00:02Australia is in the midst of the biggest housing crisis we've ever had we need to
00:08build homes faster and more efficiently for all budgets and all Australians and
00:14that's exactly what future house is all about we're building three houses for
00:22three families in just three months using three different budgets and three
00:28different modern methods of construction my mission with this project these houses
00:33must be stylish sophisticated and above all sustainable now we may not solve
00:40Australia's housing crisis but we're gonna give this a red-hot guy so who are
00:49the three brave families who are joining us on this mission the Fox family from
00:55Blue Mountains New South Wales are building two modular homes on the same
00:59block so they can care for their disabled daughter Kate so here is where mummy's
01:05house is and this is a bit strange isn't it because mummy's got a house and
01:08daddy's got a house it hasn't been without its challenges it's definitely a
01:13lot of anxiety going on you know paying that last installment but in the race to
01:17the finish their two factory-built houses are well on their way then there's the
01:22quichini family from Canberra who are building a precast concrete home their
01:28home made a successful landing appearing so fast it was as if it had fallen from
01:33the sky it's all been in theory until this point it's a dream come true and my
01:38family of course the jury's in the northern rivers of New South Wales our
01:43beautiful 3d concrete printed home is going nowhere fast DA is going in as we
01:50speak so we're keeping our fingers cross this is impossible tonight I made a
01:57family who hasn't had an energy bill in years so you're actually making money
02:02yeah from your own battery and we'll show you how you can do the same instead of
02:06getting charged we actually make money every year the quichini's power ahead as
02:11Sarah takes charge two and then the fan and then two time to add some personal
02:16touches do you want to put your hand print on them that's a good girl after
02:23months of red tape and financial stress the foxes get some good news ready to put
02:28it on the truck next week and deliver as house day arrives certainly everything
02:34changes you've got to start again a new life but for me it seems disaster is
02:42still around every corner such a small amount of time jamming I can't give those
02:47ideas oxygen if I can't even get a DA approved so I take matters right to the
02:54top is Australia the home of red tape bread takes a massive problem despite all
02:58the challenges we're pushing this to the limit we're two months into our three
03:11month long mission to build the house of the future I've come to Canberra to
03:16check on how the quichinis are going with their future house well I have just
03:23driven past the site and it seems there's a house there and there wasn't a couple of
03:46weeks ago
03:47mate how are you you've built a house pretty much yeah wow she's a decent size
03:54isn't she it's a custom 300 square meter home it's not your average four bedroom
03:59takes up nearly the whole block custom rake sealant steel yeah mate I don't
04:06think I've ever seen anything go up this quickly you've got the roof and the walls
04:12and the slab all in place and you're 11 days in correct it's incredible it's a
04:19good way to build isn't it long mate after years of planning and months of red
04:24tape and heartache for Sean and Sarah the speed with which their house has gone up
04:29is certainly welcome news you've got a house yeah we do wow yeah we do look at
04:34it the last time I was here it was just with garden yes yep the progress in the
04:39timeframe is just phenomenal just went up so fast it's just really lovely and
04:45exciting to see because you can finally get to see it in three dimensions it's
04:48not just not just a picture on the paper that you've had in your head for a
04:52long time this is actually how it's going to feel I'll go deeper than it was last
04:57time it is a little bit because your house seems to have sunk yes yes just a
05:02little bit we were expecting to be entering right about here yeah walking
05:06straight in the ACT solar encroachment rules resulted in the quichinis having to
05:11lower the level of their house and cop an additional 31k in excavation costs
05:17which means that their new home is sitting in a big costly hole well I gotta
05:24say I quite like it because it really feels like it's invested into the
05:30landscape now yeah I quite like it too actually yeah and actually what's
05:34happened now that the house is low is you're looking straight at the garden
05:38instead of staring at everyone on the street yes um now what's this room this
05:45is gonna be the gym the gym yeah so bougie one of the big things about our
05:50design was having a place that we could just take care of ourselves yeah yeah
05:54because we've always been living in small spaces with every on top of each
05:57other yeah and I do a lot of physio and a lot of rehab because injuries yeah
06:01Sarah it's right yeah we can't get it since I've had kids yeah I put on five
06:08kilos only five but yes thanks so much thanks so much this is the kids playroom
06:16oh yeah great nice access into the garden these are kids bedrooms yeah one two
06:21three yeah their space is right next to them they can easily just walk straight
06:25out yeah play in the garden and then and then the parents are at the front of
06:28the house yes guarding the family yes and this is your big lofty northern
06:36out that's an all that sucks in all that beautiful winter sun so good yeah it's
06:42nice to actually see it and be like yes this is great this is you know what we
06:46wanted it's just all happening faster than I knew it would be quick but it's
06:52all just happened very very quick safe to say you'll definitely be in well
06:56before Christmas yes would you like to hear how mine's going yes yes please we
07:02haven't even laid the slab yet yeah yeah I know you find that hilarious once the
07:11slab goes in yeah all the rest of the components will be 3d printed at least
07:18that's what I hope in the blue mountains of New South Wales Michael and Helen's vacant block
07:26is being prepped for the arrival of their twin modular homes in terms of site works per se like a
07:35traditional builder there's very little work that we have to do for site works or hardly any
07:40that's because the houses are completely finished in the factory and then loaded onto trucks and
07:46delivered both Fox homes are at the eight-week mark and they're almost complete the only thing left is
07:54to drop it in on site by end of this week we would have had all of the what we
07:59call finish offs and fit
08:00off everything completed and then soon after that it'll be rocking up for installation hello hi Rex
08:12hello Helen how are you favorite person really really nice to see you your house has come leaps and
08:20bounds we are pretty much ready to put it on the truck and deliver okay I'm going to show you
08:27show
08:27you I'm going to flip the camera around okay it's still painting underway you're almost done Sonny almost
08:32done all your bench top thrown bench tops but they are non-carcinogenic obviously no silica wow so it's been
08:40cut
08:41already fantastic and my sink is in oh my gosh look at that looks so good I love it love
08:47it love it love
08:48the cabinetry is beautiful your tiling is done oh it's gorgeous no it's beautiful workmanship thank
08:57you thank you Helen thank you Michael it's a great pleasure while the quichinis from Canberra and the
09:05foxes from the Blue Mountains have both made spectacular progress building their homes
09:11I'm stuck in limbo waiting for my development application to be approved we're battling
09:17the clock and time is our enemy even my builders are losing confidence I think it's just like such
09:24a small amount of time Jamie you know I know it's crazy but I would I just want to I
09:29want to give it a
09:29red hot go the hard facts are putting DAs in is a punish it's slow it's laborious I need to
09:38ramp this
09:38up if we're going to get this thing built well we're off to the town planners office weeks are slipping
09:48by
09:50and I've still got nothing from council not even a notice I'm not just worried I'm up at night not
10:02just
10:02for the show but for the family I promised Amika I wouldn't put her through it all again and here
10:12we are
10:12again things have been stalling and I'm not going to hit this deadline I mean my whole life's hanging on
10:20this it's not just my family and I it's a whole bunch of really fantastic motivated partners who are
10:33doing inspirational things in the sustainability space but I can't give those ideas oxygen if I
10:40can't even get a DA approved
10:53well we're off to the town planners office weeks are slipping by and I've still got nothing from council
11:02I mean my whole life's hanging on this okay there might be some light at the end of this tunnel
11:14I
11:14just had a great meeting with the planners NDC planners here in Lismore are bending over backwards
11:21to help me which is great I explained to them that it'll be an off-grid situation it's the second
11:273d
11:27printed house in Australia so this is really making history we're really doing a lot of innovative stuff
11:33so hopefully with that in mind and a decent letter we might be able to get this over the line
11:41and get
11:42it built before the deadline two fingers crossed please that's one bit of good news but now I've got
11:53another hurdle to overcome will my 3d print actually work a few weeks ago I was left devastated when the
12:05first test print of a concrete column for our dream 3d printed future house crumbled before my very eyes
12:14since then there's been several more failures
12:21what was the problem the two accelerators that we use weren't actually mixed together properly so
12:28now I'm back again for one last test wow we're getting there mate this is this is this could this
12:38might actually happen so if we can't make this work I think I'll book a ticket overseas and I'll never
12:46see Jamie ever again so the whole job is relying on obviously we're printing the structure here
12:51we're on our fourth test in the last sort of 10 minutes but uh we're dialing it in
12:58I'm putting on a brave face but to be honest my confidence is shaken if this column doesn't get to
13:04three meters we don't have a house
13:09you got your 11 secret herbs and spices we do but we're accelerating this mix right at the head so
13:15in here we're pumping in a liquid based accelerant right uh just so that it'll cure so it can take
13:20the
13:20next layer on top we've got a 38 second lap time at the moment but look as we dial it
13:24in we'll get
13:25down to about a 20 second lap time i imagine yeah so we'll we're getting there we're gonna get there
13:30we
13:30have to get there bugger all this technical stuff i just want to get it to three meters or about
13:36three
13:37times my height look we're doing a hell of a lot of testing now uh and we haven't got long
13:41to get it
13:42right because this is a brand new printhead it's a brand new sort of methodology for us to be able
13:47to
13:47print vertically in one go very fast we've got two more layers left it's about three meters high
14:03pushing to 3.1 so i'm confident semi-confident
14:09mate you did it we did you did it finally
14:15i won't tell you i was concerned oh satisfaction absolutely only another 32 to go that's true
14:22actually
14:30in canberra the corchini's new precast concrete home has come a long way a bit different with
14:37the roof on isn't it it is different with the roof on it's sort of cooler in here too now
14:40yeah with the
14:42resi cast process once the walls come in the house is built just like any other house so it's
14:48another big day for owner sarah and builder mick as the electricals and plumbing are being roughed in
14:55well it's good to have the boss on site really yeah the other fella talks too much just saying
15:02sleep yes so he should be right and like all mums with young kids sarah doesn't have time to muck
15:09around
15:10so um with lights so we've got one over the lounge area and one over the dining and then we
15:15also
15:15we're going to get some down lights yeah two and then the fan and then two right one two
15:21yeah the fridge and the ovens are next to the fridge got those two ovens one above the other yeah
15:25we're going to get a robot vacuum so that has been a dream for a while i'm optimistic all the
15:31toys will stay in the playroom oh yeah never happens so there's the shower yep which i've sort of
15:38marked out that's roughly where your bath coming yes we're going to put niches in now instead of
15:44well dude what's going to have a shelf
15:45we're already tired on space nice just go glad i was here to sort out a few tiling things
15:52that i thought about but didn't actually tell anyone oh i know i'm a pain should have sent sean here
16:00instead yeah fun long though a bit longer a bit longer
16:09i have a lot of things because i'll be sitting with my head at that end yeah
16:14yeah yeah sitting in the bath with my wife actually sarah time it is mick may have built the house
16:19but it's clear who's in charge now lock all the doors sit in the bath now the kids will be
16:24down
16:24there so i won't be able to hear them screaming i'll just be in my little oasis down here hello
16:30i'm waking up or is she oh we're gonna be cranky no we're cranky
16:42our time in the northern rivers on the farm with the kids and my beautiful amika is just idyllic
16:49the fresh air the rolling hills and the farm animals there's only one thing missing in my
16:56hashtag farm life something every fair dinkan farmer needs
17:07full range that's a lot of tractors we have 30 different categories yeah and over 100 different
17:15models sold about 35 000 different machines wow turns out buying a tractor is a little trickier than
17:24i thought fortunately i've got my mate dazzler on hand to guide me through tractor 101 mate this is
17:31amazing this is what you need in a paddock wow tinted glass oh air conditioning wow who's going to be
17:43teaching me unfortunately me farm life here we come
17:56i've got a new toy for the farm and uh it's safe to say it's my favorite toy
18:06i can dig anywhere i like i can plant i can tow i can trench i can do anything with
18:13this thing it's amazing
18:19what are you doing i thought this would be great and us working side by side this is a dream
18:26come true mate
18:27not for me is it watch this you're ready up in the low
18:46i think you should stick to his day job but maybe just do this one day on the weekends
18:53oh my god
18:57now i'm all about healthy sustainable homes and the cochinis are getting a new system that brings
19:04new meaning to fresh air today we're putting in a hrv system yep it's a heat recovery ventilation
19:10system basically what's the system designed to do so basically what we're going to do here is we
19:16exchange all the entire air of the house yep in two hour cycles or three hour cycles you don't have
19:21to open any windows any doors anymore you can keep them shut yep and you get constantly fresh air
19:28to prevent mold and moisture build up in the homes yep you need actually a ventilation system for a
19:33healthy home basically pretty much the cochinis are setting up a happy healthy home however the
19:43australian building landscape is anything but amidst a housing crisis building a house in australia
19:50is too hard too slow and simply too expensive so i'm going to the top to find out what can
19:58be done about
19:58this well here we are at parliament house i'm in the courtyard and we're about to meet the minister
20:05for housing minister o'neill now what minister claire o'neill doesn't know is that i'm going to ask her
20:12for a bit of a favor thank you so much for making time for us today because you have a
20:18big job on your
20:19hands that's absolutely right damie we've got in australia today millions of people who are in some form of
20:25housing distress the federal government's got a goal of trying to build 1.2 million homes in five
20:31years but we're not going to get there unless we see more innovation in housing we are building homes
20:36in australia basically the same way that we were 40 years ago and if we're going to build faster we
20:41need
20:41that to change so what are we doing about making the practice of building your own home more affordable
20:48uh and more simple well one of the main things that we can do is support innovation in housing so
20:54we'd like to see builders trying new ways of doing things and we know that the evidence overseas shows
20:59us that we actually can build homes a lot faster and a lot more efficiently so on our project we're
21:05looking at tilt slab construction where you can have a house to lock up in 10 days oh my gosh
21:11however the council restrictions took them four to six months is australia the home of red tape
21:19red tape's a massive problem i spend a lot of time talking to builders and they say to me you
21:25know
21:25claire the hard part used to be actually building the house now it's working through that thicket of
21:29red tape that lies in the path of them just laying that first brick one of the challenges is that
21:34we've
21:34got three levels of government in australia and for that 40-year period all those three levels of
21:39government have just been adding on new layers of red tape and regulation now for that favor i was
21:45talking about claire we're lucky enough to have the green building council of australia as one of our
21:50judges as we judge these three different modern methods of construction we would love it if you
21:56would come out and help us judge these new homes absolutely jamie you had me in a low oh yeah
22:02that would
22:02be great coming up the big call i've been waiting for but is it good news did you speak with
22:10council
22:12amazing and and the fox's homes hit the road it's a really an exciting job that we have here
22:27on our farm in the northern rivers the warmer weather means everything is suddenly bursting into life
22:34everything except for one small thing our 3d printed house
22:47damien yes mate yes did you speak with council amazing and yes we got approval
23:01oh mate that's the best news i've had in years
23:03you it's incredible thank you so much for letting me know cheers thank you yes we got approval i cannot
23:12believe this that has to be an absolute record so byron shire council said that they wanted to work
23:22with us because we were building something that was meaningful sustainable something that hopefully may
23:28spark a bit of change and they've done it they've pulled it off
23:38in the blue mountains of new south wales the foxes share the same determination
23:42to bring their future houses to life not even a blast of cold and wet can stop the final preparations
23:49for the delivery of their two modular homes water mains are being connected thank you zach
23:58and the holes dug for the piers on which the modular homes will rest
24:04so right now we're just drilling this second module and we're just going a bit slower now because
24:10there's there's all those big tree roots yeah this this is a big job
24:22it's all happening quickly now it's got to this stage the modules when they arrive
24:28will be craned into position and fixed into the concrete footings leaving the comfort of our nice
24:34rental home and it's exciting but it's uh you know a bit of fear too suddenly everything changes you've
24:42got to start again a new life and uh it should be good it should be good i'm sure we'll
24:49be happy once
24:49we get in there and uh you know yeah once we get rid of the drama of moving
24:58it's my firm belief that every house in australia should have a solar and a battery solution you
25:05might remember last week that we helped sort out the fox's solar system what we're going to do for
25:10you guys is supply and install 10 to 15 kilowatt of solar per house now i know that some of
25:18you may
25:19need a little more convincing or information on the benefits of a solar and battery solution
25:24but what if i told you it's possible to never pay an energy bill again and on top of that
25:30you can
25:31even make money well i'm about to meet a family who i'm told has done exactly that you got rid
25:39of
25:39your old energy retailer and swapped and moved over to amber these guys are the new energy market
25:46disruptors in essence their software runs your electricity supply you don't really have to think
25:52about it every day there's two peaks of power in australia electricity becomes expensive when
25:58everyone gets home from work yes and first thing in the morning yes your solar system's got a battery
26:02you store that energy in your battery and then when the peak price happens they launch any extra power
26:08you've got in your battery that you're not using in your house they sell it back to the grid at
26:12the peak
26:13price and if you make any money between those two levels they pass those profits back to you
26:19correct that's our current bill uh for amber you're in credit yeah for 2300 instead of getting charged
26:27we actually make money every year you are a future house yeah we're living in the future
26:36installing solar and batteries isn't just good for the environment it's also good for your hip pocket
26:41but it does take a little upfront investment well there's a brand new tool that can help you improve
26:47your home's energy efficiency and even help you finance it combank has developed the home energy
26:53assessment tool provided by home energy australia by simply entering your address into the online tool
27:00it calculates the energy efficiency of your house and provides options on how you can improve it
27:06including adding a solar system and batteries hey let's see how this thing works yeah sure good
27:14so it's pulling in all sorts of public information including aerial photos and there we have it
27:21it's low that doesn't look good that is very low so it's a 3.9 out of 10 rather average
27:27as you scroll
27:28down you can see it provides you some suggestions around what you can do to upgrade an obvious one is
27:33solar and you can see here it actually helps you understand how much you might save after that upgrade
27:38it even tells you how much it'll cost to install your solar panels and if you scroll down here it
27:43actually tells you what you might be eligible for in rebates so let's say you want to go ahead with
27:48it yeah it'll connect you to local installers and if you need finance combank has a range of financing
27:54options off the back of it so combank will actually finance your solar system if you need to
27:59absolutely i love this these upgrades we will offer finance on and if you are a combank home loan
28:05customer yes it is an incredibly competitive rate so why isn't everyone in australia doing this
28:10well we're hoping with tools like this that take the hassle out of it more people do
28:16now i wouldn't recommend anything without testing it myself so this is the spot which is why i'm putting
28:24in the mother of all solar farms on my farm what we're going to be doing is a ground mount
28:30system it's
28:31going to sit on a frame take up roughly 70 square meters we're going to be facing about this way
28:36here
28:36towards that tree right there basically is your perfect north we have three separate arrays yep
28:44each 10 kilowatt and that'll total our 30 kilowatt system so this is the sun path moving relative to
28:52the array wow we're gonna have 30 kilowatt of solar panels that'll supply the home and supply the big
28:57battery bank that we've got being installed 96 kilowatt well that's about three times the size of an
29:03average home solar panel system and six times the amount of battery storage i hope i'm not getting
29:10too carried away here so you'll be running completely off the grid no bill no reliance on the electricity
29:15retailers and in fact because you'd pair up with amber electric as your retailer yes trade wholesale prices
29:22yes you'll be in credit year-round by a significant amount so i'll have a holiday fund as well
29:27you'll have a holiday fund that's incredible man exactly
29:37well now that our da's been approved it's time to take a few more things up to the farm
29:42hey kids we're gonna pack some toys for the farm well today is move day and i feel like i'm
29:51getting
29:51deja vu all over again okay that's one down oh meeks the grace truck is here
30:03yes this is it we're going to the farm
30:07all of this insulation yep um that's going to go to the farm we've got our hybrid vehicles the first
30:15removal company in australia to have fully electric trucks so we're pretty proud of that
30:19for longer distance removals grace also offers a train service which is exactly what we're using 90
30:26of the items we're sending interstate are through the rail network so it's actually less carbon
30:31intensive to send it by train it's about about 40 less carbon emissions by doing it through the rail
30:36network wow beds obviously you've got to go kids toys yeah the crew will pull this apart when we
30:44deliver we put it all back together for you and put it in place as well so you don't have
30:47to worry
30:47about that that's dreamy this was yes i don't uh envy the person putting this back together it's not
30:53my forte coming up problem solved mick gets the final piece of the puzzle in the race
31:12to lock up very exciting and we put my windows to the ultimate test
31:31in canberra at the quichini's new pre-cast concrete house it's a big day just gotta look for oh
31:39bloody hell only just learning to walk and build a mixed pump because the final piece of the puzzle
31:48he's been waiting for is due to arrive put the windows in today and finally get a lock-up payment
31:53which is good so becomes cash flow positive today so very excited about that now when it comes to
31:59lock up mick made some big promises you're not telling any jokes no we're gonna lock the four betty
32:05up for sean and sarah and the kids in 10 days due to factors out of mixed control it's ended
32:11up taking
32:1117 days to get to lock up but somehow mick still managed to keep the build on schedule overall time
32:19frame we're not bad we're still pretty much on track we're just not at lock up but we're past lock
32:26up in other places oh interim like all the internal frames have gone up to keep the build on track
32:34mick needs to get the windows installed today that's a big day today
32:45the other issue too is insulation's been booked in today because chip rock is on monday so you know
32:52we're going to be climbing over each other which isn't ideal either so it's going to be a fair bit
32:58of people management today fortunately as a former rodeo clown mick's an old hand at negotiating tricky
33:07situations
33:12uh not sure what the problem is out something about a big door's got to go outside but the scaffold's
33:17there so we'll go down and check it out i think yes 100 let's do it
33:26problem solved
33:30all happening
33:37these are thermal broken windows double glazed so really good between the pre-caster being spot on to
33:45the millimetre there's no gap there which is unreal you know that's what we're after
33:49another couple of hours we should have them all in and uh sean and sarah will have a locked up
33:56home
33:56it's very exciting hello sarah how are you good how are you very exciting day
34:04now when it comes to energy efficient design these windows are simply the best in class
34:12we all know about double glazing but now there's thermally broken windows it's new technology that makes
34:18windows even more energy efficient so what thermally broken does is actually stops that heat transfer
34:24or cold transfer and then keeps your house inside perfect you've got the best glass and the best
34:30aluminium products you can on the market um for this kind of climate and this builds with the windows in
34:35the quichini's house is at locker and all that's needed now is the final stamp of approval do you like
34:43the windows do you want to put your hand print on them yeah feel the windows that's it rub rub
34:50it on
34:50go on that's it good girl oh look at that eh all your handprints good girl hello beautiful girl
35:01good job very happy yeah thank you they're so good
35:07dowel windows in partnership with ventus are doing some incredible things remember grandma's old house
35:14with the classic 1950s louvers well they've come a long way dowel and ventus have reinvented the louver
35:22which means they've developed one of australia's first twin blade louvers that not only increases your
35:29home's energy efficiency but also its acoustic performance and i'm lucky enough to be using them
35:36in my design but first they have to be put to the test this is a world first i don't
35:42think we've ever
35:43had a double glazed louver in the history of australian building have we not a dual blade louver no
35:49definitely not so the difference being a dual blade versus double glaze the aesthetics and the clear
35:53view you're going to get through it instead of a prison bar look are you really going to blow this
35:57window
35:57up we're going to blow it up we're going to turn it up to three four hundred kilometers an hour
36:01it's
36:01going to explode with so it's positive pressure which is pushing on the window wow so we want
36:05cyclone conditions we want heavy rains we want rain coming in sideways to see if it'll get through
36:11the louvers we want heat we want cold we want everything right smoke the whole lot the objective
36:16of this test is to push the windows literally to their breaking point beyond what they'd ever
36:22experience in real life are you ready matt i'm ready let's go okay all right let's crank this baby
36:29up go to two go to three keep going where are we going now keep in mind these louvers have
36:35never been
36:35tested to these sorts of wings we got to push up to 450 k's you can hear it screaming i
36:42can see it flex it
36:44keep going ash how many kilometers 500 kilometers an hour matt and i moved back to a safer area
36:51to observe the ultimate destruction test in the end we reached 700 kilometers per hour before they
36:59reached breaking point it's going to go it will go this time oh my god
37:09mate what just happened then 10 000 old pascals it's the highest ash has ever had his rig go to
37:16so
37:16that's the first product to get that high in it so that you're pushing close to 700 kilometers an hour
37:22plus uh and you saw the result the highest wind level ever recorded on the planet is 484 kilometers per
37:29hour and that was inside a tornado so it's safe to say these louvers are almost indestructible
37:38that was proper that was uh well done i told you to hang around and watch it yeah mate that's
37:43an
37:43extraordinary piece of technology coming up the breezy cast building experiment that could change
37:50everything can you deliver cost effectively and can you do it at scale and finally helen and michael's
37:56new homes come home i'm so excited
38:07now if we're really going to solve the building crisis then we need volume home builders to get
38:13on board builders like domain homes who build 500 homes a year so a few weeks ago i invited a
38:20team
38:20from domain to see mixed resi cast concrete system in action in the hope that they would take a risk
38:27and give it a go very impressive very impressive yeah awesome today has proven that it's got some
38:33potential so yeah we're gonna have a go okay wizard can get excited
38:41domain are trialing the resi cast building method at rouse hill in sydney's western suburbs
38:47matt campbell is the ceo of campbell property group who own domain and clarendon homes
38:54he's also the man who's putting his money where his mouth is here you are breaking ground
38:58yeah on your very first resi cast site at the moment it would appear that the resi cast solution
39:05is a little bit more expensive than traditional bricks and mortar right but time is money yes so
39:11time is money for both us and our customers so i suspect that there's time savings in there yes that
39:18we'll we'll find out along the way that'll give you the advantage it'll give us yeah it'll mitigate
39:23those costs yeah the real test for these modern methods of construction
39:27is can you deliver cost effectively and can you do it at scale let's hope for the future of aussie
39:32housing domain homes trial of mick's resi cast system is a success
39:40in canberra mick from resi cast has built sarah and sean quichini's home
39:45in record time it's now time for them to join the solar and battery party g'day mate hey how are
39:52you
39:52how are you what do you got here well i have rc solar panels they are so if you look
39:57very closely
39:58you cannot see any soldering between one selling another oh yeah so that's a very unique technology
40:04that rc developed and that reduces the risk of micro cracks which could potentially impact the
40:10performance of the panel all right you want to chuck them up yes let's do it
40:22so this is a 40 kilowatt stack so it comprises of five eight kilowatt modules so you get a inverter
40:34on
40:34top it also comes with a full backup system we've got the gateway over there so in the case of
40:39a blackout
40:39this house will be powered up in less than a millisecond the thing we love about it is how
40:44flexible it is it doesn't take up much space we can retrofit it to any system in the market
40:48or it's perfect for new installations it's just a fantastic product and to manage the household
40:54energy generation and use they're also setting up a smart amber system to manage their power if you're
41:02doing the automation with amber your bill is actually going to go below zero and we reckon you're
41:07going to be around about two and a half thousand dollars a year in credit nice we can we can
41:13just
41:13retire and let the let the electricity pay the bills it makes me really happy to see this system go
41:20up
41:20because not only are we going to be able to be off grid anytime we need to be but we're
41:25also producing
41:26more than we need and we can sell that back to the grid and actually make a bit of money
41:31off our own
41:32home just through passive income so passive house design passive income it's a win-win
41:44after 10 weeks of construction being built at the high-tech factory the fox's two modular homes are
41:50complete let me run through the final checks yep all good time to prepare the finished houses
41:58for transportation and delivery any sudden movement could spell disaster not even the ground in the
42:06tiles can move it's not done systematically if it's not done carefully there's a good chance of it rocking
42:11dropping damaging the unit or even coming all the way to the ground
42:19this is a two-model house so whilst this is ready for lifting the other house is being ready again
42:26same
42:26process put on the wheels and then the forklift will bring it out and then the next truck will come
42:31and you know start lifting
42:36each module weighs eight to nine tons and is over three meters wide
42:42and 10 meters long it's also up to four meters in height we don't cut corners everything is done
42:52very very precisely we do a house a week so it's it's a pretty it's an exciting it's a really
43:00an
43:00exciting job that we have here
43:05loader loaded with their precious cargo the trucks head off at night by escort
43:13as they begin the slow and steady journey towards their final destination up the hill to the blue
43:19mountains of new south wales
43:23coming up i check on my little patch of dirt mate who designed this thing um some galoot
43:29but the reality is there's a long way to go
43:40in the blue mountains of new south wales it's a momentous occasion for michael and helen fox
43:48so exciting
43:56their two brand new modular homes are about to be delivered
44:02after winding their way through the mountains overnight
44:05the trucks carefully squeeze their way through the last hundred meters
44:10second clearance to be delivered to the fox's property
44:22oh it's pretty amazing isn't it yeah yeah this is helen's house
44:29the first one going on the back of the block
44:34it's a bit scary when you hoist it up you only just miss misses that hole over there and
44:40too stressful for me tell you what when you look at those chains that are
44:45you know coming down from the hook to the spreader thing there yeah just visualize them snapping
44:55but i suppose they've done it before it must be all right
45:05the modular home snapped together like enormous lego bricks
45:15and all of a sudden helen has a house next it's time for michael's modular house to be craned in
45:23it's good isn't it very nice
45:35helen michael this is a very small oh no token of appreciation thank you so much that's all right
45:44thank you oh you're lovely thank you so much thank you michael the largest investment that somebody
45:50would make is on a house buying a block of land and you know building or getting a house yes
45:56i do it
45:56every day and you will see the clients overwhelmed that's the pleasure that we as a company derive okay
46:03helping clients to sort of make it faster and deliver it and you know put it together and get them
46:09into their domain as quick as possible fantastic yeah beautiful beautiful yeah look back
46:20and you're looking onto the trees hello trees oh now they're in place the houses look amazing
46:26they're offset just at the right angle you know we've got privacy between us they just look amazing
46:33they just look fantastic on the block and i can just see caitlyn being relaxed and not walking around
46:39boxes and you know her bedroom being set up the way she knows it to look like and finally making
46:45a life
46:45for ourselves and making it like at home
46:53in canberra mick's doing his best to help the quichinis get into their house as soon as
46:58possible what a great use of recycled concrete ah beautiful
47:06including by lending a hand to the air conditioning installers
47:13oh it's not even heavy it's pretty lightweight nice and sleek i call it sleek my dear air
47:20conditioners are well known for being good value energy efficient and easy to install i always want
47:26to give it to clean it and make sure it looks brand new
47:33all right i think we're done looking good
47:39now i've been away from the farm for just over a week and i'm super excited to see the progress
47:44on site
47:45of our new home whoa are you sure it's big enough uh wow you guys have been busy well done
47:55mate nice to see
47:56you well done this looks enormous guys it's amazing right you can really see it now this is kind of
48:03breakfast bar kitchen laundry over there lounge room over there look at the sunken lounge room in there
48:12mate i love it how many square meters are we talking the first pour 640 square right but that's not
48:19all interior right no that's two-thirds of that is interior a third is outside that's right you've got
48:26your uh little meditation area there the outside area yeah and the barbecue area yeah mate it's feeling
48:32really elevated isn't it and and the pool finishes out beyond that yellow post really yeah mate who designed
48:40this thing um some galoot
48:44but listen we've we've broken the back of this yeah absolutely like this is this is a good start
48:50yes it's a good start but the truth is i'm miles behind the other families and i may not even
48:59get
48:59the house finished on time mick and the cochinis are already at lockup and have started installing
49:06appliances rex has delivered and installed the foxes two modular homes and they're actually about to
49:13move in so when i put this project up against the other two
49:20i'm nowhere in three weeks i'll have the federal housing minister looking at my house
49:27and it better not be a patch of dirt next week on future house it's all hands on deck
49:34as i attempt the impossible you guys are amazing we reveal the finished three houses
49:43and we take the teams to parliament house for the ultimate pitch would you come out and help us
49:49judge these homes what a request absolutely jamie which house will they vote for as the very best future
49:55house
