.
38:34Yeah.
38:35Characterize your career with Queer Eye.
38:38Like, it's been a long journey.
38:43Yeah.
38:44Um.
38:50I know that it's going to hit me really hard when it's done.
38:55Because it's been my entire life.
38:57Yeah.
38:59And everything changed so much since this journey started.
39:05I know I'm going to cry when it's over, you know?
39:08The things that I value have shifted.
39:10Despite a lot of the stuff that terrifies me in the world right now,
39:14every single personal human experience that I've had
39:17has sort of deepened my faith in the notion that, like,
39:20everything's going to be okay.
39:21Yeah.
39:22That's right.
39:23If all we ever did was talk to people as individuals or small groups,
39:26like people I've done for most of human history,
39:28we'd all have a collective sense of everything is going to be okay.
39:31Right.
39:31But I think with the internet and social media,
39:35we just get a distorted sense of reality.
39:37That's the thing.
39:38When you connect with an actual human being.
39:40Yep.
39:40When you're preparing a meal, when you're having a conversation.
39:43Right.
39:43Everything can change.
39:45Yep.
39:49Let's see how we did.
39:50Try.
39:53Mmm.
39:55Mmm.
39:56That's really good.
39:57That's nice.
39:58Yeah.
39:59The cacophony of flavors.
40:00A cacophony of flavors, indeed.
40:02Right?
40:03Mmm.
40:04That's so good.
40:05Can I take a picture?
40:06Of course take a picture.
40:08It's your dish.
40:09This is probably the first time I've ever taken a picture of food before.
40:12And since you're here, I'm going to take a picture of you, too.
40:15There's a fire.
40:16There's a fire.
40:18There's a fire.
40:18Welcome, honey.
40:20Hi.
40:21Thanks for you, too, honey.
40:22Thanks for having us today.
40:24Let's talk about your hair.
40:25You're a handsome man.
40:27But I feel like you just haven't seen him in a minute.
40:31Uh-huh.
40:31I'm just natural.
40:32I'm a natural guy.
40:33I'm a real, you know?
40:34I love it.
40:35Yes, honey.
40:36Yeah.
40:36So, I want to show you that you're kind of like sexy man principal vibe.
40:41You know?
40:42Uh-huh.
40:43Like, you could call your wife in.
40:44You could be the judge.
40:45And she could be, like, the lawyer.
40:46There you go.
40:47Like, in your law school stuff.
40:49Yes.
40:49Like, she could be like, I object.
40:51And he could be, like, sustained.
40:53You know?
40:54I also was thinking, do we leave a little bit of a stash to, like, the wisdom?
41:00Nice.
41:01Bitch.
41:02Yeah.
41:02I think yes.
41:03I'm not opposed.
41:04Yes, honey.
41:05Yeah.
41:08He wants to rock his natural hair and more power to you, Mike.
41:11We are going to embrace that hairline.
41:13I'm going to shape it up.
41:14I'm going to give you a little shag.
41:15I'm going to give you a little, like, sexy villain.
41:17Like, a hot, nice villain.
41:19Like, a villain for good.
41:20And just liven you up, honey.
41:22Well, bam, here I am.
41:24Got us all the glitter and sand.
41:26Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
41:29Don't.
41:29Mmm.
41:30Need to make sure we're taking care of our educators, honey,
41:32with a little relaxing massage.
41:34Oh, my goodness.
41:36You're amazing.
41:37Ooh.
41:38You need it.
41:39You're tense, hunty.
41:43Mmm.
41:45Mike is a busy educator.
41:47He's a girl dad.
41:47He's a husband.
41:48He does not have time to do a really long beauty routine.
41:52Self-care, it's not only skin care and hair care.
41:55It's how much sleep you get.
41:56It's breathing techniques.
41:57It's your spirituality.
41:58It's how you regulate your nervous system.
42:01So I want Mike to know that his time of taking care of himself doesn't have to be long.
42:06It can be short little pockets that allow him to give himself the love that he gives to everyone else.
42:12As a teacher, it's, like, really important for you to take care of yourself so you don't bring your little
42:17baby self out.
42:19So if you're ever feeling like you're in a rut or you're a little blue, try getting your brows done.
42:24Wow.
42:26Wow.
42:28People are going to take you so much more seriously as a history teacher now that you have this.
42:32It's, like, literally like an angel just got their wings.
42:37I've just put so much love into this hair.
42:39Yeah.
42:39And you've worked so hard to help so many people find their beauty and find their strength.
42:44So I hope this new look helps you find your beauty and your strength.
42:47You ready to see the new mic?
42:48Ready.
42:49Okay.
42:50Whoa.
42:52Bam!
42:53That's incredible.
42:56Hip, hip, hip.
42:58A little too butch.
42:59Get into those hips.
43:01If you work hard, you gotta play hard in the self-care sandbox or you're gonna burn out.
43:06So, see, blondes do have more fun.
43:08Whoa.
43:09Oh, boy.
43:10Whoa.
43:11Oh, boy.
43:12Give him a little ass.
43:13Yes.
43:14Yes.
43:14Say, bad, bad teacher.
43:16Mm-hmm.
43:16No, I can't do that.
43:17Oh, you're so right.

43:22I guess so.
43:23Can I see the new you?

43:34My skin looks clean and shiny.
43:36Wow.
43:37I'm taking it back.
43:38Looks good, right?
43:39So versatile.
43:40So versatile.

43:42You can do this look.
43:45Wow, that's incredible.
43:47Wow.
43:52Oh, life is like a maze and I'll make you crazy.
43:56Make you crazy.
43:57But you can't be afraid cause I got you, baby.

44:03We made it.
44:03It's only the beginning, yeah, we celebrate it.
44:06Yay!
44:07Thank you so much.

49:57What are we doing? We're doing this?
50:03It takes one teacher to believe in you
50:05to change your entire life,
50:07and that is a superpower.
50:10This young individual right here
50:12is going to my alma mater.
50:15Mike and the rest of these teachers,
50:17they put in the work.
50:18And they are sending off these kids to college
50:21knowing that they are equipped for it.
50:23Congratulations, class of DPA.

51:23I feel like I've grown up in front of you guys.

51:47that was really difficult.
51:50The resilience and the strength and the wisdom
51:53that you feel like you got out of this show
51:55you already had inside yourself.
