00:02ARCANE LIONE
00:02ENTRE UNIANO
00:08DE E IN LIEO
00:09WELCOME TO OUR DETHLOOP QUAKECON PANEL
00:11I'M ANNE LEWIS
00:12AND I AM JOINED TODAY BY DINGA PICHABA
00:14ALL THE WAY OVER FROM ARCANE LIONE
00:16THANKS FOR JOINING US DINGA
00:18HI EVERYONE
00:19IT'S MY PLEASURE TO BE HERE
00:21IF YOU'VE BEEN FOLLOWING DEATHLOOP
00:22YOU'VE SEEN THE STORY FROM COULT'S PERSPECTIVE
00:24ONE MAN TRAPPED IN A TIME LOOP
00:26WITH EIGHT PEOPLE TO KILL
00:27IN ORDER TO BREAK IT
00:39e step into her shoes asi invaditi Colt's story
02:22Se tu fai giocato Giuliana,
02:25poi è tornato a lui e può invadere qualcuno.
02:27e questo è interessante,
02:29perché sicuramente il colt è potuto
02:31prendere un po' più rischio,
02:33che generale incontra gli giocatori di Giuliana
02:36a essere un po' più attenzione,
02:40un po' più devianti,
02:42e usare cose come trappi,
02:44deception, misdirezione,
02:46moltissime cose.
02:47Ma a parte di questo,
02:49si possono avere accesso
02:50alle stelle stelle,
02:51le stelle stelle,
03:00quindi giocatori come Giuliana
03:02ci permette di avere un po' più attenzione
03:05di un po' più attenzione di Blackreef.
03:06È un po' più attenzione di Blackreef,
03:08colt non è,
03:09quindi bisogna essere un po' più
03:12knowledgeable,
03:12aware della sua situazione.
03:14Soprattutto in l'inizio,
03:16non sappiamo molto di lei,
03:17ma è chiaro che sa chiama
03:19la sua Blackreef.
03:21Sì, sa chiama l'isola all'interno.
03:23È un po' più attenzione
03:24che risponde la sua compagnia.
03:26Soprattutto che un NPC
03:27dovrebbe essere patrullo in questa strada,
03:30ma non sono patrullo,
03:31quindi probabilmente il corte ha eliminato loro.
03:34Soprattutto dove le braci sono,
03:36dove le hotspots sono,
03:38saprattutto dove le sottoline sono,
03:40se sei in una situazione di sniper.
03:44Sì, è davvero un po' più attenzione.
03:46Quando sei giocatori come Giuliana,
03:47sei chiaramente giocatori di giocatori.
03:49Sei giocatori che è un po' più attenzione,
03:50che hanno trovato un po' più attenzione.
03:54e non vogliono perdere.
03:55Quindi,
04:52i visionari, i targeti.
06:44di giocare come Giuliana.
06:58arcane watercooler momenti.
07:12aggiungi a questi momenti?
07:14Perché adesso hai due elementi imprenditori?
07:16Ciò che abbiamo aggiungito a questo game
07:18non era un aspecto competitivo,
07:21perché non c'è nessuno di leaderboard,
07:23c'è nessuno di questo.
07:25C'è veramente il fatto che
07:28è un generatore di anecdote.
07:30due elementi di Chaos in un mondo similato
07:33che creano sicuramente
07:35alcuni momenti interessanti.
07:37E questi momenti di pensare
07:39che non ho pensato per andare così,
07:42ma è stato molto bello,
07:44e che si avviciniamo sui PS5,
07:47e scrivere quel clip,
07:49e poi scrivere per gli altri giocatori
07:50in caso di non lo salvare,
07:52e magari aggiungi loro come amici.
07:55È bello di essere sorpreso
07:56di un gioco,
07:57ciò che gli giocatori possono aggiungere
08:00al mix,
08:03essere in qualcosa molto random,
08:05molto chaotico,
08:06o al contrario,
08:07qualcosa che è un plan perfettamente
08:09gestionato,
08:10in cui pensi,
08:11che l'altra persona è un mastermind,
08:13questo è un bel gioco,
08:15che è un gioco,
08:16che è un gioco,
08:17che è un gioco,
08:18che è un gioco,
08:22che è un gioco,
08:24che è un'opportunità
08:26per noi
08:28interagire con i giocatori
08:30e la comunità in una forma diversa.
08:31La forma che interagiamo con i giocatori
08:34è assicrono,
08:35che si tratta di un gioco,
08:37che si tratta di un gioco,
08:38e poi si tratta di un gioco,
08:41e poi ci tratta di un gioco
08:43sui attrazione
08:43sui attrazione
08:43e non funziona
08:44ma ora che abbiamo avuto
08:45la possibilità di invidere
08:46o di un gioco
08:47di un gioco
08:48possiamo comprare
08:49questi momenti
08:50con voi
08:51e questo è anche
08:54molto divertente per noi
08:55Io per la città
08:57per la città
08:57quindi se si tratta di un gioco
08:59se tratta di un gioco
09:00di un gioco
09:01se tratta di un gioco
09:04Il gioco
09:05è stato un gioco
09:09con il gioco
09:10di un gioco
09:11è stato un gioco
09:13con il gioco
09:13di colt
09:13e Giuliana
09:14il gioco
09:15e il gioco
09:17è molto
09:17complessa
09:19una tratta di
09:20teese
09:21e
09:21mochare
09:22e
09:22jokes
09:23ma
09:23sono
09:23anche
09:24più
09:25momenti
09:26tra i gioco
09:27il gioco
09:28di un gioco
09:30è così complicato, senza spoiler, ovviamente.
09:34Yeah, I guess it's always complicato
09:36quando qualcuno's trying to murder you.
09:39From a player's perspective,
09:41this is the first person you meet
09:43and they're already trying to kill you.
09:45And basically, part of the initial stages of the game
09:49are finding out and exploring
09:51and discovering why she wants to do this.
09:54She has something in common with Colt.
09:56The island loops over one day,
09:58but everybody on the island seems to forget,
10:01except for her and Colt.
10:03So in some ways, they're the only people
10:05who can share an experience of what's going on
10:09on the island with each other
10:10because if they went to somebody else,
10:12they would just forget, right?
10:13Through that experience,
10:15it's basically her trying to get Colt up to her level, right?
10:21She holds all the cards.
10:22She holds all the knowledge.
10:24And so she calls you over the radio
10:27and taunts you and things like this,
10:30but it also is this sort of didactic experience
10:33where Colt is inquiring about what's going on
10:37and she's giving him answers,
10:39but also not giving him all the answers.
10:41As the player navigates through this world,
10:42they discover things
10:44and she can kind of fill in some of the gaps.
10:48Juliana is still a little bit of a mystery to players,
10:52especially when you compare her to Colt
10:54and even the other visionaries.
10:56The other visionaries are very clear in their motivations.
10:59They want to be young forever.
11:01They want to party forever.
11:03We still don't really know very much
11:05about Juliana's motivations.
11:06We don't know why she wants to live forever.
11:10Can you give us any insights?
11:12Again, no spoilers.
11:15I think if one said Juliana's goal would be immortality,
11:19I think Juliana would say that's too simple of a concept.
11:24It's beyond that.
11:26I think in many ways,
11:28the way we've sort of crafted this character is
11:31she's most interested in Colt getting to her level,
11:37challenging her,
11:38which in effect is like
11:40it's a nice narrative
11:41and sort of like
11:43some of the game elements crossover of the PvP thing
11:46because as Dingo was saying,
11:48it's like the most dangerous game,
11:50the most interesting opponent
11:52is a human opponent.
11:54You know what I mean?
11:54And that elevates,
11:56she feels like that elevates her game.
11:58One way to look at it would be that
11:59Colt wakes up on this island.
12:02This woman is clearly the reason
12:04why everyone on the island wants to kill him.
12:06she's with him every step of the way
12:09and she's the most interesting thing.
12:11Not only the most interesting person,
12:13she's the most interesting thing on this entire island
12:15and it seems like
12:17the opposite is also true.
12:20So it's really interesting
12:21and never boring to see those two,
12:23you know, those two interact.
12:25Deathloop is really funny.
12:28I think that it's pretty fair to say
12:31that the humor is a lot more prevalent in this game
12:34than it has been in past arcane games.
12:37Was this always the decision
12:39or is this something that kind of evolved along the way
12:42to make Deathloop,
12:44you know, play with it a little bit more,
12:45have that fun and bring comedy into it?
12:48You know, when we started adding this dimension
12:50of the eternal party to the world,
12:54we knew we wanted it to be fun
12:56and maybe have a little bit of humor
12:58but definitely, you know,
13:01the narrative team like Bennett and Pavel,
13:04Alex, Rosa,
13:05and everyone who worked on the game
13:08definitely brought even more humor
13:10than we were expected
13:13and, yeah, we went for it.
13:15If you just lay out
13:16the world of Deathloop on paper,
13:18you're like,
13:18yeah, this could be a pretty dystopian, dark place,
13:21you know, there's just a lot of bad things
13:24that can go on,
13:25like any sort of, you know,
13:27quasi-attempt to be utopian society
13:29always has usually a very dark side to it.
13:32I think that was very clear
13:34in sort of a lot of the themes
13:36and a lot of the initial characterizations
13:39and I think one of the things we wanted to do
13:42was really put a spin on it
13:43and make it not just like,
13:46not just the world's super cool
13:48but also I really genuinely enjoy
13:50being this main character
13:52and finding out what he says.
13:54When a player picks up a game,
13:56they're like,
13:56they're not worried about the stakes
13:58being against them.
13:59They're just,
13:59they're thinking about how do I win
14:01and that's sort of what Colt acts like.
14:03He shows up and has absolutely no tools,
14:06nothing.
14:07He's like,
14:08he's literally waking up on a beach
14:09and has no idea of what's going on
14:11and he pretty much just blazes right through it
14:14and that's pretty much
14:15what the player would experience as well.
14:16So we really tried to like,
14:18make the player and Colt kind of feel
14:21like they're having a fun time together
14:22as they sort of discover
14:24what the hell is going on in this world
14:26and that stuff.
14:28Colt, for instance,
14:29the way he approaches it
14:30is that he's like,
14:31this is not a great situation to be in.
14:34It's a pretty shitty day
14:35that he has to over and over again,
14:37like everyone wants to kill him.
14:39It's cold.
14:40This is like an impossible task.
14:42Overall, the way he's dealing with it,
14:44like one of the things
14:45that gets him through
14:47is actually this self-deprecating kind of humor.
14:51Like he's not afraid to fail at all.
14:55Like he has this kind of confidence
14:56about the jokes that he makes,
14:58the situations that he gets into.
15:02And I think it's an interesting way
15:05for players to get into that kind of mindset.
15:08that, as Bennett said,
15:10like enjoying the experience,
15:12enjoying the successes,
15:13enjoying the failures as well,
15:15enjoying each discovery
15:17because, you know, he's driven,
15:20he's serious about what he's doing,
15:22but he's not taking himself too seriously.
15:25Like this is one of the ways he deals with it.
15:28Well, we have a lot more to say
15:30about Deathloop's story.
15:31In fact, you can join us tomorrow
15:34as we sit down with the voice actors
15:35behind Colt and Juliana
15:37to talk even more about
15:39their complicated relationship
15:41and get a little bit more insight
15:43into these characters.
15:44For now, we're going to say goodbye to Denga.
15:47Bye-bye, au revoir, thanks for having me.
15:49And last but certainly not least,
15:51we are joined by Dana Nightingale,
15:54our campaign designer
15:55and the architect of Deathloop's murder puzzle,
15:58which is a term that we've brought up a lot
16:00when talking about Deathloop.
16:02But Dana, please tell us,
16:03what is the murder puzzle?
16:04The murder puzzle is the player's journey
16:08through this very strange situation
16:10they find themselves in
16:12between waking up on a beach
16:14with no idea what's going on
16:15and eventually being able to eliminate
16:18all eight visionaries in one day
16:20and figuring out how to actually do that.
16:24So it's a process of searching for clues.
16:28It's about going to each of those visionaries'
16:33strongholds, the locations where they're spending their eternity,
16:39they're partying or researching
16:40or just, you know, hanging out with their friends
16:43and infiltrating their space,
16:47learning about them
16:48and figuring out what are the ways
16:51that I can either move them around
16:53or find out if there's any secrets to their schedule
16:56that you can exploit
16:57so that they'll all eventually line up
17:01and you can do that perfect run.
17:03The way the player experiences this in the gameplay is
17:08every time you start a new loop,
17:10the whole island is laid out in front of you.
17:13You've got these four locations
17:15and you're picking where you want to go.
17:18So it's the morning, it's a fresh day
17:21and you're starting to craft your campaign.
17:26So you decided that you're the most interested
17:29in this particular visionary.
17:31Say it might be Igor Serling.
17:34You're really interested in what this guy is up to
17:36so you can sneak into his camp,
17:40discover what he's up to
17:41and hopefully find something there
17:45that will give you a clue that you need
17:47to figure out how to get him to another spot
17:50because he's out in the middle of nowhere.
17:52It's going to be really tough
17:53to get another visionary to him.
17:55But maybe you could figure out a way
17:57to move him to a different location.
17:59This was something that came along
18:00very early in the process
18:01and we kind of knew that
18:05this is how we wanted to solve the murder puzzle.
18:07And so I think one of the challenges
18:09narratively was coming up with
18:11interesting characters
18:12that have these needs, wants, and desires
18:15and then making it make sense
18:18that they would maybe go against
18:20their own self-interest
18:21or act in a non-selfish way sometimes
18:24in order to quote-unquote
18:27move yourself around
18:29so the player has a chance to actually kill them.
18:32A big difference between this game
18:33and the previous games
18:35that we've worked on
18:37and to an extent Prey included
18:39is that once the game opens up to you
18:43you're choosing the order
18:45that you want to tackle everything.
18:48And you're even choosing
18:49if you want to tackle anything at all.
18:51The campaign will begin with a couple of clues
18:56and as you explore them
18:58you'll find more clues
18:59but in reality you could ignore those clues
19:02and just strike it on your own.
19:04You say actually I want to go to this location
19:06even though I know nothing about it
19:08I don't think anything's there
19:10and you don't know what you're going to discover.
19:14And even though we call them the leads
19:16the clues that you discover
19:21to track down the solutions
19:24even though they will have
19:25like a linear order
19:26that they can fall into
19:28your first clue might be
19:29from the middle of that track
19:31and you can explore in other directions from there.
19:34So what was really important to me
19:37when figuring all this out
19:38was that it was a true player-authored campaign
19:40so that when you're talking with
19:43your friends or other fans
19:45everyone is going to have
19:46a completely different story
19:47about how they tackled the game
19:49who they started with
19:50what they discovered when
19:51you might have figured it out
19:53without the game helping you at all
19:55you just your intuition
19:56put it together
19:57and you're able to zoom
19:58straight in on the solution.
20:00In the long form gameplay
20:02that we showed off in July
20:03there were a lot of instances
20:05of Colt finding these small details
20:09that gave him either more information
20:11about his targets
20:11or information about ways to break
20:14into Alexis's mansion
20:16so all of these little things
20:17that come together
20:18how important are these little details
20:21that you find on the island of Black Reef
20:23to solving this puzzle?
20:25Some of them are integral
20:26like you need this clue
20:29in order to progress
20:31to a certain location
20:33it might be giving you
20:35a key combination to a locked door
20:37so you really have to figure out
20:39where this piece of information is
20:41and track it down
20:42but there's a lot more stories
20:44on Black Reef
20:44than just the story of Colt
20:46and the visionaries
20:47and Juliana
20:48and the rivalry
20:49and the time loop even
20:51so you may stumble across something
20:53that has something to do
20:54with a personal story
20:56from one of the other people
20:58living on the island
20:59or something that happened
21:00before the time loop
21:01and that could lead you
21:03to a vignette
21:05or a piece of content
21:06or a puzzle
21:07that is its own puzzle
21:11and story unto itself
21:12so if you've played
21:15any of our other games
21:16you know that we love
21:18to pack our maps
21:19full of things to discover
21:22and other stories
21:23and all the little signs of life
21:26that make the world feel bigger
21:28than just your own experience
21:29and this is no exception
21:31in fact
21:31I think we might have packed
21:33more into this game
21:34than any of the others
21:36In Deathloop
21:37you're not really beholden
21:38to following the murder puzzle
21:41every step of the way
21:42you can step off of the path
21:44you can do a little bit
21:45of exploring outside of that
21:46what is there to do
21:48outside of the murder puzzle
21:49what are you seeing
21:51what are you experiencing
21:52when you're not
21:52actively playing detective
21:54and trying to find
21:55that golden path
21:56The bizarre hijinks
21:59of the eternalists
22:01they get up to
22:02some pretty interesting
22:05little adventures
22:06now that they're in the loop
22:08a lot of them are just
22:09left to their own devices
22:11and they come up with
22:12all of these
22:14sometimes quite extreme
22:17ideas for how they're
22:18going to have their fun
22:19and there's characters
22:21with schedules
22:21beyond just the visionaries
22:23you could learn
22:23that this particular group
22:25of people
22:26are going to be
22:27in this other map later
22:28in this other location
22:29but something bad happens
22:31because of their idea
22:33of fun just happens
22:34to go terribly wrong
22:35and half of them die
22:36well maybe you can tweak that
22:38and then when you go
22:39to one of our other maps
22:40later in the day
22:40now they're there
22:42now they're continued
22:43on their strange adventure
22:44and they're partying
22:45in a different way
22:46but now this new location
22:48is unlocked
22:49practically speaking
22:50to the player's progression
22:52that might mean
22:53new trinkets
22:54new weapons
22:55but for me
22:57it means more of the story
22:58a new location
22:59to explore
23:00getting a better sense
23:01of what this world
23:02is about
23:03and this is something
23:04that we just
23:05fill the game world with
23:07yeah the eternalists
23:09like to mess around
23:09with things that go boom
23:10so you know
23:11there's all kinds of
23:14dangerous things
23:15you can get yourself
23:15involved with
23:16so
23:17speaking of dangerous
23:18things you can get
23:19yourself involved with
23:20from either a
23:22development standpoint
23:23or a player standpoint
23:25do you have a favorite
23:27visionary to assassinate
23:29from a pure player
23:31perspective
23:31I'm very happy
23:33with what we came up
23:34with for Frank
23:35and the reason why
23:36I feel like
23:37as a player
23:38that's the most satisfying
23:39is I think
23:39out of all of them
23:40that's the one
23:41that you can
23:44you can complete
23:45just based on
23:46your own intuition
23:47the player
23:48looking at what
23:50the game
23:50is showing them
23:51and rather than
23:54following the clues
23:55you can make an
23:56intuitive leap
23:57and rush to the end
23:58and solve it
23:59very quickly
24:00if you're paying
24:00attention
24:01if you know
24:01what's going on
24:02and I'm really happy
24:03that we were able
24:04to construct the campaign
24:06in a way that
24:07rewards that
24:08you don't have to
24:08go through
24:09all 16 steps
24:11you can jump
24:12straight to the end
24:13if you notice things
24:15and I hope that
24:17when players do that
24:19they'll feel the same
24:20satisfaction
24:21that I had
24:22when we were able
24:23to get that working
24:24I actually really like
24:26Frank
24:27I think he's a character
24:28he's
24:29he was a fun character
24:30for us to write
24:32the actor who performed him
24:34Andrew Caldwell
24:34was great
24:36and he's just
24:38he's kind of a different
24:39like all the characters
24:40are different
24:41in their own right
24:41but for some reason
24:42I think Frank is sort of
24:43he's kind of the most fun
24:44to hang out with
24:45aside from Colt
24:46I think
24:47and also I just love
24:48his
24:49he's got this
24:50club basically
24:51where you can go
24:52and find him at
24:53and it's just a fun map
24:54to play
24:55so I really like
24:57Frank's mission
24:57well you guys
24:58will be able to
24:59experience Frank's mission
25:00and all of the other
25:01Visionaries missions
25:02when Deathloop launches
25:04on PlayStation 5
25:05and PC
25:06on September 14th
