00:00Today is a very exciting day for Introversion.
00:04Very, very exciting day.
00:07It's been a long time coming.
00:10And today is when we tell the world that the next game from Introversion is a space building game
00:15and it is called The Last Starship.
00:18Woohoo!
00:19The Last Starship!
00:21We need like a jingle or something.
00:23Da-do-do-do-do-do-do!
00:25The Last Starship.
00:27And this is it. We're looking at The Last Starship.
00:30You can play The Last Starship at the moment.
00:32Well, some people are going to be able to play it, but we'll talk more about that in a moment.
00:36But what is it?
00:38It's a spaceship game, mate.
00:40It's a game in which you build spaceships and then fly around the galaxy looking for adventure.
00:46So this is like the first time you play the game starting ship.
00:52So we've got some astronauts and they're in spacesuits because the cabin is depressurised.
00:57and we've got some resources.
00:59This is fuel.
01:01We've got some equipment in boxes.
01:03We've got some oxygen and so on.
01:04And we need to set up our ship and get it up and running.
01:08So you could say that you need to architect your ship.
01:10You could say that you need to be a ship architect.
01:15Should we try and do stuff?
01:17Yes, let's do stuff.
01:18So we've already, because this is like the beginning ship and it's meant to help you along a little bit,
01:22we already have most of the equipment that we need to get the ship up and running.
01:26Right.
01:26So, for example, we have over here a reactor.
01:29Now, a reactor is the thing that powers our ship.
01:32So in order to install it, we can go to construction, install, reactor.
01:37And we can tell our men to place it down.
01:40Our people.
01:41I'm sorry.
01:42We can tell our people to place it down.
01:44Yeah.
01:45So it's not doing anything because it needs fuel.
01:49Okay.
01:49We need to load fuel into our reactor before it can start generating power.
01:52Yeah.
01:52This is the fuel.
01:53So the fuel arrives in a sort of commoditized barrel that our people can carry.
01:57But in order to load it in, we need to use a tank loader.
02:01So if I click on install loader and place that next to it like this,
02:07one of our guys will install a loader.
02:10All right.
02:11This is the device.
02:12So this is designed to take these fuel pods and, you know, pump fuel in.
02:16And then I can connect the two together with a pipe like this.
02:19So I suppose now would be a good time to just kind of make it exceptionally clear
02:24that this game will at some point be released in alpha, but we're not even there.
02:30You know, it's full of placeholder art.
02:34We're not even at early access.
02:36We're so early.
02:36We're so early.
02:37We're not even early access.
02:39Yeah.
02:39I think you...
02:40We're actually going to be in Steam playtest, which is to say that we're going to be letting
02:46people play the game, a very early version of the game with all of its placeholder art
02:50and all of its missing assets and missing functions, quite frankly.
02:54And we're working towards the early access.
02:57But we're not there yet.
02:59Long way to go.
03:01Let's carry on, shall we?
03:02Now that we have a reactor, we can actually install some propulsion engines to our ship.
03:08We've got two.
03:09Now, you'll notice that these engines, you see how there's like a different view.
03:13This is like the construction, like blueprint mode, you know, and then there's like the
03:16real world mode.
03:17Yeah.
03:18So in our construction mode, you can see that we've got two ports on our engine, right?
03:22We've got a red one, which is flashing, which, you know, you can guess what that means.
03:25It means it needs power, right?
03:26Needs power, yeah.
03:28And it also has a yellow port, which is the same as the reactor.
03:31So these engines run off the exact same sci-fi fuel as our reactor.
03:36So if I run a pipe, like so, I can connect fuel into our engines.
03:42Cool.
03:43And then I can connect power into our engines as well.
03:46Yeah, because these engines, they need both.
03:49They need a power and a fuel.
03:50We've spoken about these, haven't we?
03:53There we go.
03:55So our engines are now receiving power and fuel.
03:57They're charging up and then they spring into life.
04:00Should we take it for a spin?
04:02Yeah, let's drive the ship.
04:03So to take it for a spin, I switch into my tactical controls.
04:08Nice.
04:09And here I can control my ship throttle.
04:11This is the first time anyone in the world's seen this stuff, mate.
04:14I've been looking at it for months, but it still looks brilliant.
04:17How long have we been messing with this stuff?
04:21And tactical screen.
04:22What can that mean?
04:23Why would you have a tactical screen?
04:25Tactical screen.
04:26Yeah, there's like different views, isn't there?
04:28I like the idea of there being different views on the same thing.
04:32All right, that's enough of that.
04:34Bring the ship to a halt.
04:36All stop.
04:37Yeah, so we're all in spacesuits, which isn't really very comfortable for anyone.
04:42No, no.
04:42If we're honest.
04:43We would prefer to pressurise this cabin.
04:46We can do that.
04:47We can do that with an air duct.
04:49So we need our life support system in place now.
04:51Let's install our life support system.
04:53So let's place an air duct.
04:55And much the same as our reactor, you'll notice it's got a little blue pipe on the side.
05:00Right.
05:00I wouldn't put fuel in there, mate, because fuel's yellow.
05:03We wouldn't want to pump fuel into the atmosphere.
05:06No, no.
05:07But we probably do want to pump oxygen into the atmosphere.
05:11Yeah, yeah.
05:12So if I connect those two together, our guys will bring over a loader,
05:16and then they will load oxygen into our loader.
05:21Is that going?
05:22Did you plug it in?
05:23I didn't see.
05:24No, I forgot.
05:24No, you haven't.
05:25Yeah, plug it in, mate.
05:26Come on.
05:26Let's plug it in.
05:27There we go.
05:28So that's now running and oxygenating.
05:32So if we bring up a little overlay of our atmosphere,
05:35you'll see that it's kind of unbreathable.
05:38Out of all of the placeholder art, this is the one that I hate the most.
05:41But anyway, I'll just...
05:43There are several screens that I hate in the game currently.
05:46But the idea is that it's filling up, you know?
05:49So those brown bars are kind of suggesting that...
05:52It's like the oxygen level in the cabin, slowly filling.
05:55Yeah, yeah.
05:56Yeah.
05:57Now eventually, they'll just take their...
06:00Once it's at 100%, they'll take their suits off and just leave them lying around.
06:04There we go.
06:05There we are, yeah.
06:06There's our guys out of the seats.
06:09So this is probably a good time for us to ask where we are, isn't it?
06:13Where are we?
06:14We're in space.
06:18We're in a star sector that looks like this, right?
06:21Here's us.
06:22Okay.
06:22Yeah, yeah.
06:23And here's some other star systems around us.
06:25Right.
06:26We're only in the beginning sector, so we can't really do very much here.
06:29So we probably want to travel to one of these other sectors and see if there's anything that we can
06:33do.
06:34Now, in order to do that, we're going to have to install our FTL drive, which is the last thing
06:38in our list.
06:40Yeah.
06:40So let's put that down and cable it up.
06:47There we go.
06:48There's our FTL drive.
06:49And those green pods that you see there are our FTL fuel.
06:53In fact, I can tell them to store our FTL fuel much closer to our FTL drive.
06:57That would make sense, wouldn't it?
06:58Efficiency savings?
07:00Yeah.
07:01So let's go to the sector map and let's plot a course for that shipyard sake.
07:04Sounds interesting, yeah.
07:05This is all random, so I actually don't know what's going to be in each of these star systems.
07:09Oh, excuse me, generated.
07:11Yeah.
07:12So we can go to FTL and say prepare jump, and our ship will align automatically to the correct jump
07:21angle.
07:21And then once we're there, we can click on jump.
07:28Now we're in FTL jump.
07:30So you can see that we're travelling through hyperspace.
07:33Here is us in the sector map, travelling.
07:35Yeah, yeah.
07:36Moving from one system to another.
07:39This is a good time to do any little bit of housekeeping.
07:41You might not have tidying up the ship, that sort of thing.
07:48So we've arrived in a completely new sector.
07:52Yes.
07:53And as you can see, it looks exactly the same because we don't have a single bit of artwork yet.
07:59It's in pre-alpha playtest, folks.
08:01There are some of the little things here, like there's some of the ships here.
08:05If you look in the tactical view, you can see that here's us in our little science vessel.
08:10And there's like a little transport ship over here that's not doing very much.
08:13Yeah, yeah.
08:15The seeds of a future world.
08:17The beginnings.
08:19Yeah.
08:19So there's a trade board where we can buy and sell hardware and resources.
08:25Like we've been using fuel, we've been using oxygen.
08:27We can buy those things.
08:28We can also buy all this equipment.
08:30Fusion reactors, thrusters, cannons, railguns, mining lasers, drone bays, hyperspace sensors.
08:39All this stuff, it all costs money.
08:42It's all in there for a reason, isn't it?
08:44Yeah.
08:44And it's all expensive and we don't have any money.
08:48So we might find a way to...
08:50We've got 10,000 space bucks, mate.
08:52We do, but it's not enough to buy something nice.
08:54We could buy a battery.
08:57It's not actually a bad idea.
08:59Let's buy a battery.
09:02So our power grid currently looks like this.
09:05This is our reactor and it's powering our engines and our FTL and our life support system.
09:10And if I turn our engines on, you can see that the power demand of our engines goes up very
09:15high.
09:16And so our reactor spins up in order to try and meet that demand.
09:20But there's a latency, right?
09:22It takes a while for our reactor to spin up to provide the necessary 100 megawatts that our engines desire.
09:29So instead of that, instead of waiting for that reactor to spin up,
09:35we can store power in a battery.
09:38Because that's very cool.
09:39Because that would enable you to say something like,
09:41Switch power to shields!
09:43Yeah, that's right.
09:44For future gameplay reasons.
09:46That's right.
09:47Exactly.
09:47But you don't...
09:48Your reactor is always...
09:49Your reactor is likely never quite powerful enough, you know?
09:52Yeah.
09:53So our power grid now, our reactor will run at full power and we'll fill up our battery capacity
09:58until it's full.
10:01And so we now have immediate power available, even if the reactor is spilled down.
10:06So if we throttle up now, you'll see that our engines will drag their power out of the batteries
10:12and then the reactor refills the battery at the same time.
10:15Right, right.
10:15Just an interesting aside.
10:17Yeah, yeah.
10:18Let's go to the contract screen.
10:21Well, we need to make some money, don't we?
10:23Yes, we do need to make some money, because I've just spent all of our money on a battery.
10:27Oh, right, okay.
10:30This is the list of missions that are currently available within this star system.
10:35Okay.
10:36So you can see that there are some weird open contracts that don't really make sense,
10:40like a science project.
10:42There's a rescue mission that we're not allowed to do because we don't have necessary hardware.
10:46There's some mining missions.
10:48There are some civilian transport missions that we can't do because we don't have any passenger cabins.
10:55Yeah.
10:56But there are some that we can do.
10:58We can do these ones.
11:00So it says, deliver cargo to a nearby star system.
11:02I've got 12 boxes of supplies.
11:04So they've got a load of cargo that they want to shuttle around.
11:06The destination is within this sector in star system one.
11:09So this is a sector, right?
11:12Yes.
11:12And these are all the star systems.
11:13Star system one is there, right?
11:15Okay.
11:16NC1.
11:17That's where we just were.
11:18That's where we were, wasn't it?
11:20I think we were actually...
11:21Were we?
11:21Yeah, I mean, we're just going to go straight back then.
11:23So we can go and accept that mission.
11:27A shuttle is en route to you now with supplies.
11:30There it is.
11:32That's a little bit of placeholder art from a game that we know and love.
11:38Don't sue us.
11:41Cargo.
11:42There we go.
11:42So I'll give them some more cargo space.
11:44So let's align the ship.
11:48So we're aligning to jump back to us.
11:50You see our sector map now says delivery over the location.
11:56There we go.
11:57So now we're jumping back to where we came from.
12:00With our cargo on board.
12:03Our cargo is what?
12:05We just don't know at this point.
12:07It's only a level one cargo delivery mission.
12:10So I suspect it's just a load of tools or something.
12:13We click on turn in contract.
12:15We're not quite at the point yet where the cargo that we're receiving is illegal or volatile or alive.
12:21Oh, what a good idea.
12:22I wonder if our game would support that kind of stuff in the future.
12:25It doesn't yet.
12:27No, it doesn't.
12:28It definitely doesn't yet.
12:28That's the Alpha 17 plan, isn't it?
12:30Yeah, yeah.
12:31And so you can see as we actually drop these off, we're actually receiving money up here in the top
12:35left.
12:35We're getting paid for our mission.
12:37Our mission item is mission cargo is updating.
12:40And we will receive 12,000 credits for that.
12:45Excellent.
12:46So if you do that.
12:49So that's quite a simple ship.
12:51That's the first 10 minutes of the first player's game, you know?
12:55Right, yeah.
12:56Maybe we should take a look at the game a little further in.
12:59Maybe we should.
13:01All right, so I've loaded a different save game now.
13:03Look, look at that.
13:05This is now my more intermediate ship.
13:10Oh, what was that?
13:10You're taking fire?
13:11So we're in a meteor...
13:13There's a meteor shower occurring in the sector.
13:16We're actually a fleet of two ships.
13:19This is my large logistics ship.
13:22And I'm not going to explain what everything on board does.
13:24But we've seen some of the elements, right?
13:26You see we've got a few more reactors now.
13:28We've got a few more batteries.
13:29You can see we've got a little drone armada that are currently launching out of our side.
13:33And we're currently mining the hell out of this asteroid with our second ship,
13:38which is entirely a powered mining vessel.
13:41Its only real purpose is to have a broadside of mining lasers.
13:46And so we're mining this incredibly rich vein of minerals.
13:53Our other ship is mining the hell out of it with lasers.
13:56And our primary ship is really more of a drone hub.
13:59And you can see our little logistics drones are carrying mined resources back us and forwards.
14:03And our crew, our crew of 42 astronauts, are taking all those marine resources.
14:09At the same time as that, we're also under an ongoing meteor shower.
14:13And so you can see all of our ship's defences are firing up and trying to destroy any meteors
14:20that get too close to us and cause us damage.
14:23It takes a little while to reach this point in the game.
14:27You know, that's the idea.
14:29The idea is that you start small and build up and build your fleet and build your capabilities
14:35and get engaged in all kinds of shenanigans.
14:38And the sector map keeps changing and things keep happening.
14:42And there's weird stuff occurring in the same system.
14:44And it's brutally early in the process.
14:47So nothing is quite finished yet.
14:51But the seeds are there.
14:53So for those that don't know, we made Prison Architect.
14:59And Prison Architect was in early access for, I don't know, four or five years in the end, I think.
15:06And the way it worked is every month we layered in an additional level of complexity.
15:11And that is our plan for this game.
15:13And we are going to go on a journey again, really, with a player base, we hope.
15:20To help us flesh the game out, the world out, the direction out.
15:26Touchstones for us are sort of Battlestar Galactica, the TV series.
15:31You know, that kind of, we want to get that sense of sort of impending doom and the last of
15:38humanity.
15:39But we've also got a Star Trek, almost kind of episodic objective, you know, as you go from star system
15:47to star system.
15:48You can clearly see influences from Frontier and Elite, you know, in the way the world is kind of set
15:56up.
15:57And other touchstones, I suppose, for us, Factorio, you know, we really want to go really deep.
16:02Definitely for the industry side, yeah.
16:04FTL for the, FTL is definitely worth a big mention for the feeling of adventuring through a sector, you know,
16:13visiting different systems within a sector and going on adventures.
16:19And I suppose we've got to cite Prison Architect as well, to a certain extent, right?
16:24You know, in terms of the sort of colony side.
16:27Yeah, yeah.
16:28The human simulation is not going to be quite as strong within this as it was in PA or stuff.
16:33That's not the right word.
16:34The focus is not really going to be on the people.
16:36The focus is going to be on the ships.
16:39But there are crews, there are people.
16:41We do have plans for that as well.
16:43But at the moment, it's all spreadsheets, right?
16:47Other than what you can see.
16:49And the only way we're going to get there.
16:50They're all just plans in our head, aren't they?
16:53That's it, that's it.
16:55Maybe we should explain the playtest process.
16:58Yeah, well, I mean, the big question for us is, is anyone going to want to play this?
17:01You know, that's the question that we're trying to answer.
17:04Well, I hope so.
17:05Yeah, I hope so as well.
17:06But you never know.
17:08It's not a given, no.
17:09And will they want to play it at this stage as well?
17:11I mean, it's, you know, it's got a lot of, it doesn't have a tutorial.
17:15It doesn't have any help at the start of the game.
17:18You know, it's pretty brutal.
17:20So how does it work then?
17:21How does the Steam playtest work?
17:23Right, so you can visit The Last Starship on Steam.
17:26You can search for it.
17:28And we'll put a link in the video.
17:30And you can wishlist the game, which you should do.
17:34Because then you'll receive all of the notifications that we release about the game.
17:37And there's also a button on the Steam page that says, apply to join the playtest.
17:42Okay.
17:42Now, if you click that, you go into our list of playtesters that have applied.
17:46And every now and then, we'll bring in another batch of 100 playtesters or so.
17:50And you'll just immediately get access to play the game.
17:54If you have any feedback, or if you have any problems, you can write about them on the Steam forums
18:00or on Twitter.
18:01Did you just say, if you have any problems?
18:03If, if you run into a bug of some kind, you know, you're free to write about them on tours
18:12through whatever social media channel you like best.
18:16I think it's inevitable.
18:17Send us an Instagram of you miming the bug.
18:21Yeah, Instagram your bugs to us.
18:24We do, we do, we do need your help.
18:26We know, we know there's lots of bugs in there.
18:28But also, we're just interested in the way players play, aren't we?
18:31You know, what they want to do.
18:33Well, there's just, there's just loads that doesn't even exist yet.
18:35You know what I mean?
18:36Yeah.
18:36It's like, yeah, this is very early.
18:38And we've never really, we've never released a game in Steam playtest.
18:41Because I think it's quite a new feature on Steam, actually.
18:44Yeah.
18:44It didn't really exist with Prison Architect.
18:47And early access only existed from Alpha 10 onward.
18:50Yeah.
18:51So, and that was early for us then.
18:53This time around, you know, we're looking, we're looking for, we're really looking for early feedback on which of the
18:58different parts of the games people are most interested in.
19:01What kind of directions they'd like to see us move in.
19:04And it gives us, it gives us a warm feeling to see other people play in the game as well.
19:10So there you have it.
19:11Last Starship.
19:12Seventh major game from Introversion Software.
19:15You can apply to join the playtest on Steam at the moment.
19:18Or like and subscribe the video to help us get the word out.
19:21And add it to your Steam wish list.
19:23We will be back and show you more soon.
19:25We will be back and show you more soon.
