00:00So Agnes, you're going to tell us the next update.
00:03I will soon.
00:06But first, I would actually love to take some time
00:09to talk about what we have learned from previous years
00:12because we have announced some features
00:14that we didn't manage to deliver.
00:16And it's important that we learn from that
00:18and that we take action from that.
00:21So, for example, this year we will only show features
00:24that have come very, very far in the development process
00:27because with Minecraft Live, we want to celebrate
00:31this lovely game together with our amazing community
00:35and we want to create player dreams.
00:38So when we show new things, we want to inspire the players.
00:42And I remember for myself, a long time ago,
00:44before I worked here, I used to watch Minecons
00:48and I remember seeing new things.
00:50I'm like, ah, I want to build this thing with this block.
00:52I want to go on this adventure.
00:54And we want to give these kind of dreams to our players.
00:58And then it's so important that we feel 100% confident
01:01that we really can deliver on these dreams.
01:04Yeah, and I mean, it feels like we would tell everything
01:07at Minecraft Live and then you had to just keep up with that.
01:11You couldn't add anything or kind of change things.
01:14Yes.
01:14So, like in recent years, we showed like the full update almost
01:18and then we were just chasing it for the rest of the development process
01:21and it, well, it caused stress.
01:23So this year, we think we will have time to really like iterate
01:28on the features together with the community, of course,
01:31and also to add features that we haven't showed yet,
01:34like that we haven't showed today.
01:36Because like we know, we already have so many ideas
01:38and also during the development process,
01:40both us and the community, so many ideas are going to pop up.
01:43And those are also often very, very charming.
01:45So we're happy that we will have like more time
01:47to really explore this update together.
01:50Yeah, I love it.
01:51It lets the team be more creative.
01:53It lets us be creative with the community
01:55and like kind of see where the path takes us.
01:58And also, it's really exciting to get to hear new things
02:02like throughout the year too.
02:03So I'm excited, just like what's happening, what's happening.
02:05But what can you tell us about the update?
02:08I mean, I can tell quite many things,
02:11but actually, first I want to tell you that
02:13we have decided to not name it yet.
02:16So for now, we will call it the 120 update
02:19and it will be released in 2023.
02:22And the reason for that is that we want to shape it
02:25like throughout the development process
02:27together with the community.
02:28because like Minecraft, it's some kind of like magic
02:33almost to Minecraft.
02:34And I think one of the key things that creates this magic
02:37is that Minecraft is community fueled.
02:40Absolutely.
02:42We both came from the community before.
02:45So let's name it when we all feel ready to do that.
02:49But you do have a theme.
02:51So like some things to think about.
02:54We do know what we want to achieve with update
02:56and we have a vision, we just want to be like flexible enough
02:59so the community can be part of shaping it.
03:02And what we want to do with this update
03:05is that we want to make Minecraft, Minecraftier.
03:09Perfect.
03:10It makes sense, right?
03:11Absolutely.
03:12And we want to do that by focusing on like certain parts
03:16of what Minecraft is.
03:18And those are like the creativity,
03:20it's like self-expression and intrinsic motivation.
03:25So what we want to do with Minecraft,
03:27we want to inspire and enable players
03:30to be creative in their own ways
03:31and to express themselves in their own
03:33like unique, beautiful ways.
03:35And in this update, like one way we want to do that
03:38is to enable self-expression through representation.
03:42And I think it's so beautiful
03:43because, you know, being able to do what you want
03:46in Minecraft is the core of what it is.
03:48So I'm really excited that this also lets us shape it
03:51with the community and all of you being creative.
03:53So we do have some awesome features to show.
03:57We have.
03:57And our first guest, Qi, is here to help us show them.
04:01Welcome, Qi.
04:03Hey.
04:04It's your first Minecraft Live.
04:07Yes.
04:08And can you tell everyone what you do at Mojang?
04:11Well, I love to play the game at Mojang.
04:14I'm a fan, but I'm a 3D artist on Minecraft.
04:18And you've worked on some super cool animations for the game.
04:22Everything from like really scary, like the warden.
04:25Yeah.
04:26And really cute, like the frogs.
04:28Yeah.
04:28Oh, they're so adorable.
04:29They just, you know, their stroll is very iconic.
04:33Thank you.
04:34You're so good at it.
04:34Like when, for example, when I see the frogs,
04:37like, it really makes me feel something.
04:39You're so good at it.
04:40Oh, thank you.
04:41I'm so glad to hear it.
04:42So, I have a creator question to kick things off for the two of you.
05:04She really likes sauce and Easter egg that we had in there. That's amazing. That's lovely.
05:10And yes, we are adding new default skins.
05:13And default skins, that's like Alex and Steve.
05:16So, we see them as like placeholders for the players.
05:19And our goal with Minecraft is always that everyone should feel
05:23equally welcome in the game.
05:25And for us, this is like one step towards reaching that goal.
05:33is also a good shot.
05:40So, I'm going to do the game.
05:44So, we must be able to throw up the game.
05:53So, I want to do the game.
05:53So, I'm going to do this.
05:54And you are going to let me know.
06:12Grazie a tutti.
06:41Grazie a tutti.
07:01Grazie a tutti.
07:04Grazie a tutti.
07:09Grazie a tutti.
07:10Grazie a tutti.
07:20Grazie a tutti.
07:25Grazie a tutti.
07:27Grazie a tutti.
07:35Grazie a tutti.
08:02Grazie a tutti.
09:06Grazie a tutti.
10:38Grazie a tutti.
10:40Grazie a tutti.
12:10Grazie a tutti.
13:13Grazie a tutti.
13:16Grazie a tutti.
13:24Grazie a tutti.
13:54Thank you.
14:26Grazie a tutti.
14:35Grazie a tutti.
16:05So using a comparator, you're actually going to pull a redstone signal
16:10that's going to tell you what is the last book that was interacted with.
16:13And there's many uses for that.
16:15But personally, I'm going to make some secret bookshelves doorways
16:19and hide something in there.
16:22What are you going to hide?
16:23Probably my Agnes poster fans.
16:28You see, she doesn't need to know.
16:31Hi there.
16:32And Agnes, your storytelling.
16:34So how would you use that to tell stories?
16:37The secret place?
16:39There's so many opportunities to tell stories.
16:41The first idea that just pop up, I want to build a castle
16:44and I want an evil queen to live in this castle
16:47and then she can hide secret things.
16:50Like a spiral staircase down to a dungeon or something like that?
16:53That is so cool.
16:54It would be really cool.
16:55I want to make an escape room.
16:56Because then you're like, try and maybe the gold labs are in the book.
16:59Actually, no, I want someone in the community to do that
17:02and then I want to play it.
17:03That sounds better.
17:04That's going to get you.
17:05That's probably being made right now.
17:07Yes, exactly.
17:08It would be awesome.
17:09And I mean, like a lot of the other things,
17:11you have this storytelling aspect,
17:12but then it's also like, they're really beautiful.
17:16They're really, really good to decorate with.
17:18So I love, they really have like a fantasy, historical feel to them.
17:22And that's actually a feel we want for all of Minecraft.
17:24And have you noticed the top texture?
17:28No.
17:29So you can see it like on the floor there.
17:31On the floor, Agnes.
17:34I'm going to talk a lot about floors today.
17:36It works quite well in the walls as well.
17:38But it's also very pretty as a floor.
17:41Okay.
17:42Floors are important.
17:43I mean, I think that's the cool thing whenever we get any new blocks in the game.
17:47It's like being able to use them in different ways.
17:49So you can use them as the chiseled bookshelf,
17:52or you can be like, these are the best floors you've ever seen.
17:55Like the bookshelves and the band on the side.
17:58Yeah, exactly.
17:58All the block combinations.
18:00And I'm sure the community is going to come up with so many more things than us.
18:03It's kind of amazing.
18:03And you have one more thing to tell us about.
18:07Yes.
18:07That's actually a feature that's quite close to my heart
18:10because I grew up interacting a lot with these.
18:14So maybe it's time to take a look at some camels.
19:02Those are awesome.
19:04Tell us more about camels.
19:06Yeah.
19:07So like I said, they're really close to my heart
19:09because I remember growing up, going on field trips
19:13and sort of seeing them and riding them.
19:15And I actually have a really distinct memory
19:18of being this small kid on this huge animal
19:21and sitting on them when on the ground.
19:23And when they gave up, camels don't really just get up immediately.
19:27They're like indecisive, rocking back and forth sort of thing.
19:30And that was a terrifying experience as a kid,
19:33but so amazing as well.
19:35And we talked about how this update is a lot about self-expression
19:38through representation.
19:40And I just love that so many more people now around the world
19:43can sort of see an experience they remember
19:45and experience from their life in the game.
19:47Yeah, and share it with someone who maybe hasn't experienced it.
19:50Because that was the thing I really loved
19:53during the development process of camels
19:54because you had talked so much about like your experiences
19:57as a child and how tall the camels is
20:00and how they stand up in this like super weird way.
20:03And then when I got to play with them in the game,
20:06I'm like, it feels like you told me about
20:09and I thought that was cool.
20:10That's really cool.
20:11Okay, and Agnes, here's a hard-hitting question for you.
20:14Camels, horses, why both?
20:17Well, this is an important question.
20:20So we want to keep update Minecraft for like a lifetime,
20:24for 50 years or more.
20:26And that means that each thing we add
20:29needs to really fit within the Minecraft ecosystem.
20:32And this is of course true for camels as well.
20:35And since camels are a rideable mob
20:37and horses are too, it was very important for us
20:40to really create a unique experience.
20:42Yeah, we worked quite hard on that,
20:45trying to find a different niche in the game for both
20:47and really make the experience different and unique.
20:51And there's many differences.
20:53For example, horse are quite agile.
20:56Strifing right and left is really quick in Minecraft.
20:58And camels are quite big animals,
21:01so they're a bit slower.
21:02But if you find a long stretch, like a straight stretch,
21:06maybe a relatively flat ground, like in deserts,
21:09you can get quite fast actually.
21:11And that's helped by this new ability
21:13that they have called the dash.
21:15So using the dash, you can clear ravines
21:18or even rivers, which we all know
21:20are the enemy of horses in Minecraft.
21:22That is really cool.
21:24And another unique thing with the camels
21:26is that you can be two players on it at the same time.
21:30And there the two of you are.
21:31Yes!
21:31You can improve together.
21:32Oh, it's so nice.
21:33It's a lovely adventure in the Badlands.
21:34And we know that many of our players
21:36really in order to play together with their friends.
21:39So it feels good to add a feature
21:40where you really can go on an adventure together.
21:43Yes.
21:44Now I'm happy that if we added it,
21:46finally Agnes might invite me to play somewhere.
21:49Maybe.
21:51Of course I will.
21:53And I mean, they're great for storytelling.
21:55And you have this like,
21:56okay, I'm taking you on an adventure,
21:59come see what I'm doing.
22:00But you also, you know...
22:01There's another side to that.
22:03Yeah, exactly.
22:03I think that duality is really, really interesting
22:05because like we said,
22:07when you ride with them,
22:07you're with a friend,
22:08you're on an adventure.
22:09It's very sort of storytelling, adventure-y.
22:11But there's another side
22:12because you can actually sprint with camels
22:15and they go quite a bit faster when you do.
22:18So for example,
22:19in an action scenario at night,
22:21you can be out with your friend
22:22and Agnes, for example,
22:24is using the camel and moving around
22:25and dashing out of danger.
22:27and I'm with a bow can sort of shoot
22:28and attack behind.
22:29And that collaboration,
22:30I think, is really, really cool.
22:32And as you can see here,
22:34the many mobs can't reach us
22:36because the camel is so tall.
22:38Yes.
22:40Finally, I get to feel how it is to be tall.
22:43I see.
22:44I know, but when they're not attacking you,
22:46they actually look quite cute,
22:48I think, zombies.
22:50A little bit cute.
22:52Maybe ugly cute.
22:54Yeah, I mean,
22:54I think that
22:56I'm definitely going to be the one,
22:58you know,
22:58like hopefully driving the camel.
23:01I don't want to be the one aiming the bow,
23:04but I do.
23:04I mean, it's really cool.
23:05It adds a lot,
23:06especially to be able to,
23:08you know,
23:08maybe you're doing a little both.
23:10You're having a nice stroll
23:11and then you're like,
23:12it turned night.
23:14Let's fight together.
23:16But I mean,
23:17I have to point out
23:18that they're also just
23:19incredibly cute.
23:20They are,
23:21and especially
23:22they are ugly cute,
23:23I think.
23:24Dope.
23:26Yeah,
23:26and as we can see,
23:27we also have camel babies
23:29because you can breed them.
23:30And something pretty interesting
23:32is that the item
23:32you're going to use
23:33to feed and breed them
23:34is actually a cactus.
23:36And I thought that was
23:37so interesting
23:38when we like
23:39researched camels.
23:40I didn't know
23:41that real world camels
23:43eat cactus.
23:44Yeah,
23:44I've seen many videos
23:46of camels eating cactus.
23:48I thought it was really,
23:49really interesting.
23:50And also,
23:51cactus is sort of an item
23:52that doesn't have
23:52too many uses in the game.
23:54So it's always nice,
23:54again,
23:55being respectful
23:55of old features,
23:57sort of adding more uses to it.
23:58That's really awesome.
23:59Nir,
24:00thank you so much
24:00for telling us
24:02about those amazing features.
24:04Thanks for having me.
24:04Thank you, Nir.
24:05On October 27th,
24:06during Minecraft Now,
24:07you'll be able to hear more
24:09about these cool new features.
24:11And Agnes,
24:12you have one surprise for us.
24:15Yes,
24:16we do have a surprise.
24:17So previous years,
24:19you have been able
24:20to playtest the new features
24:21like many, many months
24:22after live.
24:23But this year,
24:24we're very excited about this.
24:26This year,
24:27you will actually be able
24:28to playtest new features
24:29in betas,
24:30snapshots,
24:31and previews
24:31used a few days
24:33from now.
24:42We can't wait
24:43to hear what you think
24:44when you playtest
24:45these features
24:46in a few days.
24:47Like Agnes said,
24:48this is the start
24:49of features
24:49for Update 1.20,
24:51and there will be more
24:52to come throughout the year.
24:55We'll be right back.
