Nepal's former prime minister, K.P. Sharma Oli, was arrested on Saturday (March 28) as police investigate whether he was negligent in failing to prevent dozens of deaths during Gen Z anti-corruption protests last September, said officials.

00:02Former Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Ali was arrested on Saturday to help with police
00:08investigation into the anti-corruption protests by the Gen Z group in September last year. The
00:1574-year-old politician, who has had two kidney transplants in the past, was taken into custody
00:21at his residence in Gundu and held at the Kathmandu District Police Complex. He was
00:27then admitted to a hospital for a medical checkup. The arrest was made a day after rapper-turned
00:33politician Belendra Shah was sworn in as the new Prime Minister and after a recommendation
00:38by a panel investigating violence during the protests that he should be prosecuted for negligence.
01:01A total of 76 people were killed during the two days of unrest, which led to Ali's resignation.

01:15who led his three-year-old Rastriya Swatantra party to win 182 seats in the 275-member parliament
01:22in the March 5th election, has been tasked with restoring political stability and creating jobs
01:28in Nepal, long troubled by fragile governments and weak growth prospects. The 35-year-old is the
01:35country's youngest Prime Minister in decades and the first from the Madhese people of the Southern
01:41Plains bordering India to lead the country. Shah had run an election campaign in support of the protests
01:48and had previously described Ali as a terrorist who betrayed the country.
