00:00. . .
00:00. . .
00:01. . .
00:13. .
00:14and welcome to Topic, on the Atari game.
00:18Now, this is the port of a Tag Corporation game.
00:21Now, Tag Corporation didn't actually make many games, in fact,
00:24they only made three games in the arcade.
00:26One was Cabal, which was a really cool little shoot-em-up.
00:31The other was Slough Brothers, which was basically Cabal,
00:34but were cowboys in it.
00:36And finally, they made Topic.
00:39The lonely story of a man who loved a woman,
00:42who's turned into an ape, who goes after the woman,
00:45just lumbering.
00:47It's a surprisingly good game as well.
00:50Yes, it was relatively hard,
00:53but there wasn't a lot like it around at the time.
00:56It would have loads of little quirky stuff in it,
00:58like the way he'd walk around with an American football helmet,
01:02as we're showing now.
01:03It's got some great bosses, really weird bosses.
01:06In fact, the first boss was incredibly rated,
01:09and I'm not actually going to get to it,
01:10because people did that hit a really hard game.
01:14And best of all,
01:15it had a really stunning length conversion.
01:18Now, Topic did a bribe on a variety of different systems.
01:23It's got a Mega Drive port, I'm pretty sure.
01:26It also got a very good port on the Amiga.
01:29But to me,
01:31and especially when you look at what the beast is doing,
01:34this is really, really special.
01:37It's a little slow.
01:39The sound's obviously,
01:41well, the sound, to be fair,
01:42is a lot better than this,
01:43because basically,
01:44hand-beat isn't the greatest of emulators, unfortunately.
01:47But it's a really, really poor setback.
01:50And this was actually by the same guy
01:52who worked on Road Blasters,
01:54which was another stunning Atari Lynx from their client board.
01:59So, as you can see,
02:01it's pretty, pretty standard stuff.
02:04But it's all done really well,
02:05and one of the reasons why Topic impressed on the Lynx
02:08is not because it looks absolutely amazing on the small screen.
02:12But there wasn't really a great many platformers to choose from.
02:16Granted, there was a crap-like scrapyard dog,
02:21but, you know,
02:22you really didn't get any decent platformers,
02:24and you certainly didn't get any decent arcade platformers.
02:27So, Topic was a game to be celebrated.
02:31Now, it's a pretty tough game,
02:34as you can see here,
02:35because I've already lost,
02:37already lost life already.
02:41But it's really good,
02:42and there's something about it that
02:43keeps on making you want to come back for one more game.
02:47So, we'll have a run for it again,
02:49and see if we can make any better progress.
02:52Now, apologies for the sound reform of it.
02:56I have basically bought out of a decent camera
02:59on a capture device,
03:01so hopefully you're going to get much better quality
03:04in this video,
03:06as I'm not going to be relying on
03:08sticking the camera out the screen
03:10and how I've done with previous videos.
03:14I'm still trying to sort out the camera,
03:17as you can see.
03:18Sorry, the mic.
03:20So, we'll see how it goes.
03:22But hopefully this will be up to scratch.
03:27But, yeah.
03:29It's just a really good game.
03:30I mean, really, you can...
03:33When you look at the actual Atari links,
03:34in terms of what I have,
03:35because obviously, it was so...
03:40It couldn't rely on third-party support,
03:42because it's really in there, haven't you?
03:45So, Atari did a lot of their own conversions.
03:48And the Embers are, of course.
03:51That is some really, really good stuff,
03:53I think.
03:54A lot of people slate it,
03:56and I suppose at the end of the day,
03:58it didn't have the big killer coin-offs,
04:00like, obviously, Sega were able to deliver.
04:04However, I'll go so far as to say that,
04:07when you actually look at the quality of the Sega stuff,
04:11which was available in the game game,
04:12you had, like, Outrung, you had Afterburner,
04:16you had a lot of big games,
04:18and none of them,
04:19none of them were on par with the links in front of them.
04:22and it just makes you wonder
04:25what the links that have done
04:27for the game game while I'm around here,
04:28have a lot of some really good stuff.
04:31We've got a feature on the way,
04:32which is going to ask some of those very questions,
04:35because we've actually managed to get hold of
04:37both the creation of Hockey,
04:40Card Driveman,
04:42Steel Talens,
04:43Ms. Pac-Man,
04:45Checkered Flag,
04:46a whole host of different links games,
04:49so we're going to delve into the actual development
04:52of those titles.
04:54But, you know,
04:55if you've got a spare 10 quid,
04:57I thoroughly recommend picking up something,
04:59you're not going to be disappointed by it.
05:00I am admittedly making it look ridiculously hard here,
05:04and it is tough,
05:05but, you know,
05:06I'm playing this on the keyboard at the moment,
05:08so people can't be bothered to pull out my USB toy pad,
05:12and this is just a test run,
05:14so hopefully,
05:15this is going some way to address some of the feedback,
05:19which I've had from recently,
05:22which I've been,
05:23viewers, sorry,
05:24which have been very kind to give me a few points on that,
05:27and the main consensus seems to be,
05:30you know,
05:30get some decent video capture,
05:33and go from there,
05:34so I've done that,
05:35and that's how I go.
05:37So this is Toppy,
05:38it's on the Atari links,
05:39it's a pretty good conversion,
05:41and this is Darren Jones for Retro Camer.
05:43Bye, guys.
05:44Bye.
05:46Bye.
05:47Bye.
05:51Bye.
05:54Bye.
05:55Bye.
05:56Bye.
05:57Bye.
05:57Bye.
05:57Bye.
05:57Bye.
