00:04Crocodiles are probably the most prehistoric looking creatures on the planet, and that's
00:08because their species has survived that long.
00:10But some creatures that might look like their relatives didn't.
00:13And now paleontologists say they may have discovered the ghostly remains of one of these
00:16Jurassic predators.
00:18One class of these ancient crocodile-like creatures are called the Ladisukeans, massive
00:22marine reptiles that could have grown up to 33 feet long.
00:25For reference, the longest modern crocodiles found today only reach lengths of around 17
00:29feet.
00:30But despite them resembling modern reptiles, and often being referred to as marine crocodiles,
00:34scientists don't actually know where they evolved from, or what came after them.
00:38That's because they believe they first evolved around 200 million years ago, surviving the
00:42end Triassic mass extinction.
00:44And recent fossil discoveries corroborate that timeline, though they don't shed any light
00:48on where the creatures came from.
00:50Based on fossil records alone, the phylum of marine crocodiles seem to have appeared out
00:54of nowhere, hence the ghostly nomenclature.
00:56Meaning despite finding more and more signs of their ubiquity all over the planet, there
01:00remains so far only raise more questions.
01:03And now let's see.
01:04And now let's see.
