Meloni admits defeat as Italians reject judicial reform in major referendum

The Italian premier conceded defeat after preliminary results showed that most voters rejected the proposed changes to Italy's judiciary, in what was widely seen as a major test of her government.

00:01Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni conceded defeat Monday in a referendum on judicial reform,
00:08but said she would not resign.

00:28Voters rejected the constitutional reforme,
00:31with around 55% voting no and 45% voting yes,
00:36based on nearly all the votes counted.
00:39Turnout reached nearly 59%.
00:41The reforme would have split Italy's judiciary into separate career paths for judges and prosecutors,
00:48divided the superior council of the magistracy into two bodies,
00:51and created a new disciplinary court.
00:54Parliament approved the reform in October 2025,
00:57but it failed to secure the two-thirds majority needed to avoid a popular vote.
