00:01We did go through quite a few dogs.
00:03We found you a match.
00:07She certainly ticks the fun blocks.
00:10It isn't just one chihuahua.
00:12It's a trio.
00:14Oh, my God!
00:15She's five months old.
00:18Lisa Jack Russell.
00:20His name is Mushy.
00:24In a quiet corner of the English countryside,
00:28there's a place for those looking for love.
00:31There is only one chance at life.
00:34And I'm missing the dog.
00:35Good girl.
00:36Here, a dedicated team match abandoned dogs.
00:39You've been through a rough time, haven't you?
00:41It's okay, buddy.
00:42With hopeful new owners.
00:45We can trot together.
00:46Let's trot!
00:47A lot of people come to us when they're at a crossroads.
00:50I lost five years of my memory
00:53and I don't think they will ever come back.
00:55And they're putting their trust in us.
01:01Last spring, we installed fixed rig cameras.
01:05Additional support staff.
01:07Do you have any golden retrievers?
01:09We have 20.
01:10And a secluded meeting pen.
01:12Oh, nice. It's locked in here.
01:14To see how lives could be changed forever
01:17with the perfect match.
01:19Oh, my God!
01:20Oh!
01:22You've given him the souvenirs.
01:23Some connections happen in a heartbeat.
01:27Hello, we're here.
01:29You trying to walk? Yeah.
01:30You trying to walk?
01:32But for some, it can take time.
01:37When people connect with a dog,
01:39you're very sexy.
01:40It's not through looks or a type.
01:42It's through a feeling.
01:45That first time the tip of the tail wags,
01:48you just get a little flutter of hope.
01:51I love them.
01:52You know they're a keeper.
02:01Good morning, buddy.
02:04Good morning, woo-hoo!
02:10We're like one big family here.
02:13Hello.
02:14All right, Dave.
02:15Bob.
02:16Cassandra.
02:17Except some of our relatives
02:18like to chew the furniture.
02:22What are you doing?
02:23They're a little bit more destructive
02:25than your average auntie.
02:27Where's your brother's gone?
02:28You don't care.
02:30I think some dogs would rather be an only child.
02:32Little brothers will do that to you.
02:34They'll drive you insane.
02:36But for others, the bigger the family,
02:38the better it is.
02:39When I lived at home with my parents,
02:40we did have six dogs.
02:42Oh, wow.
02:42Six.
02:43Whoa.
02:43What's the difference between six and two?
02:47And it's the same for some people, too.
02:50Mummy, I'm doing push-ups.
02:51Are you ready?
02:52Yeah?
02:53Good workout.
02:55Do you reckon you could train the dog
02:56to do push-ups?
03:01Hello.
03:02Pumped to increase the size of their family
03:05are Daisy, Nancy, Frank
03:08and their mum, Victoria.
03:09It will literally be in luxury.
03:13It can have my bed.
03:15It could have a spare room.
03:17Yeah, it could, to be honest.
03:18Oh, my God, it actually could have its own room.
03:20Girls, know what that means?
03:23Shopping!
03:28We have found them, Matt.
03:35They are a pair of cockapoos.
03:39Oi, oi, oi.
03:41Oi, oi, oi.
03:43We found you two dogs.
03:46There is a girl and a boy.
03:47Oh, yes!
03:49So, they're called Mabel and Milo.
03:52Oh, I love it!
03:53Mabel and Milo!
03:54I would keep the names.
03:56Happy?
03:56Good start.
03:57Happy tears.
03:58Please say happy tears.
03:59OK.
04:01We've been through a very tough few months,
04:05but this is amazing.
04:07I am so happy.
04:08So, what do you think, kids?
04:10Yes.
04:12Go!
04:13Yay, Milo!
04:15This is Milo, and this one is Mabel.
04:18Go!
04:20They're definitely double trouble.
04:22They come in like a ball in a china shop.
04:24Oh, oh!
04:27It is really tricky to tell them apart.
04:30Mabel loves a toy.
04:32She's ball-obsessed.
04:34Ball is life.
04:37Why do you do that?
04:40Milo's definitely the more affectionate one.
04:41He just wants a cuddle.
04:43Best of both worlds, really.
04:46They are the dream team.
04:49Good girl.
04:51Milo and Mabel found themselves here
04:53due to a relationship breakdown.
04:55The owners just couldn't give them what they needed.
04:57You're such a good boy, aren't you?
05:00It's really difficult to find a home for a pair,
05:03especially a pair that have that chaotic side.
05:07But they are just a bundle of joy.
05:10If you love a dog that's got a lot of energy,
05:13then they're perfect.
05:17It's just magical, isn't it?
05:20Shall we open it?
05:21Here we go, kiddos.
05:23In we go.
05:27We are a very close family, aren't we?
05:29Mummy's a little unit.
05:36Sorry, I'm squeezing you, sorry.
05:41Making my babies happy is what I get up for in the morning.
05:45That's my life.
05:47Their happiness is everything to me.
05:52But recently, the home hasn't been as happy as it has been.
05:59Beginning of the year, me and my husband decided to part ways.
06:05And we've been together a very, very long time.
06:0823 years.
06:13Obviously, the house has changed, because Daddy's not there.
06:25There's a void there now.
06:28And I feel that I'm causing them pain and upset.
06:36And all I've ever tried to do is protect them,
06:38because they're like my little lion cubs.
06:40They're my world.
06:42So, we need to bring some happiness back.
06:47I think we need a dog, because sometimes some of us are feeling a bit down.
06:54So, I think it will lift us.
07:05Frank, I don't think I've seen you smile like that for so long.
07:10It would be so lovely to see.
07:14Where are we going?
07:17Such a big day, guys.
07:22Come on, Nick. Up the stairs.
07:24Come on.
07:26Here they come.
07:28Ready?
07:30Yay.
07:32Hi.
07:35Oh, my gosh.
07:38Oh, my gosh. Look at them.
07:40Are you all right, Dice?
07:42Oh, Dice.
07:50Security to dog staff.
07:52Just to let you know, we are expecting a stray on sight soon.
07:58So, we have a lurcher.
08:00He was just sound running down a road.
08:03You're very skinny.
08:04He's one of the skinniest lurchers that I've seen,
08:07and I've been doing this for about nine years now.
08:08He's a very small dog.
08:13I think we need a name for the little guy.
08:16Shall we say Floyd?
08:17Floyd, yeah?
08:19Get you out, shall we?
08:22Oh, he is very skinny, isn't he?
08:27Oh, wow.
08:28I don't think I've ever seen a dog this malnourished.
08:32He literally just looks like a skeleton.
08:34You feel every bit of bone in your body.
08:41You can see how skinny he is.
08:42If he got much skinnier, I dread to think what would happen.
08:45Can you come in? Can you come in?
08:48It's really upsetting to see dogs coming in so malnourished.
08:51It doesn't happen overnight.
08:53You just know that he's been suffering for a long time.
08:56There's a little wag. There's a little wag.
08:59It's not nice at all.
09:03We have got a nutritionist on site that can put us a plan together
09:06just so we can get him, obviously, on the correct diet.
09:11Let's go swallow your diet, shall we?
09:14Yeah, you can see there.
09:17Such a good boy.
09:25Look how fluffy they are.
09:27Oh, my God, it's trying to, like, open it.
09:31Mabel, Milo, come on.
09:35Mabel.
09:36Nancy, do you want to go and get a toy?
09:37Yes.
09:39Go on, then.
09:41Oh, tell us what it is.
09:43Oh!
09:45Ow!
09:47Oh, no!
09:50Oh, hello!
09:55Ready? Ready?
09:58Well done!
10:00OK, you on this one.
10:01Go on, then. It's OK. It's all right.
10:04Mabel's like, I'm having that.
10:05Oh, I love it!
10:08Oh, look!
10:09Oh, you're so clever!
10:11Here, come and get it.
10:13This is literally pure joy.
10:16Go!
10:17Oh, my gosh!
10:20Do you think maybe Frank's a little bit worried by them?
10:23He seems a bit unsure when they sort of jump up or get too animated around him.
10:29Ready?
10:29Hey, what did you find?
10:33What are you thinking?
10:35I don't know.
10:38Right, stop!
10:42No!
10:42Come on!
10:44I don't know if two's going to be a lot.
10:51Everybody has to be on the same page.
10:53It's going to be a lot.
10:56That's it.
10:57Sit!
10:59Come on.
10:59Come on!
11:01It's very clever though, isn't it?
11:03Pork.
11:05Pork.
11:06And Jake.
11:07You're a baby, Jake.
11:07Thank you!
11:17Come on, Johnny.
11:18You've got to get all these trees ready for all your pals.
11:32You sound like a motorbike starting up.
11:37So he's tiny, what does he eat?
11:39Steak.
11:43Camembert, brie.
11:45What, sorry?
11:45He likes his cheese.
11:48I get the Sainsbury's basic.
11:50Willis gets the Presidente.
11:51Yeah.
11:52I try and steal his cheese half the time.
11:54We're going to have to start a savings account just for cheese.
11:58I think.
11:59So he's not really a dog, he's more of a human.
12:01Pretty much.
12:03Making room at their table for one more.
12:06Claire and Brett and their Pomeranian, Willis.
12:10Claire makes two meals at night.
12:12So she'll cook a lovely meal for us.
12:14And then a second meal for Willis.
12:17And it is normally a little bit better.
12:22He eats better than we do, he dresses better than we do.
12:24That little chump-up!
12:25Oh!
12:27Just standing like...
12:29Oh, three legs!
12:30Oh, yeah, he's got three legs as well.
12:33Yeah.
12:33Look at them, he's like, model.
12:35Model legs lots, aren't they?
12:37That's some length, that lads.
12:38It is, it is.
12:39Right, well listen, shall we get you sat down?
12:41Yeah.
12:41Yeah, sounds good.
12:42Right, if you want to make yourselves comfortable on the chairs at the back though.
12:45Sounds good.
12:45Someone will be going shortly to have a chat.
12:54Sit.
12:55Good girl, Nancy.
13:00Well done, girls, that's lovely.
13:04Frank, just remember, they're new to here as well.
13:09We're going to have to teach them to do the calm, chill time, aren't we?
13:13Can you imagine them down the beach?
13:17The last few months, I think Frank feels like sometimes he has to be more mature.
13:25He will worry about me all the time.
13:30But I just want them to be able to be free and be children.
13:35Oh, look, is that Mabel?
13:38She's chillaxing.
13:45Oh, my gosh.
13:47Oh, Mum!
13:49Mum, it's just her.
13:50Sit.
13:51Does it do belly rub?
13:52Yeah.
13:53Mabel, you beautiful girl.
13:56Oh, Frank, she wants you to do it.
13:58Hey!
13:59Frank, get the ball then.
14:02Oh, no, she wants you, Frank.
14:05Yeah!
14:06I'm going to get a ball.
14:07Oh, my gosh!
14:10Oh, Frank, look!
14:12Oh!
14:14Oh, Frank!
14:16Mate, I'm just sick, mate.
14:19Oh!
14:26How bad is it?
14:28Good girl!
14:29Good girl!
14:31Good girl!
14:33Good girl!
14:34Good girl!
14:35Good girl!
14:36Good girl!
14:38Mum just hasn't stopped smiling, has she?
14:40I think she's just really happy watching the children just build a really lovely bond with the pair of them.
14:48Oh, who's going to get it?
14:50Oh, I love the fact that they're so energetic.
14:53Yeah, they're so fast.
14:56My mum is wonderful.
14:58I think a dog would be nice for my mum.
15:01I think she needs it.
15:02She's got no one there by her side anymore.
15:06So, I think it will make her more happy.
15:11What have you got, Mabel?
15:13Do you want a belly rub, beautiful girl?
15:17Hey!
15:17You are so beautiful!
15:18Mum, I really want these dogs.
15:20You are so beautiful!
15:22Oh!
15:24Oh, I love them!
15:25Where's it gone?
15:25Oh, my God, Frank!
15:28I was looking at my babies.
15:30They were so happy.
15:33Them dogs done that.
15:35I love it!
15:36They love a tennis ball, don't they?
15:40I'd better get them on subscription.
15:43We've got a match, and I think they're perfect.
15:57Right, stay, stay, stay, stay.
15:59Stay.
16:00I know, I know, it's scary.
16:0214.7.
16:04Oh, good boy.
16:05Floyd is currently 14 kilograms.
16:08I'd expect him to be weighing
16:10maybe between, like, 18 to 20 kilograms.
16:14So, he does need to gain at least a quarter of his body weight.
16:17So, yeah, he's not out of the woods yet, unfortunately.
16:22He is so hungry.
16:25He cannot wait.
16:27But we won't give it to him and Mabel
16:29because he's just gonna inhale this.
16:33Floyd is so severely underweight,
16:35so it could be very dangerous for him
16:37to have too much food too quickly.
16:40So, this is a slow feeder.
16:42The prongs, they just help him slow down his eating.
16:47Right, sir.
16:49Wanna eat that?
16:51There we go.
16:54Is that nice?
16:55It's lovely to see him finally get a proper meal
16:58and getting some nutrients inside of him.
17:01He's enjoying that.
17:05Hopefully, it'll make him feel a bit better.
17:07He's definitely in the right place now.
17:09He'll be able to get fed up, won't you?
17:12Once he realises we are actually gonna feed him,
17:15he's not gonna have to do this.
17:17Right, let's get you out of here
17:18before you have the biscuits everywhere
17:19and everyone else doesn't have any biscuits.
17:24Hello!
17:25Hi!
17:26Hello!
17:27Hello!
17:29Oh!
17:30Look at you!
17:31Oh, hello!
17:34This is Willis.
17:36He's a lover.
17:38Just loves people.
17:39Loves attention.
17:41How long have you had him?
17:43Eight years.
17:43Eight years.
17:45Even since he was a puppy,
17:46he was always wanting to be on your lap
17:47and, like, always wanting to be, like, with people.
17:50Yeah, so I think it's just a Willis thing, I don't know.
17:54He's absolutely gorgeous.
17:56I mean, do you spoil him?
17:58Yeah, yes, very much so.
18:00I think we overcompensated after he lost the leg.
18:04He jumped off, like, a chair probably about this size
18:06when he was a puppy and he broke it.
18:11I took him into work when he was about eight months old
18:13and he was just sitting on a colleague's lap
18:16and he jumped off it
18:18and, unfortunately, it broke, like, his leg in half, basically.
18:22So, on the x-ray, it was just, like, completely cut through.
18:26The vets, they were like,
18:28OK, if anything happens to him again, you need to amputate.
18:32I came home from work
18:33and I brought my bike in, as usual.
18:36Willis got too excited, ran, trying to get to Claire.
18:41He just sort of slid and then he hit the wall
18:43and he just squealed in this horrible scream
18:46and I was like, oh, no, not again.
18:47The moment you heard the scream, you knew what had happened.
18:51You knew something had happened again.
18:52It was horrible. It was really horrible.
18:54So, how old was he when he...
18:56He was quite young. He was, er...
18:59It was around six months when the first break happened
19:01and then it was a year later when he broke it again.
19:03OK, so he's been in a tripod for a long time.
19:06Yes. Yeah.
19:07Completely pain-free then.
19:09Yeah, exactly.
19:10The flip side of that is then we are still overprotective.
19:13As opposed to us feeling like, oh, he's back to normal,
19:16we're still treating him as if he's got the broken leg.
19:21Have you given him any consideration
19:22as to what kind of friend you want for Willis?
19:25Yeah.
19:26I'd love a big dog, but as long as it matches
19:29Willis' temperament, Willis' needs.
19:31Yeah.
19:31You know, at the end of the day,
19:33the most important thing is that Willis is happy.
19:35Yeah.
19:36We'll have a look, see what we've got,
19:38and we'll be back with you, OK?
19:39Thank you so much.
19:40OK, see you so much.
19:41See you.
19:43What have we got?
19:45I'm drawn to Dory.
19:49She is the most beautiful dog.
19:53Soulful eyes.
19:54She's really, really sweet.
19:57She came to us as a stray.
19:59She was actually tied to a tree.
20:03She is quite nervous.
20:07Dory loves other dogs,
20:08and I think she gets a lot of her confidence
20:10from being around them,
20:12especially with the smaller dogs.
20:15Willis is confident with people,
20:17and I think Dory needs someone to learn from.
20:22and I think they can really help each other.
20:27Hey, Dory.
20:29She can meet some new people.
20:31Good girl.
20:33Good luck, Willis.
20:35Be a good boy.
20:39Seeing your dog in pain is pretty horrible.
20:44You don't want them to ever be hurt like that again.
20:47I'm nervous now.
20:52Since his accident,
20:54I think that we've coddled him
20:57and deprived him of being able to be a dog.
21:02We pulled him away from situations.
21:04He's tiny,
21:05so big dogs that, like, might come up to him.
21:08In my mind, I think, oh, they might hurt him accidentally.
21:11I'm picking him up maybe when he doesn't need to be picked up.
21:15Oh, Willis.
21:18Us being overprotected because of his leg
21:20has affected his confidence with other dogs.
21:23He's just stuck in a human world.
21:27If you like her,
21:28then you'll have a little playmate.
21:31Ooh.
21:33I think maybe there's an opportunity that he's missed out on.
21:36I think it would be nice for him to have another dog that he could play with.
21:40Or even just, like, cuddle up with
21:41and just have, like, some sort of other dog communication
21:44rather than just sitting there waiting for me to give him some chicken.
21:48Bet you wouldn't consider a sweetie, would you?
21:52No, it's not steak.
21:54To see Willis as a dog, to see Willis having a good time,
21:59it's going to help us sort of take a step back as well, hopefully.
22:02Not be quite as overprotective
22:04because you can see that it's not necessary.
22:07Come on. I believe in you. You can do it.
22:10You can. You're braver than you think.
22:12We need to stare at the door together.
22:15Come on in. Up here.
22:18It's OK.
22:20Good girl.
22:22Oh, clever girly.
22:24Hey. Oh, good girl.
22:27You're being so brave.
22:28Come on, then. Who's waiting in here?
22:31Good girl. Well done.
22:33Oh, my God.
22:34Oh, my gosh.
22:37This is Willis.
22:40Come on in.
22:42Can you move?
22:43Come on in.
22:44Is it worse because this is on?
22:46OK.
22:47So, look, you're free.
22:49I'm nervous for Willis.
22:51You're free. Come on in.
22:58Come on.
22:58There's a good boy.
23:00Who's that, Laurie?
23:01There's a good boy.
23:03Good girl.
23:04What do you reckon?
23:06Good girl.
23:07Gentle.
23:08Good girl.
23:10Well done.
23:11Good girl.
23:12That's a good boy.
23:12Oh, look.
23:14Oh, look.
23:14This is so cute.
23:15It's like he's coming to say hello.
23:19Good girl.
23:20Gently with him.
23:23Good girl.
23:25That's nice.
23:26Oh, my God.
23:28Well done, Willis.
23:30Good job, boy.
23:32Good girl.
23:33Very gentle.
23:35Good girl.
23:36Well done.
23:38I think this is a really good start.
23:40Yeah, it's a better start than I actually anticipated.
23:42Yeah.
23:44For a dog like Willis, it takes a bit of work.
23:47It's not going to be love at first sight.
23:50It's going to be that slow burn-up blessing.
23:57Gentle.
23:59Good girl, Dory.
24:00Well done.
24:02Oh, that's nice.
24:03I think it's going brilliantly.
24:05Yeah.
24:06Eh?
24:13Good girl, Dory.
24:14Well, that was really nice with her.
24:16Yeah, very brave.
24:17With me, then.
24:18Yeah.
24:18She's braver than I thought she was going to be.
24:21She's always a little bit braver when she's got a doggy friend with her.
24:24That was the hope.
24:25Mm.
24:25We need to get Claire and Brett down now and see if she'll be brave in their presence.
24:32Exciting.
24:33It's very exciting.
24:33Can we go get through there?
24:34I think so, yeah.
24:35Oh, it's cold.
24:36She's adorable.
24:37She is really adorable.
24:39Good girl.
24:48If you want ears, you've got to go no further than a beagle.
24:51It's like the velvety-ness of a beagle here.
24:54So cute.
24:55They smell nice.
24:56Do you spend a lot of time smelling your dog?
24:58I do.
24:58I smell her head.
24:59I smell her ears.
25:00I get in between the gums.
25:03I...
25:03Spaniels have got quite soft mouths, obviously, to hold prey.
25:07It's nice and soft, lifted up.
25:13Who's the dog for?
25:15Don't know.
25:16Bit of both, I don't know.
25:17Bit of both?
25:17Yeah, we don't know.
25:18All right, who's the sensible one?
25:20Neither of us.
25:21Sorry.
25:22I'm the spoiler, I think.
25:24The spoiler?
25:25What are we talking?
25:26Cuddles.
25:28Tummy rubs.
25:29Treats.
25:30Treats.
25:30Have you ever looked up dog recipes?
25:32Yeah.
25:33Hoping to win a dog's heart through its stomach are Jill and her son Ryan.
25:38We could cook bone-shaped biscuits.
25:43We could call it woof treats.
25:45There you go.
25:47There's a...
25:47The world is opening up, my boy.
25:52I shan't be helping with that.
25:54That is a solo adventure.
25:56Ha ha!
25:59Ha ha!
26:01Ha ha!
26:03Ha ha ha!
26:05Have you done any prep?
26:07We've...
26:10Taken out the fishpond.
26:12Pardon?
26:13You've taken out a fishpond.
26:16Ryan thought I was mad, but I've just taken out the fishpond.
26:21Because we had...
26:25There's no sort of conversation before.
26:27Just wake up and you're like, what are you doing today?
26:30Getting rid of all the fish ponding on and just sat there thinking.
26:33And you just decided that? Yeah, off you go then.
26:35Well, it's safer, isn't it?
26:37What about you, Ryan? Have you...?
26:39Supervisor. Supervisor, yeah?
26:42Supervisor, yeah. Tears drinker, hot drinks.
26:44Mum, do you want a cuppa? Got to keep hydrated.
26:46It's an important job.
26:48Without a brew, I wouldn't have got through the day.
26:50Absolutely.
26:52You two do sound pretty close, are you?
26:54Yeah. Yeah, I think so, yeah.
26:56He always says, Mum, are you all right? I say, yeah, I'm all right.
26:58He said, if you're all right, I'm all right.
27:00Right, well, shall we get you sat down? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:03If you want to make yourself comfortable,
27:04someone will be going to have a chat with you soon.
27:06Thank you. Thank you.
27:07Of course.
27:13Here they are.
27:15Hello. Hello.
27:16Oh, how are you?
27:18Hello.
27:21Willis, I'm back.
27:24You'd forget who I was.
27:25Willis was enjoying where he was sitting.
27:26Yeah, were you enjoying saying hello?
27:28I might leave now.
27:30OK.
27:31Just about giving her some time and patience.
27:33Yeah.
27:34Just talking to her gently.
27:35She likes to lean on you.
27:37Yeah.
27:37As well, she takes comfort in that.
27:40Yeah.
27:40You be good, girl.
27:45Oh, where's she going?
27:46It's all right.
27:49It's all right.
27:50It's OK.
27:52You can come back to us.
27:56Come on.
27:58It's OK.
27:59It's OK.
28:00It's OK.
28:01It does.
28:02Yeah, there you go.
28:04It's good, isn't it?
28:06It's good.
28:09She's just clearly quite unsure.
28:12Natasha's a little bit stressed because she's panting, eh?
28:14Yeah.
28:15Hello.
28:17Hello.
28:23Why don't you come?
28:25Come over.
28:26All the dogs.
28:27Yeah.
28:27All the dogs, eh?
28:31Now Willis and Doreen know each other a little bit,
28:34maybe Doreen will see that, oh, Willis trusts these people,
28:38so maybe I can, too.
28:40Willis is going to lead the way on this one.
28:43Good boy.
28:47Good girl, Doreen.
28:55Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh.
28:58Is this good?
28:59That's really good.
29:00Good boy.
29:01Doreen, you're so adorable.
29:03Good stuff, guys.
29:05This is good.
29:06Yeah, calm.
29:08Calm.
29:09Everybody's calm.
29:12Everybody's calm.
29:13Oh.
29:15This is just lovely.
29:16I'm really happy with Willis.
29:20This is fun, isn't it?
29:24Yep.
29:26Good girl.
29:32She's leaning.
29:34Aw.
29:35Yeah.
29:36Look at Claire's face.
29:39Willis, you've been doing good, haven't you?
29:42I had Willis, and then I had her, and I was like, this is all going to work out.
29:45This is great.
29:47To see her going up, being so sweet and kind and respectful to him was really, really lovely.
29:52It offered us a chance to sort of take a step back, saying, actually, there's nothing really to be worried
29:55about here.
29:56Oh, she's sitting on me.
29:58And Willis is fine with it.
29:59That is so adorable.
30:02This is good.
30:03This is so good.
30:05Willis can get so much from Doreen, giving Willis a new lease on life.
30:10But Willis can actually give so much to her as well.
30:12She's going to grow your confidence.
30:14A reciprocal relationship like that is wonderful.
30:18You know, obviously, she's still got a lot of nervousness.
30:22Yeah, so I think a lot to think about.
30:29Such a handsome boy, aren't you?
30:31Yeah.
30:33Willis doing remarkably well.
30:35When you first arrived, you were skin and bone, weren't you?
30:38But look at you now.
30:39You're feeling out nicely.
30:41He's gained about two kilograms, and he's out of the danger zone.
30:46Yes, you're just such a resilient boy.
30:50True fighter.
30:52Coming around.
30:53Ready?
30:54Go.
30:56Yeah, you're much quicker than me, that's for sure.
31:03It's really, really great to see him enjoying life.
31:09He really loves having little zoomies.
31:14He will have a quick flight around, and then suddenly stop.
31:19Considering what he's been through, you would think it would take a while for him to trust.
31:24But it didn't take long for his personality to shine through at all.
31:28He's such a goofball.
31:30You just instantly fall in love with him.
31:35He just needs someone to be there for him, and someone that he could probably be there for too, because
31:41he has got so much love and care to give.
31:47We've had a little side bet as who the dog's going to go to first, whether it's him or me.
31:52Are you betting on yourself?
31:54I'm betting on me.
31:56He doesn't know that I've rubbed my hand in the pork chop before I came here.
32:00So I've just got to go like that and hope that the dog's not a vegan, haven't I?
32:04There's just always food going on at the moment.
32:07Oh, OK.
32:08Oh, I'm a feeder.
32:12Put on a bit of timber since I've moved home.
32:16Put on a bit of timber?
32:17Yeah.
32:18I mean, it's a nice way, isn't it, so I haven't got fat.
32:21I can't help it.
32:2315 kilos of rice for two of us, but hey-ho, the birds love it.
32:28So we've got the fattest pigeons in Somerset.
32:32To give us a ballpark, what sort of size of dog were you thinking?
32:36Sort of want a big dog.
32:37A big dog with a big bit of personality.
32:40You want a cheeky one, don't you?
32:42Yeah.
32:43So do you live together?
32:44Yeah.
32:45Yeah.
32:46I was living by myself, but I had an injury, fall from a bridge, and just had no mobility.
32:57I'm so sorry.
32:58That sounds awful.
33:02I've never been so frightened in my life.
33:05I slept at the hospital that night.
33:08And the next day, they took me up to ICU.
33:12I sat and watched him for ten days on a breathing apparatus.
33:19Waiting and waiting and waiting.
33:22They kept telling me that the more I talked to him, that if he could hear, that I would get
33:28a sign.
33:30And I got a sign, and he squeezed my hand.
33:34And I screamed and shouted, and everybody came in.
33:38And from that day, we made slow progress.
33:44Life is going to be different, but I'm certainly not as bad as what I was.
33:50So now we're getting to the stage of what I would call normal life, I suppose.
33:56Getting out and pottering about.
33:59And this is why we think that the dog will help.
34:05There is a purpose to getting physical out and about.
34:10You know, no matter how badly they're treated, once a dog trusts somebody, all they do is just, you know,
34:17want companionship and love.
34:18And it's just such a wholesome, nice thing.
34:22I think it'll only be beneficial for my health.
34:25Hmm.
34:26And I think I could give a dog a loving, warm home.
34:30And emphasise the warm, because heating's always on.
34:34Shall we crack on?
34:35Yeah.
34:36And we'll come back and have a chat.
34:37Perfect.
34:38All right.
34:38All right.
34:39See you in a minute.
34:43When I was talking to them, one dog did come to mind.
34:47Floyd.
34:48Oh!
34:50Because it's very rare that we have someone come in that would like a big dog, but doesn't mind about
34:55breed.
34:55And I think he needs to feed off that resilience from a dog and get that positivity.
35:00And Floyd just exudes positivity, doesn't he?
35:04Not to mention, mum's cooking.
35:08Might be able to fatten him up a bit.
35:10We'll fatten him up in no time.
35:11Yeah.
35:11That's what he needs.
35:13Hello.
35:15You ready?
35:16We're going to go this way.
35:18Come on in.
35:20Floyd.
35:21That's exciting.
35:23I'm saying.
35:28A lurcher, Ryan.
35:29How does that sound?
35:31Sounds right, I think, doesn't it?
35:32Yeah.
35:33Like the sound of that?
35:34Yeah.
35:37I sort of don't remember the worst bit, I suppose.
35:42I was out of it for two to three weeks.
35:46We've always said we've got so much love to give.
35:50Yeah, exactly.
35:51Yeah.
35:54When I first broke up, they were putting plaster on my ankle, and I thought, I broke my ankle.
36:01So I thought, about six to eight weeks, I'll be all right.
36:04You all right?
36:05Yeah.
36:06He didn't understand the severity of his injuries.
36:11He had a broken back, a broken pelvis, and he had a 12% chance of survival.
36:23You know, life is different now.
36:29When I first left hospital, I couldn't really stand or couldn't really do anything.
36:34Right.
36:36All right.
36:37Ready?
36:38Yeah.
36:39Now we're at a stage where I've managed to do a little bit of walking.
36:46I'm going for the treat.
36:50Do you want a couple?
36:51Nah.
36:52I ain't bribing him straight away.
36:54I've got to win this bet.
36:56It's very easy to sort of sit, exist, and dwell on the past.
37:01You know, back's playing up, legs playing up.
37:05There's no point in getting up today.
37:07Do you want to ball?
37:08No.
37:09Oh, you're going straight, are you?
37:13I think I need a little nudge from a dog.
37:16Dogs have an internal clock, I'm certain of it.
37:19So, 7 o'clock, 8 o'clock, whenever breakfast is, the dog will run the show from then.
37:25I'm going to meet some nice people now.
37:28I'm getting lots of treats.
37:30It's certainly good for you, though.
37:32It's your purpose, doesn't it?
37:33Yeah, yeah.
37:35This way.
37:37Good boy.
37:39He's so brave.
37:47Hiya.
37:47Hello.
37:48You guys all right?
37:49Yeah, good, thank you.
37:50You and Tiffany.
37:51Hi, Tiffany.
37:52And this is the wonderful Floyd.
37:54Aw.
37:54He looks very skinny.
37:56He is.
37:57He's putting on weight, though.
37:58He's doing well.
37:59Hey.
37:59That's all right.
37:59But I'll leave you guys with his.
38:01Yeah, enjoy.
38:02Hello.
38:03Hello, darling.
38:05Hello.
38:07Hello.
38:07I think he'll come to you first, don't he?
38:08There we go.
38:10Oh, that was kind of both.
38:12Maybe more Jill.
38:13I think Jill won the bet.
38:15Floyd.
38:23He found the treats.
38:25Leave the biscuits alone.
38:27Oh.
38:28Oh.
38:29Oh, God.
38:32Oh, you menace.
38:35Oh, dear.
38:38It's like a hoover.
38:39Two dinners today, mate.
38:41You're a lucky boy.
38:43They said they wanted a cheeky dog.
38:45He's definitely seen his cheeky and mischievous side.
38:47Floyd.
38:48Here, darling.
38:51What's this?
38:52What's this?
38:55Good boy.
38:57Good boy.
38:59Oh, look, he's already building that bond with her.
39:01When she called him, he came over.
39:04Good boy.
39:06Oh, lovely cuddles.
39:10What have we got?
39:12What have we got?
39:16Ryan's not really taking part as of yet, is he?
39:20I mean, it's a bit harder, isn't it, for Ryan to sort of get up and move around
39:24and crouch down to the floor and bend over, so I wonder if he's just trying to wait for
39:29the right time.
39:34He's going to strike back over there.
39:36Floyd.
39:38Floyd.
39:41Good boy.
39:43Good boy.
40:02I'm immensely proud of Ryan.
40:05He's come a long way in seven months.
40:08A very long way.
40:14His body's come through a lot.
40:16His mind's come through a lot.
40:19Having a new furry friend will help Ryan, you know, build up the strength.
40:51You're on the tree.
40:53You have to go and see Ryan.
40:55Come on, then.
40:56Come on.
40:57He's going to see Ryan.
40:59Come on, then.
41:00I think Jill can sense that Ryan's a bit left out.
41:05Come on, then.
41:08Come on, then.
41:11She's trying to find a connection between Floyd and Ryan, isn't she?
41:16Floyd.
41:17Come on, then.
41:21Floyd.
41:22Come on, then.
41:22Good boy.
41:26Good boy.
41:29Good boy.
41:30Is that nice?
41:33Oh, tubby rubber.
41:35Hey.
41:36Come on, Floyd.
41:42You don't need to be scared of us.
41:53Oh, he's smiling.
41:56Yeah.
41:57Ryan's smiling.
41:58You want some of Nanny Jill's cooking.
42:01He's sniffing in your pocket.
42:09What's this?
42:12What's this?
42:12Yeah, yeah.
42:14Yeah.
42:15Oh.
42:15Oh.
42:17Is that fun?
42:20I mean, you cannot have a smile on your face when you see a lurch doing that.
42:23Oh, well done, Ryan.
42:27I just wanted a little cheeky chappy, and I think I found that in him.
42:33Oh, that was like, come on.
42:36Yeah, you know I've got them.
42:41I can hear the happiness.
42:43I can hear it in his voice.
42:48I'm hoping one day I'm not Ryan the man with a stick.
42:53I'm hoping I'm Ryan with Floyd, I suppose.
42:59I'm going to help Uncle Ryan out.
43:01You fancy living in Somerset?
43:11Maple!
43:13My life!
43:15When we met them, it was just magical, and it was meant to be.
43:19Hello, my boy.
43:20Yes?
43:22Drop.
43:22Drop.
43:23Oh, good girl.
43:24Right, sit.
43:25They've just fitted in so well.
43:27They're so good with the kids.
43:30Hello!
43:34We go in the garden, play ball with Mabel.
43:37Milo's out there playing ball as well.
43:38Yeah, they're very, very fun.
43:40Good boy.
43:41Go!
43:44They do bring you joy, which is the main thing that I think we needed.
43:50And they've done that.
43:52Go!
43:55Since having Milo and Mabel, my husband and I have decided to get back together.
44:07Having us all together as one is the best thing ever.
44:19Hey, Willis.
44:21Have a nice day in the park, eh, buddy?
44:24Yeah?
44:25Seeing Dory having the connection with Willis and with Claire, you could see what it could
44:31become.
44:32So it was a no-brainer from the outset.
44:41We renamed her Goldie.
44:44When we brought her home, she was very scared.
44:47But she's grown in confidence day by day, and I think that's helped by Willis.
44:54She's seen that Willis interacts with us and, like, how fun that is.
44:58And so, therefore, she wants to be part of the action.
45:02Good girl, hey?
45:03Good girl.
45:05There she is.
45:07Willis has shown her that people are good.
45:09Good girl.
45:10Well done, Goldie.
45:12It makes me feel really happy, like, to see Willis a little bit more doggy.
45:17We can see Willis can be a dog without us being overprotective.
45:21That's been wonderful to see.
45:29You ready?
45:32Jill and Ryan did take Floyd home.
45:34Unfortunately, they've been dealing with her a lot recently.
45:37So Jill made a difficult decision to bring him back.
45:41Jill and Ryan have done a fantastic job with Floyd.
