Nicola Sturgeon has said she is “probably happier” than she otherwise would have been following the saga surrounding the investigation into the SNP’s finances. The former Scottish first minister – who steps down this week as an MSP – was arrested in June 2023 as Police Scotland investigated how funds were spent by the party, dubbed Operation Branchform, but was released without charge and later cleared. Her now estranged husband – and former SNP chief executive – Peter Murrell was subsequently charged with embezzling £459,000 from the party over 12 years and is due to appear in court again in May.

00:00Just finally, this announcement coincides with a debate this afternoon that the Tonys are bringing about, single-sex spaces.
00:06I mean, don't get me wrong, I think there's been periods over the last few years where I have maybe
00:11thought I've completely fallen out of love with politics
00:14and I never want to have anything to do with it again once I'm out of Parliament, but that's been
00:20fleeting.
00:21I think when I published my book last year and started doing lots and lots of big events around that,
00:28I felt the love of politics, the appetite for politics, small p-politics, reactivate in me.
00:37I'm leaving frontline politics, I'm leaving elected politics, but I don't think I'm the kind of person who'll ever be
00:43completely silent on the issues I care most about.
00:48And so no, and you know what, it hasn't, and I'm really grateful for this because I do recognise that
00:54it might have been different.
00:54It hasn't soured me as a person.
00:59On the contrary, you know, some of the things that have happened in the last couple of years, last three
01:03years,
01:04I would dearly love to be able to erase and have them never happen.
01:09But I also know that they've made me a stronger person.
01:14They've made me somebody who's got a much keener appreciation of what matters in life, who matters in life,
01:21and it maybe sounds bizarre to say, but I'm probably a happier person,
01:25having gone through the last few years, than I might have been otherwise.
