00:00Hey there, my name is Hogarth de LaPlante. I am the lead environment artist at 2K Marin.
00:06We've been working very hard for the last couple of years on Bioshock 2.
00:10My responsibility on Bioshock 2 has been as lead environment artist.
00:15So basically I am in charge of a team that builds Rapture and does all the lighting and all the
00:20environment modeling for the location of Rapture,
00:23which, if you don't know, is an underwater utopia that was constructed under the Atlantic Ocean.
00:31So I'm going to show off a little bit of Bioshock 2 today. I'm going to show two main things
00:37today.
00:37The first thing I want to show you is how the player, who is a big daddy in Bioshock 2,
00:44interacts with little sisters this time around.
00:48After that, we are going to move into a section of Rapture called Ryan Amusements, which I'll describe a little
00:54bit as we get closer.
00:57So right now, I've kind of skipped ahead here a little bit and taken down a big daddy, another big
01:05daddy.
01:05Normally big daddies wander around the city of Rapture protecting little sisters.
01:10I actually just killed this guy in a protracted, like, boss battle, and I'm going to make the choice here
01:18to adopt my first little sister.
01:21So adoption is a new mechanic that we've introduced in Bioshock 2, and we feel like it makes the choice
01:28that you make between harvesting a little sister
01:31or saving her a little bit more, you're a little bit more responsible for what happens to her.
01:37So once you decide to adopt a little sister, now you're actually teamed up with her, and your job is
01:44to protect her as you fight your way through Rapture.
01:47She can help you by gathering Adam from dead bodies that are strewn around the world.
01:54For people that don't know, Adam is a genetic material that little sisters can process and give back to you
02:02so that you can charge up your genetic superpowers.
02:04So we have a little sister basically riding on our shoulders right now, and we're going to go search around
02:10Rapture for some Adam.
02:12So here's one right here. This body is filled with Adam.
02:15If I tell my little sister to start gathering it, it's going to lure a bunch of enemies out of
02:21Rapture.
02:21So the first thing I want to do is hack these vending machines so I can purchase some more ammunition
02:28because I want to set up a bunch of traps and stuff around this body before all the enemies start
02:34coming out of the woodwork.
02:35So I'm kind of getting ready for an ambush that's going to happen when my little sister ends up doing
02:42her gather.
02:42M préservo
02:44Thank you
02:46Thank you
02:46Thank you
03:20ok so she's all done
03:22she's filled up with Adam
03:23we're going to pick her up again
03:25and we're going to go look for some more
03:27ok so now we're walking into
03:29what is called journey to the surface
03:32this is part of the Ryan Amusements level
03:34of Rapture
03:37Andrew Ryan is the guy who built
03:40this city of Rapture
03:42in the late 40's
03:44and he designed it as a kind of capitalist utopia
03:48so people moved down under the ocean
03:50to try to escape regulations
03:52and like kind of government interference
03:56on the surface
03:57Andrew Ryan realized that
03:59this was going to be a fully functioning city
04:01and that there were going to be
04:02like little kids and babies being born
04:04and stuff down in Rapture
04:06so he knew that they would naturally be curious
04:09about what the surface world was like
04:11so he decided to make this kind of
04:13like theme park ride
04:17called Journey to the Surface
04:18that's more of a propaganda piece
04:20extolling the virtues of Rapture
04:23and trying to scare kids
04:25into thinking that the surface world
04:27of Earth is no longer a place
04:29that anyone would want to live in
04:53so these enemies that we're fighting
04:55splicers for people who aren't familiar
04:57are basically
05:00they're citizens of Rapture
05:02who used to be normal people
05:03but they became addicted to Adam
05:05they started trying to improve their
05:07you know improve their bodies
05:09with this genetic material
05:11and it's addictive
05:12and they started mutating
05:14and turning into kind of Adam maniacs
05:17basically
05:26you can see right there
05:27one of the new things in Bioshock 2
05:29our AIs actually have a pretty sophisticated
05:32cover mechanic now
05:33she was hiding behind this crate over here
05:36so the AI is vastly improved
05:39over the original Bioshock
05:40another thing we have in Bioshock 2
05:43that we didn't have in Bioshock 1
05:45is we have dual wield now
05:47so even though you play a big daddy in Bioshock 2
05:51you're a particular type of big daddy
05:53that's able to use plasmids
05:55and in Bioshock 2
05:56we decided to let you have plasmids
05:58in the left hand
05:59and the weapon in the right hand simultaneously
06:01so you can kind of dual trigger it
06:03which is a really fun way to play
06:06also another thing that we've changed
06:08in Bioshock 2
06:10over Bioshock 1
06:12is the hacking mini game
06:14or mechanic
06:14so right now you can actually
06:16in Bioshock 2
06:17hack machines
06:19from a distance
06:20with this distance hack tool
06:22so there's a turret over here
06:25I'm going to shoot
06:26with the distance hack tool
06:28then I'm going to go hide
06:29while I play the hack game here
06:37and now that I've hacked it
06:38we'll see that the turret
06:40is on my side
06:41it's going to kill that splicer
06:45we really wanted to
06:46in Bioshock 2
06:50allow players to
06:51grow their character
06:52on certain axes
06:53so you can be like
06:54a machine manipulator
06:55where you're really good at hacking
06:57you could be
06:57you know
06:58you could have tons of plasmid slots
07:00if you want to be
07:01really good with plasmids
07:02you could grow
07:03certain plasmid types
07:04like incinerate
07:05has three different types
07:07of incinerate
07:08each one more powerful
07:09than the next
07:10but also
07:11unlike Bioshock 1
07:13as you get the upgraded versions
07:15of each one of these plasmids
07:16like incinerate 2
07:18is basically utilized
07:20in a completely different way
07:22than incinerate 1
07:23and same thing
07:23with incinerate 3
07:24so if you really like
07:25using the incinerate plasmid
07:26you can choose to grow
07:27your character
07:28along the incinerate axis
07:29and you do that
07:31by choosing
07:32which upgrades
07:33to purchase
07:33with Adam
07:34that you get
07:35from Little Sisters
07:36so anyway
07:37that was a little bit
07:38of Bioshock 2
07:38and a little bit
07:39of the Ryan
07:39amusements level
07:40from Rapture
07:42we are in the finishing stages
07:45of Bioshock 2
07:46right now
07:46on the development end
07:47and our ship date
07:49is February 9, 2010
07:52I think fans
07:53of the first game
07:53are going to love
07:54Bioshock 2
07:55but I also think
07:56it's going to be
07:56a great draw
07:57for people
07:58who have never played
07:59the first Bioshock
08:01so hopefully people like it
08:02we're sure
08:03excited about it
