Seven stolen dogs escape slaughterhouse and return home to China

Seven dogs stolen from a village in northeastern China have captivated millions online after they escaped thieves who had mistaken them for a dog meat restaurant and returned home together, fueling calls for stricter animal welfare laws. On March 16, a user named Lu captured the seven animals on his phone as they walked along a busy thoroughfare in Changchun, Jilin Province. The video shows the group carefully surrounding an injured German Shepherd, while a Corgi in the lead repeatedly turns to ensure no one is left behind. The group also included a Golden Retriever, a Labrador, and a Pekingese. According to a testimony collected by Dahe Daily and subsequently reprinted by numerous online publications, the dogs come from the same village, where they typically roam freely in packs and have formed strong bonds with one another. Despite Lu's attempts to lead them to safety, the animals did not respond to his calls; the video was then uploaded to Douyin to prompt the intervention of local authorities. Another passerby filmed the dogs as they crossed nearby fields. Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base, a local organization that cares for stray dogs, mobilized volunteers and even a drone to follow the group and ensure their safe return. Volunteers also reported that the dogs were stolen by people running a dog meat restaurant and may have escaped from a truck; however, there were no direct witnesses to the escape. Video:
