02:56to remote mountainous areas in other states, but Chairman Sal and Dr. Ben both believe this method
03:02is unfeasible. If any waste barrel breaks during transport, the 437B would contaminate the entire
03:09country. However, the governor refuses to listen and insists that the Nuclear Energy Commission
03:15must take primary responsibility for this disaster and complete the cleanup. Chairman Sal and Dr.
03:21Ben are filled with bitterness, unable to find a reason to argue. As early as the second week after
03:27the nuclear accident was exposed, the owner of the abandoned medical center's land was summoned by
03:32the police. However, the businessman complained bitterly. He only bought the land, the buildings
03:38and all property on the ground belonged to the original radiation medical center. When the police
03:43found the head of the medical center, he passed the buck directly to the local Santa Casa Hospital,
03:49claiming they only had a cooperative relationship and that the radiation equipment was provided by
03:54the hospital and did not belong to him. The hospital's attitude was even more shameless,
04:01claiming that since the equipment was in the medical center, the center should be responsible
04:05for its maintenance and use. They even questioned why the Nuclear Energy Commission failed to supervise
04:11and inspect the equipment if the management was inactive. After going in a circle, the responsibility
04:17was entirely pushed back onto the Nuclear Energy Commission. Dr. Ben had checked the records before.
04:23This abandoned radiation equipment had never been reported or registered. But to others, this reason
04:29seemed like nothing more than an excuse to deflect blame. However, Dr. Ben never thought of shirking
04:35his duty. He only thought about how to do the cleanup work well. While studying the final storage location
04:41for the waste, he directly ignored the governor's opinion, believing it should be located within their own state.
04:47To everyone's surprise, the governor used his connections with the president to forcibly pass
04:52a decision to transport the waste to the Kachimbo Mountains in the neighboring state of Para.
04:57Dr. Ben was so angry he almost spat blood, questioning how the governor could dump waste in a place with
05:03rich groundwater resources. The governor didn't care, believing it was better than leaving it in a
05:08densely populated city. He then shamelessly stated that the decontamination and transport would still be
05:14handled by the commission's expert team, completely absolving himself of the dirty work.
05:19What the governor didn't expect was that before the transport began, indigenous people from the Kachimbo
05:25Mountains traveled thousands of miles to protest at the government gates in Goyas. They claimed the waste would
05:30seriously pollute their homes and that it was a desecration of natural laws. After this was exposed,
05:36the governor felt the pressure of a storm again. But with the president's backing, his attitude
05:42remained exceptionally tough. In the Air Force Hospital in Rio, as the little girl and Anthony
05:47both passed away, the condition of other patients rapidly deteriorated. Soon, two more patients were
05:54declared dead. They were employees from the scrapyard who handled the waste. Devere, the owner,
06:00finally realized the horror of the colored powder. His heart was full of regret and self-reproach.
06:06Not only did those close to him die one after another, but even the young scavenger who sold
06:12him the scrap was now terminally ill, his arms starting to rot. The experts in the hospital were
06:18frowning. After discussion, they decided to continue using cerebrospinal fluid protein therapy,
06:24believing the girl and Anthony died because they were already severely infected before the injection.
06:29Fortunately, after three days of continuous sweating, Marcio finally walked out of the
06:35isolation center unharmed. However, even harsher challenges awaited him. Despite the protests
06:41from the indigenous people, the mad governor insisted on moving the waste. Dr. Ben threatened
06:47to complain to the president in the name of the commission, insisting the waste must be handled
06:51within the state. Seeing a change in the governor's attitude, Dr. Ben suggested telling the public that
06:57this was only a temporary storage site. As time passed, people would stop mentioning it.
07:03The governor finally compromised. But the honest scholar never expected the governor's revenge to
07:08come so quickly. A lawyer walked into Dr. Ben's office, saying the prosecutor's office had filed a
07:14lawsuit for negligent homicide, claiming that as the head of the commission, he should be responsible for
07:21the leak. Marcio, who had just been discharged, walked in at that moment. Dr. Ben didn't dwell on the
07:28lawsuit and assigned Marcio a new task, assisting in the preparation of the waste storage site.
07:33Before Marcio could even agree, the chairman anxiously reminded Dr. Ben to take the lawsuit
07:39seriously, as it concerned the commission's reputation. Meanwhile, the governor was making
07:44grand claims to the media, shifting all blame for the leak onto the commission, while portraying his
07:50government as active in the relief efforts. He emphasized that the waste was only at a temporary
07:55site. However, before the first batch of waste arrived at the site, it was met with fierce
08:01opposition from local residents, who blocked the roads. Not even a waste barrel could pass.
08:06The governor arrived at the scene and, to calm the public, promised to choose a new location if
08:12they dispersed. The residents believed him, not knowing it was just a delaying tactic. Dr. Ben had
08:18already surveyed the area, and this site was the best choice. To avoid a riot, they decided to act at
08:24night.
08:24Large trucks loaded with radioactive waste moved through the silent streets like ghosts.
08:30Marcio, as the site manager, directed the transport under immense pressure. He suddenly remembered his
08:36father's advice to find a teaching job in Rio and avoid this dangerous work, but Marcio had refused
08:42without hesitation, believing what he was doing now was more meaningful than teaching. While the trucks
08:48moved steadily, a thrilling rescue was happening at the Air Force Hospital in Rio. The young scavenger had
08:54a fever of 40 degrees, and his infected arm had to be amputated immediately. Since each person can
09:01only withstand a limited amount of radiation per day, two teams of surgeons had to work in shifts.
09:07Fortunately, they were top medical experts and successfully completed the surgery. Good work!
09:13However, Marcio encountered trouble again. Local residents soon realized they had been deceived.
09:18Facing the furious villagers, Marcio gave an impassioned speech, successfully persuading them to
09:25allow the waste to be buried in their jurisdiction. On the other side of the city, the hearing for Dr.
09:31Ben was held. With his lawyer's help, he insisted that the commission only had records of old equipment,
09:37and no record of the highly dangerous radiation source. The judge agreed that Dr. Ben should not bear
09:43primary responsibility. But Dr. Ben felt no joy. Although he fulfilled all legal procedures,
09:49he felt morally guilty. If he had discovered the clinic sooner or supervised radiation sources more
09:55strictly, there wouldn't have been so many casualties or such economic loss. He praised the deceased
10:01Anthony as a model of responsibility and courage, while blaming the disaster on every negligent official
10:07and the chain. Under Marcio's supervision, contaminated buildings in Goiania were cleared
10:13one by one. Lina stood outside the cordon, watching her home turn to rubble. A worker handed her a photo
10:19frame of a smiling girl, as if the nightmare had never happened. The commission chairman learned his
10:25lesson and signed a resolution to inspect all radiology departments in Brazil. Dr. Ben invited Marcio to
10:32officially join the Nuclear Energy Commission instead of becoming a teacher. Marcio laughed,
10:37But Dr. Ben said he deserved it for bearing so much responsibility. In the end, the scrapyard
10:43owner and his cousin miraculously recovered. Most people there lost loved ones and homes and would
10:49live under medical monitoring for the rest of their lives. The Goiania accident is recognized as the
10:54worst non-power plant radiation accident in history. Five people were charged with manslaughter,
11:00and over 6,000 tons of waste were buried. Nearly 40 years later, no accidents have occurred on that land.
11:07This disaster left a scar, reminding the world that technological progress without responsibility brings
11:13to its endless destruction.
