00:08we've traveled the country meeting the everyday Australians whose lives have
00:13been changed by the magic of the piano placing our trusty upright at busy train
00:21stations thank you thank you very much shopping centers and even an airport are
00:29you looking for a piano along the way we've heard musicians from all backgrounds
00:39I'm a zookeeper I'm a mum I'm a hundred hundred and we've learned why they play I just feel the
00:51music
00:52I don't think about the problems that I have when I play the piano one of the best feelings in
00:58the
00:58world I'd love bringing joy and happiness to people make them feel something they hadn't
01:05felt that day all right here we go watching closely was musical superstar Guy Sebastian
01:14and pianist extraordinaire Andrea Lamb she has that something that can't be taught it's very beautiful
01:22sense of phrasing and line where they chose a special player from each location to perform at
01:30one of the country's most prestigious venues my mind's blown the City Recital Hall in Sydney oh wow
01:38with the help of their mentors so start up really really slow our invited five have just one week to
01:46prepare for their life-changing performance that fills me with a bit of nerves we don't have a
01:51whole lot of time I've never had a whole stay to myself before feeling a bit shaky like he's to
01:58my
01:58hand all my stresses and anxieties are really high sorry in front of a packed out theatre can these regular
02:12Australians transform into concert pianists I'm really hoping it can all come together we want
02:20this to be a beautiful moment go out there give it your all it's a really special night
02:36just weeks ago our amateur pianists brought public spaces around the country to life
02:44now with only seven days to the concert Guy and Andrea begin their special one-on-one mentoring
02:51sessions oh my gosh really excited getting them ready for the big night where are we this is
03:00amazing guy Sebastian he's an amazing artist yes what an incredible opportunity to have that one-on-one
03:07time with him hello Caitlin I'm a really big fan of Angie up so amazing I get to be mentored
03:14by her
03:14hello CJ I've come down from Tasmania you've made the long trip I think you can say Sydney's a little
03:21bit different from regional Western Australia how are you feeling since circular key I've had time to have
03:29it sink in now and I'm quite nervous for next week but I'm also I'm just grateful I get this
03:35opportunity
03:35to finally put this little song to this beautiful stage in this beautiful venue coming up we first
03:42met busy mum of two Erin at circular key my dad is former rugby league player his name is Steve
03:49Mortimer oh
03:50wow he is currently living with a form of dementia brought on through the head knocks through right
03:57yeah repetitive head trauma with rugby league she performed a moving tribute to her dad who the
04:03country knows best as NRL legend Steve Mortimer how's Steve going you know we
04:20are further progressed down the line with it now sentences and words don't necessarily make sense
04:26or don't come out as fluidly now yeah that's what gets you Erin brings a lot of heart to the
04:33concert
04:33grief pays me a visit every night and there's a lot of people who will be watching that have had
04:41this
04:41kind of thing happen in their life and it's very hard to put in words but Erin's managed to do
04:45that in
04:45this beautiful tribute to Steve her dad I'm a little nervous I performed the song that day
04:50the circular key but when you put it onto a stage and you're gonna have an audience I think the
04:55nerves overcoming and maybe getting a bit emotional as I play it yeah I don't want you to be thinking
05:02of oh am I gonna hit the wrong chord or what if I mess up that doesn't matter right let
05:08go of any
05:09expectation or fear of making a mistake I'm worried that the emotion of the song and the lyrics will
05:17overcome me guy told me to put that out the window but I'm still quite worried that that's that's gonna
05:24be hard to do I'm nervous I'm usually playing in my my room for my spy myself with my family
05:34and then
05:35coming here it's like it's mind-blowing we first met an unsure 16 year old CJ when he ventured out
05:45of
05:45his bedroom and into a packed Queen Street mall back in Brisbane what drew you to the piano I never
05:53fit in at school probably because I am slightly on the spectrum I use music to just communicate with
06:00people and within seconds he knew everyone's socks off wow he's a beast thank you fantastic so what are
06:15you thinking of playing box to Carter and fugue ah minor okay wonderful with CJ there's so much
06:24potential there he can clearly play the piano and has really good musical instincts but he's playing
06:35the whole piece really fast stop this piece has so much in it but I think it needs to have
06:44pacing so
06:45that it feels like a much more gradual build up gotcha CJ needs to create more contrasts a sense of
06:51pacing so I think having moments of silence is really important so start really really slow so
06:57you give yourself heaps of time down because you arrive there and then build it up really really
07:02slowly like imagining like this this very slow build up from that okay okay compared to my bedroom
07:10this is a very nerve-wracking when I'm nervous I sometimes play too fast everyone's with you you
07:17you have them take your time CJ's got a lot of homework but I'm really excited to take him out
07:25of those comfortable spaces and then bring him to the City Recital Hall CJ isn't the only pianist that
07:34Andrea has high hopes for at the upcoming concert when we first met Caitlin back at Broadway Shopping
07:42Center her talent and compassion warmed everyone's hearts you teach your brother music you were saying
07:49yeah because people wouldn't teach him why wouldn't they um because he had Down syndrome and they thought
07:54that he was less capable you want I think is what are you gonna do I wanted Lachlan to have
07:59the same
07:59opportunities that I had when learning the piano it's not a person out there isn't smiling right now
08:09you as a big sister to Lockie was so beautiful and how you shared that through music but I really
08:15want a chance for you to shine by yourself so is there a piece that you absolutely love
08:21Allegra G concerto it's one of my favorite pieces ah when I saw what she was playing I thought ah
08:28she
08:28does want to shine she does need her moment this is a piece that has a lot of passion and
08:37sass and
08:38fire very technically difficult arpeggios going all over the place Jen's voicings bring out the melody
08:49it's a big showcase for her so Allegra de concerto it's supposed to be the larger-than-life party piece
08:56so I want to have a little bit more of that in your playing we're going to be in the
08:59city recital
09:00hall thousands of people be a bit more of a diva I totally want to see Caitlin have her diva
09:10moment be like yes this is me Andrea wants me to be like a soloist and I'm naturally shy
09:23so but I'm really determined to make local proud and I hope this shows that I'm a great role model
09:34in Victoria it was rock and roll loving 19 year old Lewis who did his family proud it's really special
09:42to have my dad there after all he's been going through in this treatment my dad was diagnosed with
09:47cancer recently and there's a couple of months really tough this one's for Dada everybody's
09:58moving with Lewis at home in Perth supporting his dad hello Lewis the mentoring session with Guy is via
10:08video call we need something really big and really powerful to open the show my brain immediately went
10:15to you Lewis to kick off this concert with something really fun high energy and I don't know why but
10:25I
10:25cannot get this picture out of my mind it's from back to the future when young Marty McFly gets up
10:32and
10:32he and he grabs a guitar and he starts playing Johnny be good what do you think about that song
10:37it'll be
10:38interesting to try and get away from the guitar stereotype of that song he's gonna be playing all of those
10:43guitar riffs with his right hand and holding the bass part down with his left it's extremely extremely
10:49difficult just to do that let alone to also sing I don't get to see you until rehearsal so that
10:55fills
10:55me with a bit of nerves we're pulling a band together for this we don't have a whole lot of
11:00time I'm
11:01obviously nervous and there's a lot going on for him so I'm really hoping it can all come together we
11:07want this to be a beautiful moment for Lewis and his family all right Lewis well I'll see you in
11:11Sydney
11:11I can't wait man it's gonna be awesome I can't wait you ready over here it was at Sydney Airport's
11:19International Terminal that we first met 92 year old stockman Peter Salmon and his mate Rosie
11:27who together have been preserving Peter's language how many people do you know who speak your language now
11:33me only oh wow thank goodness for Rosie to track down Peter and to preserve it in this way singing
11:42at the airport that's one thing but what are you both hoping to get out of the concert just the
11:48chance
11:49to platform Peter's language to a huge audience and Peter and I were chatting we just want to share
11:56everything that we do with others and we would be so honored if you would perform with us whether that's
12:02playing or singing absolutely it's such an honor if we've got Peter's blessing I just want to share
12:09with everybody I love to share with everybody I feel really honored it's more than just a performance
12:18this is about something so much bigger guy is the most incredible musician oh he said his spirit is
12:30really feeling strong good I'm just wondering if we start with Peter having you say a few words and
12:39then Rosie joining in to pass it along and then we could do something and then maybe like a cello
12:45or
12:45something symbolizing sharing your language through music even if there's some didgeridoo an indigenous
12:53sound yeah look I feel pretty nervous to be honest with you I feel the pressure of wanting to do
12:59a
12:59good job not just for Peter in his language but but musically it's making sure we're remembering the
13:05reason of why we're doing it we're doing it because we're trying to immortalize something that's very
13:12important I reckon my old grandfather would be really really proud of it that we you know keeping the
13:19language going and hearing about this if he was still alive I think he would have been really proud about
13:26it
13:36it's one day before the concert and it's the players only chance to rehearse on stage at Sydney's
13:44prestigious city recital hall here we are the gang this is so exciting tomorrow when all the guests and
13:51everyone comes to go and see you perform they go through that door but we're going through the
13:56stage door come with me thank you guys this is the first time they get to meet each other and
14:05see
14:06the venue come on out this is the city recital hall wow soak it in amazing wow that's
14:21I've never had the whole stage for myself before I'm feeling a bit shaky like he's to my hand I
14:29was
14:29born out on a station I live my life it's on the station so to be on stage I feel
14:37a bit nervous
14:40dad he's been to this venue with me before we've watched music here together it's just so special I
14:46can't I can't put into words we have finished our line check and we are good for there's a lot
14:55going
14:55on yeah how you feeling yeah I'm a bit nervous there's a lot of people doing things for the
15:01first time together on stage it is tomorrow night so it's you know oh there you go that will get
15:09sorted
15:13so we're back to watch the rehearsal you don't know each other you don't know you what you're
15:18performing or anything this is a treat in itself it's time for Lewis our show opener Lewis is only 19
15:27but he loves the old-school music his dad is a big influence in his life it's good to see
15:32you in the flesh
15:32my dad today he was feeling a bit ill getting on the plane and almost wasn't able to come so
15:39all my
15:40stresses and anxieties are really high should we kick off you guys ready yeah a bit nervous about Lewis
15:49concerts tomorrow we haven't seen him in the flesh play this song and we're throwing a band up there with
16:05him Lewis is a weapon of a piano player but the problem is we're relying on him to open this
16:15show
16:15with a bang with energy and you know pizzazz yeah really hammered up like I don't care even if you
16:23if
16:23you take it out you spin right around and like I wouldn't care if you even jumped jumped off I
16:30need him to just be the show opener we all know he is I hope this brings some relief to
16:40my dad and
16:43the performance really uplifts him Caitlin we have dressed this stage for you it's your turn I can
16:55see where the budget's gone 14 but look how she's leaning into it she's just amazing Caitlin is
17:12definitely trying to hone into her inner demon there are moments where it's just flying and it's
17:18fantastic but in the bigger moments I'm curious to see whether she's going to be able to really step
17:26into her own space on her own terms have you thought about how you're going to get up at the
17:31end could
17:32you just like you could just like totally that's it could be the show moment Andrea and Guy told me
17:40to finish as if like I've earned the piece instead of walking out really shy which is what I tend
17:45to
17:45do use your left foot to repel you up with that I'm not very much of a performer so this
17:53can be a bit
17:54hard yeah piano players need a little mic drop moment it's time for Peter and Rosie hi he's the
18:07last speaker of his language on the planet and Rosie who's a linguist she has turned his language into
18:13music this is a moment of history yeah we've brought two incredible musicians to join us for this song
18:22William Barton who is a master of his instrument and the other is Sally Mayer on cello we're feeling
18:32an enormous amount of pressure whenever there's more elements you never quite know because one
18:37thing might go a little bit astray so it always adds that level of uncertainty I've got to sing in
18:47Peter's language and it's it's difficult and I just don't want to butcher it that's Peter's grandson
18:55Mitch we'll take this knowledge that you were giving to us saying your language is safe oh pass it on
19:02to
19:02our children and on to the make them so happy pass it over to him well I still got a
19:08bit of a life in me
19:09yeah that's gonna be a moment
19:19oh it's so good it's so good thank you so good
19:33CJ at the mentoring session we talked a lot about the structure of it a sense of pacing throughout this
19:40piece
19:40because there's lots of really high intensity moments he gets really excited and when CJ gets
19:47excited it tends to go a little bit faster and if this goes any faster I think that it may
19:57get a little
19:58out of control sorry I'm micromanaging here but if you could like you could like have a dip in there
20:06so
20:06that you've got more to come out from this is a huge change from where I normally play adrenaline
20:12was pumping can be a little bit hard when you're up there not to go too fast and get carried
20:20away in
20:21the moment the challenge will be to be able to rein it in so it's not always go from zero
20:33to 100 you
20:35know if you can get that right it'll be a total showstopper
20:48we are moving on to our final rehearsal of the day with Erin I'm still quite nervous that the emotion
20:56of it all I might I might not be able to get the words out coming up Erin come on
21:02up to the stage
21:04hello she has written a song a lullaby to her dad he has dementia three four
21:19sorry I might try one more time I'm so sorry got a little overcome there oh gosh that's definitely
21:31not it Erin she's reaching for those keys with utter fear can you do it one more time for me
21:41just this
21:42time don't even think just don't even think about it it's hard to explain the freeze that happens I
21:48still get it there's this weird like block that goes between your brain and your hands and your fingers
21:54with nerves can I give you a hug yes please with the the emotion of the song oh I feel
22:02like I can't
22:02finish the lyrics and no matter like anything no matter what happens it's gonna be amazing yeah
22:07whatever happens it's gonna feel real and it's gonna be a beautiful tribute so yeah
22:19the big night is finally here let's do this show on nerves and anticipation are building as our pianists
22:29prepare to perform in front of a packed out city recital hall this is where I'm gonna be playing
22:36do you wanna see look oh there's so many people oh there's so many people yeah yeah how you feeling

22:57be fun to watch all of the performances and I'm excited to see some good piano playing I'm so proud
23:04but he's so happy just to be on the stage in front of all these people it's what he's always

30:35Let's go.
30:46Hi, everyone.
30:47My name is Caitlin, and I'm 14 years old.
30:49Today, I've dedicated my performance to my family who are here tonight
30:53and especially my brother, Lachlan, who is somewhere in the crowd today.
30:57Hi, Lachlan.
31:03I just know that you're going to be on this stage one day with me,
31:06performing with me together.
31:08And I'm really excited to play for you tonight,
31:11and I hope you enjoy it.
31:36Every time, I'm like,
31:37What the hell?
31:38Yeah, what the hell?
31:39What the actual?
31:40Oh, my goodness.
31:53Her touch is beautiful.
31:54It is, isn't it?
32:09Look at Lachlan.
32:11He's just...
32:22You can really hear, like, she's taken Andrea's notes.
32:25Yes.
32:25And just, like...
32:26She's got them.
32:58You did it!
33:01You did it!

33:06Oh, yeah!
33:07She killed it.
33:08She did it!

33:09She's played it.
33:09Oh, yeah.
33:24Oh
33:28What were you doing at 14 not that
33:33You did so good. You did so good. Thank you feel good that finish. Thank you set stage
33:39Rosie and Peter next. Every so often you witness something so rare and so profound
33:44You'll always remember where you were when you saw it at 92
33:50Peter is at in my elder, and he's the last person in the world to speak his language
33:57Rosie is a linguist who is helping keep Peter's language alive through music
34:02I want you to focus on your language. Okay, your language is the important one
34:06Right mother. Yeah, okay. It's my absolute honor to introduce you to Peter and Rosie
34:13Go ahead and not a garra. My name is Rosie and this is Nidigura Peter Salmon
34:36Peter's songwriting is legacy work
34:39It's the kind of work that Peter wants to invite everybody and anybody to be a part of
34:47And we are all here to build something bigger than what currently is
34:52We're here to make this wonderful man's dream
34:57Come true, and it's a true honor. We hope you enjoy
35:03You're here
35:05Be sure you enjoy
35:24see you
35:55Wow, it's beautiful.
36:01Baba, will you go?

38:56I'm here, Pop, and so are all the other young ones.
39:00We'll take this language that you're giving us
39:03and the land that you're handing over
39:06and we'll take care of it.
39:08We'll pass it on to our children and to theirs
39:12and we'll keep your dream alive
39:13and the legacy going.
39:15Thank you, Pop.
39:16Shh, shh, shh.
39:17Shh, shh, shh, shh.
39:19Oh, my God.
39:36Let them see you.
39:37Get it away!
39:55Oh, good job.
39:56Bless you.
40:00Anyone need a tissue?
40:02Thank you so much.
40:04Nailed it.
40:07Nailed it.
40:08Nailed it.
40:10Well done, Peter.
40:12In Brisbane's Queen Street Mall,
40:14this 16-year-old took the brave step
40:18with a performance that absolutely floored us.
40:22I can't wait to introduce you to CJ.
40:34Oh, I'm feeling it.
40:44My name is CJ.
40:45I'm 16 years old from Launceston, Tasmania.
40:48Today I'm going to be playing Barks, Ticata and Fugue in D minor,
40:52but with a little twist.
41:22I'll make one of the best.
41:24CJ!
41:25Chingy!
41:39Look at his dad too, he's going like this.
42:10He's milking the drama. He's got them in the palm of his hand.
42:14Yeah.
42:22Yeah, he's singing though.
42:48Hey!
43:09Get them shoulders going, Mace.
43:13I've never heard bars like this before.
43:26It's a little hot and it's bloody. Look at him! I can't believe it!
43:43Another round of applause for CJ!
43:49Holy crap.
43:52That was incredible.
43:54Can we do that again?
43:56I love that. That's, that's, that's an exciting one.
44:03Everyone's crushed it. Everyone.
44:06Totally.
44:07That's not a hiccup.
44:09Wow!
44:11Yay!
44:12Fantastic!
44:14It's pretty funny, wouldn't it?
44:18Musicians for Erin, come on out.
44:24I'm Erin, I'm 38 years old and I'm from Sydney.
44:28I'm gripping you a little bit.
44:29No, you gripped me, you gripped me.
44:32She must be feeling alive.
44:34The hardest part about loving someone with dementia is just seeing someone that was just...
44:40She's the one super hero to you.
44:43I'm the most nervous of it.
44:44No.
44:45I think she was the most nervous.
44:47So here's to you, the truest of blues.
44:53And I'll be born singing for you.
45:01I love him so much.
45:06Please welcome to the City Recital Hall, Erin.
45:20Let's go Erin!
45:22Let's go!
45:26Wow.
45:28My name's Erin and I'm not gonna lie, this is pretty bloody special.
45:33I also am very nervous, my hands are quite shaky, but tonight I'll be performing my original song, Lullaby for
45:40the Old Man, a song I penned for my dad.
45:44You know, the country knows my dad is one of Australia's greatest rugby league players, but to me, he is
45:50ultimately the greatest dad of all time.
45:53He sadly can't be with us tonight, but I look forward to being able to sit with him and watch
46:00this back.
46:00You know, music is something he can still very much lock into and enjoy with us all.
46:05So with that in mind, I dedicate this song tonight to my dad, to my family, and to anyone out
46:13there who is working through this unique type of grief in real time.
46:17Thank you very much.
46:19Very nice, thank you.
46:21Oh, gorgeous.
46:23Gorgeous, thank you.
46:33One, two, one, two, three.
46:54Grief gays me a visit every night.
47:00I bath time, books in bed, and then I turn out the light.
47:05I sing the same song that you'd sing, of sunshine and the rain.
47:11But man, the pain, the pain.
47:18Sadness gently snuggles in.
47:22Cause I think of all your wisdom, and how you take things on the chin.
47:29Life's unfair that I know, cause you deserve to be living free.
47:37So I sing a lullaby for the old man, who could do what no one else can.
47:51He lifted up the rest, never pounded on his chest, but he loved how he loved.
48:01And dad would be so proud of us.
48:03So here's to you, the truest blues, and I'll keep on singing for you.
48:15A loyal son and brother, that's for sure.
48:19The most loving husband to his wife you ever saw.
48:26Now she's the one that carries him, upholds his dignity.
48:32Despite the noise, she brings him joy and blouse unconditionally.
48:41So I sing a lullaby for the old man,
48:48That could do what no one else can.
48:55He played the odd mistake, but he learned and gravitated to love.
49:03He did it all for love.
49:07So here's to you, the truest blues, and I'll keep on singing.
49:18For you.
49:23Oh, Erin, you nailed it.
49:26My goodness.
49:27You nailed it.
49:31You totally nailed it.
49:39Oh my God.
49:47We can breathe now.
49:48Oh my God.
49:49We can breathe now.
49:54Golly.
49:57Oh.
50:01Okay, that was good.
50:02We got through it.
50:02We got through it.
50:07I just feel that that song that she writes is a lament for her father,
50:11and to be able to keep it together like that, incredibly proud, and so would he be.
50:15Oh, darling.
50:17Couple of shaky notes, but that's all right.
50:19No, you were amazing.
50:20Nah, I feel good.
50:21What's the saying?
50:21What's the saying?
50:22You slayed?
50:23Yes, you slayed.
50:24You slayed.
50:24I'm like 14.
50:25Thank you, mate.
50:28Before we treat you to one last performance, I'd like to please call back on stage our extraordinary
50:34pianists tonight.
50:35Come on out.
50:36Lewis, Erin, Caitlin, Rosie and Peter, and CJ.
50:46And, of course, also our very own Andrea Lamb and Guy Sebastian.
50:57I hope you all feel extraordinary.
50:59You did an incredible job tonight, and congratulations.
51:02I am so proud of you all.
51:05This has been an extraordinary evening, and you all completely shone.
51:10It honestly reminded me of the power of that instrument they're standing in front of.
51:13And it was just magical, just such a mix from 92 years old down to 14 years old.
51:19We had it all.
51:20Incredible.
51:21Please, once again, thank Lewis, Erin, Caitlin, Rosie and Peter, and CJ.
51:33Yeah!
51:34Yeah!
51:45Now, Andrea Lamb and Guy Sebastian are going to perform a very special rendition of Guy's
51:51song, The Keys.
51:53So lovely.
51:54I was more than a project.
51:57Just some pieces of rubber.
52:01Some things you can't polish.
52:03It's better tomorrow.
52:04Concert was incredible.
52:07It was the people, the noise, the vibes.
52:11It was...
52:12I loved every second of it.
52:14It was great.
52:20I had a good time.
52:22One of the best.
52:27It feels so incredible that there were so many people here tonight who heard Peter's language.
52:33And it's only because of this incredible old man that they all heard it.
52:41Andrea told me to channel my inner diva, and I feel like I did that very well.
52:47As much as it was a celebration for Dad, it was a celebration for Mum, and it was really
52:51special to have her in the audience.
52:53Baskin, the man that he was, and what she did to support his career, and just the man
52:57he was.
52:58That's why you hold the key.
53:00I am so proud.
53:02That was fantastic.
53:04Love you.
53:04This experience to me has been, like, one of the greatest experiences of my life.
53:08Yeah, Lord, you put me up strong, but it's my turn now.
53:13Just know that you're safe in this place.
53:15No raging fire will ever burn us down, when I was just full walls, with no ceiling, and
53:26even all the pain was peeling.
53:29You're so hard to put your heart in.
53:33Oh, it took a woman like you to see your records, and know what to sound it.
53:43So I'll never let you go, never let you go.
53:49Only you can build a man like me.
53:56And that's why you hold the keys.
54:04That's why you hold the keys.
54:17Andrea Lamb, ladies and gentlemen.
