01:30We'll be playing as the Chosokabe faction, seen here, the guys in the black armour with the white mons on
01:35their banner.
01:35And we'll be playing against the evil and dastardly Takeda faction, who of course have the red banners with the
01:40black mons on them.
01:42Okay, so with the general speeches done and my army is suitably void, we're ready to enter combat.
01:46So, my army is going to consist of the very brave General Motachika, five katana cavalry, four samurai on horseback,
01:54four katana samurai, very good elite kind of hand-to-hand units, five yari ashigaru, that's peasants with spears, and
02:01five bow ashigaru, that's peasants with bows.
02:03And Ingemar, what's the Takeda forces going to consist of?
02:06Right, so the Takeda army is made up of the fearsome General Sheehan, four katana units, five yari ashigaru units,
02:13and double the amount of bow ashigaru as the player has.
02:16So, you can see now that the Takeda's moved forwards toward our line, and our own Chosokave samurai are now
02:21being sent forward to engage them.
02:23I guess Ingemar, my question here is, when does the AI know how to be aggressive or defensive?
02:27Coming in from the campaign map, it will have certain objectives to complete.
02:30Now, those objectives will have loosened the coupling between the two so that the AI now should be more flexible,
02:36so that if it's completely outnumbered on the attack, it might be a bit defensive, or vice versa, if it's
02:42massively overpowering on the defense, it might be aggressive.
02:45Okay, so, as you can see now, the matched combat's coming into play.
02:48All of these units are attacking one another in very well motion-captured hand-to-hand matched combat.
02:52We use, of course, real professional martial artists in order to motion-capture this stuff to make sure it's as
02:57realistic as possible.
02:58Unfortunately, all the matched combat in the world doesn't help, and my own samurai are roundly beaten and routed from
03:03the battlefield in complete dishonor.
03:05And the enemy samurai return to their lines.
03:08We're sending our archers forward, and they'll, of course, be protecting the bulk of our army, made up, of course,
03:12of these hua-yari peasants.
03:14So, Ingemar, tell me, does the AI kind of get affected by seeing large numbers of men marching towards its
03:19position?
03:19Definitely. The AI is human just like the player's human. We're all human here.
03:24What are you saying is the AI has human emotions?
03:26Definitely, definitely. It will get scared of the player's army just like the player's army should tremble between a mighty
03:31AI army.
03:33It's a proud fight.
03:34Okay, so you can see now that we've spotted a weakness on the far right-hand side as we see
03:38it.
03:38We send a single unit of cavalry to attack.
03:41As you can see, my cavalry now racing across the open field. Hopefully we'll get there in time.
03:45And no. Unfortunately, I'm ambushed by a whole load of archers who are hidden in the trees,
03:50and they're hitting me with these horrible fire arrows which do a ton of damage and have a decent amount
03:54of range.
03:55So my entire cavalry charge is decimated before it reaches its goal.
03:58Is this a common thing to see the AI use these upgrades and kind of tactics?
04:01Depending on what the AI has to play with, it will definitely lose it to its maximum potential.
04:05Awesome. So as you can see there, it's routed my troops, and it's now decided it's confident enough to move
04:10forward.
04:11Is this again another natural development in the battle?
04:13So, you know, when the AI feels like it's got the upper hand and I've thrown some men at it
04:16and lost,
04:16is it going to be ready to come out and engage me?
04:18If you sacrifice a large portion of the force and it sees a good attack opportunity, it will go for
04:22it.
04:23Okay, so now we've got this massive charge of AI units moving in on our position.
04:26We're of course engaged with these fire arrows from the left and the right.
04:29It is time to take my human brain and outwit the machine.
04:33So, I'm going to go ahead and try and sneak them around the back and see if I can attack
04:37using my cavalry from a hidden position.
04:40I'm hoping this is a tactic that will work.
04:41On some occasion, if you've got speed, yes.
04:44Awesome.
04:44So the AI can actually be taken kind of by surprise.
04:46It's not going to know everything about the battlefield at all moments.
04:48No, it could be there to do something else.
04:59All right, so you can see now that my cavalry has made it around the back and with a few
05:03clicks of the mouse,
05:04I'm going to have a giant silhouetted ball of death cresting the arch here.
05:13And here they come.
05:14They come in through the trees and smash the enemy arches to pieces.
05:16A force of gravity carrying those heavy horse samurai down the hill and smashing those arches left, right and centre.
05:27So, we're now going to turn our attention with the cavalry onto the remaining archer unit in that forest
05:31and try and mop up this enemy flank so as we can then turn our attention on their central line.
05:36So, I've now routed the AI who are in this forest.
05:38I'm going to turn the entire of this cavalry that's now behind the enemy line and rush it into the
05:42rear.
05:43And, of course, I'm still pressing them from the front with my own meat grinder Hashigaru units.
05:47And we're now making some serious damage.
05:49We can see now, oh, excellent, it's going to be a chain round.
05:51The enemy armies, of course, all of the units are panicking and going as one.
05:54So, this morale system really affects the AI as much as it affected my units earlier as well.
05:59You can see now we've destroyed and routed the enemy army.
06:01They're in full flight and, unfortunately for them, Dishonour and Shame awaits them back home
06:05whilst Honour, Saki and a long night party await my own.
06:08Very, very victorious troops.
06:10Thank you very much, everybody, for watching.
06:12And, of course, thank you to Ingmar for joining me today
06:15and for outlining some of what we can expect from the battle AI in Shogun 2 Total War.
06:25Thank you very much.
