00:00As the planet continues to get warmer and climates shift the world over,
00:03farming is going to be an increasingly more difficult challenge.
00:06But these high-tech farmers with Veggie Tech are pioneering sustainable farming for the future
00:11in the deserts of the United Arab Emirates.
00:14This is the Active Hydroponic Vertical Indoor Farm,
00:16being used to produce food in a place where farming has not been historically easy.
00:20They're using a method of infusing the hydroponic water with nutrients for growing higher quality food,
00:25called NFT or the Nutrient Film Technique.
00:28And since they're farming indoors under UV lights,
00:30they can produce crops year-round versus only a one- or two-month cycle outdoors,
00:34with their vertical farm yielding at least twice as much produce daily as conventional flat farming.
00:40But aside from producing more, they're doing it using less.
00:43And that is fully enclosed, that we can recycle the water and the nutrients.
00:48They're now producing more than 60 different fruits and vegetables,
00:51investigating the best methods for doing so using a mixture of desert sand
00:54and their specific combination of fertilizers,
00:56perhaps giving us a glimpse of hope for the future of farming in a world that's changing.
