00:03Hello, this is Richard, Lord British Garriott, here to introduce Shroud of the Avatar Forsaken Virtues.
00:09This is the 90 Days In demo, or prototype, we made for the Rooster Teeth Expo.
00:16As I noted there, we're only three months after the end of our Kickstarter,
00:20where we've taken the early prototype that we built with off-the-shelf tools and art, etc.,
00:25and I'm now building the real games.
00:27We're three months into an 18-month schedule, but we would like to show the community and everyone
00:34the game in progress as we're building it, but please keep in mind the early state of our evolution
00:42and judge features appropriately, shall we say.
00:46But let's begin.
00:49When we start in Shroud of the Avatar, we're going to start outdoors, in the outdoor map, the overland map,
00:56and we're going to go off exploring for adventure and resources, resources for crafting.
01:02As everyone who is familiar with our previous work in Ultima, you know how important to us the professions beyond
01:09adventuring are.
01:10So in this case, we're going to go off here into these woods, we're going to zoom down into a
01:15close-up view of those zooms.
01:17About a kilometer, each of these zones is approximately a kilometer on a side.
01:21And now you can see we're running through the forest looking for some resources.
01:25In this case, I'm in search of some resources to build some furniture for my home.
01:31Along the way, I've run into this spider who's going to try to stop our path.
01:35And you'll notice that the combat right now is in a very simple state.
01:41But the combat will become more sophisticated, of course, over time.
01:45It's just a simple stand toe-to-toe and fight at the moment.
01:48But you may also have noticed that the amount of user interface on screen now or even during combat is
01:54quite minimal.
01:54And that's one of our goals as a project is to keep the viewport into the virtual world as clean
02:01and uncluttered as possible.
02:04In this case, we've found a suitable-looking tree here that we might be able to harvest for some good
02:09hardwoods.
02:10Sure enough, we get a few logs out of it.
02:13And we'll keep chopping on it and see how much we might be able to extract.
02:18We've got another good log from it.
02:22Here we are on our third time.
02:24And like you there, that seems to have taken the tree down.
02:27That's our indication that that's about as much resources as a particular tree is going to give up on this
02:34path.
02:34So now we'll go back to the outdoor map and head back into town to see what we might be
02:44able to make with the resources we've just acquired.
02:48Stepped over to the village, zoomed down into the village.
02:52Here we are above a little town called Owl's Head.
02:57If we look around, you may have heard a little buzzing sound.
02:59What was that?
03:00Ah, I see.
03:00It's a little Tesla tower that is here in this town offering a bit of protection.
03:06So this is actually one of the relatively safe towns compared to some that are further afield.
03:12As we go through here, you'll notice the other NPCs are milling about and barking and preparing for conversation.
03:19But here in front of our own house, you'll see a couple of crafting stations.
03:22This first station is a sawmill.
03:26And the sawmill, as you can see, can be used for a variety of purposes.
03:30If you put a log on the top of that sawmill, it broke it down into boards and dowels,
03:38which might be useful for making things like tables and chairs.
03:41You'll see that also if you put a board on it and use it, it breaks that board down into
03:47dowels.
03:48And depending on what resources you might need to build things out of, you would set up that crafting table
03:54differently.
03:55Right next to it, you can see we have the carpenter's table.
04:00And on the carpenter's table, it happens to be well known that to make a chair,
04:07you could use a couple of boards and a handful of dowels, two boards in particular and four dowels in
04:14particular.
04:15And if you use that crafting table, you can see we now have made a chair.
04:20Now let's go into our house and see if we might find a place we would like to set the
04:25chair.
04:26Here in the living room, you'll notice that fire pit we just walked past.
04:29That was actually one of the pieces of art made for us by the community, in particular Harry Man,
04:34a guy that goes by Harry Man.
04:36He submitted a lot of art that we are very happy with and are bringing into the game now.
04:42We're here on the second floor.
04:44There was, at least considering where we might have put the chair,
04:47the chair was green in areas it was legal to place and red in areas it was not legal to
04:51place.
04:52Now we're up here on the roof, we might get a little good view of town
04:55and see what some of the other buildings are beginning to look like.
04:58See the smoke rising out of the chimneys of my neighbors.
05:02And in this case, let's set down the chair and see if this,
05:07how we like sitting up here on the roof in our freshly made chair.
05:12For those of you who are familiar with Ultima history,
05:16you know that in earlier Ultimas, I used to work very hard
05:19to make people able to sit in chairs.
05:23Because when creating a highly detailed interactive virtual world,
05:27it was always a big deal to me is that all the props you would see were useful
05:31in the way that you would expect them to be useful.
05:34And while in modern times, it's not necessarily that difficult to allow people to sit in chairs,
05:39it was a hard-fought process back in those early days.
05:42So, now that we've done a little bit of adventuring and we've been building some chairs,
05:47let's head over to Fire Lotus's Tavern and find ourselves a little bit to drink.
05:52And here you can see the bartender is welcoming us as the first patron of his day.
05:56And as you can see, we're typing to the bartender not via a menu system,
06:00but literally by typing English language phrases.
06:06In this case, I've introduced myself by name,
06:08and so he's going to now remember me by name.
06:11He told me what was on tap, I said I'll have a beer,
06:13he says I'm going to bring down a new keg right now.
06:19So, in fact, at this point, I'm going to tell the bartender a little bit about what I've been doing.
06:23He said, hey, I've been making some chairs and got thirsty.
06:25And the bartender responds by saying, hey, you know,
06:27we could always use some comfortable chairs,
06:29but not like that throne of bone that I've heard about.
06:32And so I can ask him, you know, what the heck is that?
06:36And he says, well, you know, I tend to hear things in this bar,
06:39and there's a dungeon nearby.
06:41With a recent tremor awoke some dark forces that were living within,
06:46and some of the villagers had gone there to explore it.
06:52At that point, I can ask, you know,
06:54well, what did those villagers find when they explored it?
06:57And he says, look, you know,
06:58those that survived have spoken of skeletons walking about an undead rising,
07:06as well as a dark force that has risen,
07:10that commands them,
07:11that often is seated on a throne of bone.
07:16And I can, of course, say, you know,
07:18thank you very much for telling me that story.
07:21And the bartender says, look, you know,
07:23hey, if you do something regarding that dungeon,
07:25I'm sure there's going to be a lot of people in this town who will be very thankful.
07:28But you'll notice the one thing that didn't happen here
07:30is that you were never told that something was explicitly a quest.
07:34There is no quest log.
07:36It is really up to you as a player
07:38to see what is happening in the game
07:40and make decisions about what you believe is important
07:44and what you believe you should do.
07:47So in this case, we're going to head out of town
07:49and head over to that nearby dungeon he was referring to.
07:52Here it is right next door.
07:54And now we're going to step into the underworld
07:57and see what we find.
08:00Inside here, you can see we've entered into the dungeons,
08:04into a crypt-like setting.
08:07And we can begin to look here not only for the throne of bone,
08:10but for these walking undead as well as maybe some treasure
08:15we might find in some of these crypts.
08:17You'll notice I can kick the skulls around on the ground.
08:20They're just some of our simple early physics objects.
08:23And I can often loot the skeletons or crypts that I find along the way
08:28for supplies that I might be able to take back to town and sell
08:31or fix up for my own use.
08:39As I explore a little farther,
08:41you can see I'm still finding some treasure here and there.
08:45Aha!
08:46But I see in some of these side crypts,
08:47the walls are in, burst out,
08:49and some of those skeletons are being in delay chase.
08:51But today, instead of stopping to fight them,
08:54I will try to see if we can make it through
08:56to the deeper recesses of this pit
08:59and try to find the malevolent force that is driving this evil
09:04and perhaps recover that throne of bone
09:07to be put in my own home.
09:11As I proceed down, in addition to the undead,
09:14you'll see there's plenty of spiders and spiderwebs
09:16and bodies laying about.
09:20But in addition to monsters to fight,
09:23there are often puzzles to figure out as well.
09:26and here in this room, across the room,
09:30was a gate that won't be open
09:31and I can't actually finish
09:32until I solve a bit of a puzzle here.
09:34But along the way,
09:35I continue to find a little bit of loot.
09:38And this puzzle is a puzzle about torches
09:40where you have to turn all the blue torches to red.
09:44Each torch changes itself as well as its neighbors.
09:48In this case, I knew the solution,
09:50so I could try to run through here
09:52to get you as far in this experience as possible.
09:56Another kind of puzzle here,
09:58the spike traps.
09:59I have to wait until the spikes go down
10:02before I can run across.
10:03There's a doorway here that was filled in
10:06that I can bust down
10:07and that lets me into the final chamber here
10:11where up on the top of that dais
10:13is the Grand Lich
10:14who is in fact in charge of this deadly place.
10:19I can run up here
10:20and have a little combat with him.
10:22Again, this is still very early combat.
10:25Later on, he'll have, of course,
10:26much more sound effects,
10:27the ability to cast magic,
10:29be a much more interesting combat.
10:32but here you can begin to see
10:35as the beginning of the way this would take place.
10:43And there, we have finally dispatched him.
10:46The poor guy, he's down for the count.
10:48And here, indeed, is the Throne of Bone,
10:50the item which I have sought,
10:53which I can now sit and take over his domain
10:55or return to my home.
