00:04the lake district england's largest national park absolute perfection i don't actually think
00:11it gets better than this every year over 18 million people flock to its spectacular landscape
00:20but if any of them lose something precious here finding it can be tough i was absolutely distraught
00:28gave me a heart attack it was a devastating day wasn't it it gone i thought no i hope there's
00:35a
00:35chance so i brought together local detectorists and underwater explorers it's like avengers assemble
00:42isn't it to scour lake and fell for treasured lost possessions no way sometimes our searches
00:51bring up surprises it looks like it's been in a while other times i've got a hair curler
00:58what we pull up is just rubbish that's not the same bike ready to be transformed into new treasures
01:06oh that's beautiful by some of the finest crafters from the region run away
01:12the best of all this is our guy does it get better than this is when we can reunite our
01:18finds
01:21with the people who thought they were lost forever
01:26this is really special good now get back to the lake and find more stuff
01:39on today's episode let's go find a shiny thing let's do it a tale of two rings one lost to
01:45the lake
01:46it was like looking for a needle in a haystack and one to a castle it's going to be our
01:52silver
01:52wedding anniversary next year to find the ring that would mean the world for us our detectorists
01:59and divers give it their all aluminum cans horrible things really determined to succeed that's interesting
02:08not something you see every day but face tough challenges the wind's coming in rain's coming in
02:15and extreme weather can we get the rings back to their owners i've been waiting i've only got more
02:22and more excited first we're taking on a search in a new part of the lakes for us crummock water
02:32this stunning peaceful stretch of water is a perfect example of the extraordinary beauty of the lakes
02:40something husband and wife andy and demi never take for granted
02:47i've grown up here so it's been nice to show andy where i grew up we spend a lot of
02:52time walking up
02:54the mountains mainly but also paddle boarding kayaking when the weather permits which is quite rare
03:01we met eight years ago met in the pub while i was up here for work and never went home
03:06and never
03:06went home again yeah yeah been married just over three years now haven't we yeah our marriage has
03:14been lovely ever since we bought a house yeah we had a baby arthur's 10 months he was born in
03:21november
03:21of last year he's a bit of a wild one isn't he certainly is on a recent summer's day andy
03:29and demi
03:29had organized a big day out with baby arthur and their extended family here at crummock
03:36the kids want to go over to the little island so we think yeah that's okay i'll swim in the
03:41water
03:41holding on to the kayak the kids are having a great time the sun's out i get out onto the
03:46island first
03:47that's when i realized that my wedding rings no longer on my finger
03:55despite a search by the whole family andy's precious ring was nowhere to be found in this vast lake
04:03but today we're hoping to change that
04:07oh i got first find what is it what is it it's the top of a uh a fishing pole
04:14you got your treasure hunting eyeballs i've got my treasure hunting eyes on today i'm not going to
04:21be missing nothing free divers renee james and angus are hoping they'll have better look than the family
04:27finding andy's ring it seems like it's silver and then the middle is what is gold that's quite pretty
04:34we know that he sat off from the shore here and he was holding onto a kayak straight out to
04:39the island
04:40here he stood up on the island and instantly he realized his wedding room was not on every time
04:47we go swimming the last thing i always say to him is take your wedding ring off and this particular
04:53day
04:53we were in a rush weren't we the one time the one time i decide to lose it yes it
05:00was really like
05:01looking for a needle in a haystack we realized that the chances of finding the ring would slim to none
05:08the fact that this is not even a month ago is really going to help us today let's go find
05:12a shiny
05:13thing let's do it andy swam a direct line out to the small island so the free divers are planning
05:19to start at the near shore and retrace the same path across
05:27i have got a coin from 1931 i've been nice fine it was just right right there as well king
05:39george
05:42hopefully a lucky coin but the divers are facing a particular challenge here peculiar to this lake
05:58we've got some really strong positives for here it's actually really really clear you've got really
06:05good visibility so we're not struggling to see anywhere on the bottom i'd say the big con with
06:11here is the fact as soon as we come away from the shore it very quickly turns into like this
06:17very
06:17coarse quite long grass on the bottom so when you're trying to metal detect through it it's actually very
06:24hard to have your metal detector flat on the bottom despite the coarse lake bed the team is bringing up
06:31plenty of their usual discoveries one thing the metal detectors love is aluminum cans horrible things
06:41really but also something far more random considering the distance to the nearest putting green
06:49loads of golf balls loads of golf balls all golf balls sad
06:54sunglasses feels pretty trendy
06:58but so far no sign of andy's ring back to it this is not the most graceful entry i've ever
07:08done into the lake
07:26the lake district is known for its outstanding natural beauty
07:32but it also has its fair share of historic monuments and buildings
07:41henrith castle was built in the late 14th century as a show of power and defense against the threat
07:47of scottish invasion today its ruins attract thousands of visitors
07:56including one member of the public who recently sent us a heartfelt plea
08:01merseyside reverend daljeet
08:05hello there nice to meet you hello lovely to meet you helen so you got in touch with us and
08:11said that
08:12you lost something i just need to make a confession here because it was my wife who
08:17initially contacted to tell my story and i think the backdrop behind that is i think secretly she hasn't
08:25fully forgiven me uh in the july of 2017 we went to penriff castle and we met my wife's brother
08:36and his family
08:37and being the good fun uncle i took the nephews off and served the castle walls we didn't go
08:44particularly high only a foot above ground i think i must have been more into this game than the kids
08:50because then next minute i thought no i've got to traverse a bit longer than these guys so i took
08:54my
08:54shoes and socks off for a little bit of extra traction grip then i realized i take my rings off
09:01for the challenge both my wedding ring and my engagement ring and i slipped them inside my sock
09:08and then forgot you know best part of an hour later and then it dawned on me where are my
09:13rings
09:13i ran back it was a sunny day and i saw my engagement ring listening i thought great i'm in
09:20the right
09:20place looked around and no matter how hard i looked i never found my white gold wedding ring
09:29dalji you're a man of the cloth so you know how important a wedding ring is absolutely
09:36so what would it mean to you then to get this ring back redemption i feel like i'd be the
09:43redeemed
09:44and for my wife i think she should be made up really i do want to manage your expectations dalji
09:50it
09:50was 2017 there will have been a lot of people you know the opportunity for it to get trampled down
09:55the opportunity for it to have been taken they're high i'm already at peace you know i just hope
10:02this will find peace for my wife it's going to be our silver wedding anniversary next year and to
10:08actually be successful and find the ring that would mean the world for us for next year no pressure
10:16i see what i can do 25 years well congratulations on that and fingers crossed for the ring thank you
10:22for your time dalji lovely to meet you god bless you go well bye if we could get that ring
10:28back
10:28for that anniversary wouldn't that be something
10:35however arranging a search at penrith castle is not straightforward
10:41but we really want to try for dalji's so detectorists shirley and sophie have headed over
10:48to see what we can do as a metal detectorist by trade i would love to have my metal detector
10:54right
10:54now because i feel like it would speed the search up so much but this is a historical scheduled site
10:59and
10:59we can't use our metal detectors here so fingertip search is just where you search with your hands
11:03and eyes and just scan through the grassroots i'm pulling them apart a bit as well and just to make
11:08sure that i don't miss anything the plan is to split the area into a grid
11:20and forensically search each formation line until they meet in the middle
11:27it could have potentially gone underground a little bit with people treading on the grass
11:32over the years we're at heritage place so we don't want to be digging any holes or leaving any
11:37damage in the slightest i think there's a good chance we can find it with our fingers because
11:43i don't think that it will have moved very far there is a chance someone else could have picked
11:46it up but it is a grassed area you know people aren't looking out for that sort of thing with
11:50a place
11:50like this i mean you're at this fantastic castle site you're going to be looking up at the historic
11:54site you're not going to be necessarily looking down that's interesting not something you see every
12:00day it's a telephone box charm i mean you know people are losing things like that here and we're
12:09finding stuff like that in the grass then there's every chance that we'll be able to recover the ring
12:15that makes me very hopeful in fact
12:26back at crummer quarter the freedivers are still searching for andy's wedding ring
12:35but the heavens have opened
12:45the weather it's probably worse out of the water than it is in the water to be honest at this
12:50moment
12:50like i know it's absolutely pouring out here but when i'm in the water i'm wet anyway so hey
12:59they've had no luck in locating the ring so far but there's been plenty of rubbish to bring out
13:06when i found this ancient spoon it actually had the top bit on and it seems like it's disintegrated in
13:12the time that i've had it in my bag but i mean it's quite an ornate little thing to suck
13:17your porridge
13:18from
13:20another cool thing i found this cute little dinosaur guy
13:24it's got a little happy face and finding the sky definitely made my day
13:33the team has now covered half of the search area following the direct line toward the island that andy
13:39swam on the day
13:42it does make me sad thinking that there's a good chance i'm never going to see it again
13:47we can replace it it's just a piece of metal but the sentimental value that it holds can't be replaced
13:53you know you can't replace the original can you i gave that to him it feels like a part of
13:59him's missing
14:00so it'll be very nice to see it again
14:05so the uh the weather conditions they're getting pretty bad now the wind's coming in
14:10rain's coming in it churns up the shallows so moving still around
14:21that gale may even take his kit bag if james doesn't catch it
14:26one thing we know about the lake district is that the weather can turn in the blink of an eye
14:3222 miles over at windermere scubas dameron and duncan are planning a cleanup
14:39and thankfully for the deep diving part of our team the heavens opening barely registers
14:48we'll find a good contour three or four meters yeah work our way out along the peninsula and work our
14:53way back and just see what we can see
14:56so
15:27it goes out very very rocky everything's sat on the surface on the rocks
15:33problems off a new cup so i can have a brew when i get out
15:46the team is finding all sorts of things down there but there does seem to be a theme of the
15:53day
15:54i've also found a plate
15:59and to complement the plate a bowl so i can have a full three-course meal now
16:05there's a knife i just need to find the fork
16:08this is my favorite find a classic old 1980s beer glass brilliant bit of kit that
16:15i can have a little bit of a knife while the scubas continue their cleanup
16:26back at penrith castle detectorists shirley and sophie are completing their forensic fingertip
16:32search for daljeet's wedding ring because of the nature of the site we're not to use any tools so
16:38you know retrieving things out of the ground like this just the little surface vines that are poking out
16:45try and get it out as best i can
16:53shirley found a five pence it just shows though like if we're finding stuff like this then we could
16:59potentially find this ring the biggest thing that i've actually found is a gold roman ring that is the
17:03biggest miracle item that i've found so i mean if i can find something that was lost 2000 years ago
17:07and this was only seven years ago then surely that gives me a little bit of hope
17:14as detectorists we develop a keen eye for you know finding objects spotting things in the soil
17:21i think for a search like this when it's dry makes it a lot easier
17:28i'm being really meticulous with this i don't want to miss this ring i'm just looking for a
17:33little glint because imagine losing such an important and sentimental item
17:47but after searching for hours and working methodically over their grid lines
17:52it's not looking hopeful we've pretty much covered everything now i mean i have ratched around in this
17:58grass i've removed every blade of grass out the way i've looked among it we've sort of met in the
18:03middle now and we haven't had any joy unfortunately
18:08i am devastated for daljeet and four miles away back at the boathouse i need to let him know the
18:16news
18:18hi hello lovely to see you i've been waiting i've only got more and more excited it's great
18:24oh well i wanted to give you a bit of an update as to where we are how keen were
18:31you to get it back
18:32if we kind of put it on rating from one to 100 i'd probably say 101 so quite high hopes
18:39we sent our metal detectorist team to penrith castle
18:44uh oh well because it is a scheduled monument we weren't allowed to use the metal detectors
18:52so our team were doing a fingertip search so that obviously made the search much more difficult
18:58they are so thorough and they were so determined but i'm so sorry daljeet they could not find that ring
19:08oh well i'm truly grateful for the endeavors of yourself and the team to actually make that effort
19:15you know i know we couldn't get back your ring but hopefully this gives you a little bit of closure
19:21or
19:21reassures you that because we know you looked around it was more your wife ruth who was keen to try
19:26and get the ring back wasn't it yes yeah i think it'd be nice for her to okay and say
19:33i'll give her a quick shout
19:37hello ruth hi we know that you guys have got a big anniversary coming up so it's 25 years you
19:43will have been married very soon congratulations oh thank you what we are hoping is that by sharing
19:49your story the amount of people who will have been to that castle who go to that castle you never
19:54know
19:54when we've had it in the past sometimes people go oh i saw that or i picked that up and
19:59handed it in
20:00you never know hopefully somebody might be able to help us get it back to you in time for your
20:04silver
20:04wedding anniversary so sorry we couldn't find it yet that's okay helen no thank you for trying at
20:10least we we've we've not given up hope we're a hopeful bunch we are so yeah take care god bless
20:16bye
20:18i absolutely love those two they are such a joy fingers crossed somebody has picked that ring up and
20:26thought oh i bet this belongs to someone well we know who it belongs to so get it to us
20:30so we can get it
20:39back
20:4026 miles away back over at crummock water the freedivers have been desperately searching all day hoping to
20:48find andy and demi's treasured wedding ring
20:52but despite battling on through wind and rain they've only managed to find things accidentally
20:58lost or rubbish deliberately thrown away
21:04both morale and time left are running low so angus has a plan
21:11we're just going to change sort of what we're doing so is have someone with a torch just looking for
21:17maybe some kind of glint back just to try and cover more area more ground because there's every
21:23likelihood with a recent loss like this it is just sat on the top and then we're going to have
21:28two of us
21:29doing some metal detecting and hopefully that will be what we need to find this ring
21:37but it's not just angus who wants to change focus
21:42renee has her own idea too
21:46when someone tells us where they've gone the reality is is their memory might be slightly off
21:52they might have been distracted at the time so we're gonna go just slightly outside of the path
21:57that he told us because we've been sticking really really heavily to that so it's time to go a little
22:04off-piste and we'll take a little peek on either side and maybe maybe we'll have some luck
22:17it is late in the day to change their tactics but the team is praying just one of them might
22:23work
22:25but the storm clouds are gathering once again it won't be long before they have to call it
22:43when andy and demi lost their ring at crummock they were devastated
22:51today they've come to the boathouse to find out how we got on on their search
22:57i think that ring's long gone now as i think it's been down there too long yeah yeah as a
23:05family
23:05i think we've come to accept that we're not going to see it again
23:11hello hello there andy demi welcome thank you very much so we are looking for a wedding mink yeah
23:19let's be honest andy you haven't had for that long no only three years yeah yeah oops that's three
23:25years longer than i thought he was going to have it oh why does he lose stuff a lot yes
23:29how did
23:30it go down how were you when you realized he lost his wedding ring um i think i was better
23:35than
23:35you expected yeah yeah he thought i was going to be angry but you're all right you're quite civil
23:40about the matter our niece and nephew were there so i had to keep it pg so had the niece
23:48and nephew
23:48not been there might there have been a little bit potentially yeah okay but i guess a wedding ring
23:53is kind of a symbol of what you guys have and like what your bond and your future and all
23:57it's
23:58quite a significant piece of jewelry to lose it is yeah yeah it's got a lot of sentimental value it's
24:03like the one ring that demi gave me like on our wedding day so it means a lot to us
24:09and we really
24:11want it to to see it again yeah i feel like i need to manage your expectations because you know
24:16you're
24:16not the first person to lose a ring in a big body of water yeah when we tell our team
24:21we say we've
24:22lost a ring their hearts sink because you know you've been in the water it's not a little pond is
24:28it no no it's yeah what we find tends to happen with jewelry is it hits the bottom and it
24:34doesn't sit
24:34there it can sink quite quickly and quite rapidly and realistically what do you think the chances
24:41are of us finding it yeah slim to no chance the team did find some bits and bobs in the
24:48water i'm
24:48gonna gonna grab something for you i mean the team we threw at this they're so dedicated you know that
24:56we kind of have to fish them out because they go blue you know they're so desperate to find it
25:00so crummett water beautiful body of water we found a golf ball oh interesting we found another
25:08golf ball people like golfing we found another golf ball i've got to be honest i mean there isn't even
25:16a golf course near crummett who is hitting golf balls this one's actually from hartford golf club
25:22so that's a heck of a drive someone's got do you play golf no no oh it's one of those
25:27things you know
25:27the team every time they got a signal they were like we found something it's another golf ball
25:32and and so it went on you know they just found golf ball after golf ball after golf ball i'm
25:42glad i'm
25:42making you laugh because i was worried you were going to be sad oh my god just golf ball that's
25:50a big
25:50smile that is a big smile yeah i'm assuming this is your name yes it is yeah yeah
26:04it's an incredible news just like 10 meters out there it's about two meters deep and you didn't
26:11even do it with a metal detector oh i found it how relieved are you so relieved it's just nice
26:22to have
26:23it back you know we get the sentimental value back can't wait i'm going to give this back to you
26:28lovely
26:28thank you very much it fits yay like it never left yeah is he forgiven forgiven nice one oh it
26:38feels so
26:39much better how happy are you that he's got it back oh so happy it's the one that i wanted
26:45isn't it
26:46yeah yeah oh the fact that we can't get another one like that yeah yeah that means so much more
26:50yeah
26:51i guess to some people it's just a piece of jewelry what is it to you a symbol of our
26:56love isn't it
26:57our family yeah our family the wedding day everything yeah so yeah yeah great to have it
27:03back congratulations both i'm so thank you very much thank you thank you thank you now you've got
27:08the ring you don't need the golf ball no it was a poor consolation prize and listen i'm so glad
27:14that
27:14you've got your ring back i'm so glad that your smile is back on your face thank you for coming
27:18to
27:19see you thank you very much thank you bye bye i can't believe anything what i got for
27:30when you've had it for so long and then it goes missing now to have it back it just feels
27:34right to
27:35have it back again yeah thrilled to see it back on his finger after all these months without it yeah
27:39yeah
27:40yeah just feels natural having it back just complete shock when it came out the box
27:45so happy to see it again thanks for finding it for us yeah thank you
27:54next time here she comes with a bag of treasure we dive the depths looking for precious memories
28:01it was a literal sinking feeling because i knew it had gone and can we find the family of a
28:07decorated
28:07soldier from world war one this represents incredible service i've got my work cut out now
