00:09Now joining me here in the studio I've got Dennis and Rich from Namco Bandai Games and we're checking out
00:15Soul Calibur 5. Gentlemen, welcome to the stage. Thank you. Great to have you guys here. Comic-Con, how's it
00:22been going for you guys so far? Comic-Con's been good. It's been really busy. There's a lot of people
00:26out here. Yeah, lots of folks. You guys got some PlayStation's
00:29stations to play at, to clarify, out on the show floor. But you brought in your massive arcade stick and
00:37Soul Calibur 5 here. That's what we're talking about today. We're going to get some fighting going shortly. But give
00:41us the, you know, Soul Calibur, obviously a venerable fighting franchise. What's up with Soul Calibur 5? So Soul Calibur
00:485, you know, the latest version of Soul Calibur. You know, one of the coolest things about Soul Calibur 5
00:54is the game takes place 17 years after the events of Soul Calibur 4. That's a pretty big gap.
00:59It's a big gap. It's a big gap. So with that, you know, a lot of characters, they've changed over
01:03time. You know, there's going to be a lot of introduction of new characters. Okay. So it changes, it changes
01:09a lot in the game. All right, cool. So young people becoming old, old people becoming robots, that kind of
01:15stuff.
01:16All right. Well, let's, let's fire the game up here, Rich. Let's jump into a match. And we're going to
01:21show off, you guys got a couple characters here. Who are we going to be seeing starting things off?
01:26So first off, we'll be showing off of Patroklos and Mitsurugi. And so Patroklos is one of the new characters
01:33for the Soul Calibur 5.
01:35And Patroklos is the son of Sophicia. A Soul Calibur veteran of many years.
01:40Yes, yes. And so he is the new hero for the title, for the game.
01:44Okay.
01:44So the story mode is going to follow mainly him and his adventures throughout.
01:50So you're going to see he uses the short sword and the shield.
01:54Just like Mama used to do.
01:55Just like Mama used to do.
01:57And so from a gameplay standpoint, you know, some of the stuff we're going to show you here for the
02:01first time showing, you know, actual uninterrupted gameplay is a little bit about the fighting system.
02:05So one thing you'll see here is there's something called the quick step.
02:09So a quick step is something you'll see when he, when Rich double taps, he's going to do a quick
02:15turn in 3D.
02:16Okay.
02:16So this allows you to easily evade attacks and also get around to the side of your opponent to be
02:21able to counterattack.
02:22Okay.
02:23Yeah, that seems like pretty, makes you pretty nimble.
02:26Yeah.
02:26And this, I mean, especially when you're talking about battling in that three-dimensional arena, you know, you need, you
02:32want to be able to get around and get to the black, the backside and whatnot like that.
02:36Okay.
02:36So that's the quick step.
02:38So that's the quick step.
02:38Yes.
02:39So, and then some of the other things that we have, so there's a, there's a new, there's new attack
02:45systems called the, the Brave Edge and the Critical Edge.
02:47So the Brave Edge is something that allows you to take certain moves from characters and then it'll either power
02:55them up.
02:56So they'll do more damage or it will decrease the, the, the reaction time to them so that you can
03:02use them in combos more so than other moves.
03:05Or there'll be certain attacks that are so powerful that they'll just break your opponent's guard immediately.
03:09Okay.
03:10So Brave Edge, I mean, so put that in context.
03:13Did we just see, are you going to use the Brave Edge?
03:15Then there was some, like, the shield bash.
03:17Yep.
03:17So you're going to see, well, we're going to show you, we're going to show you the basic moves and
03:20how the transition is from the basic moves to the Brave Edge version.
03:24All right.
03:24So you're going to see a basic, uh, kind of the shield bash right there.
03:28Yeah.
03:28And then right here, we're going to show you how the Brave Edge is going to work.
03:31So the added hit.
03:33Okay.
03:34Yeah.
03:34So it's, it's a quick follow-up to, to that attack?
03:36It's a quick follow-up.
03:37I mean, the properties of the moves are going to change just a little bit.
03:40So it will work at your advantage.
03:42And there's also a little bit that gets taken away from the bar that you do have.
03:46So you're not going to be able to spam this out all the time and you've got to have a
03:49good amount of bar management.
03:51So what you, the bar you're talking about is that little curved bar around the number in the top left.
03:56Yep.
03:56Or top right.
03:57As it works.
03:57Uh, now it's, so I see Mitsurugi is maxed out here.
04:01That's the CPU player.
04:02Yes.
04:02Uh, you're at, so you don't want to take one.
04:05Is that you sort of bank them and that allows you like one Brave Edge attack.
04:09Yep.
04:10Uh, well.
04:11A Brave Edge attack actually comes in the portions.
04:13So for every one full bar that you have, in this game you can accumulate two full bars.
04:18Okay.
04:18You'll be able to start the fight with two full bars.
04:19You'll be able to do four Brave Edge attacks.
04:22All right.
04:22So this can all be combined together if you want to do one long string of combos.
04:26or you can actually put this in with anything else that you want.
04:30So you can launch them, so you can do a basic, it's definitely an accessory to building up
04:35your combos.
04:36Yeah.
04:36But you have, you can't just spam it the whole time.
04:39You really want to go ahead and...
04:40It's a limited resource.
04:41It's a limited resource and you're going to be playing for the amount of rounds that you're
04:44going to be going off.
04:45So your strategy is going to be a little bit different, but it's, it's one really big thing
04:49that's going to be in this game.
04:50Okay.
04:50So that's the Brave Edge.
04:51That's the Brave Edge.
04:52So next is, oh, yeah.
04:53Next is the Critical Edge.
04:55So Critical Edge is a, um, flashy kind of super-finish move.
05:00Exactly.
05:01So, um, so that takes a full bar.
05:03Next time.
05:04Yes.
05:05So, um, that takes a full bar of your leader.
05:07And, um, so that, those attacks do a lot of damage.
05:10They're really flashy.
05:12They're really cool.
05:13Um, of course Mitsurigo's already defeated there.
05:15So that one didn't quite hit him, but, um, so...
05:18But, yeah, so you, it snaps into sort of those dramatic camera angles, and once you, like,
05:22once you start landing a Critical Edge attack, your opponent can only just wait and, like,
05:27hope until it ends to you.
05:29And that's...
05:30And now what...
05:31It also gives you a great view of what, uh, that, like, pelt that's over Patroclus' shoulder.
05:38Shoulder.
05:38Yes.
05:39What is that?
05:39Like a little thing?
05:40It's like a little meat, you know?
05:42He's a warrior.
05:43He's a warrior.
05:44You need it.
05:44He's a warrior.
05:47He's a warrior.
05:49Yeah.
05:49He's a warrior.
05:51Yes.
05:52So, um, so, every character has, um, one unique, um, Critical Edge attack.
05:57And so, um, and those attacks are, they're kind of similar to the Critical Finish that was
06:02in SoCal before.
06:04Okay.
06:04Um, so, but the properties have changed a bit.
06:06Um, uh, mainly it's, um, how, how, and when you can execute them.
06:09Fans, they really liked executing and seeing those critical finishes,
06:13but because it was basically a one round instant win, you didn't get to see it very often.
06:19Plus it was actually kind of hard to do.
06:21You had to break off the opponent's armor and then you had to put in the input for it.
06:27And again, you couldn't see it all that often and novice players, you know, really didn't get to see it
06:32at all, you know, really.
06:33So this is a way that, you know, players and fans can really kind of check out all the really
06:39cool moves
06:41and be able to, you know, execute them, you know, multiple times in a match.
06:44Nice. Yeah, I mean, you know, for someone coming into a fighting game, you know,
06:48if you're not familiar with Soul Calibur systems or maybe not an ace fighting game player,
06:53you want to see all those awesome moves, but it can take a lot of practice to get there.
06:57Exactly.
06:58So you make it a little more accessible, a little easier to do.
07:02So you mentioned that previously the critical finish, you needed to weaken the opponent by knocking off their armor.
07:08Yes.
07:08Do you have similar mechanics in this game about, like, degrading armor and stuff like that over the course of
07:14the fight?
07:15So the development team right now is working.
07:18They're tuning a lot of the additional battle systems that they're putting into the game.
07:22And so they are evaluating looking at what was in the previous Soul Calibur games, you know, the armor break
07:29system being one of those.
07:30And they really want to take all the feedback and then put in and implement just the best versions of
07:36everything that's been in the Soul Calibur series in the past.
07:38And then also if there was something that was good, but maybe needed a little bit of tweaking, then, you
07:44know, they want to go in and tweak those before, you know, before the final game is ready for the
07:48other five.
07:48Okay, so still a work in progress.
07:51Still a work in progress.
07:51Still sort of working on what to bring in, what to tweak.
07:54Yep.
07:55Obviously in terms of stages, you guys are still doing, you know, ornate places to fight and it looks like
08:02they change during the fight.
08:04During the match, yep.
08:04We've seen some walls fall away in this particular stage.
08:07Yes.
08:08So the torture chamber, definitely as the rounds go on or depending on how you interact with the stage, it
08:13will change its properties as you go.
08:16And so that's, you know, another really cool aspect of fighting in 3D is to really have environments and stages
08:24that you'll be able to interact with.
08:26And so did we just see the critical edge?
08:29Yes.
08:29Yes.
08:29So that was Pyrrha's critical edge attack.
08:32Yes.
08:32And Pyrrha is Sulphicia's daughter.
08:36So she should really bring in, there's, like, Apple doesn't fall apart from the tree here, huh?
08:40You gotta bring him in.
08:41Yes.
08:42Is Mama herself, you know, like, is she gonna be pitted against her own children in combat?
08:47Um, right now we haven't, we haven't really talked about what, what has happened to Sulphicia in the time between,
08:53uh, Soul Calibur 4 and Soul Calibur 5.
08:55So, we'll be revealing a little bit more about the story.
08:58Um, definitely the characters that are going to be in the game, um, we'll be revealing that over the next
09:03few months.
09:03All right, all right.
09:04But so for now we've seen Patroclus and, uh, Mitsurugi.
09:08And Mitsurugi.
09:09And then...
09:09And then now we have Pyrrha and Siegfried.
09:11Pyrrha and Siegfried, yep.
09:12So, um, one other thing you'll notice, um, with Siegfried is, um, if you get a good look at him...
09:16Is his sword as big as him?
09:18His sword is pretty much as big as he is.
09:21Um, but you'll, you'll see that, uh, he actually has, um, completely aged, um, between Sul Calibur 4 and Sul
09:27Calibur 5.
09:27So, Siegfried is 17 years older, and so, um, you can tell he's, it's a little more weathered at this
09:34point.
09:34Um, but then also he, you know, he has 17 years more experience, uh, in battle.
09:39So, um, that's gonna affect, um, some of his tactics and some of his attacks.
09:43Um, yet he's still gonna feel very familiar for the fans who played Siegfried beforehand.
09:48Um, so, similar, yet different.
09:51Yeah, so, uh, you guys sit, you know, sit down, and you got the moveset laid out, and you're like,
09:54alright, well, he's got, you know, overhand sword slash.
09:57Now, what happens, you know, two decades later when he does that?
10:00How does an older man do that?
10:02No, I don't know.
10:03Does it get a little harder for him to wield that big sword?
10:06Oh, well, you know, he, he is a fighter, and he's a warrior.
10:10So, you know, he stays in shape, he works out.
10:12So, and he's still gonna be able to do a lot of what he did before.
10:15You know, maybe he, you know, maybe he might be a little bit slower in some areas on certain attacks,
10:20but then he'll learn, uh, different ways to wield his weapon, so then he'll have new attacks, speedy attacks as
10:25well.
10:25So even though he's familiar, you know, folks, there, there are some changes, something new that's going on.
10:29Well, skill comes with age, let's put it like that.
10:31There you go.
10:31I mean, with this, with all the stances that he's had in the previous games,
10:35with the implementation of Brave Edge being in this,
10:38there's a lot of cool things that are gonna be different per stance.
10:41So, you know, both the casual player and the competitive player are gonna try to pick up on these new
10:46things
10:46that are just gonna be, number one, cool, and two, are gonna do a lot of damage and kick a
10:51lot of blood.
10:52Okay, so, uh, now you mentioned competitive player.
10:55Obviously, fighting games are competitive by nature, and we've got, you know, two people can fight locally on the screen,
11:01clearly.
11:01Yes.
11:02But, uh, let's talk about online play.
11:05Were you guys revealing sort of the extent of what you're trying to do there,
11:08any kind of modes you're bringing to the table?
11:09I mean, I think it's probably a given that you're gonna be able to fight people online.
11:13Yes, yes.
11:14Okay.
11:14You're definitely gonna be able to fight people online.
11:16Um, so you'll be able to fight, um, both locally, you know, with someone else, like on the couch, just
11:21on one system,
11:22and online, of course, with people around the world.
11:24Okay.
11:25Um, there's, there's actually some really cool stuff that we're gonna be doing online.
11:28Um, there's a lot-
11:30That you're gonna tell us about right now!
11:32There's, there's a lot of stuff that we're doing, um, that, that we think, you know, really makes that online
11:37experience, um, uh, just more robust, more fun for fighting gamers.
11:41And, um, you know, there's a lot of stuff that, um, you know, that the development team looked at, you
11:46know, other games and other genres,
11:47and said, you know, hey, like, what if we try to do this, but bring this into the fighting genre?
11:52Oh, interesting.
11:52As far as doing stuff online.
11:53You can see what your, maybe your fighting game competitors are doing, but what's happening in online gaming.
11:58In online gaming altogether, exactly.
12:00And then, of course, we're also looking at what our, you know, our, our competitors are doing in the fighting
12:05space as well.
12:06And so, um, the development team's really trying to piece together, you know, the best online experience for a fighting
12:12game.
12:12And one of the things that the development teams do, as well as what we do, is we make sure
12:16that we're reaching out and trying to hear out what the communities are actually saying.
12:20Because even the previous games, like, they, they're continuing to play SoCal before, and they're very vocal about everything in
12:28the game.
12:29So, you know, we make sure to hear them out, and, you know, we express all emotions and all feelings
12:34about how they feel about a particular thing.
12:36And we always put that into place, and we just want to make sure that that's on the table.
12:40So, there's a lot of thought behind it. It's not just like, oh, we want everyone to play online.
12:44But we want it to be the best experience that we can bring, and we bring it to the players.
12:48Cool. Well, I think the community right now is saying, why are you letting Ivy this game?
12:51Why are you letting Ivy this game?
12:51It's Drowned Strain, huh?
12:52Yes.
12:53So, we're gonna change.
12:54So, we're taking a look at Ivy in action now, and now she's obviously an iconic Soul Calibur character.
13:00Yes.
13:00You guys sort of talked about her for the first time earlier this week, but now we're gonna see her
13:04in action.
13:04Yes.
13:05And that nasty sword, chain, what is the word for that? I mean, that's just, like, that's her signature weapon.
13:11It's kind of her, like, a whip sword, because it's both, it's a sword, but then it extends out to
13:17be a whip as well.
13:18So, Ivy has always had a really unique fighting style, and so that, along with her unique dress and style
13:25herself,
13:26has always been something that fans, you know, really like, oh, you know, like Ivy, cool character.
13:34And, you know, one thing with her gameplay, so Ivy was always a cool, unique character.
13:39Mm-hmm.
13:39But, you know, Ivy was pretty hard to use. I mean, she was, she was definitely one of those characters
13:44that,
13:44if you picked up the, picked up the game as a novice player and tried to pick up Ivy,
13:49she didn't come as naturally to, you know, to either a button masher or a novice player as some of
13:55the other Soul Calibur characters.
13:56So, she was definitely a character that, you know, you need to be experienced.
14:00Took a little bit more practice.
14:01Exactly, to be able to play.
14:03So, um...
14:05Rich seems to have had some practice there.
14:06Yes.
14:08So, the dev team looked at Ivy and, you know, wanted to keep a lot of her iconic attacks,
14:13but, at the same time, made her a little bit simpler to use.
14:18So, that way, if you, you know, if you really like Ivy, you want to pick her up and play,
14:22you'll still be able to unleash some, you know, some really cool attacks without anything, you know,
14:26too extremely difficult.
14:28Okay.
14:28But, she still has a lot of her really tricky moves.
14:32So that, if you're an Ivy fan, which, you know, I know Ricardo is Ivy fan,
14:36if you're an Ivy fan, you know, you'll still have a lot of prospects to do with her.
14:41Now, is that a philosophy you guys are sort of extending to the whole roster?
14:44I mean, you know, you've talked a lot about sort of ways that you're, you know,
14:48with the critical edge attack, or the brave edge attack, making it a little more accessible,
14:52a little easier to activate those flashy things.
14:55You know, making Ivy's moveset a little bit, you know, easier to do, more powerful stuff.
14:59Is that sort of an approach you're taking to the whole game?
15:03Like, just letting people do the cool, flashy stuff?
15:05I mean, definitely.
15:06We want people to have fun with the game.
15:08You know, we want people to be able to do what they want to do best in the game,
15:12which is, you know, fight, you know, beat up people, show off really flashy, fun moves,
15:17and show off like, you know, hey, I did that, that's awesome, look at that.
15:21Yeah.
15:21So, we definitely want...
15:23Take that, psycho.
15:23Exactly.
15:24So, we definitely want to do that.
15:25And so, where the development team is tuning the game to, again, make it more accessible,
15:30so they're adding a lot of things like the quick step and the critical edge,
15:36which has, you know, a universal, you know, input motion for all the characters
15:41to make it easy for, you know, people to play.
15:43But at the same time, they're tuning it and they're adding in different things
15:48that the experienced players are going to be able to get in and do, which will, again,
15:55allow them to get better and to play it over time and then to really, you know, practice
15:59and get, you know, master those characters.
16:01So, the depth is still there.
16:02Yeah.
16:03The depth that was in all of the Soul Copy games is still in this one,
16:07but now you're going to have a new breed of players who are going to come into the series.
16:12And that's what we want.
16:12We just want to make it big.
16:14We want everybody to play this.
16:15So, you're going to make it big and more news to come for, oh, you got,
16:19you're picking your new challenger entering the ring here.
16:22A new challenger, yes.
16:22Test your medal.
16:24Yes.
16:24All right.
16:25So, who's your, who's your, even though I'll be using a pad, but.
16:28Using the pad, the D-pad.
16:30He's a killer pad.
16:31He's setting it up right now.
16:32You know, it's important to lay the foundation of your excuses.
16:36Before it happens.
16:38Yes.
16:38All right.
16:39Well, as you guys start this up, why don't you let us know when is Soul Calibur V coming out
16:44and on what platform?
16:46So, Soul Calibur V is coming out in 2012.
16:49Okay.
16:49So, next year we got a little bit of time to go on this, but it's coming, you know,
16:53it's still coming very soon.
16:54And it's coming out on Xbox 360 and PS3.
16:57All right.
16:57Let's see it here.
16:58Fight.
16:59Let's see one, let's see one round between you two.
17:01Okay.
17:02All right.
17:02This is, you know, I won't ask you questions.
17:05Focus all your energy on trying to rip out the other guys' soul.
17:09or, you know, as it were.
17:13Oops.
17:15And here we see they're fighting in some sort of Maxxon battlegrounds.
17:19Yes.
17:19Where a battle has rage and a lot of full men.
17:23This cast over nasty corpses.
17:25Just kind of like a little ivy.
17:30Oh, you got arcade sticks.
17:33Yes.
17:34All right, Dennis, Rich, thank you guys so much for coming on the show.
17:37Showing off Soul Calibur V.
17:39It's been a pleasure.
17:39Look forward to more as Soul Calibur V's release of next year approaches.
17:43Next year.
17:44We'll definitely be tracking it, keeping an eye on it.

17:51There was this place set up just right around the corner that's sort of arts and cinema lounge
17:56that's sponsored slash featuring Nintendo.
18:00I walked by last night and there was like big light shows projected on the wall.
18:04There was a DJ on the street corner and the whole area was thumping.
18:08So who knows what's in store for.
