00:00A lot of people have said it's what they like about Kyle Crane is that he's not getting easily attached
00:05to people, that he's keeping his identity, that he's keeping kind of some distance from them, but he does little
00:11things, little touches where you see that he really cares about them.
00:22My name is Timon Smektała, I'm a franchise director for Dying Light, the leading zombie series in video gaming, and
00:28I'm here to talk about Dying Light The Beast, the new game in the series.
00:32Dying Light is a series that always was trying to present a very mature story of a zombie apocalypse, people
00:39trying to survive in it, and Kyle Crane, the main character that goes through an evolution over the events of
00:46the game.
00:46When the first game starts, he's basically being dropped into a city, quarantined because of the zombie outbreak that's happening
00:53inside, and he's just a simple mercenary that just tries to achieve his mission.
00:58He doesn't really care about anything else, he's just there, basically as a military specialist, he has his goal, he
01:04just wants to do that, and that's that.
01:06But then he is being helped by people, he realizes that he's being thrown into a nightmare, and he starts
01:12discovering that by himself he will not be able to achieve his goal, and he starts noticing those people around
01:19him, he starts noticing their problem, he starts helping them.
01:22And it's very interesting how in the first game, he gets from this basically one-man army commando to someone
01:28who cares about bigger community and becomes a leader of the community, a hero for that community.
01:41And now in Dying Light the Beast, he kind of forgot about the Dalit, he lost some of his previous
01:47beliefs.
01:47The tagline for Dying Light the Beast is they tried to break him, they created a beast, and it's a
01:52core to the whole experience.
01:54It consists of two parts.
01:56The first one is they tried to break him, and this refers to everything that we throw at the player,
02:01like the Baron, the main antagonist.
02:04He's really trying to hurt him, he's sending his army to chase Kyle, but also the environment is very hostile,
02:10this is a zombie apocalypse, it's a very challenging game, and basically everything is trying to break, and then the
02:16other part of the tagline is they created a beast, and it's all about unleashing your inner powers, unleashing the
02:23beast that's inside of you, turning the oppression, the pressure that you feel from the environment into your strength.
02:33So there are many moments in the game where you feel that unleashment of the beast's powers, it's most visible
02:39when you fight the chimeras.
02:43And chimeras are our boss battles, boss fights, where you face a very difficult to beat zombie mutations, big hulking
02:53monsters, and then basically its challenge is a clash between you as the beast and them as those monsters.
03:00And then when you defeat them, and especially if you defeat them using those beast-like powers, usually with very
03:06gory, very brutal, very visual finishers, this is something that really makes you feel, I am super powerful.
03:12I am really someone who is able to survive anything and face any challenge.
03:25When you are able to rip your enemies in half, this is something that's very kind of cathartic, very tingling
03:32feeling in your whole body basically.
03:40I think there's one very important aspect of it is that we are talking about rage and anger and all
03:46of those are quite negative feelings.
03:48But actually in the game, Kyle Crane is using those feelings for a greater good.
03:53He's using that to take revenge for the Baron, but it's not really about the revenge, it's about overthrowing this
03:59character, this person that rules the whole open world, the whole valley where the game takes place.
04:04And also along the way, Kyle Crane meets a number of people that also feel oppressed by him.
04:10So by channeling, releasing his anger, he's actually helping those people to get free, get rid of Baron as a
04:16character.
04:22The biggest challenge for us when creating this character and thinking about his evolution was paying respect to our community
04:29and to what they expect from the character.
04:31What we are dealing here with is emotions, memories of people that have played the game 10 years ago.
04:37And we realized that for many of them, this was actually a very important part of their lives.
04:42It was a game that left something in like in my life, in my memory.
04:46And when you deal with memories, with emotions of people, it's very like a delicate thing you are doing.
04:51It's very easy to kind of make a misstep. It's very easy to do something that goes against those memories.
04:57We really want to pay respect to the character to make sure that his legacy stands.
05:02Maybe you will disagree with some of the decisions that he's taking in the game, but we are really confident
05:08and really proud of the story that we have created.
05:10This is the version of Kyle Crane that we wanted to create.
05:14This is the version of the Kyle Crane that we wanted to have as a continuation of the legacy, the
05:19legend that was there before.
05:20And I just can't wait for players to actually get to experience that.
05:23But I don't understand.
05:25Grazie a tutti.
