00:00Ok then guys, and welcome to another Link's Den.
00:04And this is Shadow of the Beast.
00:07Famed to begin with for appearing on the Amiga.
00:10And featuring absolutely astounding graphics, but pretty shit gameplay.
00:16Now this is actually pretty good.
00:19It's not perfect, it's got it's issues.
00:21Lovely scroll in there.
00:23But compared to the Amiga one, I actually really like this.
00:29So you've still got the standard adventure mechanics, so we can't go down there because the door's locked and we
00:35need to find the key and we don't know where the key is, so we're going to go and have
00:38a look for it.
00:41It's got gorgeous visuals, which is part and parcel of the Shadow of the Beast games.
00:47Ridiculously tough enemies, as you can see here.
00:49I'm just going to twat around with this guy and I just can't work out how to kill him.
00:54You've got very simple attacks, you've basically got a punch.
00:57You can crouch and punch, or you can jump and do a flying kick, although you don't always pull off
01:04a flying kick at the right time because the controls are a little scotty.
01:08There you go, there's one there.
01:10But as you can see, really, really good looking visuals.
01:13The energy is depicted on the bottom of the screen.
01:19Get some health here.
01:22And again, one of the problems with Shadow of the Beast is, as you can see, is enemies come at
01:26you incredibly fast, often with no warning, so you really need to have ridiculously fast reactions to get anywhere in
01:33it.
01:34But as you can see, this moves along at a nice, nice, good pace.
01:40It's not like some of the slower Lynx games you can get.
01:43Little puzzle elements here.
01:44Basically, we need to get past there, so we put the little ball down and that will basically clear it
01:49and we can carry on our way.
01:54Parallax scroll in the background.
01:56Beautiful.
02:00But yeah, this is a really, really polished little conversion.
02:03Now, I've not played the PC Engine outing, so I've got no idea if this is more similar to that
02:09as opposed to the Amiga one.
02:11So if anybody would like to clear that up for me, or better still point me in the direction of
02:17the video, because I'm far too lazy to look myself.
02:20But it does, it does feel a lot more console-y.
02:24I don't think it was, well, it certainly wasn't done by the price of me, the original game.
02:28We've died there.
02:31Which is a good thing in my opinion, because Shadow of the Beast was one of those games that, if
02:35we're completely honest,
02:37everybody who bought it, they bought it because it was an absolutely stunning looking game.
02:44Not because it basically, it played like shit at the end of the day.
02:54But yeah, this Lynx one, it's fairly expensive.
02:57I think it typically goes boxed for around a tenner.
03:01Although you can get it much cheaper than that if you pick up just a cartridge, which I've got.
03:07And like I said, if you're looking for something a bit different on the Lynx, which is basically full of
03:11mainly archaic conversions,
03:13you can't really go wrong with this.
03:15It's good fun.
03:19Bloody hard, though.
03:21Not quite as insanely hard as the Amiibo offering.
03:26But it's still no picnic.
03:28We're going to get a little further here now, but not much further.
03:35Great animation.
03:36Really, really nice looking game.
03:40Perhaps it's caveman, I would have seen.
03:53Yeah, actually, we're coming up to a really stupidly crooked bit in a minute.
03:57With all these little spiders, which annoyingly, you can't actually kill when they're on the floor.
04:02You'll see what I mean in a minute.
04:04Here they come.
04:09So, look at that.
04:10Basically, even if you crouch, they still run underneath you.
04:15So, great game design, though.
04:21Got some more hearts.
04:24There goes my health.
04:26As you can see, I've cropped off the bottom of the screen, so apologies for that.
04:30That should actually say life on the left-hand side.
04:34But that's it.
04:35So, you know, if you can pick it up cheap, and if you like the original for whatever reason,
04:41then you will like this.
04:42It's certainly different, and I recommend you check it out.
04:46So, wait a minute.
