00:07This is Castlevania Legends.
00:09Now this one is interesting because it's somewhat of a departure from the first two Castlevania games.
00:17As you can see there's a little bit of color because this is a Super Game Boy game.
00:22It had a special color palette made for the Super Game Boy.
00:25It's not a Game Boy color game, that's why you'll only see like four colors.
00:30All right, let's do this thing.
00:33I guess standard mode.
00:34Now this is an interesting game because you play as Sonya Belmont.
00:39This is the tale of a young girl struggling to whatever, come on, let's see.
00:42Now Sonya Belmont was supposed to be Trevor's grandmother and supposed to be the first Belmont to fight Dracula.
00:48Now we know now that that's actually not true.
00:50The first Belmont to fight Dracula was Leon Belmont.
00:55And as such, Sonya has been completely eliminated from continuity.
01:01So this game technically never happened.
01:03But it is a Castlevania game and it is, you know, worth taking a look at.
01:10Now the controls are a lot better than they were in the first two games.
01:15You could even change direction in the middle of your jump.
01:18So really this is an improvement even on the already excellent Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge.
01:24In terms of controls.
01:29But as you might notice, it's somewhat a step backwards in terms of graphics.
01:34And she does have a whip like Christopher, that the third version of it is a whip that spits fireballs.
01:40And notice the weird harmonic version of Bloody Tears that's playing.

01:53Fucking ghosts that look like lizards.
01:56Yeah, the graphics are really, I mean, it's a good game.
01:59Make no mistake about that.
02:00But the graphics are, oh, hello, nowhere near as detailed as Belmont's Revenge.
02:05I mean, Belmont's Revenge looked amazing for a Game Boy game.
02:12And this doesn't look, it doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look amazing for a Game Boy game.
02:17So I kind of worry, I kind of wonder about that, like what was going on.
02:21Some people also cited her slow walking speed.
02:24I mean, we're used to that from Christopher Belmont.
02:27But you figure, I mean, this came out in the same year as Symphony of the Night.
02:32You figure they would have improved it a little bit, I don't know.
02:35So this is supposed to be the origin of the Castlevania series, but...
02:41Got wiped from continuity.
02:47And it shares that weirdness with the other Game Boy Castlevanias, that it doesn't have stairs.
02:53There's a one up there.
02:54That there's instead ropes to climb.
02:57And even the ropes, they seem less detailed than this one.

04:28It's also refreshing to play as a female character, I think, and as she was wiped from continuity,
04:33that means the only female characters that you've played as in official Castlevania games,
04:42because this is now considered unofficial, have been Saifa Belnades, who's not a major character.
04:47She was a secondary character.
04:49Maria Renard, who is also a secondary character.
04:53Carrie Fernandez, another secondary character.
04:56So it wasn't until Shinoah, in Order of Ecclesia, that we got, like, a major character.
05:03Alright, a little kind of a, not exactly a boss, but a screen to fight a bunch of enemies on.
05:15There's really no good place to stand.
