01:29Lost, of course, is based on the hit US TV show
01:32about a group of plane crash survivors marooned on a mysterious island
01:36with little more than their troubled past for company.
01:39I spoke to the game's producer to find out more.
01:42So, Gaddy, Lost, the video game.
01:44Now, video game film adaptions, TV show adaptions have been done before,
01:50but mostly with more action-based shows, like, for example, Die Hard or Indiana Jones.
01:57And Lost is quite an unusual TV show.
02:01So how did you go about deciding what kind of genre you wanted the game to be?
02:05Yeah, you're 100% right.
02:06Lost is unusual and unique in its own way.
02:08And for me, the best way was to see what the fans want.
02:12Since the fans are the true audience for this game,
02:15we spent about a week doing a focus test and seeing what the fans liked about the show,
02:20how they felt about the show, what experiences they get to show,
02:23what emotions they feel in watching the show, and what they wanted inside the game.
02:27Once we got that information, we came up with our concept,
02:30and we developed a prototype.
02:32When the prototype was done, we called back those same fans to play the game,
02:36the prototype, and got their feedback.
02:38And from there, we just worked on and developed it slowly, slowly.
02:42I just put the past behind me.
02:44I want answers.
02:46Now.
02:48All in good time.
02:50So the next big question I have for you is the lead character, Elliot.
02:55Brand new character starts out with amnesia.
02:58So it's kind of a peculiar choice.
03:01A lot of people would have said it would have been easier to have the main character as, say, Jack
03:05or Kate.
03:06Why did you choose to have a brand new character?
03:08The reason why we chose to make a brand new character is for a couple of reasons.
03:12A, we wanted to have the fans live their own unique lost experience.
03:17And by playing Jack or Kate, we know what they're like.
03:19We know what their experience is.
03:20We know what their stories are like.
03:22And as well, we wanted people who are not fans of the show to play the game
03:25because they don't know about Jack.
03:27They don't know about Kate.
03:28We wanted the gamers to have their own unique experience
03:31and feel like they're really part of the show.
03:33Name's Jack.
03:34Wish I could introduce myself, but I can't remember my name or my past.
03:39It's all gone.
03:40Let me take a look, okay?
03:48I don't see any signs of head injury.
03:50I'd say you're suffering from amnesia brought on by the crash.
03:53We couldn't have playable flashbacks
03:55because Jack and Kate and all the other characters, you know what their flashbacks are.
03:59But by creating a new character, it gave us more opportunities, more flexibility
04:02to create more unique gameplay that's what's inside the flashbacks.
04:06That was my story, not yours.
04:09I mean, it must be incredibly difficult trying to make a video game
04:13based on such a massively popular show.
04:15You've already talked about the fans,
04:18and there's a very particular style to Lost.
04:21And earlier today, you were describing how there's almost a rule book about Lost.
04:27So how did you go about ensuring that the video game stayed true
04:31to all of what the TV show was about?
04:34The way we were able to keep the video game true to what the Shiva was about
04:39is by making sure we were speaking to the right people at ABC and Lost
04:44to make sure we kept straight with the mythologies.
04:45But even more important than that,
04:47we hired the very first scriptwriter of the Lost TV show
04:50to be part of our creative team.
04:52So if we had any questions about the black smoke, how it worked,
04:55any questions about the flashbacks, how they worked,
04:57how the character spoke, how the character acted, their mannerisms,
05:01she would help us.
05:02She helped us develop the story, helped us develop the dialogues,
05:05and also the involvement of ABC was quite big.
05:07So they always were very supportive.
05:08We got blueprints of all the hatches.
05:10We got overhead maps of all the locations of the tents on the beach.
05:14So together with the Lost team, the ABC team, and Ubisoft team,
05:19we worked together really to develop a cohesive communication
05:21to make sure that we had the real essence of Lost in this game.
05:25Lost is such an iconic show, and it does have its own particular style.
05:29What values of the TV show did you bring across
05:32that you felt just had to be in the game?
05:34The values that we had to have in the game from the show
05:36is that we really wanted to create the mood from the show,
05:40the mystery, the personal mystery of the characters,
05:43the whole ambience, the tension,
05:45and we wanted to get the tension to drive the action,
05:48to get the whole mood and all the ambience of the show in the game.
05:51Jack, you won't believe what I found.
05:55What's going on?
05:57Shut up!
06:01I was able to decrypt your laptop.
06:04And do you know what I found?
06:06I found that you have very good reasons to forget.
06:09So you mentioned the black smoke.
06:11So by playing the video game,
06:13am I going to find out loads of secrets
06:15that the TV show isn't going to tell me?
06:18No, you're not going to find secrets,
06:19but what you're going to find is elements that you haven't explored.
06:23For example, inside the swan interior, there's a magnetic wall,
06:25and you'll be able to go behind it.
06:27You'll be able to explore what's inside the black rock.
06:30But we're not going to be able to answer questions about mythology
06:33because we did not want the fans to have to buy a game
06:37to get answers to the show that they've been following for years and years.
06:40We didn't think that was a fair reason.
06:43Look out!
06:46The wind is breaking the fire!
06:49Well, let's talk about the sound of Lost.
06:53Let's talk about the music and, in particular, the voices.
06:56Now, I've already had a look at the demo that you were showing off today.
07:00Visually, it looks fantastic, particularly the characters' faces,
07:04the incredible likeness.
07:06And am I also correct in thinking you do use
07:09some of the original voice actors in the game?
07:12Yes, we do use some of the original voice actors.
07:14We have Tom, Desmond, Claire, Juliette, and Mikael
07:19who lended their voices as well to the game.
07:22One of our main elements were that we know losses about the characters,
07:25about the island, about the atmosphere.
07:27And we also managed to get Michael Giacchino,
07:30who's the original composer of the show,
07:31to do 60 minutes of original music for us.
07:37What did you find?
07:39I found a compass!
07:40Throw it up!
07:47So, what would you say is the thing that you're proudest about in this game?
07:51What I'm most proudest about is the playable flashback,
07:54because it took us a long time
07:55and a lot of hours of pulling our hairs
07:58and how to make them interesting but yet challenging enough for players.
08:01I can't believe you're taking photos for the travel section.
08:04You can stop at the newspaper this time.
08:11J.J. Abrams likes the Prince of Persia series,
08:15Beyond Good and Evil, Myst,
08:17and then Damon Lindelof is a huge black and white fan,
08:20Knights of the Old Republic, Call of Duty.
08:23Brian Burks likes the Far Cry series and Shooters.
08:27So, yes, we were really pleasant and surprised at that.
08:29They were gamers and they understood games,
08:31so it really helped our process along.
08:34We think you might be the one.
08:36Who are you people?
08:37We're the good guys.
08:39Well, Gally, I've got to say, I've looked at it today.
08:41It looks like an absolutely terrific game
08:43and I can't wait to play it when it comes out this February.
08:45Well, Gally, I've got to say, I've got to say, it's been a great time.
08:56But on August 2016, in July 2016,
08:58I'm ready to go get the chance this time.
08:58I'm ready to go get it right 보 At least we're getting a great time with them.
