Seth and Sean kick off the show talking about the Rockets' 132-124 loss to a bad Bulls team, if something is going on with Tari Eason, and Kevin Durant for passing Michael Jordan to be 5th in all-time scoring.
Transcript
00:00I got some big picture thoughts on the Rockets, Seth, but as long as we're playing Craig Ackerman
00:04rolling in with last night's game, oh my god. Oh my gosh. Oh my god. No, yeah, you know what,
00:10Ackerman, I can't, I can't deny that it was, if you ignore the fact that the Rockets were playing
00:16an atrocious basketball team that had won five of their previous 25 games. Entertaining game.
00:22Right, look, hey, Rockets, ooh, they inspirationally fought themselves back from a 20-point
00:28deficit in the first half, first quarter, and it came down to the wire, and then the Rockets
00:36were screwed on a flag, nah. Oh, that call that they were talking about at the beginning of that
00:41cut, the Rockets were down five with like 11 seconds left. They were down five, Durant had
00:46hit a couple of threes to keep the game within reach, but then he pushes on an inbound and gets
00:52a flag, just like he did a couple of games ago. It's the way they call it in the NBA
00:55now.
00:56He did it. He done it. It's like, I can't, your joke is pissed off about it. Other people
01:01are irate about it. Like, he done it. That's, like, it's, there's no, you might not like the
01:07way they call it, but he did it. Yeah. And, um, and it's, it's the Bulls. It was, you start
01:13off, what'd they start off, 0 for 16 on threes? They were, at least. That was difficult.
01:16At least, oh, I know they were 0 for 12 at one point. They were 0 for 16. 0 for
01:2016.
01:20They started off 0 for 16. And the Bulls were, were just scorching red hot. I mean,
01:25the Bulls, well into the second half, the Bulls were over 50% from three point range.
01:30Sorry. They started off 0 for 13 from three. Yeah. They finished two for 17. So there you
01:36go. They made two three pointers the whole night. Yeah. Rockets. They only took 17. Wow.
01:41They just, apparently after the first 13, they're like, we should probably stop shooting these
01:45right now. Um, I remember that I copied and pasted these stats at 3 AM. So we'll see about
01:51this. We'll, we'll, we'll see if I, if I, uh, performed as poorly as the Rockets. Yeah.
01:56Yeah. No, the only reason I say like 17 just doesn't sound like many three pointers in an
02:00NBA game. Either way. Uh, it was a horrible effort defensively. Um, especially early email
02:06Doka. He, he spared nobody in his post game comments. Here he is. Here's email Doka saying
02:13that his team disrespected the game of basketball. Poor start disrespected the game. Um, not prepared
02:19from the get go. Um, just non-aggressive following around, watching them shoot. Um, you know, they
02:27have nothing to lose. They're going to fire away. And, and obviously to give up 41 points
02:32in that first quarter is disappointing. It was one quarter that killed us and weren't prepared
02:36to play at all. Yeah. They, that, that's how they came out. And that's, it's so disappointing
02:40after a weekend where you take care, you, you, you win your two home games and now you
02:44start off the beginning of a, I know they're 11 to 41 Seth from three. Yeah. 41. That was
02:49a, no, I should have realized that as soon as that must've been like first, the first 17
02:52shots, first 17 shots. Yep. Yep. Yep. Um, so yeah. So email Doka pissed. This is not the
02:58way you want to start off a road trip. These guys all have to be on the road together for
03:02the next, however, week or whatever. And you get it started off with a loss to the bulls. The
03:08bulls were five and 20 in their last 25 games. Uh, we had kind of divided the schedule up into
03:16buckets. And this was one of the games that as you're trying to hang around with the Timberwolves
03:21and the nuggets, maybe catch the Lakers. Uh, this was one of the games you're counting on a team that
03:26was five and 20 in its last 25 games. Um, so, uh, totally disappointing, uh, infuriating.
03:35It was an entertaining game. At least I'll say I did like the way they fought back,
03:39but they fought back against the bad. They fought back against the team. That's eventually
03:42going to give up a bunch of baskets to you. You got to get some stops. And that was the
03:46worst part to me was the worst part to me. Wasn't the, the first, well, the first quarter
03:50was bad, but the bulls were just so scorching hot and you literally weren't making any three
03:54pointers. Like that's the math in the NBA is not, is going to work against you. If, if the,
03:59if one team's shooting threes, the rate they were, and you're not literally not making any,
04:04then, then you're going to fall behind early in a game. That's fine. To me, they, that they fought
04:09back, took a lead. And then all the same defensive stuff that was popping up all game popped up at
04:15the end of the game is really, really disappointing. Right. Yeah. I mean, like it's a never, it's not
04:19just dumb luck that a team's able to hit 50% of their threes. If you make it hard for
04:23them,
04:24it's a, that there's a good chance they don't score a bad basketball team doesn't score 50%
04:29of their threes. Right. Um, the, I mean, Shane Goon, Shane Goon gets a triple double after almost
04:34He was sensational. Yeah. He took it. Look, and when he's got spacing, then he can, he can punish a
04:42team that's horribly, horrible defensively in the paint. And so he was taking it to him and he was
04:47doing everything that you want to see. I think Reed Shepard, even like Reed Shepard started off
04:51missing his first five threes. He was three for 14 for the game. The two for 17 was in the
04:56first
04:56half. I apologize about that early error this morning, Sean. Um, but, uh, I, I just, I just
05:03wish, I wish I could just flush a bad loss like this and think, Oh, it's no big deal. But
05:09the
05:09Rockets are also now the, uh, among teams with a 500 or better record, they're tied for the most
05:17losses to a losing team, to a team that's 500 or worse. Wow. I thought their issues lately were
05:23with teams that were good. I guess the issue with teams that are good is they're getting blown out
05:27by those teams. The issues with teams that are bad is that they are losing more than their fair share
05:31of, they're not entertaining games. Yeah, they can show. I mean, it's, it's funny because I think the
05:37perception, uh, is that, okay, well they can show up and they can just basically out talent a bunch of
05:44the bad teams. And that's true, but they haven't done it consistently, right? They're still having
05:48these aberrational weird games like this one where it, uh, yeah, I mean, you got a doke afterwards
05:55complaining about the technicals and the flagrants, but I like the, we've seen this like with a Durant,
06:02the push on the inbounding at the end of the game. We've seen that twice now in the last four
06:07games,
06:08uh, I'm in Thompson gets a flagrant early on and the, in the first quarter, okay,
06:14we're going to blame, are we going to blame this loss on the flagrant in the first quarter?
06:18No, God, no, no. And, uh, you know, a joke himself gets two technicals. Yep. Yep. Yep. He got,
06:24he ended up getting kicked out of the game. Yeah. The, the, uh, and as watching last night,
06:28you know, look for this, the big story from the weekend was Reed Shepard from the two games at home,
06:33the Atlantic, the Atlanta game. And then the Miami game, Reed Shepard was awesome in that game.
06:3823 points, 14 assists, most importantly, no turnovers yet for turnovers last night. It felt like more
06:44because again, the turnovers were just so bad. They're just such bad turnovers and he shot five
06:48for 17. Here's the thing about the whole Reed Shepard thing, because the debate has been,
06:52is he a starter? You bring him off the bench. They're running out of guys that are playing
06:57decent basketball right now, whether he starts or comes off the bench. He's one of five guys
07:02that are playing, uh, that are playing satisfactory NBA basketball. Cause Tari Eason is a mess.
07:10Tari Eason only played 14 minutes last night. Tari Eason is closer. I, well, I'm going to say this
07:16knowing full well, there's not a suitable solution to, to backfill him, but at 14 minutes in a game
07:23that ultimately wound up being a close game in the, in the second half, really in the fourth quarter
07:28at 14 minutes last night, Tari Eason's closer to falling out of a, an NBA rotation than he is
07:34being a part, you know, a guy who's getting 26 to 30 minutes in a playoff game right now.
07:40Yeah. Tari Eason's bad. He's a bad basketball player right now. At this point with Tari Eason,
07:44what, I mean, you can only assume that there's something going on either, either physical or
07:50emotional. And, uh, the, do we put it on Udoka for trying to figure this out? Or is it just
07:56simply
07:57it's a Tari Eason thing? What's your theory for what's going on? I don't know. To me, the biggest
08:01thing is he can't shoot. And that's like, cause he's going to, cause he does give good effort
08:06when he's out there, you know, he's crashing the boards, he's athletic, he's long. So you're
08:10getting, you know, he's, so he's playing defense. Like I, I don't think it's a, an effort issue
08:14with Tari Eason. Um, but he used to be so automatic on those corner threes and things like that.
08:20Yeah. And that's what I wanted to just, when it comes to just losing your stroke, what's the
08:25solution for that? What is it? What is it? It's just destroying him there. And it's not,
08:30it can't simply be bad luck. No. And I, and who knows if he's got something going on that's in
08:34his personal life that's affecting his shooting. I think sometimes you get into it. Slumps come
08:39in all shapes and sizes. And I think he's just in a deep, deep slump, maybe even the yips right
08:44now, shooting threes. It's gotta be in his head. I didn't want to use the word every time for you
08:48to use four letter Y word. Um, but I, but I, I have no better thing without knowing that there
08:54is
08:54something else going on. I, you know, what was weird? Like target that's where I'm like, yeah,
08:58I'm not suggesting that there's some kind of tabloid fodder or something. I'm just about,
09:02I I'm kind of just wondering, all right, again, is this at another issue offensively where you
09:08don't trust to do dope is going to be the guy that helps a guy figure out how to get
09:12his
09:12shot. Right. Yeah. Um, or just anything on the offensive side of the ball. It's a, you just
09:17feel frustrated and hopeless. Well, I think, I thought it was interesting at the end of that
09:21heat game on, um, Saturday that on the very end of the game where, uh, the sequence, where,
09:28uh, the heat score to go down one and Jabari grabs the ball to inbound it. And he inbounded
09:35it and got kicked out of bounds or whatever. And then Tari goes and in bounds it. And we
09:39know what happened there. He throws the ball away. But when Jabari had grabbed the ball to
09:42inbound it, Tari was noticeably upset, like yelling at Jabari Smith, like very, like seem like
09:49out of character. So I don't need like me. I think just frustration is probably mounting,
09:53especially like nobody's playing worse than Tari Eason on this team right now. And it's in,
09:57and if we've, if you guys feel like the guy, but you guys are going deep on a guy that
10:00spent 14
10:01minutes on the floor last night. Who's your sixth man. I'll read to you the rest of the names that
10:05played in the game for the Rockets last night. Other than the five starters, Dorian Finney Smith,
10:10eight minutes, took one shot, missed it. Uh, Jay Sean Tate came in for three minutes and
10:15turned the ball over, sailed a pass into the second row. The first time he touched the ball,
10:20Tari Eason, who we mentioned, Clint Capella played four minutes in the game last night.
10:24Aaron holiday came in and gave you 21 minutes. Aaron holiday has been stapled to the bench for
10:29the better part of the last month. I mean, this is just, and Josh Akogi came in for three minutes,
10:33who sometimes he gives you really good minutes. And sometimes he comes in like he's an afterthought.
10:37That's your bench. That's your depth right now. So this is, this is bad, man.
10:42This Rockets team has gotten me to the point where against all odds, I'm looking forward to
10:48hearing what Kendrick Perkins has to say this afternoon. And then to see what Kevin Durant's
10:53response is to it. Yeah. Did we play the email yet? Odoka. Yeah. Yeah, we did. We did. Yeah.
10:59Gosh, I don't even, you want to play it again? No, no, no, no, no. We don't need to do
11:03that.
11:03What about Vanessa? We, we, uh, do you want to play something nice? Yeah, we got a, cause we,
11:08we kind of sailed through it. We didn't recognize really fully, or we didn't acknowledge KD. We
11:14didn't acknowledge it and acknowledge me. And I don't think we did really recognize it fully
11:17cause the game was so big. The game itself was, was wild that, that heat game, but yes, I, I
11:22made
11:22a note to do this because Kevin and Kevin, Kevin Durant was awesome last night too. Yeah.
11:26Shangoon and Durant were great. The rest of the team stunk. Uh, but we got to acknowledge Kevin Durant
11:32Acknowledge me. Passing Michael Jordan for fifth place on the all-time list. Here is Vanessa
11:36Richardson with KD after the game on Saturday. Tonight you passed Michael Jordan on the NBA's
11:41all-time scoring list. Yesterday you told me that he's the blueprint. You told me he's one
11:46of the few people on earth you look up to. What does this moment in milestone mean to you?
11:50Man, it means a lot. I'm just grateful to do it here in front of the great fan base who
11:54showed
11:54me so much love. You know, support me every game and I'm just grateful to be here and man,
12:01what a, what a journey it's been. I'm looking forward to keeping it going.
12:03You told me the first time you really remember watching Michael Jordan play was back in 1997
12:08when the Chicago Bulls took on your hometown Washington Bullets in the first round of the NBA
12:13playoffs. So here's my final question to you. How did that eight-year-old kid become the 37-year-old
12:19man that just passed MJ? You're showing my age right now.
12:22Uh, uh, man, just discipline, hard work, you know, just showing up every day. That's
12:28simple. You know, I got great people around me. I got family, friends, coaches, teammates
12:32that invested in me when they didn't have to. I'm just grateful for everybody along this
12:36journey and I want to keep it going. All right.
12:39It's not hung up on the, uh, how many people he looks up to. He's one of the few people
12:45on
12:45earth that he looks up to. I need some context on that. I, uh, I, I'm very curious about
12:50that. Is Kevin Durant skeptical of the entire human race? I feel like if I had a chance to
12:56meet every person on earth, I feel like there's at least a billion people I might look up to.
13:00Oh yeah. In some regard. I mean, I deal with the old Abraham Lincoln quote. I've never,
13:05I've never met a man who wasn't better at me in at least one thing or in some regard.
13:11Like everybody's better than you in some, in some respect. Durant have at least like
13:1630 or 40. Michael Jordan, one of five people. He's on the Mount Rushmore people. I look up to
13:23I'm sure there's more context to it than there's gotta be. Yeah, there's gotta be the other thing
13:28Vanessa said. I'm like, damn Durant. That's how, you know, you're an older player in the NBA these
13:33days. If you were rooting for the Washington bullets, not the Washington wizards. I just looked it
13:39up. 1997 was the end of the, them being called the bullets in a, uh, in a, in a tip
13:45of the hat
13:45to gun control. Uh, which is, it's true. They changed the name because of that. It's a little
13:54wizard. The Colt 40, the Colt 45s wouldn't have survived because now when the, when the Astros changed
14:01to the Astros, it wasn't out of a fear of a backlash or anything. I think it was that look,
14:06we got the astronauts in Houston. It's kind of a big deal. Let's do this. Let's call them the
14:10Astros. Yep. Um, yeah, but they, the Colt 45s would not have survived if they had never renamed
14:15it. The Astros at some point in the, I would say probably the late eighties, early nineties
14:19probably would have changed. I'll tell you one of the more surprising things I've seen lately,
14:22Seth, is that, um, the Cougs played Idaho in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Yeah. Idaho,
14:29the university of Idaho is named the Vandals. I'm a little surprised that one's surviving here in the
14:342020s, the Idaho Vandals that, uh, were highlighting the besmirchment of buildings and things like
14:41that. Well, that is true. I think there's a historical, uh, something about that. I'm sure,
14:48no, no, I'm sure there is. Have you seen it right? Well, no, I mean, look, honestly,
14:52pirates and Vikings, when you really dig into the way they operated, right. Right. Like, uh, yeah,
14:57they're probably not, probably not the best thing to have your kids idolize and everything to do.
15:04That's my project for today. I'm going to go through all the, all the mascots. And what are
15:09the ones that were shocked are still, uh, surviving here in 2026 into a little bit of the Vikings and
15:15you're like, Oh, wow. Right. Boy, boy. Uh, the, the, the mass murders, the raping and, uh, the enslaving
15:22of, uh, large quantities of people. That's who we want our football team to be. Oh, man. All right.
15:34Uh, pain and Pendergast. You'll have to keep from crying. Vandals is pretty tame, really. Uh, oh,
15:38no, that, yeah, a little bit of graffiti or something compared to a Viking or a pirate. That's a great
15:43point. It's a great point. All right. Uh, pain and Pendergast with you, um, on a, uh, on a Tuesday.
15:52What? Sorry. No, I'm not even going to do it. I was just thinking of all the various groups
15:57of people we could name football teams after in America. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
