00:01In Days Gone, your bike isn't just a bike, it's your best friend, and in this post-apocalyptic world, you're
00:06going to need all the friends you can get.
00:08Today I sat down with Emmanuel Roth, senior animator at Ben's studio, to talk about what it's like hooning about
00:14this open world.
00:16And looking cool doing it. Me, me.
00:25We wanted to make a very brutal world. You have to pay attention to every decision you're making when you
00:32approach a zone or a mission, you have to analyze what is your environment, what is the time of the
00:39day, and you have to make some decision how to approach it.
00:42Do you want to go with your gun? Do you want to go stealth? You decide, it's up to you.
00:46Tell us about the challenges in doing the art for this game, because you're a senior animator.
00:52I can tell you that the environment was a big deal for us. We wanted to show this detailed world
00:57with luxurious environment, vegetation everywhere, all that is idyllic. But at the same time, it's very dangerous.
01:05You know, often in open world games, you feel like the predator, you know, like I'm in control of everything,
01:09you can run and gun. But in this one, I really don't feel like I'm at the apex of the
01:14food chain here.
01:14Definitely not. You feel underpowered, you feel in danger, and that's what we want you to feel.
01:23Let's talk about the motorbike. It's such a huge part of moving through this world. Why did you guys choose
01:28a motorbike?
01:28It was the best tool for Deacon to traverse the broken road. He was a biker. He's a biker outlaw.
01:35He loves his motorcycle. And we want the player to love it too.
01:38So you will level it up. You will make a gas tank bigger. And when you make that gas tank
01:44bigger, you travel further, you can make a bigger engine, you can change the color, put sticker on it, make
01:49it your own bike.
01:51We want the player to feel an attachment to that bike.
01:54Did you ever consider putting scooters in the game?
01:56You will not survive very long with a scooter. Those small wheels, weird balance, not clearance on the ground.
02:03Okay, I didn't think of that. Yes. Yeah. I found it quite easy traversing with the bike, actually, which I'm
02:09surprised at because there's, you know, there's trees and broken cars and enemies and walls coming at me at all
02:13sides.
02:14How hard was it to get the bike to work as a vehicle, to move you around this world, but
02:19not have you crashing constantly?
02:20We did adapt the terrain to the bike. We did the opposite to change the way the bike handled to
02:27go with that terrain.
02:28We want you to be able to do big jumps and do some big stunts. But at the same time,
02:33it has to be very manageable.
02:35No helmet on, though. No safety. No safety.
02:38Not the post-apocalypse. Don't have to worry about that. That's a detail.
02:40There's other things to worry about there. Plus, he's such a good rider.
02:43Yes, he doesn't fall over when you meet a tree.
02:46Yeah, I made him fall over a lot.
