18:15HOW HAVE I ENJOYED MY FIRST DAY AS A ROAD WARRIOR?
18:19I'M NOT A ROAD WARRIOR.
18:21I JUST BEEN SAT WITH JAY IN A WAGON, RECOVERING A TRUCK.

19:05GOT A GUY MARCHING WASHING MY TRUCK FOR ME, LIKE, YEAH.
19:10generally what a bloke you wouldn't normally get guy don't see himself as a celebrity does he
19:15but end of the day he is you won't get any other celebrity ivy's on
19:19hands covered in oil cracking on washing your truck and doing it right
19:28and after washing comes the refueling
19:32what eight to the gallon just around about eight at the best what are the words yes
19:38uh we could be down to around about four and a half to five four and a half to five
19:41to the gallon
19:42and your normal cars doing what 30 or 40 to the gallon yeah yeah 800 quid to fill it
19:48around about there yeah expensive job
19:59right yeah so um here we are work a late shift
20:03yeah they give you your own digs to stay in come and have a look at this
20:08this is going to take some beating
20:13here we are number one here we are the king have a look at this have a look at this
20:21hey fridge

20:32trucker's toothbrush when in rome
20:43fantastic oh hang on i can turn that on care i can turn that on
20:49i love it i love it you you know me i love learning new things hey i i won't i
20:56won't be very quick
20:58i don't know maybe i won't be the most efficient but if i had to go do it now i'm
21:00sure i could do it
21:02i might make a mess but i could do it can't wait for tomorrow genuinely do not know what's going
21:06to
21:06happen hopefully we have something interesting something's a bit exciting you know just go right
21:14i'll get my head down thank you very much not that i'm asking for a multiple pile up or anything
21:29guys back on shift at the recovery yard and facing one of the challenges of an unpredictable job
21:37keeping yourself busy in between shouts
21:42go on do you want me to get the shovel out boy i think there's an out to sweeping
21:45clothes what do you think i'm not good at much but i'm all right at sweeping up
21:49just out that door left hand side
21:51sound job but it doesn't take long for someone to send up a distress flare yeah yeah yeah yeah
21:59send that one down mate we'll get get set off straight away cheers max thank you
22:02go on boy what's the plan glory recovery mate one in birmingham all right that's us then that's
22:06awesome we'll get cracking we'll crack on sound job boy sound job right yeah i'll take off it's
22:10not gonna piss it down is it i just think how much i'll take off take the jacket off i've
22:14got my
22:15bloody winter gear on the boys leap immediately into action i'll have a cheese on if you don't
22:22mind you yeah that'll do mate that looks like it's got pickle that more you yeah that'll do me
22:25yeah hey i'm not a fussy man boy
22:37with the job about one hour away there's plenty of time for chat as well as fine dining and what
22:45do these two alpha nights of the road discuss
22:51holidays yeah we've been been on cruises for the last few years
22:55and that's conveyed to me that that's honestly i wouldn't have thought it would be me you know
22:58being stuck on that boat honestly i can't knock it till i've tried it but yeah i'd have said that's
23:02not for me no go on yeah can you know because you think i'm stuck on this thing there's nothing
23:05to
23:05do with the same folk yeah same folk yeah but two and a half thousand staff or something there
23:11five thousand people on this ship you don't see the same person twice in a fortnight yeah honestly
23:16yeah yeah and i've been to cities that i wouldn't have thought are going to so like where
23:21uh well barcelona because there's that much to do and see around barcelona yeah yeah
23:25all right i'd never say never then that my missus ain't a big flyer yeah but hey we're
23:29eyes and ears open to different yeah yeah yeah
23:37what are you doing here you just come wrong side island didn't you just come wrong side island
23:42here yeah yeah we're on here somewhere you reckon yeah we're looking for electric avenue 18 tonne
23:49rigid mate on this lane some ah i can see something down there with some ads flashing it's normally a
23:55good
23:55sign yeah all right so i'll go to that locker get my eyes out then yes mate yeah yeah you
24:00need your
24:02man look you've got his thumb up for us oh man we've got parked cars behind him mate so we're
24:07going to
24:07be going for a front yeah yeah yeah jay's happy for guy to take the lead on this lift and
24:14shift
24:17our hero starts his inquiries how you getting on mate with the driver of the broken down truck
24:22will she drive mate sorry will she move no she won't mate what's happened mate uh coming along here
24:29yeah got the faults up come up on the dash yeah orange lights red lights uh red lights lost all
24:35drive
24:36did you literally lost all drive just glided into here uh i had a mechanic come out yes had a
24:43look at
24:43it funny he's gone the faults he got 49 faults so with a few issues then so uh i think
24:49the only
24:49thing that's working at the minute is the tachograph and the radio okay now sound job mate right
24:55we've got a plan yeah all right jay powertrain module issue it sounds like an engine right so yeah that's
25:02not roadside repair though yeah by the sound of it he was here for an hour mucking about come get
25:06to the
25:06bottom of it right so it may only be day three but our guy reckons he's got the
25:13hang of this so tied up to you what you want to do on this sit there flicker onto your
25:17remote
25:17obviously you want to be down there underneath see what you're doing now the golden rule is damage
25:21free recovery now green button power up so the challenge here is hitching a real customer's
25:29truck up without accidentally punching a hole through its floor boom down a bit you think boom
25:39down mate yeah and you're about level of that that's it extend out at that boom up boom up
25:51nope to catch there is it that no that told me that you happy
25:58perfect like that blimey he's done it
26:03yeah back up over your axle on the outside of the axle yeah so you've got the other side
26:08of the spring hanger now yeah then you'll have a hook on each side yeah i have yeah
26:11chaining your right chain gone to your left that's making yeah a little bit more sense now boy
26:17only a little bit though only a little bit now guy has to make the vehicle safe to tow
26:25which is a test for his mechanical instincts four bolts in it yeah ideally then half shaft
26:31i'd pass the half shaft it mate yeah removing the half shaft will prevent a lot of damage
26:38taking the half shaft out when the truck's been towed we want to stop the gearbox from turning
26:42to turn the gearbox without the engine running the oil pump's not working it'll seize the gearbox up
26:50so we catch all this oil in this so we're just making sure from an environmental point of view
26:54we're not causing any problems i'll put my rag right back and i'll rotate it so you're pushing
26:58the rag onto the back just so you're wiping it that's it because then when you pull it out you're
27:03not dripping all of it floor yeah so you don't back at shaft now they'll love this on telly
27:08what wipe your shaft guy nobody likes a dripping shaft no we do not man no we do not
27:15there's only one set of splines on this yeah yeah yeah sling them bolts in there put them in
27:20there look keep them up everything all neat and tidy together one obviously we don't want to be
27:26putting them in a customer's vehicle dirty bolts of that no we don't you know what diff oil could
27:31smell like to be honest i quite like a bit of ep90 the half shaft gets stored in a special
27:38hidey hole
27:39mate that's tired of that and then the pavement gets a spring clean
27:45a bit of break clean a lot mate mate mate you know just where we made a bit of a
27:48mess
27:48mate you know the score there's one last check to make sure guy is properly on the ball
27:56you're chained on you got your earring yeah shaft's out we just need one more thing doing back lights
28:03back lights on mate yeah and he nails it now can't come off all that remains is to say goodbye
28:12to a
28:12grateful driver exactly that exactly that mate yeah nice to meet you i've known he was coming over to
28:20watch a lorry in this world our guy is bigger than beyonce which does hold the job up a bit
28:28are you all good yeah you killed it good lad no cheers mate thank you see you later mate cheers
28:36mate
28:36good job jay always keeps his mind on the job i've just realized guy before we've set off mate we've
28:41got
28:41seven and a half ton weight limit straight in front yeah dead end street seven and a half ton weight
28:46limit
28:46so we're going to have to turn this around here before we carry on
28:56no listen easy i'll get on his i'll get on his side
29:17cheers mate thank you
29:24tidy work there mate we're good tidy work mate tidy work thank you
29:33it didn't take long did it no no the recovery is a success but the job's not over
29:40when you're driving a load this big and cumbersome you can't switch off for a second
29:45it's on the way in we had a 15-foot bridge didn't we yes we did yes it was no
29:49good then turning this
29:50around and it being 16 16 foot tall so you've had to take that into account when i was in
29:56earlier
29:56yeah to check the handbrake i had a quick clock at the height marker in it you see yeah yeah
30:00yeah
30:01what you've got to take into account is it's marked up at 14 plus what you've lifted what we've lifted
30:06it yes i know for a fact 15 foot here we're absolutely fine go on do you want me to
30:11watch
30:11here you have a time no stress no stress right okay and we're 15 you're right okay okay i like
30:18your confidence you watch your mirrors here look watching your mirrors i like your confidence
30:21yeah you look how much you've got there
30:28oh yeah you swing a cat in there yeah hey boy hey boy that's the experience in it fair play
30:34to you
30:36that's what's happening out on the open road there's chance to evaluate how well the job went
30:40and in particular acknowledge guy's customer service skills approaching the driver and talking like
30:48he did well from my eyes i think it's paramount yeah he'd been sat there six hours no wonder he
30:53was
30:53pleased that we've got there we get people that haven't been in that situation scenario before
30:59so they are slightly worried they're panicking because they're out of the elements they don't
31:04know what's happening so you have to almost comfort them a bit in that we're doing this on a daily
31:09basis it's the norm to us it's joe public side of the road broke down could potentially the first
31:14time they've ever been in that scenario yeah you're making their terrible day it's that little bit more
31:19bearable you are just by just putting the mine at rest yeah we do we do get a bit of
31:24a buzz when you
31:26effectively job satisfaction yeah hey boy that's worth a lot yeah that's worth a lot
31:37the lads reach the repair yard and get ready to unload just obviously ends be carefully obviously
31:44on a live industrial estate yeah you're right yeah
31:52no mess in here what's on that what's on sad no input in dropping that off it done it by
31:57his own
31:58accord yeah there were no jerky movements with it or anything blowing it down nice plenty of
32:02clearance underneath the vehicle so spot on that all right to fold up folder up mate yeah
32:12that spot on that mate yeah job done job done um i'm learning i'm sort of i'm slowly getting there
32:18but having a word with the lads in there i says go on it's got this fault what do you
32:21think that'll be
32:21he said that could be a solenoid inside the box or it could be a wheel speed sensor i'd just
32:25be
32:25interested to see what that was just talking to the apprentice there just started he didn't have
32:28a clue but he's into it he's only been he's only been here a few months it's been another job
32:33well done
32:34and our guy is fitting into this world rather well i can't fault the chap literally yeah if i'd say
32:41if we was doing it at after a 10 it'd be well probably eight out of ten it's called it's
32:46calm
32:46his collective which is what you want you don't you don't want anybody that's flapping on a job like
32:51this exactly i'll go put them back thank you thank you cheers mate once they've tied it up guy and
32:56jay
32:56seize the opportunity for a lunch break and manage to get a table for two on the back of a
33:02skip lorry
33:05that's the sort of normal thing isn't it office jobs one hour dinner breaks yeah that's not the
33:13norm in this job is not the norm at all right no definitely we don't get an hour dinner break
33:17now definitely not we'll have breaks to keep us legal yeah but as you can well imagine with the
33:21industry that we're in we we we are on it yeah as such yeah yeah if we get the police
33:27ringing us all
33:28roads closed we've got to open this road as quick as possible we're not going to tell them
33:33we'll be with you in 45 minutes we're just having a dinner break it ain't going to wash is it
33:37so
33:40waiting for the phone to go then yes yeah right yeah
33:58guys final day as a recovery operator will see him tested with the job's biggest challenge
34:06a truck rollover the goal was at the start of the recovery job was can i man a juicy scenario
34:15right can i control that situation well what we're going to do we're going to make our own
34:19juicy situation we're going to roll the truck over and can i write it i think i've got the general
34:25gist of what needs to happen hopefully there's 101 things that could go wrong it could fall over
34:35on someone crush a load of puppies it's just that there's loads of things could happen loads of
34:40things could happen but we try not to think about those the power of positive non-thinking
34:48it's as complex as recovery gets involving two of the company's biggest cranes and lifting specialists
34:55steve and pat guy will have to use all the knowledge he's learned this week and a bit more
35:03this is what we get up for on here yeah something to go and get your teeth stuck into like
35:09but first they have to make the truck have an accident and they've got just the man for the job
35:15go on give it a bit keep it going keep it going all right send it
35:27just like that that just like that
35:34i think we've achieved putting it on its side steve is an instructor with the institute of vehicle
35:40recovery and gives guy a crash course in the physics behind this rescue yeah and we're saying
35:46it's what 20 we're saying 20 tonne let's just use 20 tonne as a figure sometimes i think people think
35:52we just turn up we just attach a winch to it and pull and just hope for the best work
35:58out where the
35:59center of gravity would be multiplied by the distance of your pivot point which is the bottom
36:03of your wheels yeah the reality is quite often there's a lot of sort of physics involved and
36:09trying to use things to get the best mechanical advantage and make the job a lot easier for yourself
36:13and we're going to run out of panels on that trailer i've tried i've tried right here and i've
36:17cocked it up a couple of times but i think now you've explained it i've sort of got the general
36:21gist
36:25the team start rigging for the lift by jacking the trailer up on airbags so it's easier to pull the
36:31winch cables underneath
36:35yeah same light guy ties them securely around the axles hopefully while the cranes are maneuvering to
36:51position a set of winch controls are handed over to the newbie
36:56sound job but we've not told him this but there's nearly one and a half million pounds worth of kit
37:02that he's operating there so yeah there's a lot of pressure on his shoulders not to mess this up
37:07go on what's the score you just gotta look what you're doing all the time yeah yeah like don't
37:12push your lever unless you can see what it's going to do yeah that's that's it really like and then
37:17you can't up yeah come on more inflatables support the trailer as it's lifted while on the other side
37:26crash bags will cushion the fall but it's a windy day so they need to be held in place by
37:32hand
37:33more pressure for guy if i didn't trust him i wouldn't have had him on it you kind of have
37:38to
37:38have two guys in in the danger zone if you like so if you don't trust the people that controls
37:43the other
37:44side then it's no good time to winch if you winch up now yeah pat's controlling the crane on the
37:57left
37:59and guys controlling the crane on the right
38:03oh yeah it's a bit quicker at that isn't it the need to lift perfectly in sync
38:09right hold it there i'll catch up
38:15yeah 1.6 tonne 1.7 tonne 1.8 tonne in with the blue a bit learning on the job
38:24yeah you're right you're right so you reckon that's on the point of going 1.6 tonne yeah yeah
38:29we'll just send it
38:37good job well done mate you know the score are you
38:42to be fair from what guys from where we were at the beginning of the week to where we are
38:46now that
38:46our lads wouldn't even be at this stage now
38:51none of these boys are university graduates
38:56but they can make amazing things happen just by using common sense and now they've got a
39:02trustworthy extra set of hands the team decide to ramp things up by experimenting with a new
39:08technique for the very first time sometimes on a motorway they're they're pushing you and pushing
39:15you and pushing you to keep lanes open and stuff like that so this so what we want to show
39:19is is
39:19possibly you might be able to do this in in two lanes with my way rather than three
39:26well you've never tried this no no
39:29by using three wreckers they think they can write the truck under control in mid-air
39:39you ready yep
39:45a successful lift depends on constant communication
39:48in with the white to ensure nothing gets out of hand
39:57is that not getting a bit near your wagons yeah that's all right
40:00if that wind got into that i'd do some damage that's the side of your motor
40:04oh you're all right it's coming up now it's finding its center isn't it
40:07i think it was just settling then yeah it was just settling
40:13inch by inch they rotate the truck come out a touch jay out with a blue
40:21i guess i what do we do next you're ready you've got it be ready yeah go on in with
40:25a white
40:27if the fan i had to do something as quick mate i'll be knackered
40:32the truck is now the right way around it means a motorway lane alongside could stay open
40:39which means this law have just created a revolution in recovery
40:4599.9 of the population would not have a clue where to start doing that would they
40:52If we all lower down together now, I reckon.
40:53Yeah. Both down together.
40:57Give yourself a bit of credit, boys. What an amazing achievement.
41:01That's absolutely beautiful, that is. Happy?
41:03Very happy. That's awesome.
41:06I mean, I'm happy I didn't knack her out, which usually happens.
41:08So, thank you very much. No problem.
41:11Maybe he understood those physics after all.
41:14In any case, it's time to head back to the yard for the final time.
41:18And Jay has a treat lined up.
41:22Keys, innit?
41:23It's what? Keys are in it.
41:25F***ing hell.
41:27I'll have a go.
41:29It's the biggest gesture a truckie can make.
41:33Yeah, a guy of mine's the first person to have drove that truck apart from me, so, yeah.
41:39I'll just be steady away in this fire. I'll be bloody nervous.
41:41Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
41:45I'll grow all the faith in you.
41:48I'll take it, break it, and I'll break your legs.
41:57One of the best weeks I've ever had. Without a shadow of a day.
42:01A week of priming a truck tomorrow, I think.
42:04Hey, boy, boy, boy, I've learnt a load driving watching you.
42:07Really?
42:08Magic.
42:08Magic.
42:09Yeah.
42:10I grew up with me dad.
42:11Was he a dab hand?
42:12Oh, mate, honestly. One thing I'd say about me dad, he can drink and he can drive.
42:17Yeah.
42:17This is a very practical job for definitely practical people. It's puzzles and problem-solving with Tonka Toys.
42:32Is that Danny B?
42:33That's Danny B.
42:38Could I do it?
42:39Would I do it?
42:40I love it.
42:42But I'd love it more if I was seeing the job through and fixing the problem. You know what I
42:46mean? We're dropping the problem off at a workshop for them to fix. Well, that's sort of what I want
42:49to do. That's what I want to do.
42:52Can I have a phone number, buddy?
42:53Of course you can, yeah, yeah.
42:54Go on.
42:5507.
42:55Yeah.
42:56There you go.
42:57There we go.
42:58Well, I've loved it. Thanks very much.
43:00No, more than welcome, mate. And you're welcome back any time as well.
43:03Yeah?
43:03Yeah, yeah.
43:05It's definitely food for thought. They've said, if I want to come back, there's a job going. You know what
43:09I mean? I'm a bit of holiday relief. I'd be here like a shot. No question.
43:14Right, I've got your present. You've had me stinking your cab out for a few days, boy.
43:22Yeah.
43:23Right.
43:24Absolute pleasure, mate.
43:25You are the man.
43:25You are the man.
43:26Thanks a lot.
43:27You are the man, Bob.
43:28Thank you very much.
43:29Yeah, lovely.
43:29Right, I'll have a look back at Grimsby, mate. That weather's coming, I think, innit?
44:02You are the man.
44:02Yeah, we'll be right back.
