00:34Holy monkey bladders! It's Monkey Island!
00:36Back in the day, when adventure games were really in their prime,
00:39they were mostly fantasy games or RPGs,
00:42and Monkey Island took a different approach.
00:44I just wanted to create something the market's going to like,
00:46and it's going to sell a lot of copies,
00:48but I did not want to do fantasy,
00:49and that's when I kind of hit on pirates.
00:51X marks this spot!
00:54Monkey Island is about a guy named Guybrush,
00:56and he travels deep in the Caribbean
00:58to this place called Melee Island.
01:00We don't know where he came from,
01:01we don't know how he got there,
01:02he just kind of appears.
01:04Hi! My name's Guybrush Threepwood,
01:07and I want to be a pirate.
01:08That tells you everything you need to know about that character.
01:11What did you say your name was again?
01:13Guybrush knows here.
01:15Throomwade.
01:16Thriftwade.
01:17Spice cake.
01:18Call me Squinky.
01:21There's the three trials that he has to undergo.
01:24Sword play, thievery, and a treasure hunterie.
01:29There's a little love story going on.
01:31Let's go to your place.
01:33Finish your trials first.
01:34I don't want you to be preoccupied.
01:37I feel this sudden urge to complete the trials.
01:41The Secret Monkey Island.
01:42It was probably the first game that I played
01:45that made me laugh out loud.
01:46Say hello, Roger.
01:49Hello, Roger.
01:51That alone made it a completely unique experience
01:53from anything else.
01:55Whoops.
01:56The reason why Adventure Games flourished for so many years
02:00is largely due to Monkey Island.
02:02Right. I'm off.
02:03Good luck.
02:04Be sure to wear your mittens,
02:05and don't forget to write.
02:09The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition
02:12is a faithfully reimagined version
02:14of the classic 1990 PC game.
02:16You just don't know when to quit, do you?
02:18The biggest challenge in recreating the game
02:20was convincing people it was a good idea.
02:22It's nearly 20 years old.
02:24It was 256 colors.
02:25When we were doing things,
02:26Monkey Island, I think, at its height,
02:28was like five people working on the thing.
02:30We didn't have storyboards that had to be built,
02:32and a whole CGI machine had to get geared up.
02:35It was a lot easier to come up with something funny
02:38and then just run back to our desks
02:40and program it in.
02:41It works!
02:42Oh, I'm so relieved!
02:46We took a look at all of the art,
02:48all of the characters,
02:49and we said,
02:50how do we bring this back to a new audience?
02:53Okay, maggot, whip that sword out
02:55and let's see what you can do with it.
02:56Our first start was to take this 8-bit medium
02:59and faithfully re-envision the sets
03:02and live up to what the fans would expect.
03:05It's all becoming clear.
03:06I really wanted that classical animation feel,
03:10so we went in there and hand-painted over 100 layouts.
03:14Over a 10- or 11-year span,
03:15the character really evolved.
03:17I really wanted to develop the character of Guybrush.
03:20We did quite a few development sketches of him
03:22in different ways,
03:23one of them being with a captain's jacket.
03:25We even did some sketches of him with a beard.
03:28Said, hey, what would Guybrush look like as an old man?
03:30Hey, it's your loss, baby.
03:33Yeah, right.
03:35We went back and looked at the audio
03:37and the special effects and the music.
03:39I can see we've got a lot of work to do here.
03:41I was taking these old bleeps and bloops,
03:46and I had to re-record everything
03:47for a current generation,
03:49as well as be faithful to fans of the game
03:51from 20 years ago.
03:54One of the big things was to make sure
03:56that there were as many live players as possible.
04:00Wow, this is sounding better and better all the time.
04:03This is Dominic Armato as Guybrush Threepwood,
04:05take 452.
04:08We've gone back and for the first time
04:10added brand new recorded dialogue
04:12with the original cast from The Curse of Monkey Island.
04:15We immediately knew that we wanted Dominic Armato back
04:17as Guybrush.
04:18Hi, my name's Guybrush Threepwood,
04:20and I want to be a pirate.
04:21Dominic can best be described
04:22as the ultimate Monkey Island fanboy.
04:25You keep hoping after a while,
04:27you hope, oh, the next one's going to come.
04:28I can't wait to do the next one.
04:29And after about six or seven years,
04:31it's like, okay, I'm just,
04:33I've given up all hope.
04:34It's never coming back.
04:35And then get the email one day,
04:37it's like, hey, give me a call.
04:38Something's going on.
04:39It's like, yes, it's coming back.
04:41Worf.
04:42Aroof.
04:43Lechuk.
04:44Great, we got it.
04:45He knows every little detail
04:47and pretty much knew all the dialogue
04:48just because he loves it so much.
04:50You see what I'm saying?
04:51It's because he knows the game so well.
04:53He just knows what's going on
04:54and he just nails it.
04:55Is that a banana in your pocket
04:56or are you just glad to see us?
05:01The game started with a point-and-click interface
05:03with the mouse
05:03and making it something that people could play
05:05on a controller was the biggest challenge.
05:08The interface filled almost half of the screen,
05:10so we removed that and put it in the background
05:12so it would work well on any platform.
05:13We just couldn't say no to anything.
05:15Like, if it's cool and the game deserves it,
05:17we just like, it's got to go in.
05:18I'm going to put you up against the machine.
05:22Yikes.
05:22Back in the day,
05:23we'd play the game until we got stuck
05:24and obviously there was no internet to help us along.
05:27Gee, I don't know how much longer I can hold my breath.
05:29We didn't want people to have to break the experience,
05:31so we created a hand system
05:32integrated directly into the game.
05:34Well, that wasn't so hard.
05:37The most significant feature
05:39is the ability to press a button.
05:41No, not the red button!
05:43And switch seamlessly from the new version
05:45to the original version.
05:47I have love for the bricky pixels.
05:48You can jump back and forth and it's pretty cool.
05:50We built our game on top of the original code.
05:53Don't touch anything!
05:54It is identical to the classic version of the game
05:57that we released.
05:58I never get tired of this view,
06:00even if I have been looking at it for 20 years now.
06:04The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition
06:06is a gateway to so much of the history of gaming.
06:09This is the game that made me want to be a game designer.
06:12When I joined Luca,
06:13it was always in the back of my mind
06:14that this is the company that made the game
06:16that I loved since my childhood.
06:17It's a fresh new face on this fantastic classic
06:19and I'm jazzed, man.
06:20and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
06:21I was like totally blown away
06:23by how completely pure it has remained
06:25to the original game.
06:26You're supposed to open that little door
06:28if you've got the guts.
06:31I think this will give a lot of people
06:32a great opportunity to experience that.
06:38I don't believe it.
06:40You face the beast I've feared all these years.
06:44You are a brave man after all.
06:47I found the treasure of Melee Island
06:49and all I got was this stupid T-shirt.
06:55Oh, Guybrush.
06:56Oh, Guybrush.
