It's fascinating to realize that every piece of food we eat goes through an entire cascade of chemical reactions in order to be converted into ATP - the molecule that provides energy for the existence of almost all our cells. All these reactions are incredibly complex and highly coordinated, which is not surprising, since their foundations began to form billions of years ago - an almost unimaginable span of time even by evolutionary standards.
As a result, humans are now able to consume and utilize a wide variety of organic foods. Meanwhile, other organisms have evolved even more remarkable metabolic abilities some can feed on wood, and in theory certain microbes are capable of metabolizing components of petroleum products.
