00:00Quando you play through Elden Ring,
00:01you'll inevitably run up against bosses
00:03or areas that will humble you.
00:06In these moments, it's important to remember
00:07that these obstacles are often there by design.
00:10They do not block the path,
00:12they are the path.
00:13Through skill, or creativity,
00:15or just by coming back later,
00:17you can overcome any obstacle in this game,
00:19and this video will give you all the tools you need
00:22to do so.
00:23Before you do anything else, you should try to master
00:25the basics of combat.
00:27At the core of combat is your stamina bar.
00:29This resource is depleted
00:31when you perform the actions necessary
00:33for fighting. For example,
00:35sprinting, dodging,
00:37blocking attacks,
00:38attacking, all of these things
00:40and more, require stamina.
00:43Next, let's talk about the proper
00:45flow of combat. While locked on
00:47with R3, keep your shield raised
00:49with L1. This will prevent
00:51damage from any attacks that are too fast
00:53for you to react to. As you block
00:55them, your stamina bar will be depleted,
00:57so make sure to drop your shield
00:59in between attacks in order to regain
01:01that stamina faster.
01:03Now, blocking fast attacks
01:05often doesn't deplete too much of your stamina,
01:08but blocking slow attacks
01:09is often a different story,
01:11and a lot of them can easily break
01:13your guard, leaving you wide open.
01:15Thus, if you think you can anticipate
01:17a slow attack or a series of attacks,
01:19it's often better to roll
01:21through them instead. Rolls
01:24have invincibility frames that
01:25nullify all damage if you press
01:27the roll button around the instant
01:29where you would have been hit. And while
01:31this is more difficult to do than blocking,
01:34avoiding damage in this way is
01:35way more stamina efficient than just blocking.
01:38Oh, and make sure that you stay below
01:4070% equipment load as well,
01:42so that your rolls stay
01:43fast and effective.
01:45As you fight an enemy,
01:47pay special attention to their animations
01:49and try to memorize their moveset.
01:51Over time, you will learn
01:53the best way to avoid certain attacks
01:55and where their openings lie.
01:57So learn to fight with a mixture
01:59of both blocks and rolls.
02:01As a general rule, you should block
02:03fast attacks and roll through slow attacks.
02:05By fighting efficiently
02:07in this way, you'll avoid damage
02:09and still have stamina left over
02:11to deal damage while the boss
02:13or enemy is left open.
02:16A new way to deal damage in Elden Ring
02:17is with guard counters,
02:19which are a core part of Elden Ring's
02:21combat and essentially allow you
02:23to weaponize your own defense.
02:25So shortly after successfully blocking
02:27an attack, you can retaliate
02:29by tapping R2 and performing
02:31a guard counter attack.
02:33These counters are extremely powerful.
02:35If you recognize an opportunity
02:37to safely perform one, you should.
02:39They deal great damage and
02:41and many lesser enemies will immediately
02:43have their super armor broken,
02:45opening them up for a critical attack
02:47with R1.
02:49But what is super armor?
02:50Well, it's an invisible meter
02:52that enemies and bosses have.
02:54It depletes when they take damage
02:56and when you fully deplete this meter
02:58and break their super armor,
03:00you can perform a critical attack
03:02by tapping R1.
03:05As a rule of thumb, any R2 attack
03:07will do more super armor damage.
03:09Jumping R2 attacks do a lot,
03:12running R2 attacks are great too,
03:14but fully charged R2 attacks
03:16seem to do the most.
03:18Also worth noting is that
03:19super armor regenerates over time.
03:22Therefore, it's important that
03:23you continually deal damage to your enemies.
03:26If you sense a boss is close
03:28to breaking point, go on the offensive
03:30with your R2 attacks.
03:31Try to do a lot of super armor damage
03:34in a short period of time.
03:36Often, you'll be rewarded.
03:37On the other hand, if you're just looking
03:40to do consistent damage,
03:42well, tapping R1 is probably
03:43the way to go.
03:45R1 attacks generally come out much faster,
03:48they combo longer,
03:49and they're not as risky to perform.
03:51And if you really want to prioritize
03:53damage over defense,
03:55then you can two-hand your weapon.
03:57The input for this is to hold triangle
03:59or Y, and tap R1
04:01or L1 to two-hand your right-hand
04:03item or left-hand item,
04:05respectively.
04:06In addition to granting you a new moveset,
04:09you'll have more strength,
04:10more damage,
04:11more super armor damage,
04:13and you can often avoid recoil
04:15when striking an enemy's shield.
04:17So if your shield just isn't helping
04:19much with an encounter,
04:20consider two-handing for damage instead.
04:23While you two-hand,
04:24you'll mostly be dodging for defense in this state.
04:27That said, it's worth noting
04:29that you can still block while two-handing,
04:31and while you'll take some chip damage
04:33because a weapon isn't as good
04:35as a shield is for blocking,
04:37it's still a good idea to block in many situations
04:39or at least to keep your guard up,
04:41especially if you want to utilize guard counters.
04:44Another offensive alternative
04:46to two-handing is power stancing,
04:48which can be achieved by equipping
04:50two weapons of the same class,
04:52one in each hand.
04:53With this, you'll get access to a special L1 attack
04:56that utilizes both weapons.
04:58Just like your R1 attacks,
05:00your L1 attacks do a combo of strikes,
05:03and can be utilized in jumping attacks as well.
05:06Speaking of jumping attacks,
05:08they're incredible gap closers,
05:10allowing you to cover distance
05:12and queue an attack simultaneously.
05:14If an enemy is left open,
05:16but you're kind of far away,
05:17just close the distance with a jumping attack
05:19and see how effective they can be.
05:22Jumping R1 attacks are generally better
05:24for flying or mounted enemies,
05:26and jumping R2 attacks are generally better
05:28if you want to inflict damage
05:30and posture damage upon grounded enemies.
05:33Damage can be healed with your flask of crimson tears,
05:37which will always replenish when you warp
05:39or sit at a grace checkpoint.
05:41Additionally, you can get extra flask charges
05:44by clearing out a group of enemies,
05:46or by defeating these small red creatures.
05:50At grace checkpoints,
05:51you can upgrade your flask with golden seeds
05:53and sacred tears.
05:55Golden seeds are found at minor erd trees
05:57and increase the amount of flasks you can carry.
06:00Sacred tears are found at churches of Marica,
06:04and increase the amount healed by your flasks.
06:07Furthermore, you can balance the allotment
06:09of crimson flasks versus cerulean flasks
06:13at a point of grace,
06:14to better suit your needs.
06:16To quickly access your crimson healing flask
06:19at any time, consider making it the first item
06:22on your quick select bar.
06:23This way, if you hold down on the D-pad,
06:25you'll always shortcut to it instantly.
06:28At the top of the D-pad,
06:29you'll be able to cycle through your current selection of spells.
06:33New spells can be memorized at a site of grace.
06:36These spells will either be incantations,
06:39which must be cast with an equipped seal,
06:42or sorceries, which must be cast with an equipped staff.
06:45Cycle through your equipped armaments
06:47by pressing left or right on the D-pad.
06:50If you die, then you'll drop all of your runes
06:53at your point of death.
06:54If you don't pick them up during your next life,
06:56then they'll be gone forever.
06:58Make sure to seek them out using your compass
07:00whenever you can,
07:01or invest them in items or your own character.
07:05When you do die,
07:06you can choose to resurrect at a site of grace,
07:09or sometimes at a stake of Marica.
07:11If you see this statue,
07:13or this icon,
07:14then it's probably an indication
07:16that you're in a difficult area,
07:17or near a boss,
07:19as a stake of Marica is nearby.
07:21Respawning at a stake of Marica
07:23will usually make your run back to your runes
07:26less severe,
07:27so it's often best to choose that option,
07:29unless you'd prefer to move on from what killed you.
07:32If you're out in the open world,
07:34one way to overcome difficulty
07:35is by choosing the right scenarios
07:37to fight on your mount.
07:39Against large or mounted enemies
07:41that struggle against hit-and-run tactics,
07:44the mount is definitely the way to go.
07:46While mounted,
07:48R1 and R2 give you light and heavy attacks
07:51on the right side,
07:52and L1 and L2 give light and heavy attacks
07:55on your left side.
07:56If you hold your heavy attack input,
07:59then you can charge them up,
08:00dealing continuous damage while you charge,
08:03which culminates in a strong attack
08:04at the end.
08:06While mounted, you automatically wield the armament
08:08in your right hand.
08:09If you would prefer to wield the armament
08:12in your left hand, use a two-handing input.
08:15So, hold triangle or Y,
08:17and then tap L1 or R1.
08:19Your mount can take damage separately from you,
08:22but his damage can be healed by your crimson flasks,
08:25as well as by craftable roa raisins.
08:28As you get hit on your mount,
08:29you run the risk of losing your own super armor
08:32and getting knocked down for an extended period of time.
08:35If this happens,
08:36you are extremely vulnerable.
08:38If you're taking damage,
08:40then at a certain point,
08:41no matter what you're fighting,
08:42it's probably wise to dismount
08:45and fight them on foot for a little while.
08:47Jumping attacks off your horse
08:49are a great way to transition into melee combat.
08:51dismount with L3
08:53and slam them with L1, R1 or R2.
08:56The distance you cover with this is absurd,
08:58and initiating a fight in this way
09:00gives you an immediate advantage.
09:03As the fight goes on,
09:04consider if mounting up again
09:06for a burst of speed
09:07would be to your benefit.
09:09Against this flying dragon, for example,
09:11certain attacks are better off being outpaced
09:14on a mount.
09:15For a reliable way to mount up quickly,
09:18I would recommend binding your
09:20spectral steed whistle to your pouch,
09:22a secondary d-pad menu
09:24that can be edited in the menu screen.
09:26You can quickly access all four
09:28of these bindings by holding down triangle
09:30or Y, then tapping the appropriate
09:32d-pad button.
09:33This way, you'll have a consistent input
09:35for mounting up, instead of toggling rapidly
09:38through your items looking for your whistle.
09:40This same logic applies to any
09:42other item you want quick, reliable
09:44access to, like weapon buffs
09:46or poison cures.
09:47In addition to your double jump
09:49for extra height, be on the lookout
09:51for spirit springs, which take you
09:53to incredible heights.
09:55Conversely, you can safely jump into
09:57a spirit spring to negate all fall damage.
10:00While on your mount, L3
10:02dismounts you, but when on foot,
10:04L3 can be used for stealth.
10:06In this crouched state,
10:08enemy aggro range is reduced,
10:10and you'll have an easier time getting
10:11R1 backstabs.
10:13Enemy aggro range is also reduced
10:15at night, so consider passing
10:17time at a Site of Grace
10:18to better suit your needs.
10:20At night, however, you might also find
10:22different enemies spawning in the world,
10:25so be aware of that.
10:26Another thing to get in the habit of is
10:28crafting, which you can do as soon as you buy
10:30the crafting kit from Kalei
10:32at the Church of Ela.
10:34After this, the crafting tab in your menu screen
10:37will unlock for use.
10:38After a few hours of play, you should have
10:40accumulated a few recipe books
10:42to expand your crafting options,
10:44and if you've been hunting and foraging
10:46between bosses, then you'll be
10:48able to make a lot of great items.
10:51Pay attention to what material
10:52drops you're finding in the world.
10:54It'll make it that tiny bit easier to
10:56gather more of it when you realize you
10:58need it to craft something specific.
11:00The crafting page gives you hints
11:02at where to find specific materials,
11:04and most world materials
11:06respawn instantly upon resting
11:08at a grace, making them fairly
11:10easy to farm.
11:11Oh, and while you're at Kalei, grab a torch
11:13to help you see in dark caves,
11:15and when you find one of Kalei's
11:17fellow merchants on a beach southwest
11:20of the Church of Ela, grab a bow
11:22as well. Ranged weapons
11:24are excellent utility tools,
11:26allowing you to lure, poison,
11:28or sleep enemies from afar.
11:30There are two types of bow
11:32weapons, bows and crossbows,
11:34which use arrows or bolts
11:36respectively. Enter precision
11:38aiming mode with L1 while two-handing
11:40the bow, and press R1
11:42to fire the projectile in the first slot,
11:44and R2 to fire the projectile
11:46in the second slot. So,
11:48thinking creatively, with craftable items
11:50or using utility items
11:52like bows, that's a great way
11:54to overcome difficulty, but
11:56sometimes you might just feel like your
11:58damage is too low. And in that
12:00situation, you'll have to reinforce
12:02your weapon, which can be done at the
12:04Church of Ela at the smithing table.
12:06Here, you'll be able to get most
12:08armaments to plus three,
12:10with smithing stone shards that are
12:12found throughout the world. That said,
12:14special armaments require other
12:16special shards, and to go
12:18beyond plus three, you'll need to
12:20find an actual blacksmith.
12:22Alternatively, if you aren't happy with
12:24your shield, take a look at its stats.
12:26The most reliable shields are those
12:28that block a hundred percent physical
12:29damage, but you can consider
12:31switching shields to suit specific
12:33encounters. The other stat you'll want
12:35to look at is guard boost.
12:37Higher guard boost means you'll take
12:39less of a stamina hit when you block.
12:42Upgrading an armament is
12:44a bit of a commitment. You can always
12:45find more smithing stone shards in
12:47caves and around the world, but
12:49these are fairly rare, so make sure
12:52you really enjoy swinging a weapon
12:54before you upgrade it. Of course,
12:56a weapon also has to suit your
12:58build. Your build is determined
13:00by what stats you decide to level
13:02at a grace checkpoint when you
13:03summon Melina and invest your
13:05runes with her. When you start the
13:07game, you'll have to choose a starting
13:09character. Some use magic, some have
13:11ranged weapons, and some excel in
13:14melee, but it's important to remember
13:15that your starting class does not
13:17dictate your build. You do.
13:19While each character's starting
13:21stats give them different strengths
13:23and weaknesses, you are free to
13:25build your character in any direction
13:27from this point. If you haven't
13:29settled on a build yet, then you
13:31can't go too wrong by just leveling
13:33vigor for HP and resistance,
13:36endurance for stamina and
13:37equipment load, or mind
13:39to increase your focus points.
13:41But it's the other stats that make a
13:43real impact on your character archetype.
13:46Strength, for example,
13:47mostly affects your ability to
13:49wield heavy armaments, as well as
13:51your defense. Strength weapons are
13:53often slow, so being a lot more
13:54tanky will come in handy. Another
13:57stat to look out for is poise,
13:59which will raise as you put on
14:00heavier armor, and having high poise
14:02will often prevent you getting
14:04interrupted mid-attack, which is really
14:06good for slow weapons. Dexterity is
14:09the counterpart to strength, and it
14:11raises your ability to wield a lot
14:13of lighter armaments, boosting
14:14their attack power. It also softens
14:17fall damage, makes it harder for you
14:18to be knocked off your horse, and
14:20reduces the casting time of spells.
14:23Spells usually scale in damage
14:25with intelligence or faith.
14:27Intelligence generally boosts
14:29the damage of sorceries, while
14:30faith generally boosts the damage
14:32and healing of incantations.
14:35Arcane is also a new attribute
14:37in Elden Ring, and it governs
14:38your discovery stat, which
14:40increases enemy item drop rates.
14:42It's also a stat that increases the
14:44damage of certain sorceries and
14:46incantations, and can play into
14:48the stat scaling of certain weapons
14:50as well. Every weapon comes with
14:53a default scaling, and your
14:54favorite weapon will really influence
14:56which build you end up going with.
14:58However, one thing you can do is
15:00apply an Ash of War to your weapon,
15:02which allows you to choose a
15:04more beneficial damage type, and
15:06more beneficial scaling options
15:08for that weapon. Beyond their scaling
15:10options though, Ashes of War can be
15:12used to apply skills to your
15:14armaments. Once applied, L2
15:16will unleash their effects,
15:18and you can always see which skill you
15:20will perform with L2 here.
15:22To apply an Ash of War,
15:24be sure to pick up the whetstone knife
15:26in a cellar at the gatefront ruins.
15:28After this, sit at a grace checkpoint
15:30and experiment with your options.
15:32Often, these skills will default
15:34to your shield's applied Ash of War,
15:36unless you two-hand your weapon, or
15:38use a shield without a special skill.
15:41These attacks are very powerful,
15:43and even require a small amount
15:45of focus points to use.
15:47Your FP is represented
15:49here, in this blue bar.
15:50This is a really valuable resource,
15:53especially for magic builds
15:54which also rely on it to cast
15:56spells. That said, all
15:58builds can, and should,
16:00find a use for FP.
16:02And if you're having trouble,
16:04in Elden Ring, you should always be thinking
16:06of an effective way to make use
16:08of this resource.
16:10Another powerful way to make use of FP
16:11is by summoning spirits.
16:13Once you acquire the summoning bell,
16:15early in the game, you'll be able to equip
16:17spirits on your quick select bar,
16:19and summon them for difficult encounters.
16:21As long as you have enough FP,
16:23and as long as this Rebirth Monument
16:26symbol marks the encounter as difficult,
16:28then your spirits will fight
16:30alongside you until death.
16:32Some are ranged attackers, some are tanky,
16:34and some are a combination of both.
16:35Decide what works best for your build,
16:37and what works best for the encounter as well.
16:40Only one type of spirit
16:42can be summoned at a time,
16:44and spirits cannot be summoned during multiplayer.
16:46Speaking of multiplayer,
16:48if you're having trouble, be on the lookout
16:49for Furl Calling Finger Remedies,
16:52which you can find throughout the world.
16:54Once consumed, these allow you to see
16:56other players summon signs,
16:57and summon help for major encounters.
17:00That said, you'll always be able to see
17:02NPC summon signs,
17:03so feel free to make good use of them.
17:06Alternatively, other players' signs
17:08can be accessed in summoning pools
17:10located at summoning effigies
17:12that are placed in key areas.
17:14If you want to learn more about
17:16engaging in multiplayer,
17:17read the items on your multiplayer tab
17:19in the menu screen.
17:21In general, if there's a tip
17:22that you want to read again that popped up,
17:24you can find all of those
17:26in your inventory menu
17:28all the way at the end.
17:30Last, but not least, is your map.
17:32Revealing the map for an area
17:34will make it way easier
17:35to progress through the game.
17:37Map fragments can be collected
17:39at these glowing guide stels.
17:41If you're having trouble finding one
17:43in an unfamiliar area,
17:45try to stick to the main path,
17:46or, failing that, try to look for this shape
17:49on your undiscovered map.
17:51With the map open, you can mark
17:53points of interest with markers,
17:54or beacons that show up in the overworld.
17:57You can also fast travel between
17:58sites of lost grace,
