00:08Siamo in studio di Capcom, e siamo qui a parlare di Dead Rising, off the record, Dead Rising 2, off
00:15the record.
00:16Dead Rising 2, off the record.
00:17Jason, welcome to the show, pleasure to have you here.
00:19Pleasure to be here.
00:20All right, Dead Rising 2, running around a mall, whacking zombies, trying to save your daughter, but off the record,
00:26that's a whole different thing.
00:27Give us the overview, what's going on?
00:29The Dead Rising 2, off the record, is a re-envisioning of the Dead Rising 2 outbreak in Fortune City,
00:35so it's still running around a casino world, killing zombies in the most interesting ways possible.
00:41Like jabbing them through the chest with a pony phoenix doll?
00:46That was pretty gnarly.
00:47And already here we're showing off our cool new combo weapon called the Electric Crusher, which is a sledgehammer combined
00:53with a battery.
00:54And the cool thing about this weapon, is this was a contest that we had, where we got all the
01:00Capcom fans to send in ideas, and this one was chosen.
01:03Vile Method came up with this idea, and the dev team actually put it in the game.
01:08So you got this cool weapon with the area effect, slamming it down in the ground, and electrocuting all the
01:13zombies.
01:13I'm wondering if Vile Method has a thing for Norse mythology, because that sort of reminds me of, you know,
01:18a hammer-wielding God's power.
01:20It does remind me of that, yeah.
01:23All right, so off the record, giant bug laser eyes, sorry.
01:27That's the thing with Dead Rising is, anytime you, you know, you turn away, you think you've got a handle
01:32on what's going on,
01:33some strange stuff is just liable to happen, and strange enemies are about to jump out at you, and strange
01:39weapons, you pick them up.
01:41It's just a lot of fun.
01:42And so off the record, now this is not, this is a different character.
01:46Yep.
01:46This is back to Frank West, the hero from the original Dead Rising 1 game.
01:51And like I said earlier, this is a re-envisioning of the Dead Rising 2 at Breaking Fortune City.
01:55So Frank West is back in the game.
01:57He brings a different set of skills to the game than Chuck Green, who was the hero of Dead Rising
02:022.
02:02He was a motorcycle champion, and he had a daughter that he had to keep safe.
02:07This time Frank West is back, and he's in photojournalist mode to sort of make his name and get himself
02:12back on top.
02:13Okay, so one of the mechanics that was, you know, very prevalent in Dead Rising, did not appear in Dead
02:18Rising 2, taking pictures.
02:20Is that back here and off the record?
02:22That is certainly back.
02:23That's one of Frank's big signatures, is that camera and that ability to go around and take pictures.
02:27And the beauty of bringing back the camera mechanic was we've got this incredibly lush world of Fortune City, the
02:33casinos, the malls,
02:34and now our new environment here, the Uranus Zone theme park, and all of these picture-taking opportunities.
02:40So you can take pictures of horror and erotica and funny moments.
02:46A little self-shot.
02:48Nice.
02:49So, yeah, all these opportunities to get in there and use the camera and earn PPs and level Frank up.
02:54Very cool.
02:56And that was a big thing people got into.
02:58It was just, you know, it's just another way to experience the mayhem of the Dead Rising world is trying
03:04to take pictures of it.
03:05And apparently another way to experience that mayhem is through carny games.
03:08Yeah.
03:09Yeah, the beauty of the theme park that we put in, we always knew that we wanted to add a
03:13new environment to the world of Fortune City,
03:16and we wanted it fully integrated into that world.
03:18And initially, we went down the path of let's do another casino, but do a cool theme, like an Asian
03:24theme or a space theme.
03:26But we realized that although visually that might look pretty cool, it wouldn't offer new gameplay.
03:30The theme park, the beauty is it offers new gameplay.
03:33We've got the rides, which you can lure zombies into with firecrackers and so on, and then kill them, take
03:38pictures of those for Big PP.
03:39And of course, the carny games where you can go in and you can just sort of mess around and
03:43play these things and level up the character.
03:45And of course, opens up a whole new array of goofy stuff you can pick up and combo weapons you
03:52can make.
03:52Yep.
03:52Now, we saw obviously this, the fan contest winner combo weapon.
03:57Can you give us an example of one or two others that maybe make an appearance?
04:01Yeah, earlier there we saw the Pegasus, which is a pony on a stick combined with fireworks, rocket fireworks.
04:09And of course, you impale a zombie with that, and the zombie goes up like a giant firework.
04:13Here on the screen right now, we've got a weapon called the Alien Probe.
04:17So this would be sort of a cheesy souvenir that you would get at the theme park.
04:22But of course, in the hands of Frank West, it's a zombie killing machine.
04:26Yes, I was wondering exactly how he would be wielding that.
04:29I was like, okay, maybe it's just like a taser baton kind of thing.
04:33No, no, Frank West, you know, just using, he uses things in very creative ways, you know.
04:40But I suppose survival demands it.
04:42It does, yeah.
04:44And you've got to have fun while you're surviving.
04:46Exactly.
04:46Now, so he's having some fun, he's surviving.
04:49But what is, you know, why is Frank West here?
04:51What's his goal?
04:51Like, what's going on?
04:53Yeah, Frank West, there's been some time since the Willamette incident,
04:56incident, which was the mall incident in Dead Rising 1.
04:59And the backstory that we have is he became very famous after the Willamette incident.
05:04He was on talk shows.
05:06He had his own TV show.
05:07He wrote a book and so on.
05:09But he kind of let that fan go to his head and flushed it all down the toilet.
05:13So he comes back to Fortune City, or comes to Fortune City to compete in Terror's Reality,
05:18which is the zombie killing game show.
05:19And, of course, Frank West, being an uber zombie killer, is the special guest star.
05:24That doesn't go too well for him.
05:26He gets kind of embarrassed.
05:27But, of course, he walks right into another outbreak and then discovers that this is his big chance
05:32to get back to photojournalist mode and actually get himself back on top.
05:35Okay.
05:36So he's, you know, he's risen to stardom.
05:39He's hit the bottom.
05:41And now he's trying to work his way back up.
05:42The best way he knows how, by shoving garbage cans onto horrible zombies and having them lift off.
05:48I wanted it to lift off last time, but it didn't because it says escape pod on it.
05:52But I was very satisfied to see it go that time.
05:54That's the whole combo mechanic.
05:56The beauty of it is sometimes you can take something that's fairly useless, like a garbage can.
06:01In this case, the themed ones that look like an escape pod.
06:04Combine that with fire extinguishers, and now you've got the cryopod.
06:07So that thing goes up, hovers over the zombies, and then freezes them.
06:11Nice.
06:11And here we go.
06:12There's the Pegasus in action.
06:14So the zombie gets launched.
06:18Oh, and if you can grab a shot.
06:20Sometimes it's not so easy to get a shot, but...
06:23It's tricky.
06:23That Pegasus took off.
06:25I mean, now what is that?
06:27It looks like some...
06:28That looks like it could...
06:29It's fit to be a boss monster or something.
06:31I don't know.
06:32Are we...
06:32No comment.
06:33Are we dealing with, like, giant robo...
06:36Great rides going on.
06:37It's just background.
06:38It's just background.
06:39Oh, yeah, totally.
06:39And that's, you know, it's just something there.
06:41You know, part of the amusement park.
06:43You can see one of the rides on the right here.
06:45Let's see.
06:46Actually, he's going to go in.
06:47No, he's going over there.
06:49The teacup ride?
06:50Yeah.
06:50Yeah, so this is one of the killer rides that we have in here.
06:53So you can use these fireworks as lures.
06:56And if you move the barricades or use a sword or something, break the barricades, as soon
07:01as you start throwing the fireworks into the ride, zombies go in, and, of course, they
07:06get sliced up by the ride.
07:08Now, I just went...
07:09A zombie blender.
07:10Yeah, I just went to a Six Flags Park recently, and I'm trying to picture some of the rides
07:14I went on there and, like, how efficacious they would be at zombie killing.
07:18This one certainly looks deadly.
07:21All right.
07:22Of course, if you get a shot at the right time, let's see if you can pull it off.
07:25Oh, a little early.
07:25Imminent doom, is that a category?
07:29Oh, there, the head goes off.
07:31That is a tough one at a time, but I imagine if you get a bunch of them in there,
07:35then,
07:37oh, boy.
07:38Yeah.
07:39So, yeah, you were talking earlier about some of the new weapons and so on.
07:42Yeah.
07:42Because the theme park, we needed to populate it with some items that make the world come
07:48alive.
07:49Mm-hmm.
07:49There were lots of opportunities for new weapons to add in, and new food and clothing as
07:53well.
07:53So, we've got popcorn and cotton candy and those kind of things, and then the clothing
07:57outfits, there's some ridiculous outfits that male and female staffers of the park would
08:03wear.
08:04So, I've been seeing some of these ladies walking around with, you know, like, scanty little
08:09outfits with things on their heads.
08:11So, Frank can actually wear one of those costumes?
08:14Of course.
08:15Yeah.
08:15And here's another one of our new combo weapons.
08:17That's a tennis ball launcher combined with motor oil.
08:19So, this one does a little 360 and shoots up the flaming tennis balls.
08:24Do not try that at the country club, kids.
08:29Flaming tennis balls.
08:30That's good.
08:31Fire is, fire is definitely fun.
08:32Motor oil, I imagine, would have, would be like Frank West's best friend.
08:37Like, it's flammable, you can pour it on all sorts of things.
08:41Yeah.
08:42That seems like a, that seems like a good time.
08:43All right.
08:44So, now, part of, you know, you're earning PP this whole time, and that sort of fuels your
08:50leveling up.
08:51We're at, you know, level 20 here.
08:53Is that, is that the max level we're set at?
08:55What kind of, what kind of leveling up is Frank doing, and what kind of new moves is he acquiring?
08:59Can you give us a little bit?
09:00Yeah, the leveling for this demo is set at number 20, but Frank being down and out, and
09:05he's kind of let himself go, he starts the game at level one again.
09:07But, of course, he can progress through the levels, he can earn skills.
09:11We've brought over all the original skills from Dead Rising 1, but then augmented those
09:15and added new skills as well.
09:17Okay.
09:17So, now, are some of these new skills that he learned that, like, maybe Chuck knew, or is
09:22it just new stuff for Frank?
09:24New stuff for Frank.
09:24Okay.
09:25And one thing that we've already talked about at E3 and so on is co-op for Dead Rising 2
09:31off the record will actually feature Frank and Chuck.
09:33And the cool part now, because we've given Frank a lot of his old animations from Dead
09:38Rising 1, plus these new skills, when these two guys are fighting side by side, you can
09:42actually tell that they're very different.
09:44It's not just two characters with the same animations.
09:46That are the same, yeah, just a, one of them's wearing a suit, and one of them's wearing
09:49a, a bike jacket.
09:51Yeah.
09:51So, this is another cool mini-game.
09:53It's sort of an oversized whack-a-mole.
09:55You can run around with a wacky hammer here and play it.
09:57Or if you find a sledgehammer, you can actually break them and get even more PP.
10:01If you, if you, if you figure that out.
10:04But, uh, this game here is called Mole Men from Uranus.
10:08Mm-hmm.
10:09And that's one of the great things about this series is the sense of humor.
10:12You know, because it's not, and it's not just the sort of stuff you guys put in there,
10:15like the wacky names.
10:16It's the organic things that happen that are just hilarious because of the, you know, the
10:22various things.
10:23I think one of the, one of our editors, you know, who's loved Dead Rising 2, one of his
10:27favorite things was to help revive his co-op partner.
10:30You know, you feed them food.
10:31Mm-hmm.
10:32But he loved to, like, find rotten food and then feed it to his co-op partner so that
10:36he would then wake up and be healthy but vomiting.
10:39Yep.
10:40You know, and it's, it's so, I imagine there's more of that co-op fun involved, you know,
10:44once Frank and Chuck team up.
10:46Yep.
10:47You know, co-op's a blast.
10:48Uh, single player obviously is a blast.
10:51We've, uh, got a, a very different story for this game as well.
10:55We can't talk too much about details on that yet, but it was important to redo the story
10:59and make sure that it was a Frank-centric story around him, um, sort of in the photojournalist
11:04mode trying to figure out this mystery.
11:06Oh!
11:07There's the, like, the knee, below the knees just left there.
11:11Yeah.
11:12This is one of those ones where if you can really get a lot of zombies in and time it
11:16right for when the thing comes down, it's really spectacular.
11:18And if, and it seems like it does give you a bunch of time, you know, like some of these
11:22rides give you more time than others.
11:24Yep.
11:24That teacup was coming around pretty frequently, but.
11:26Yep.
11:27Yep.
11:27The, you just got to get in there and figure out the timing and that's one of the beauties
11:30of Dead Rising as well is just the replayability because you've got this giant world.
11:34There's too much to do on one playthrough.
11:36Uh-huh.
11:36There's too much to, to do in an eight or nine hour playthrough from beginning to end.
11:40And the goal always with the Dead Rising franchise is when you finish a playthrough that you want
11:45to go back, you want to see all of that cool stuff that you missed the first time around.
11:48So for folks who are really eager for their first playthrough of Dead Rising 2 off the
11:53record, Jason, when are they going to get, when are they going to get to play it?
11:56So the release date is October 11th.
11:59Okay.
11:59And, uh, this game is going to be on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
12:03Fantastic, Jason.
12:04Thank you so much for bringing it by, showing us some mayhem.
12:07You're welcome.
12:07Much appreciated.
12:08Hope, uh, has Comic Con been going well for you guys?
12:10A lot of, a lot of excitement around the title?
12:11This is my first time here, so I'm having a blast.
12:14Oh yeah.
12:14But already down at the booth, people seem to be having a lot of fun with the demo.
12:17And, uh, we've got a cool thing as well that we're going to, uh, do later on, uh, comic
12:22book signing.
12:22So, uh, I'm going to sit down with, um, uh, Tom Waltz, uh, the author of the comic and
12:28sign some posters for the fans.
12:30Great.
12:30So if you folks are at Comic Con, come get your comics signed with Jason and Tom Waltz,
12:35uh, time.
12:36You know when that's going to be?
12:37Friday?
12:37Uh, six o'clock tonight.
12:39Six o'clock tonight.
12:40And then there's another one tomorrow.
12:41All right.
12:42Check your Comic Con pamphlet for more.
12:44And, uh, all right.
12:45Thank you, Jason.
12:45And now we are actually going back out on the show floor.
12:48You guessed it.
12:49Homer Ibarra is pursuing, uh, toys, people, video games, just all sorts of stuff out there.
12:57And, uh, let's take a look at what he's up to this time.
12:59Again, we are going back.
12:59Thanks for asking, please deaf, please.
12:59Let's take theēr onip added to the imaginary stone.
12:59That's okay.
12:59Grazie.
