00:11For the past 45 years, Iron Man has thrilled fans around the world as part of comic book lore
00:16But now the man in the iron suit of armor is about to take on his biggest audience, moviegoers
00:22If you were to invent a character that was the perfect character for a video game, you would come up
00:27with Iron Man
00:28And luckily Stanley already did
00:29What Marvel is really good at is they're really taking care to not only preserve what the fans like
00:34But doing things to make it appeal to a wider range of audience
00:37Stuff that everybody can relate to
00:39And that's the thing with all these comic books
00:40Is that they always have these general, fundamental human kind of sensibilities
00:45And bringing them out to a wider range of public who wouldn't necessarily go in the comic store
00:50But they'll watch a movie
00:51And the same people will probably end up playing the video games
00:54Designing a Nintendo Wii game around Iron Man's many varied abilities and powers
00:59Provides interesting gameplay experiences, but also presents some interesting development challenges
01:04Yeah, it's actually hugely difficult
01:07I think one of the things that makes Iron Man so compelling but also makes him difficult is he can
01:11do so much
01:11He can fly, he's got super strength, he's got the armor shield, the unit beam, the repulsor blast
01:16All these different things, you've got to balance gameplay for all those things
01:18Most important thing for programming on the Wii is making the gameplay feel intuitive for the players
01:24Iron Man flies around, so we're going to have to look at opening the environments
01:28Creating a little more open, less linear
01:30Anybody can come up with any crazy idea
01:32It's more fun to do it when you're like, okay, no, I can't go there, I can't go there
01:35This is the box that's defined for me
01:37Okay, let's see how far I can push that box while staying in that box
01:41We can't really load and unload parts of levels when your character can fly everywhere
01:46And go everywhere and see everywhere at the same time
01:49So that's been the biggest challenge for sure
01:50There's a lot more physicality in our experience
01:53You're going to be able to punch just like you're going to punch with Iron Man
01:56You're going to fly around by pointing the Wiimote in the screen
01:58With the game design in place for the Nintendo Wii
02:01The next step for the developers at A2M in Montreal
02:04Was to meet with the filmmakers and incorporate the look and feel of the film into the game
02:09There was a lot of back and forth
02:10And we're trying to push that even further between the film team and the game team
02:13I think it's customary for the game team to sit there and wait for the assets
02:17And have the film team dictate
02:18But I think the Iron Man film team has been very collaborative and very interested
02:23Fortunately, we were working on this movie for a long enough time
02:26That we could get assets to them early enough on
02:29That it could actually inform the design of the game
02:31Creating a game based on a character from the pages of a comic book
02:34Allows Montreal-based developer A2M to pull from the vast Marvel library
02:39Enabling them to further expand on the film
02:41And thoroughly explore the world of Iron Man
02:44The movie is a two-hour experience
02:46And we're providing an experience that's a lot longer than that
02:49There was a lot of pre-production stuff that we got to see in reference
02:52That I think is going to influence the game in one way or another
02:55I think there's a lot of missions that have things that were early set-piece action battles
02:59That got changed or scaled back
03:01There were some, like all movies, there's a lot of script changes
03:03And a lot of character changes and that sort of thing
03:05And so we took a lot of that early inspiration
03:07Some of it may not end up in the movie
03:09But is definitely driving some of the missions that we have
03:12And so that's very exciting
03:14One of the things we're doing is we're digging a little bit deeper
03:17Into the whole Tony Stark, Iron Man mythos
03:21We're bringing back old enemies
03:22We're bringing back characters that are very important to Tony Stark
03:25As part of the development process
03:27A2M received feedback from not only Marvel
03:30But from the film's director and star
03:33Other research included meeting the actors
03:35Meeting the film crew
03:36Talking with Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr.
03:39Getting their take on how they saw Iron Man
03:41And the first thing I noticed was how true the actual character designs and movement
03:48And even controls were to what was in the movie
03:51It's a ton of work to make anything ever look cool
03:56And the amount of man hours and ingenuity
03:59And just kind of 99% perspiration of it all
04:03Taking their cue from their big screen counterpart
04:06Montreal-based developer A2M starts players off with the birth of Iron Man
04:10And his bulky gray armor
04:12I was never satisfied with the Iron Man costume in the comics
04:17As long-time readers will know
04:20Because every few issues I'd have the artist change the costume
04:24He must have had more costume changes
04:27More armor changes than any character in the world
04:31You start in a very basic suit
04:34And it's all the upgrades
04:35And as you're going through the game
04:36You're building the suit and making it better
04:38And adding stuff to it, adding layers to it
04:39I think the Mark 1 suit from the film
04:42I think they've done an amazing job updating the old classic tin can
04:45I think my classic 60s gray tin can Iron Man outfit
04:49Is definitely my favorite, but I love how they've updated it
04:51If only we had had that kind of armor in the comic books
04:55I think the book would have sold twice as well
04:58I love it
04:58I love the way Iron Man looks
05:01I love the way you have him fly
05:03I love the way he shoots those repulsor rays
05:06I mean, oh man
05:08In order to bring these characters to life
05:10Sega and A2M were able to enlist many of the film's stars to reprise their roles
05:15Well, I think the luckiest thing that happened
05:18Was getting Robert Downey Jr. to play Tony Stark
05:23That guy was born to be Tony Stark
05:27When I first saw him with his little beard and everything
05:30The way Tony has it
05:31Oh man, that was so gratifying
05:33I studied these three scenes for the screen test within an inch of my life
05:38I went so absolutely ape turds
05:42Prepping myself to do these three scenes
05:44No one else really had a prayer
05:47In addition to Robert Downey Jr., Sean Toob returns to play Yinssen
05:52Yinssen is basically, I consider him to be the creator of Iron Man
05:59He basically starts his journey
06:02And Oscar nominee Terrence Howard plays Tony Stark's best friend, James Rhodes
06:07Doing it for the video game
06:09You're trying to perceive what might be the end result
06:14You know, and you can't be too sure
06:16So it's a little more nerve-wracking
06:18As far as the level of performance that you output
06:23Regardless of the techniques and tools involved
06:25The combined efforts of Sega, A2M, Marvel, and the filmmakers
06:30Promise to deliver a truly unique superhero game
06:33And one for a character who is long overdue
06:35My publisher at the time said, Stan, you're crazy
06:38Nobody's going to want to read about a guy who makes weapons for war
06:43And people don't like wealthy heroes
06:46A guy who flaunts his wealth and he's a playboy
06:49I said, we'll make them like him
06:52And it worked
