00:03The thought experiment for the whole story is the unconditional love a parent feels for the child.
00:09And how far can you take the story to demonstrate what that means?
00:12It's not just about the beautiful parts of love. It's also about the dark side.
00:17It's about how everything wonderful and everything bad ultimately can start with love.
00:27Set and action!
00:33It's me!
00:35Here we are at the end, and we go all the way to the very, very beginning of Ellie,
00:39which is her mother, Anna, played by Ashley Johnson,
00:42who is the true beginning of Ellie because Ashley played Ellie in the game.
00:45And Ashley is spectacular here.
00:52It sort of brings the story around to meeting Ellie for the first time
00:56and how she was first brought into this world.
01:00And there was a special level of it for me to play the mother of this character that I care
01:08so deeply about.
01:14It was the first time I've ever had to do a giving birth scene.
01:17And it was an incredible day. You're dealing with real babies, which that is usually hard.
01:23But they connected so well. And it shows how strong Ellie is of where she came from and what she
01:32had to go through.
01:32And that even her mother had such a fight to live.
01:39By this point, watching the series, if you've played the game, you have a new Ellie in your mind.
01:43And I need to understand why she is immune, but I also need to understand how much she was loved.
01:49And there's this genetic connecting between the two Ellie's that we know.
01:54And this moment connects them together.
01:58Anna and Marlene have gone through this whole journey of this pandemic together
02:03and finally realized that connection when Marlene walks into the room and sees Anna in the state that she's in.
02:16I don't know if I can talk about this scene without crying.
02:18They're fictional characters, but I do think that a wonderful gift of the series
02:23is seeing these two best friends' final words to each other
02:28in those last moments of Anna's last breaths.
02:33Her name is Ellie.
02:36We know what that is when we cannot save the people that we love.
02:40To feel powerless.
02:43And Marlene certainly does in that moment.
02:45Because Ellie is the child of her best friend since childhood.
02:50Who she had to execute.
02:56It's something that Neil told me about early on and it made my jaw drop and I said we must
03:01do that.
03:02And that's how we begin our final episode.
03:10There's this moment and we really just follow the game here very closely because it's so beautiful where they encounter
03:17a giraffe.
03:18It's a joyful moment for Ellie and for Joel seeing Ellie finally be
03:22a glimmer of who she used to be after the trauma that she faced.
03:26Everything that she'd experienced hasn't just gone away.
03:30It's just this moment of beauty.
03:31So precious it's almost sad.
03:33But then from speaking to Craig I realized it was just living the truth of it.
03:37Which was it was a bit of sweet.
03:39But still so so beautiful.
03:42So fucking cool.
03:46There's just a moment of awe and wonder in this world still.
03:49And the beauty of it is such that we understand why the ice melts between them.
03:55He's still trying to keep her with him.
03:58And saying we don't have to keep going.
04:00We just take you back with me.
04:01And she's saying no we have to go out and finish it.
04:05We finished what we started.
04:10I get emotional just thinking about it because it's their closest moment where Joel finally tells her the true story
04:16about how he got his scar.
04:18And it was not because some guy shot at him.
04:20It's because he tried to kill himself and he missed.
04:23But he's glad he did.
04:25And she thinks she understands the lesson here.
04:28Which is you'll get over this.
04:29He lost a daughter.
04:30He was crushed.
04:32He wanted to end his own life.
04:33He didn't.
04:35So time heals all wounds I guess.
04:39It wasn't time that did it.
04:49In the hospital Marlene quickly realizes this is not the Joel she knew because he has an emotional connection to
04:56Ellie.
04:57You take me to her right now.
05:02It's about the way we treasure the people that we love more than everyone else.
05:07How love leads to emotions that can rage out of control.
05:12We've seen Joel kill.
05:14We've seen him lose loved ones.
05:15So how do you take that any further?
05:18What if it's between saving all of humanity or this one girl?
05:21It's the easiest choice he's ever made in his life.
05:29What would make one choose one thing over the survival of humanity essentially?
05:37Which is something that he does because he finds himself incapable of losing again.
05:44I won't let you take her.
05:47Unhook her.
05:50Move!
05:54Turn around.
06:00We can't keep her safe forever.
06:03No matter how hard you try.
06:05No matter how many people you kill.
06:10The parking garage is the last shot.
06:13It's the last opportunity to save what Ellie can gift the world.
06:17Joel, he is wrestling with his grief and he can't see past it.
06:24There's no limit to how much we could try to understand that.
06:28How much we could defend it or judge it.
06:30And it's this beautiful shadow that one can explore and question.
06:35Find the horror and the humanity of.
06:39This whole journey we've been working towards this trust that is forming between these two characters.
06:45And how honest they are with each other.
06:46And how much they learn to rely on each other.
06:48And then Joel puts all of that on the line.
06:50Like a parent, you feel like you need to lie to your children to protect them.
06:53And that's what Joel does at the very end.
06:56She knows deep down that he's not telling the truth.
06:58But she can't let herself believe it.
07:01Because it's too painful and it's too scary.
07:03The idea that the only purpose in life hasn't been fulfilled.
07:07That that had been taken away from her by the person that she loves and trusts the most.
07:12It's too overwhelming.
07:14So she forces herself to believe Joel.
07:17Swear to me that everything you said about the fireflies is true.
07:21I swear.
07:29Time doesn't really heal anything.
07:31It just makes it fade.
07:33But people heal things.
07:34And in that moment you understand the depth of what she means to him.
07:38And the horror of it all is that that's why the ending has to be the way it is.
07:43The ending is something that people have been arguing about for over a decade.
07:49Should Joel have done what he did?
07:50And a lot of people will say no.
07:52A lot of people will say yes.
07:54In the end, the only thing we can be sure of is that we understand why he did it.
07:58And we understand that Ellie would not have wanted him to do it.
08:01That complexity is why The Last of Us as a narrative is so gorgeous.
08:06It's why it's the most beautiful story told in the entire genre of video games.
08:12It's why Neil is a genius.
08:14And it's why I wanted to make the show in the first place.
08:17And we're going to make the show in the next.
08:20Who knows how good a show коммент up.
08:21Who knows how good a show went.
08:33Grazie a tutti.
