00:17The Tower of Sisyphus
00:34The Tower of Sisyphus is our new Endless mode, which is intended to provide some new secrets, some new narrative
00:41content, and a new endless challenge for players to sink their teeth into.
00:53As you can see, the Tower has its own look and design as you climb up it, but as you'll
00:58see in the video, it changes quite rapidly too.
01:20Okay, we've arrived in the Tower Atrium.
01:23This is a place that you'll slowly see unlocks as you go through cycle by cycle and climb by climb.
01:30It's where we deliver some story.
01:32And what you're seeing right now is basically connected to where Selene is in the story.
01:37So if you play this and you've finished Returnal, Selene will react a bit differently in subtle ways.
01:42So this is still quite early on in Selene's journey on Atropos.
01:53So in the Tower of Sisyphus, we wanted to take the strongest elements of Returnal's combat and distill them into
02:00a very focused package full of intense action.
02:04Similar to a lot of the Endless modes we've made in the past, the Tower of Sisyphus also tracks your
02:09progress from room to room and phase to phase.
02:12And there's also a score that will measure your success in each run.
02:17And in order to get the best possible score, you have a multiplier that you need to keep alive as
02:22well.
02:23This will be a very familiar element to players who have been accustomed with our previous games.
02:29And we felt this is a great way to add some depth and replayability to Returnal through a familiar package,
02:36but with an entirely new twist.
02:37Yeah, when Harry talked to me about this expansion, I thought the idea of creating this infinite, sort of endless
02:43place where you could constantly climb was really great.
02:46And looking forward to you seeing more and more of it as you go ahead.
02:57Yeah, in terms of combat, you will have, of course, some moments of respite as well.
03:02So the rooms and the progression through the Tower will be, of course, procedurally generated, or each run is guaranteed
03:09to be unique.
03:10And you will find different treasure rooms, different surprises, a lot of secrets, and a lot of different scenarios that
03:19will challenge you and give you different types of rewards.
03:37The structure of the Tower is fairly straightforward.
03:40You advance to a new room, you have to dispatch the collection of enemies that appear,
03:45and once that's done, you have an opportunity to go to the Translocator for the next level as fast as
03:52possible.
03:53Doing so will give you a significant bonus to your Obolites and to your Squirrel Multiplier.
03:59Yeah, as you could see, if you got there in time, whilst the Translocator was glowing with Obolites, you would
04:05have gotten a bonus.
04:06Oh, what happened here?
04:07Yeah, so that's an entirely new enemy that we have there as well.
04:11So if you do actually manage to chase that guy down and destroy it in time, it will open a
04:17portal to these bonus rooms.
04:20However, these rooms may have their own surprises.
04:23They won't always be favorable for the player.
04:26So there's a little bit of this risk-reward element associated with making that decision.
04:49We've been really happy to see the reception that Eternal has gained with the community.
04:56And players have responded really, really positively to the core combat and the second-to-second gameplay.
05:03And we really wanted to just build an entire mode around celebrating that and also rewarding skill for players and
05:11just seeing how high you can get in the Tower of Sisyphus.
05:14Much like the myth of Sisyphus, you are destined to keep pushing the boulder up as high as you can.
05:20But death is inevitable.
05:23You will reach a point where the odds are stacked so unfavorably against you that progressing will require tremendous amount
05:30of skill and dedication.
05:33So we'll be actually really excited to start seeing how far players can get.
05:48Here we're introducing a new weapon called the Discorger.
05:51This is one of the many superweapons that you will find.
05:54And these act a little bit differently to your usual weapons in the sense that you have very limited use
06:00of them as consumables.
06:02And these will unleash tremendous firepower that can make a big difference in life-or-death situations.
06:11So collecting these and unleashing them in strategic moments can actually be a really big benefit for players who want
06:17to get as far as possible in the Tower.
06:20It's also a cosmic, organic sort of weapon.
06:23As you can see, this is the Blight Wave Discorger and it has and unleashes a massive amount of force
06:29and attack.
06:30But, as Harry said, you need to choose wisely when to use it.
06:39Yeah, and you can keep stacking these as you keep collecting them.
06:43And in the beginning, as you get acquainted with the content, you will likely be reaching for these a bit
06:49more frequently.
06:50Here we go.
06:51So here's a quick example of how these superweapons can really decimate your enemies.
06:59But you can stack these, and in the beginning you'll probably use them a bit earlier.
07:04But as you gain more skill in the mode and you gain access to more advanced phases,
07:09you might find yourself stacking them up and saving them for later phases where the odds will be significantly more
07:16stacked against you.
07:17So this looks quite a bit ominous, actually.
07:21And there's some rewards stacked up here.
07:24So let's see what this all means for the player.

08:38And do something pretty special and completely simulated
08:46And once again, you can't see it now, but I have a huge smile on my face
08:50Just looking at all the glorious bullet patterns
08:52Just feeling the playfield
08:55Aside from, of course, the engaging challenge that they provide
08:58I think they do create their own unique aesthetic

10:39to actually check out the leaderboards, which is where you can see your highest score

13:20As you can see it's another first person experience
13:22Unlike the house though, you can return to the hospital once it is available
13:26and re-examine things and try to find the secrets within
13:34We're just gonna jump ahead to show you a little bit of Phase 2 as well

14:17At the end of each phase you'll get an opportunity to visit the Fabricator, where you'll get
14:22a chance to use all of the hard earned obolites that you've accumulated.
14:27Here as you're familiar with you'll be able to purchase a variety of different items that
14:31will help you ascend higher into the tower.
14:57As you can see the tower has evolved as you ascend as well, so it's not how it was at
15:02the beginning, but there is another phase with that we will not show you.

15:35The tower of Sisyphus will also constantly challenge you and challenge you further and
15:40further the higher you climb.
15:42The higher you climb, obviously the higher the simulation score you can receive, but the
15:47risk of going up is prevalent.
15:57So the key to getting the best possible score is of course keeping your multiplier up.
16:02As you can see on the right now, when you're not actually engaging in combat, after a while
16:08the multiplier will start to deplete.
16:10So the mod is designed to maintain some forward momentum and keep that engagement going.
16:29One of the new encounters that you'll have in the tower of Sisyphus are these rooms where
16:34you will have these pre-charged fabricators where you have to choose one out of two options.
16:39Anyone you choose, the other one will disappear.
16:42So you'll have to choose wisely and make sure that they are helping your strategy in getting
16:47farther into the mode.
16:49Now we've picked up a parasite and the other one disappeared.
16:52And there's actually a new type of parasite as well to be discovered if you play into the
16:57heights of the tower.
17:00The tower also features a lot of different hostiles that you would have accounted across
17:04Atropos.
17:05Be prepared for that as well.
17:06Yeah, in some ways it's kind of like a Greatest Hits remix right, so we've identified what
17:12were the strongest combat scenarios in the main game with a lot of the varied enemies that
17:18we have across all of our biomes.
17:20And here in the tower of Sisyphus you'll get to encounter them all in entirely new configurations
17:25and some increasingly challenging scenarios.
17:29And also expect Algoth to be haunting you throughout your ascent.
