00:17Thank you very much.
00:32Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio. Here we go again.
00:36Will it be a white Christmas? People are now speculating because apparently Christmas really has got to be a coating
00:42of snow.
00:42Will it be a white Christmas? Who knows?
00:45But I'll tell you where it will be a white Christmas, in the Alps or perhaps in Lapland.
00:49And Lapland now is a destination for parents, I guess, Rachel, with children too, because the children love a white
00:57Christmas.
01:00And for me, what do you reckon?
01:02Well, Father Christmas always used to come to visit us in South End, so we didn't need to go to
01:05Lapland when I was younger.
01:06Exactly.
01:07Yeah, but now I have to say the last few years I've skipped off and it is quite nice.
01:11And this year I'm going to skip off to Canada. So it's possibly going to be minus 20.
01:16You'll get some snow. Have a lovely time in Canada. We'll talk before you go. Of course you will.
01:21And Chris Weldon, welcome back. Chris is here. Rachel, three wins for Chris, retired civil servant from Great Birchham in
01:29Norfolk.
01:30And you're joined by Stephen Charleston, IT service desk team leader from Denny.
01:35Tell us about this amateur wrestling.
01:37Just train a couple of times a week. We'll have a show sometimes once a week, maybe even twice a
01:42weekend.
01:43And you sort of dress up in funny costumes. All that carry on.
01:47A singlet. It's really unflattering. It's, yeah, it's great.
01:52Do you get people coming in to cheer you on?
01:55For me, I'm a bad guy, so I get people coming in to give me abuse.
01:58But, yeah, we get good crowds. Sometimes a couple hundred people, depending on the venue.
02:03I mean, it's very skilful not to get hurt, isn't it?
02:06Yeah, basically.
02:07You've got to fall correctly and all the rest of it.
02:08That's the hard part, it's learning the falls and making sure you're keeping each other safe. That's the main part.
02:14I wouldn't want you falling on me, actually.
02:16Let's have a big round of applause for Stephen and Chris Weldon.
02:23And over in the corner, Susie, of course, joined once again by the wonderful Paul Zenon.
02:27Zenon, magician, but also comedian.
02:33And, in fact, I hope I won't make you blush, but you were awarded the Ken Dodd Award for comedy
02:39earlier this year.
02:41Well done.
02:41I was, yes, by the man himself.
02:43That's a great recognition of your talents.
02:46But maybe we'll catch up and extend that conversation in a few minutes' time, during the show, anyway.
02:52All right. Let's get down to business.
02:54Chris Weldon, letters game.

04:20Pretty good.
04:21Can we match that, I wonder?
04:23Paul and Susie?
04:24Yeah, I think we can.
04:25Another variant on that.
04:26It's Puritan.
04:28Another seven.

05:55And palmed.
05:57Yes, very good.
05:58I was hoping you'll leave that one to me as a magician.
06:00It's quite.
06:02And Paul, Susie.
06:03Just one of the six we got there, which was a lamped,
06:06but nothing above that, really.
06:07Six was the best we could do.
06:09Lamped.
06:10Is that when you hit somebody?
06:11To hit or beat them.
06:13Oh.
06:14Yeah.
06:14Nothing to do with giving them the black eye.
06:17Oh, I see.
06:17I thought it was, you know, lamps.
06:19You had two headlights.
06:20Oh, no.

06:41and the large, one, twenty-five.
06:44And the target, three hundred and thirty.
06:46Three, three, zero.

07:42So, 23 to 16 is where we stand.
07:44And Chris in the lead as we turn to our first Tea Time teaser.
07:47Which is very clean.
07:49And the clue.
07:50Keeping things very clean is appropriate in the food industry.
07:53Keeping things very clean is appropriate in the food industry.
08:13Welcome back.
08:14I left you with the clue.
08:15So, keeping things very clean is appropriate in the food industry.
08:19And the answer to that one is relevancy.
08:23Relevancy.
08:24So, 23 please.

09:46And a six. Your brain freeze?
09:48It's newt.
09:50Newt? Yep. Thank you, Chris.
09:52Weapon. And weapon.
09:54Yes.
09:56What can you add?
09:58Paul and Susie? Not a lot, really.
10:00It's quite a tough one, that.
10:01We've just got another six with potage.
10:04Yep.
10:05That was it, really? That was our best.
10:06That was it. Newt, weapon and potage.
10:1029, please. 16.
10:11Chris, your letters game.
10:14Consonant, please, Rachel.
10:16Thank you, Chris. R.

11:11And a vowel, please.
11:22Well, Chris?
11:23Six.
11:24Stephen?
11:25Six.
11:26Marine.
11:27Marine.
11:28Stephen?
11:29Marine also.
11:30Yep.
11:31Two sailors.
11:32Paul?
11:33Yeah, we've got quite a nice eight there, I think.
11:36I just jumped out the blue, which is Airwomen.
11:40Really?
11:42Airwomen.
11:46Members of the RAF, female members.
11:48Yes, simply female pilots.
11:50Airwomen.
11:51Yeah, or part of the crew of an aircraft.
11:53Very good.
11:53Anything else, Susie?
11:54Monia would give you a seven.
11:56So, 35 to 22, and the numbers have come round again.
12:00Stephen, off you go.
12:03Can I have one from the top and any other five, please, Rachel?
12:05You can, indeed.
12:07Another one large five, a little selection.
12:09Thank you, Stephen.
12:09And for this round, they are nine, four, two, ten, one, and 100.
12:17And the target, 180.

12:55Stephen?
12:56180.
12:57Yes.
12:58Chris?
12:59180.
13:00Stephen?
13:019 minus 1 is 8.
13:02Yep.
13:03Times a 10 is 80.
13:04And add 100.
13:05Yep, don't need me for this one.
13:06And Chris, there we go.
13:08All right.
13:13Not too much applause for that one, please.
13:1545 plays 32.
13:16Chris on 45.
13:17Paul Zanon.
13:19Now, what panto-themed trick have you got for us today, I wonder?
13:23It's going to be you, Nick.
13:24I'm going to come over to you.
13:25Oh, dear.
13:28This is nerve-wracking.
13:30Absolutely.
13:30Now, the panto I'm in at the moment is Aladdin in Preston, which is the...
13:34I'm playing the bearded baddie, a bit like Stephen does with his wrestling.
13:39And Aladdin's the story of a quest for a magic lamp.
13:41And so, in some ways, very similar to this show, which is a quest for the magic countdown teapot.
13:46So, I'll tell you what, can you just pass me the countdown teapot over?
13:49I'll be happy.
13:50And what we're going to do, we're going to show you something with some cards.
13:55Just a regular deck of 73 playing cards.
13:57Yes.
13:58What I'm going to do in a moment, I'm going to get you to choose one, but the important thing
14:00is it's a free choice.
14:01So, just grab one of those any time you like, preferably today.
14:05That's right.
14:06Oh, be as awkward as you like.
14:08That's good.
14:10It'll make no difference.
14:12It won't make any difference, actually, because it doesn't really matter what it is.
14:14So, just show the camera the card there, so we know what we've got.
14:17Okay.
14:18Yeah.
14:18And obviously, I have no idea what that card is, until I look at it.
14:23King of hearts.
14:24What's going to happen here, this is going to represent Aladdin in the story of Aladdin.
14:29In the old days, a medieval torture would have been something imaginative, you know, hang-drawing, quartering.
14:35Yes.
14:35So, we're going to skip that.
14:37We haven't got time.
14:37So, we'll just do the quartering here of the king.
14:40And we'll turn it into four parts.
14:42Now, the interesting thing here is I'm going to enlist the help of the genie.
14:47Okay.
14:47So, just have one of those four bits as a receipt.
14:49We'll just put that there for a moment.
14:51Yes.
14:51And what's going to happen here is we'll shove the rest inside the teapot where the genie resides.
14:58So, just drop those bits in there.
15:00Right.
15:00Now, interestingly enough, the way to weight the genie up with a lamp is usually to rub it.
15:05Okay?
15:05Yes.
15:05Once again, we haven't got time for that.
15:07The rubbing provides friction.
15:09The friction heats it up.
15:10Yes.
15:11You're saying yes like this is an everyday occurrence in your house.
15:13I'm understanding.
15:15Okay.
15:16We're going to heat him up a slightly different way.
15:18Just to speed things up.
15:19Now, you're probably able to see when the genie starts work.
15:21What he's going to do is try and put Aladdin back together.
15:24Restore him to life.
15:26So, here we go.
15:26Watch this very carefully.
15:28Look.
15:29Oh!
15:31I think he's done the job.
15:32He's done it.
15:33So, Nick, I'm going to take the lid out and just tell me what you can see inside the teapot.
15:39Well, I can see a teabag.
15:41What do you expect?
15:42It's a teapot.
15:44So, that is an unusual thing as well.
15:47Have a look inside there.
15:48It is, in fact, a teabag, but it's a teabag that's sealed up.
15:52Now, what I didn't mention before, one of the characters in Aladdin is Widow Twanky.
15:55Well, it's not Twanky.
15:56It's something else beginning with TW that we won't plug on television.
15:59Right.
15:59But have a look inside there, using the power of Widow Twanky and the genie and Aladdin all combined.
16:06What we have is a teabag.
16:08No.
16:09Yes.
16:10And have a look at that.
16:11Can you see inside there?
16:12There's something a little bit visible.
16:13Let me just kind of open that up.
16:15You see, and inside the middle of that teabag...
16:19Yes.
16:20...is a card.
16:22It's the King of Hearts.
16:23It's restored to three pieces.
16:25You've got the receipt there, the other quarter.
16:27You're amazing.
16:28And if that matches, and only if it matches exactly, can you let the audience know by a look of
16:32blank indifference.
16:35Amazing.
16:37Oh, well done.
16:39Fantastic.
16:42And congratulations.
16:44Thank you very much.
16:45Paul, get back to your seat.
16:46That was extraordinary.
16:48You made a mess here.
16:51That was extraordinary.
16:56A big round of applause for Paul.
16:57Come on.
17:03Quite amazing.
17:05Mess he's made here.
17:06Right.
17:0745 plays.
17:0832.
17:08Chris on 45.
17:10Chris, letters game.
17:10Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:13Thank you, Chris.
17:14N.
17:15And another one.
17:18S.
17:19And a vowel.
17:20I.
17:21And a consonant.

18:23A seven.
18:24Stephen?
18:24A six.
18:25And your six?
18:27Stings.
18:29No, Chris.
18:30In jests.
18:31To ingest?
18:32Yeah.
18:33In jests.
18:34Very good.
18:35Paul, Susie?
18:36Yeah, we couldn't do any better than that, I don't think.
18:38No, we had that one in our sixes.
18:41Six with gusset and perhaps related tissue, I think, because that was it.
18:46Thank you very much, gusset and tissue.
18:4852 plays 32, 20 points in it.
18:51Stephen, your letters go.
18:53Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?

21:42Mmm.
21:43But, 487 now.
21:45Um, yes.
21:47If you say 75 plus 4 plus 2 is 81, times it by 6 for 486, and add on the
21:561, 4, 8, 7.
21:57Oh, fabulous.
21:59Well done, Rachel.
22:01As ever.

22:10And the clue.
22:11A solarium was closed down when it was found to be this.
22:15A solarium was closed down when it was found to be this.
22:34Welcome back.
22:35I left you with the clue.
22:36A solarium was closed down when it was found to be this.
22:39It was found to be, heavens above, malarious.
22:43Malarious.
22:44Or also malarial, Susie?
22:46Yes.
22:47I think there's a very fine distinction between the two.
22:49So, we talk about malarial fevers, um, but you would talk about malarious areas or regions.
22:55Oh, OK.
22:55Big killer, of course.
22:56Yeah, that's right.
22:57Big killer.

25:47To be continued...
25:48Yes, Chris.
25:49Seven.
25:50A seven.
25:52And seven.
25:53Just a six.
25:54You're six.
25:55Yes, fasted.
25:57Yes, Chris.
25:58I think fatties.
26:00Fatties, yes.
26:01In the dictionary.
26:03Mmm.
26:04Yes, we've got both fatties and fitties.
26:08I don't know which one of those two is the daftest.
26:11So daftest for seven as well there.
26:13Well done.
26:14Susie and the girls?
26:15I don't think fitties are in, unfortunately.
26:17But fatties definitely are.
26:19No, we daftest, yeah, that was our best for seven.
26:22So 75 to 43 as we relax to absorb what Susie has to tell us in her wonderful origins of
26:29words.
26:30I'm going to talk about acronyms today.
26:32It comes from the Greek akron meaning summit because you take the tip of each letter for an acronym and
26:37make a word out of it.
26:38It's related to Acropolis, which was a city built on a hill.
26:43Acne, Acrobat, Acrobat as well, performing high up.
26:47And there is such a thing as a backronym because acronyms essentially are taking the first letter of a number
26:52of words, as they say, and making up a plausible word out of them.
26:56Acronyms are when people take a word and think, oh, that must be an acronym, and they make up a
27:01story to fit that particular word.
27:03But many, many stories suggesting that tip is an acronym for to ensure promptness.
27:09And the idea is that in 18th century London coffee houses, when these coffee houses were all the rage, customers
27:15would drop coins into a box when they came in.
27:18And the box would be labelled to ensure promptness.
27:21Lovely story, but sadly no evidence at all exists for that.
27:25In fact, it all began with the criminal underworld, like so many words in English, in the 17th century.
27:30So rogues can't, as we called it.
27:32And tipping someone the wink, which we still use today.
27:35It means to give somebody heads up.
27:37That tip is probably the root of giving a piece of advice, giving a tip to somebody.
27:41And tip, Ben, simply meant to allow or to give.
27:46And that sense of giving then translated over to tipping someone a shilling, giving someone a shilling as a result
27:52of good service, or to reward them in some way.
27:54And that's how we ended up with the modern meaning of giving someone a tip at the end, perhaps, of
27:59a good meal.
28:00Very good.
28:05Perfect.
28:06Thank you so much.
28:07You're not getting a tip.
28:08Now then, Stephen, let's escape.
28:12Can we start with a vowel, please, Rachel?
28:14Thank you, Stephen.

28:16And another.

28:23And another.
28:25S.
28:26And another consonant, please.

31:17Atomizer.
31:18Yes, there's one.
31:19And isometry.
31:21Isometry, the study of?
31:23It is when in maths particularly, a transformation takes place without any change to the shape or size of a
31:30particular figure.
31:31So you might be rotating it or reflecting it in some way.
31:34So it doesn't change, but it's transformed in the way you look at it.
31:37Thank you so much for that.
31:40Brilliant.
31:41No idea what you're talking about.
31:4289-49.
31:44Chris on 89 into the final numbers game.

33:40Excellent score.
33:40Not too bad.
33:41You take this back to Denny.
33:43Yes.
33:44Don't take it into the ring with you,
33:46because it's heavy and you could do somebody some damage with it.
33:48It might work, then.
33:50And we shall see Chris Weldon tomorrow with four wins.
33:54Well done. Excellent game.
33:56Congratulations.

34:11because there's no idea what's in that.
